A trick for the pilot bearing, if you have a loaf of bread use a single slice without the crust and maybe a sliver of water if necessary, pack it in and you can use a 3/8" ratchet extension either 3-6" and tap the bread in, when it pops out you just pull out a clump of bread and its the easiest cleanup without the grease mess.
I didn't see whether you applied thread locker to the flywheel or pressure plate bolts, but if you didn't, I'd recommend it. My mate had a flywheel bolt come loose and shoot around his bellhousing. Not mad. The other thing that is usually done when mating an R154 to a JZ engine is you bolt the flywheel to the engine and slide the clutch and pressure plate onto the input shaft on the R154. Then you bolt the transmission to the engine, slide the clutch disc up to the flywheel and do up the pressure plate bolts through the inspection holes in the bellhousing. Doing it that way makes it simple to bolt the gearbox to the engine and impossible to miss align the clutch disc as it's on the input shaft when you bolt up the pressure plate. Hopefully that makes sense! Otherwise you're doing a great job, props!
Yea, I didn't show it but I did apply thread locker to both the flywheel bolts and the pressure plate. I saw someone install the transmission the way you describe... it just seems to be harder that way. Idk though havn't tried it
as you start the pressure plate bolts wiggle the clutch alignment tool at the same time, you want it to stay loose all the way thru the bolt tighten process. Re check to make sure it goes in very easy after everything is buttoned up before fitting the trans.
As always, you do a great job! My friends think I'm going too far with my 240z resto-mod, doing too much "little stuff," but when you've something apart it makes total sense to replace things like the main seal and the pilot bushing, and especially if you have some extra time to find new clutch bolts. I'm using grade-8 hardware to put my rear suspension together and I think it's a relatively cheap way to have some piece of mind. Thanks for filming and sharing all of this!
Definitely, I actually replaced my suspension bolts with grade 8 bolts as well from a local Rural King haha. Pay by the pound. Made things cheap but strong too! No more rusty bolts.
What car did this come out of? I've never seen that shift housing before and cant find it upon my research. From shortest to longest, Mk3, Soarer, and remote mount MK4. The shift housing you have looks like it came from an IS300 W55 very interesting
Hello - you are missing two rings from the opposite side when you flipped the flywheel over … please look up Toyota diagram. One is a cone shaped one and one is a flat washer. If you notice your pressure plate wiggles when you’re spinning it when you’re done, it shouldn’t have that play.
Looking good so far! Just curious, did you replace the crank belt pulley key? It broke when you were removing the pulley and wanna make sure you dont run it without one!! 😊😊👌👌
Man everything is looking great i staryed folllowing quite awhile ago now at the time i had someone litterally give me a 76' 260z (long story short it didnt go through) made me sad i couldnt get the car but your 280 is looking great
@@StewartMotoring yea it sucks i fell for it as soon as i saw it under a 2" layer of dust tucked away in a barn next to a 79 cherokee cheif and an 80 pontiac boneville diesel all i could do was look at what people were doing and from everything I found i like yiur build the most keep it up cant wait ti see it going
Good work , im mounting mine back (208,000 miles) back to 7m peple said to drop the motor by itself its easier. but i dont believe that. anything else you would suggest?
I saw the sticker, and I assumed you installed the disc in the way the sticker indicates it, but usually, that middle portion which is completely flat should be facing the flywheel and the portion that sticks out a little - transmission. As you mentioned, it is a cheap eBay clutch kit. They could have placed the sticker on the wrong side. I just replaced the clutch on my Toyota Altezza with the racing one from Exedy, the disc goes in the way I said.
If they put the sticker on the wrong side... then yea I can't help that. Just followed instructions. I reached out to the company and asked them to verify. I'll let you know on their response.
After watching it again, I agree it's installed backwards. Any clutch I've ever installed the flat side faces the flywheel and the raised center section is towards the transmission. That being said, I've never installed a clutch where the disc can fit backwards because they foul on the flywheel, that includes my R154 to 1jz I did a few months ago.
Hey just wanted to let you guys know that yes, the manufacturer put the sticker on the wrong side. I really appreciate you guys letting me know. I have pulled the trans off and switched the disc. I was so frustrated and still am that this happened. They will not respond with any kind of compensation for their mistake
MyBlueZed that Think center the clutch on te center of the flywheel so that tool coms with clutch kit I think is plastic when you install presure plate you need that tool to center the clutch so tranyy fits inside in the clutch and pilot bearing sory for my english.
That's correct Jeton. It's called the clutch alignment tool and yes it comes with the kit. You leave that in until you are ready to put on the transmission. It keeps the clutch disk center of the flywheel and pressure plate so it doesn't fall down until you are ready to bolt up the trans. And yes I removed it lol.
Still holding up. Not many miles on it. Probably less than 200. But it’s probably got 15-20 hard pulls on it. Holding up to that. I did put a bell housing blanket on though cause it sketched me out having a cheap clutch. Don’t want it blowing apart ha
Still working. I haven’t been harsh on it yet with clutch kicks and burnouts etc. but I’ve done many highway pulls or pulls in general and still works fine. Very aggressive though, I’m about to change my mc size to a smaller one to see if it gives me more engagement travel for easier street driving. Right now it’s either engaged or not lol. Very tough to not kill it.
It’s already a 3/4 wilwood mc. I’m lowering it to a 5/8ths. While a 5/8ths will increase line pressure more travel will be needed to make up for the reduction in fluid. Which is what I’m hoping is the case. I’ve got it, just need to install.

