People think potatoes are unhealthy because they grow up eating them fried in oil, covered in cheese, sour cream, butter, salt, etc. With that said I do still love french fries...
It's so nice to hear someone talk about the corruption in the banana industry. No one ever talks about the lack of human ethics and bananas. Thanks for the helpful hints, Derek!
Why is this the 1st time I've heard about the banana industry? Between us we eat 5-6 a day! Thank you for always offering information about ongoing issues within the food industry. Now looking for both documentaries and I will be more mindful of which bananas we are purchasing!
This was a shock to me; but I live in Australia and grew up as a kid in an area where there were so many bananas grown that they used to give away some in our local cornerstores when it got too much!! 10c a kilo and no one is buying them, that sort of thing 😉

Fair trade bananas, organic tofu, frozen berries, kale, frozen peas, protein pasta, green and red lentils, peanut butter, tahini, potatoes, rolled oats. Great stock items for home cooking. I would add a variety of nuts, seeds and ground flax seed.
Definitely did NOT talk to much. So much wonderful information to pass along. Sure appreciate your videos! Really well done. Love your recipe videos! Thx for creating them and encouraging us to eat healthfully.
Great list. Thank you! Just a little addition to oats, they are actually incredibly nutritious, they contain manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, folate, B vitamins, decent amount of protein. Thank you for emphasizing their high fiber and cholesterol lowering quality. I agree that adding berries to oats make them of the chart healthy. I tell all my patients to eat oats for breakfast.
Another excellent video! My list: beans, frozen berries, oats, potatoes and bell peppers. By the way, I'm so thankful for your video today: it finally gave my three year old son a reason to sit still for a few minutes 🙂
Yes, bell peppers were definitely a consideration for the list. On another day they would probably make the list. ;) Glad to hear about your son. Haha, glad I am entertaining enough for the little one. Haha, 3 year old learning about soy usage around the world. Gotta teach em young!
Yes to all 10 of these!! 🙌🏻 I would put spinach instead of kale on my list but that's only because I find it way more versatile in every meal. 🌿❤ Big up the greens!
Thanks for the list, Derek! I do have to say one thing. People with metabolic disorders (blood sugar issues - insulin resistance or diabetes) like myself should probably not be eating potatoes, because they are high glycemic and they can cause a surge in insulin production. It's not just calories in/calories out. Hormones like insulin (aka the fat storage hormone) matter, too. I love potatoes, but I only have them as an occasional treat, because they do cause me to gain weight. Otherwise, I have to follow a low glycemic diet, in order to keep things from getting out-of-control and to avoid getting full-blown diabetes. My point is, please don't assume that all of your viewers have a healthy metabolism, because that's not true.
I love all of these foods! I made kale chips yesterday. OMG! They are soooo good they made me dance. You are really a vegan when kale chips make you dance. 😊
Great list! I agree with it all. Here in Florida I'd say Collards are the best green that's always in season and cheap instead of kale, though. But we also often have great deals on kale. Plus, collards are cruciferous so it has the sulfur compounds that Dr Gregor suggests eating every day. We say pawstah. I've never heard anyone say it the way y'all do lol
You reminded me to eat toast with peanut butter (or sunflower butter), with bananas & I top it with a bit of honey. Kale should be organic it’s extremely high in pesticide residue. I don’t think you mentioned that. Great video!

Loved this video! Just a random idea for you to try if you like Zucchini Bread... Add a medium finely chopped zucchini to your oatmeal! You get tons of great fiber, you sneak in a serving of veg, and you can’t taste it! It’s so delicious!! It’s been really helping me not feel “heavy” after eating oatmeal, and honestly... it’s just digesting better 😂 but really, try it!
Our top 10's are a match. You will always have a place in my heart since you suggested adding tahini to smoothies (I think of you every time I make one). Your enthusiasm and positive attitude is so welcome in these times. Thank you for being you.
Such a simple video Derek- brilliant. Simple choices are so often the best. I am currently a super busy mum doing medical training and it’s tough to get good nutrition in a hospital setting believe it or not. Keeping things simple and getting enough calories quickly really helps keep me fuelled :) I’ve learned so much from you Derek..thanks for staying so passionate. Hoping to be a plant based doctor when I qualify 👍🙏 Keep up the great work!
Another hack to make your bananas ripen faster is to put them next to some apples. Apples emit a gas that causes fruit to ripen faster, especially if you put the apple and bananas together in a sealed bag, or poke a hole in the apple. Hence the reasoning behind the saying “one bad apple ruins the whole bunch.” 🍎 This also works for ripening avocados. 🥑 Also, i love oatmeal and chickpeas. They both have that flavor that is paradoxically sweet and savory at the same time. They are a match made in heaven i swear. 😋

