  • Have you just got a Baofeng UV-5R? Do you want to know what you should listen to?
This video tries to show you the best frequencies to listen to on your new radio, and how to program the radio (save the frequencies for a later date).
    I hope this helps,

At 19:10 you say if you get someething on the 145.500 frequency it will automatically switch over - do you need TDR (menu 07) on for this to happen? Just got my Baofeng & have followed your set up in this video but wasn't sure about TDR. Thanks. Really enjoying your channel btw.

You are quite right... so I have pinned this helpful comment. For the automatic change from A to B, TDR in menu 7 needs to be 'on'. Thanks!

    Newly subcribed...
I have 4 of these uv5r he's generally used on low power when camping out in my local area.
I'm on the coast on Anglesey, yes these radios will operate on the marine vhf and most of civilian airbands. .. not advised
Interesting point for listeners however.. 156.000 is known as "channel zero" and it's the coastguard and search and rescue frequency

I don't know if Ben is a vicar, but he's got the most vicar-like face I've ever seen. I was really surprised by how far my Baofeng would pick up signals from. I'm on the river, north of Liverpool. I'd regularly pick up signals from deep into Liverpool, as far north as Southport and right across the Mersey into the Wirral. I think I was picking up transmissions from repeaters that were on high masts, hills, etc and the river gave me a nice lack of obstructions. But I estimate I was getting signals from 15 miles North, 10 miles South and somewhere between the two across the river.
I found it much more interesting than listening on my SDR, where the lack of a decent antenna meant it was rare I'd pick up anything aside from what I could hear on my wife's DAB.

Great to find some U.K based information. I recently bought my UV-5R from Baofeng U.K they are local company based in Portsmouth. There is a lot of fake rubbish & claims on E-bay Amazon, in relation to Baofeng Radios. Several sites specify 400Watt output etc, and the prices are quite expensive. Baofeng U.K will check out each radio, for any faults before dispatch & delivery times are within a week. I was a little dubious initially, but have since been very impressed with their service, and have ordered another. UV-10R & UV-5RIII Good to get some info here regarding repeater operations in my area. Keep up the good work.

No luck.... i then managed to finally put the repeater in correctly and instantly got a few people connecting, one was a ham radio club who operate at regular intervals so I am looking forward to listening in. First time I heard someone over HAM radio! Thanks so much for this great video! my mistake was I only set the transmit frequency not the receive.

Ben, you're a typical Nerd ..... Crooked Glasses, one side high, one side low ... I'm surprised you don't have tape holding them together. , However I'm a far older Nerd than you are, I started in HAM back in the early 60's growing up on a Midwestern US Farm, (mostly) ALL Farmers were HAM operators and my first radio of my own was a Heathkit tube model I have to completely assemble, including soldering on ALL the components onto a pretty crude circuit board and fight to get into the metal box. But I didn't wear glasses, so I wasn't an obvious "Nerd".

Also what would happen if I tryed to talk to a 140 mhz Chanel without a license, and one last question is that what channel(?) or frequency do I go to if I want to talk to that friend and the only way to communicate is in a 140 mhz channel(?)

Yes, you can use these for satellite comms for amateur radio satellites. The ISS has an amateur radio repeater on board. You won't get worldwide, but you can get across the current radio horizon of the satellite which can be hundreds of miles, but only for a few minutes as it passes over.

Great video Ben. Just got my 2 UV5R's out and starting to program them up again as it's been a while since I've used them.

Real Clear and concise explanations of ham radio and repeater use, This will be extremely useful for brand new hams,
Your explanations are spot on even though some of your frequencies are a little different than ours here in the USA
Thanks and a Merry Christmas to you!!

It would be better to focus on what frequencies to listen to for specific things. Is there a disaster or severe storm, hurricane, or tornado? Is the city on fire? Nuclear attack? Pile-up on the freeway? I think you get the idea.
If you just want to see who is listening, there is a frequency for "CQ" calls. Otherwise, there are thousands or Millions of frequencies, just like for shortwave. (shortwave is from 2500KHz to 22MHz)
You might as well ask what is a good channel on satellite radio or Netflix.
