Dr. Greger may have helped save my life. His book ‘How not to die’ was recommended to me by my doctor after it was discovered I had some blockage in 3 arteries. I completely changed my diet & life after barely reading a chapter. And his book ultimately led me to your channel which continues to inspire and educate me. Thank you 🙏🏻
Congratulations on making the changes . It's one thing to know what to do and another thing to change your lifestyle. You were lucky to have a doctor familiar with Dr Gregor's book.
I would venture to say that Dr. Gregor is more than a doctor, more than a self-proclaimed "nutritionist nerd" more than a WFPB advocate is a humanitarian of the highest order. Thank-you!
Totally. We got to meet him on the Holistic Holiday at Sea cruise in March. Took a pic with him first night then a few days later I invited him to join us at the breakfast table (assuming he was probably meeting someone) but no harm in asking right?! He said yes I am but tell you what, if I don't find them I'll come back and join you. And he did!! It was a great time chatting about travel and such. Didn't ask him anything health related as I'm sure he gets that ALL.THE.TIME! One of the highlights of my trip!

What a crazy crossover episode treat this one is :D Thanks to the both of you, Derek and Michael! You are awesome human beings and I am honoured to get to experience the work you do for all us animals! 🌱🐾
Finally you found the right man to give you the correct facts. Dr. Greger is the best no doubt, been following his advice for more than ten years and got my life back.
Unfortunately, this was a big fail. How could someone who is into resistance training not ask one question about it? Dr. Gregor is definitely into exercise with the amount of walking he does, just not for building muscle. I fear for his health. It's interesting that bodybuilders rarely die from cancer although they eat large amounts of protein and do steroids. Isn't high protein intake supposed to spike mTOR and increase cancer risk? It's unfortunate that nobody will ask Dr. Gregor these types of questions.
@@jakubchrobry3701 Yes, but when you exercise you deplete your amino acid count and that turns off mTOR again. IGF1 is also raised, i'm not sure if this is also dropped by much exercise.
Glad to see this collab finally materialized! I would love to see you interview Dr. Zach Busch, Dr. Milton Mills, Dr. Klapper, Dr. Joel Furhman, Dr. Neil Barnard, and Dr. Pam Popper
Listened to the audio book version of How Not to Die and liked it so much that I followed it up with How Not to Diet even though I’m pretty skinny. Oh my gosh, what an incredible wealth of knowledge in these two books!! Switching to eating a mostly whole food plant based diet improved my health dramatically, and I love hearing the honest science behind it. So glad to hear Dr. Greger is releasing another book! I’ll be pre-ordering for sure.
What a powerhouse video! So great to see two of the best people in the plant-based world together. Thank you for putting this together! I hope you can collaborate again in the future.
I watch Dr. Greger probably every day and I've watched your videos over and over again. You guys are tops in my vegan book. YES, please interview him again. Thanks! 🌟 Hey while I'm thinking about, another fave is Rose Lee, Cheap Lazy Vegan, from Calgary!
Thanks for introducing me to Dr. Gregor! Love that he's doing a walking interview. I've been a vegetarian for almost 40 years and wish I had the internet resources to guide me at the start of the journey. I had to become an armchair nutritionist (I read a lot of books) for my own sake. When I gave birth to my second child, I was such an oddity that the hospital nutritionist brought her intern to visit me and ask why I didn't have an iron deficiency. Now that I'm older, I'm encountering new challenges and am grateful for the resources like yourself and Dr. Gregor. I'll definitely read the book and keep watching for great ideas. I bought an airfryer because of one of your videos and LOVE it! Thank you!

This is AMAZING! Congrats for hooking up with Dr. G! As an infant, before I even knew what "meat" was, my family would feed me baby foods with meats in them and I would get violently ill. The family Dr. said "meh, just feed her what doesn't make her sick, she'll grow out of it." At 17, still not eating meats (way back before it was trendy to be veg), my family took me back to the Dr. thinking something was "wrong" with me. Turns out I am missing a digestive enzyme that digests higher forms of protein, like that in animal products. It's sort of like an allergy! Full fat dairy gives me migraines, whole eggs give me digestive issues. So now, at 56, I have been a vegetarian (98% whole food vegan) I still do not consume meat, ever. My family has a long history of heart disease & diabetes. I feel my body rejects certain foods as an indicator of things that may make my genetically predetermined ailments worse. Pardon the pun but Go with your gut. 🙂
This makes sense, also i heard that a specific strain of lyme can now cause people to become allergic to meat, this would no doubt also be the breaking of the enzyme that helps digest higher forms of protein, animal proteins are very large, casein from milk being one of the biggest.