I'm so glad that you mention fair trade bananas... I've stopped buying cheap bananas about a year ago. The fair trade ones are a pretty steep mark up, but totally worth it for my conscience. I don't think I can call myself a true vegan if I didn't care about our fellow humans' well-being as well.
For those who it may interest, raisins are an incredibly calorie dense fruit also, with a good iron content. You can eat a pound or so of raisins, actually maybe even less, and it is 1400 calories or so. Next time you're in the store check the raisin box and be amazed.
@@imabina7425 ah ok yeah I get what you are saying. I think the dried raisins are still healthy, just not as much as soaked. I do think there is something to water content as well.
Love his vids. 2 decades vegan, nutritionist here. One thing to point out (and the only disagreement) is this…too much protein is a real thing. You do not EVER need to buy high-protein pasta. It’s a money grab by the food companies only. You’ll get enough protein in your well-rounded diet.
I’m so sad with the potatoes you didn’t go lord of the rings on us :p “boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew!” Great list!! Thanks for the content as always :)
I enjoy bananas, oats and peanuts lots as well. Lentils ,very enjoyable as well. I do love almonds and cashews, carbs in general(like sweet potatoes),bok choy and kale (but worry about plastic packaging. I also grew up on peanut butter, bananas and oats. Ginger and garlic are my flavorful staples, personally, love pungent foods. Mashed potatoes, can't go wrong with these.
I tend to put frozen peas in my smoothies- just because it’s easy. I will check out kale though, as I’ve never blended that. I eat “groats” now instead of oats. Have you tried them. They are delicious 😋 I had stopped the frozen smoothies over the winter 🥶 as it’s cold in 🇬🇧, however more recently I’ve thought “screw it” and I keep a fleece on while I eat it 😂
Amazing video love this kind of information! You have such an incredible channel. It's been so helpful in my health journey and also very entertaining as well.
I made my list before watching your video to see how I came out. I picked 4 of your picks, but that being said , I do eat everything that you pick for your top ten. I would have to have romaine, apples, black beans, yogurt, cauliflower and broccoli.
Love your list. All basics for me as well. I would add mushrooms. I have them just about every day. From Portablello steaks to the "meaty" addition to all my concoctions, they are a go to for me.
LOVED this video! People often say to me that being vegan is too expensive. This video debunks that idea! And, having diabetes and heart disease is what's expensive 😳💰💰💰
Do you ever eat savoury oats? I definitely associate oats as being either sweet or slightly plain with cinnamon. But some people eat them with savoury ingredients and flavours.
Beluga lentils. Especially sprouted Beluga lentils. The tastiest, best in texture, highest in phytonutrients. Easy to sprout. Not expensive. You can find them at some natural foods stores. I order 25 lb bags, organic, from a natural foods co-op. So glad I found these.

I’m so sad with the potatoes you didn’t go lord of the rings on us :p “boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew!”
Great list!!
I found you looking for calisthenics routines. And thnx to you I'm starting my transition to veganisim. : )
Love that you use frozen products
I tend to put frozen peas in my smoothies- just because it’s easy. I will check out kale though, as I’ve never blended that.
I eat “groats” now instead of oats. Have you tried them. They are delicious 😋
I had stopped the frozen smoothies over the winter 🥶 as it’s cold in 🇬🇧, however more recently I’ve thought “screw it” and I keep a fleece on while I eat it 😂
Wow, I can't believe it, that could be my top 10, too! Nailed it!
Love these types of videos
Thank you! I aim to please.
Your delivery kept me interested. Perfect pitch with some personal humour yest informative.
Amazing video love this kind of information! You have such an incredible channel. It's been so helpful in my health journey and also very entertaining as well.
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. I am so happy I can help!
wow just watched bananas at any cost. Im buying organic bananas from now on. And I love that tofu scramble quick and tasty
"You can boil them, mash them"
Me: Stick them in a stew?
Great video! Pls do a piece on natural protein powders?!
😂😂😂 YES!!
Yes, somebody said it 😂 LOTR fan spotted
Immediately where my mind went
Samwise said it best. Tatters.
Chia! It goes in the green smoothie pitcher every day ❤ and Thank You for the heads up on buying organic oats and lentils
I love learning about food information here even though I’m not vegan. 💯
Go vegan
@@mike-wi8wm should be his choice. It comes when one is ready
I made my list before watching your video to see how I came out. I picked 4 of your picks, but that being said , I do eat everything that you pick for your top ten. I would have to have romaine, apples, black beans, yogurt, cauliflower and broccoli.
After boil em, mash em ALWAYS comes: stick em in a stew!
I was so disappointed when he said steam them instead of stick em in a stew 🤣
@@victoriag332 Oh yeah that's a great way to use them too! I can't remember everything!
@@Simnettnutrition I actually almost always eat my potatoes steamed but it would have been the perfect lord of the rings reference 😎
This comment is tragically under appreciated
I was just going to write that too 😂
Love your list. All basics for me as well. I would add mushrooms. I have them just about every day. From Portablello steaks to the "meaty" addition to all my concoctions, they are a go to for me.
I missed Derek talking facts about foods and the nutrition contents of them.
Great video!!
😊🌱

LOVED this video! People often say to me that being vegan is too expensive. This video debunks that idea! And, having diabetes and heart disease is what's expensive 😳💰💰💰
I agree, these foods are so nutritious and pretty cheap! Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching.
"In no order, number one: bananas"
Oh come on Derek, don't lie to us. We all know bananas are your number one 😂
Greetings from Sweden. Well , your list was good, but you forgot the most important ever, hummus! Thanks for a great channel!
I'm so surprised dates were not on this list 😂😂😂
They could have been, but what would you take off my list and replace with dates? Its so hard!
@@Simnettnutrition Easy! Potatoes 😅
I almost never use them.. Dates are much useful :P
Noooo way!! Potatoes are the bests
@@lilladosay7707 I prefer sweet potatoes :) But if I will have to choose, its definitely dates rather than sweet potatoes.
i barely use dates and tofu too :D last time i ate tofu was like... three years ago? but the rest of the list is must haves :)
Foods I eat all the time... tofu, kimchi, noodles (currently loving soba and banza), brown rice, broccoli, kale, chard... and pears and bananas :).
Yeah, you said "In no particular order," but we all knew bananas would be 1st! LOL
This made me smile. Thank you for that.
RICE!! I try to imagine, Life without rice…. NO, I can’t! :) Thanks Derek for inspirational Video, like always.