Instead of packing it with grease, use the corner of a bag, like when doing pastries or cake decorations.
Good idea. lol pastries

Very nice transmission restoration and installation video.
I'm watching without sound. This is hilarious. My 154 needs 3rd gear and bearings.
Hahaha. You should have seen the clips that didn’t make the video... funny to watch
you first fasten the gearbox to the engine, and then fasten the clutch to the flywheel.
That's a lot harder IMO
@@StewartMotoring you forcibly fasten the gearbox to the engine, there is a chance to damage the clutch disc with this installation.
Yes it also states it on the disassemble and install manual

Did you have to get new pressure plate bolts? And if so where? Currently doing an r154 swap in my jzx100 and the stocks ones don’t fit

Where did u get the bearing and seal from ? Link please

Hey man, just wanted to let you know that you installed the clutch disc facing the wrong way!!
Ahhh but I didn’t. You can see in the vid there is a sticker on the disc that says “flywheel side” and when it’s installed you can’t see it 😁

This is what's up, I think I want one of these cars.
I think you forgot clutch adjusment key Pin inside
Jeton Zeqiri Was that the thing that looked like a tow bolt? I wondered about that too. At 14:12 I don’t know what that is though. 😊

Thanks and subbed, ill be catching up on all your datsun vids
thank you!!! appreciate it huge!!!! Once we bite deep into the chassis building...it should be fun!!!
Lmao earned a sub for that rear main seal sequence
What is that stuff you used inside the transmission for cleaning? Brake cleaner?
Yea I think so
great video thanks for the how to !
Is there a block off plate for that hole at bottom left by the bell housing
There inspection covers
W-58 in my 1983 supra was almost the same as yours. what are you building?
Yea the two transmissions are very similar. Building a 1jz for a 280z. Didn't you see?
Hey bud, you think you could tell me where you picked up the premade clutch line from?
Pretty sure that was driftmotion
@@StewartMotoring thanks man!
So after a year, how is the clutch holding up? Any issues?
No issues, seemed to hold find on the dyno for 460+ hp
Where do u refill the transmission from
What about the thrust washer thats the weak part on the r154,? you upgrade it?
I didn't

What company and model clutch is that
Clutch master. Customer service is crap. Cannot leave a review on the ability of the clutch yet.
what misimoto sandwich plate is that?
wondered my self. my Misimoto broke after 200 miles there so called warranty non existent

What kind of shifter is that?
Oem shifter that came with it