Nice job! i've been a fan of Dr Greger for years, as a family doctor trying literally to keep people alive, his first book How Not To Die remains, by far, the most helpful book I've recommended to my patients for real life changes. It's been a lot more helpful than most of the nutrition consults my patients have had (too bad, actually and surprisingly! I've found a disappointing lack of standards in their advice).

@@joshuakenny503 Yeah, bruh, that's my complaint, it was only about nutrition. Derek, a muscular guy who advocates staying fit, should have asked some questions about fitness as Dr. Greger was walking his treadmill attempting to stay fit. Dr. Greger even has a section about exercise in his book. No brainer, bruh.
@@jakubchrobry3701 I feel like there's a vast amount less ambiguity on exercise at least in the building muscle camp which is most peoples interest I feel the video covered popular misunderstandings/ knowledge gaps in nutrition which are far more plentiful very well

Dr G is my celebrity crush. I ordered his book How Not to Die from my rehab hospital bed after a stroke a little over 2 years ago, refused to take the statins and other crap the M.D.s who had no education in Nutrition wanted to prescribe, and my blood numbers and over-all health have improved steadily since then. WFPB SOS-free and tending my small acreage is my life - literally! Thanks for this video and looking forward to the next book! (btw I wrote a book on ageing differently myself in 2014 and none of what Dr G says contradicts it).
@@80slimshadysmost of the people that have heart attacks are on statins. Read the side effects of statins. They made it so my sister couldn’t walk (until she realized they were hurting her legs). 😮
This was such a great Q&A, the questions answered some of my own questions I’ve been thinking about. The one about people who do everything right but still have high cholesterol and the Portfolio Diet was pertinent. I will research that more. Also, the question about how much soy protein is too much was great because I just bought an instant pot and started making my own greek style soy yogurt which is out of this world and I enjoy eating it most days, so that was an answer I needed to hear. I love Dr Greger and your Simnett nutrition channel! Thanks to everyone!
Derek, just when I thought your channel couldn't get any better... BAM!! 💥 You continue to impress your audience at every turn. Your choice of questions couldn't have been better. 👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
Loved this interview! I particularly like the section on Omega 3s. I am managing my MS symptoms (in part) with a WFPB diet and Omega 3s are really important to my brain health. I have been using flaxseed, hemp, & chia, but also use an algae based supplement.
For those of us who eat like this, we're on the fringe, the cutting edge of how our body's biology wants to ingest. This dietary regimen is new, so there will be lots of recipes and information that are recent, yet quite desirable. Many thanks for doing this Q & A with our main man; Doctor G.
Derek, you are the star and I so enjoy your videos. Also, you're easy on the eyes and your personality is awesome. I have learned so much from you. I'm in California so long distance but same values. Dr. Gregor, I've followed for years. Glad you made this video. He is wonderful and the real deal. Continue on please as you are making changes in people's life.
I make sos-free seitan in the instant pot by just using up veggie leftovers of any type, adding herbs and spices and blending it in the cuisinart for a few minutes with gluten flour. I wrap it in parchment paper, then cheese cloth and steam it (using a veggie steamer in the bottom) for like 40 minutes. Easy and healthy version and way cheaper than the salty and fatty stuff in the stores. So…I think seitan can definitely be a health food!
Love Dr. Gregor.🙂I prefer not to eat grains, but I recently decided to try black rice. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned. It tasted just like white rice, but has a far better nutrient profile. It's expensive, though. Thank you for this interview, Derek.🤗❤️
This video was just great. I would like to see something like this video maybe once a month from some doctor from the vegan community. Your questions were very good as well. Thanks to Dr. Greger and thanks to you Derrick as well. 👍👍
Derek skipped the most important question regarding Dr. Gregor excessive treadmill use and his refusal to consider resistance training in promoting longevity. Am I going to "die young" by wanting to build muscle and consume 1.6 g/kg of protein daily to support my effort? Dr. Gregor seems to think so.
@@jakubchrobry3701 You really don't need to eat that much protein, you already eat more calories because you're working out so you automatically get enough protein. All proteins can be gotten from starches, fruit and vegetables. I do think resistance training is important though a couple times a week.
@@11235Aodh You need to do some research. At least watch the documentary , The Game Changers. They have plenty of references too. They even say at least 1.6 g/kg of protein. Most non-vegans resistance trainers say 2.2 g/kg. I'm not talking about a leisure couple of times per week hitting the machines without breaking a sweat that most fit people do. I'm talking heavy deadlifts, squats, bench, etc to gain strength and muscle. I'm 6' 2". I went from 156 lbs in October to my current 183 lbs with no noticeable addition of fat. I'm 58 and looked like (body only) Mr. Burns on the Simpsons last October (just like Dr. Greger). I don't want to die of sarcopenia. Dr. Greger does not look like he's going to have a healthy future. And it's not his diet. I look younger than him and I'm about 10 years older. I was eating around 2000 cal/day and now often hit 3000 cal. And I unwantedly dropped 2 lbs in the last month. Remember, athletes like Michael Phelps eat about 10,000 cal/day (when he trained). My body is now similar to Phelps.
Excellent interview Derek. I loved the detailed questions you asked Dr. Greger. These questions were awesome and this interview was totally unexpected. Loved it!
I’m a critical care RN, I had a patient that was severely allergic to chlorophyll so he could not eat any plants. At age 50 he had several heart stents and bad coronary artery disease. He could only eat meat, eggs, processed crap foods, soda, some cheap breads/buns (because they’re stripped of any nutrition), no French fry’s, no ice cream, (dairy passes on some chlorophyll from eating grass), no pizza, no juice, etc. He was depressed, unhealthy, though he couldn’t change his diet, it is true allergy to plants. That’s how I know the Keto diet is not healthy, especially long term. I watched this person through the years, saw his health deteriorate.
Such great questions and honest answers. I really got a lot out of this. Thank you to both of you for spending your time doing this. Keep up the good work!
I love Dr Greger 💚 I wish some answers were more in depth though, such as one on calcium carbonate. Maybe giving him questions in advance would help? I know that his goal is to "translate" science so everyone would understand, but I wish he could add a little bit of explanation to the answers. I pre-ordered "How not to age", can't wait!
Hey Derek. I absolutely loved this episode. I love them all, but this was really something special. Thank you for the amazing work you do. Cheering you on! Bonita
Two great minds together, what a good video! You asked perfect questions to cover a lot of info in a short amount of time, while keeping interest. Awesome job!
Hey Derek, I am glad you asked the Calcium carbonate question because just last week I was thinking about your video where you said it maybe a problem in plant milks. And I was thinking, that it shouldn't be, because when you eat your stomach tries to achieve a certain pH and so if you consume carbonate, which increases pH, your stomach will lower it by producing more acid.
So wouldn't that mean that the stomach then has to work that much harder? I mean low stomach acid is a legitimate issue that leads to a lot of health issues. So I'm not so sure that we can just rely on the fact that our stomachs will easily overcompensate, and that there will be no negative consequences for that overcompensation. I'm sure Dr. Greger has a thorough explanation of why to not worry about fortified calcium carbonate, but he didn't explain it at all in this video. He basically just said "trust me" and left it at that. So I'm still unconvinced myself.
calcium carbonate doesn't permanently reduce stomach acid, unlike drugs like proton pump inhibitors (rabeprazole, pantoprazole, etc) which react with enzymes to actually alter stomach acid quantity. calcium carbonate is a weak base that will react with the stomach acid to produce some calcium salts but it's nowhere near enough to cause harm, and it doesn't affect the actual acid levels. of course this doesn't mean you should guzzle calcium carbonate like there is no tomorrow, but normal amounts in fortified foods is not a concern.
@@plantahari Thank you for your reply and insight. Yes, I agree that it is not comparable to the use of proton pump inhibitors. Yet there is still the concern that certain plant milks are fortified with the same active ingredient and dosage as common antacids such as Tums. Perhaps infrequent consumption will not lead to a prolonged decrease in stomach acid levels. But I would never eat an antacid with a meal and expect optimal digestion. So I'm still unsure as to why drinking it in the form of plant milk would not be a concern.
Dr. Greger may have helped save my life. His book ‘How not to die’ was recommended to me by my doctor after it was discovered I had some blockage in 3 arteries. Amazing interview! Thank you derek serving the community, appreciate all you do. Thanks gregor this is definitely inspiring me to dive more into the daily dozen! Great editing just overall professional, casual, friendly, captivating and informative.
Great video! Nice to see these two team up to help the public learn about nutrition and a vegan diet.
Thank you!
Unfortunately, they did not discuss exercise and resistance training, which is Derek's expertise. It was a missed opportunity. I'm very disappointed.
@@jakubchrobry3701 bruh what question do u want to ask? this vid is more about nutrition
@@jakubchrobry3701 I feel like there's a vast amount less ambiguity on exercise at least in the building muscle camp which is most peoples interest I feel the video covered popular misunderstandings/ knowledge gaps in nutrition which are far more plentiful very well
so glad 2 of my favorite vegan sources got together!
Thanks for managing this interview for us. Love your fitness and nutrition content. You got our support, always. Thanks for the quality content king.
Wish you and your wife a long, happy, healthy and successful life.
Love the shirt and love to see your content. Stay safe brother.
Thank you so much!
@@Simnettnutrition Wait a minute!! "Wife"?
I really enjoyed that, thank you both.
This was such a cool video! Awesome to have him on the channel!
Statins are necessary for CVD patients and dont have side effects. They stabilize plaques from rupturing again so you dont have another stroke.
@@80slimshadysmost of the people that have heart attacks are on statins. Read the side effects of statins. They made it so my sister couldn’t walk (until she realized they were hurting her legs). 😮
@@bethmartof1262 yea I retract the statement about side effects
Wonderful interview! Love Dr. Greger 💜💜💜
How have I never found you before?????? I saw Dr. Greger and checked you out. What a serendipitous Greger sighting!
I'm such A HUGE FAN of Dr. Greger!!! ❤❤❤🎉
I'm so excited to see collaboration! His books are FANTASTIC! Highly recommend for anyone.
I am glad you took something away from this convo! thanks for watching :)
Omega 3 (and 6) are in all plant foods in the right ratios aswell. People tend to forget this.
For those of us who eat like this, we're on the fringe, the cutting edge of how our body's biology wants to ingest. This dietary regimen is new, so there will be lots of recipes and information that are recent, yet quite desirable. Many thanks for doing this Q & A with our main man; Doctor G.
Super cool video!! I learned more about soy and rice which I eat everyday, thanks!
Great to have his view of so many of these topics 🥦❤
Thanks for having Dr. Greger on your channel! Great questions! Really enjoyed this one!👍
I’m currently reading hot not to die (again). Thanks to you and Dr. Greger!
So happy for your success in life! Hope you live a super long and happy life.
Great Q&A, very informative. Thx.
i want to highly recommend Dr OBALAR for curing me of genital warts with his natural herbs.❤
White rice cooked and cooled turns into prebiotic fiber and can benefit gut health so I went back to that instead of brown.
Thank you so much for finally asking him about seitan I've been trying that question for 4 months now.
No worries! I'm happy you enjoyed the interview :)
This video was just great. I would like to see something like this video maybe once a month from some doctor from the vegan community. Your questions were very good as well. Thanks to Dr. Greger and thanks to you Derrick as well. 👍👍
Thanks for the idea, I'll see what I can do!
Dr. Greger is my spirit animal
Wow that’s wild. And sad
I think mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll
You mean you just watched? If he was eating grass fed was elergic?
Tragic.
how tho? Was it just that he lacked the gut bacteria to break it down, or what was the actual allergy?
LOVE Dr. Greger. Such a wealth of information. Thanks for having him on. Very much enjoyed that.
Wow Derek really great questions. Good job! What a cool interview you got an opportunity to do. That's exciting!
This man is a freaking treasure!!!!
Such great questions and honest answers. I really got a lot out of this. Thank you to both of you for spending your time doing this. Keep up the good work!
We all owe Michael Greger so much.
So so true. 🙏
For bad health?
I love Dr Greger 💚 I wish some answers were more in depth though, such as one on calcium carbonate. Maybe giving him questions in advance would help? I know that his goal is to "translate" science so everyone would understand, but I wish he could add a little bit of explanation to the answers.
I pre-ordered "How not to age", can't wait!
Hey Derek. I absolutely loved this episode. I love them all, but this was really something special. Thank you for the amazing work you do. Cheering you on! Bonita
Derek, I also do my B-12 in half doses. Thanks for this fantastic collaboration. Great questions that you and the community knew to ask.
Great interview, Derek....I learned a lot!
Did he say 25 grams of soy protein a day? Did I hear that right? That’s less than 1 ounce per day, which is barely a serving.
About 150 g of tofu will give you 25 g of soy protein… just over 1 cup of tofu.
Dr. Greger is simply the best!
You asked great questions- many were ones I’ve question myself, and always been curious about!
Derek, you did a great job here! I loved this interview!
Love Dr. Greger, so excited Darek finally had him on, always great information from both of themm keep it up!
Two great minds together, what a good video! You asked perfect questions to cover a lot of info in a short amount of time, while keeping interest. Awesome job!

You're welcome! thanks for watching :)
Dr Greger is the best of the best! Love this interview. Great work Derek!
This is such a good video. Great questions!
I love him!!😊
It’s funny Simnett got me started and gets me good recipes and Dr Greger gives me good science. Love to see this collab!
You nailed it with your questions!!!
This was great! Thank you.
Awesome collab! ❤ Dr. G’s “awww” at the end just got me.
