  • Zach from ECU Master stopped by the shop so I had him chat to us about JZ engines. I ask him the differences between the 1JZ and the 2JZ, and all the different versions. We learn their limitations, why they work so well, where they came from, who designed them, and much more. Drifting has been a showcase for the 2JZ engine because drifting is so abusive on engines, but the JZ just keeps on plugging along. They have great oiling systems, they sound amazing, and they can make huge HP and still spool a turbo just fine. We even chat about how to make these motors shoot fire balls.
I had never really seen a FAQ video about the JZ engine, so I figured I would just make one. Also, he answered a lot of questions about all the different variants of the JZ engine, such as the 2JZ-GTE 2JZ-GE 1JZ-GTE VVTI vs non VVTI, even the direct injection 2JZ.

I have a '94 SC300 (2JZ-GE, 5-speed manual) with an aftermarket turbo (338 rwhp @ 13 psi). For years I was plagued by exhaust leaks between the head and manifold. I finally fixed the issue. Some of the studs had stripped out of the aluminum head and I installed Helicoils. The other issue was that the cast iron manifold itself was warped. It had to be removed and the mating face machined flat. I reinstalled the manifold with doubled graphite gaskets between it and the heads. I also fabricated and installed an 1/8" thick solid copper gasket between the manifold and turbo. Since those repairs I haven't had any further issues with the engine.

hi everyone couple quick tips for building jzs as I have done a few, stock bottom end 2jzge non vvti are great just chuck a gte oil pump and crank trigger setup on them with a gte inlet cam with the cam trigger and you have a 9.5-1 comp 500whp reliable every day setup. personally I throw a 1jz head on them and run around 22psi of boost on e85 as when you put a 1jzgte head on the comp goes over 10-1. but there's a 500+hp setup for under 1k. happy drifting

Most of this is very good information but I do have a few things to add, #1 the Pistons on the vvti 2jzge crack on the ringlands over 350whp if you don't have a great tuner, #2 the ge's doesn't have oil squirters in the block so people that drift tend to want to run them because of the better oil pressure because of lack of them, #3 an the reason why 1jzge head's are so popular on 2jzge's is because the intake manifold front facing, #4 an this is very important the stroke on a 1j is 71.5 an a 2j is 86 so by All rights they shouldn't be interchangeable I've never verified this but I don't see how it's possible, #5 Journal 1 on the 2j is 23mm and the rest are 20mm an all the journals on a 1j is 20mm, #6 vvti is great for drifting but not so much for drag after 600hp or so it's not useful an that's why big hp guys don't run vvti an the big hp guys that bought vvti 2jzge's just because of there availability eliminate the vvti system an run non vvti cams.

Aaron, love the videos but in all honesty you're asking all the questions we want to hear but the difference in audio volume, you being behind the camera versus with the guy, why not do a host and interviewer side by side shot, ask your questions where we can hear them. In the end they are your videos and I know you aren't afraid to get in front of the camera.
    Best Regards

I don't know if vvti is always a good idea. It makes some maintenance harder.

I thought the first gen Aristo came first with the 2JZ.
First year of the Aristo was 1991 I believe.

My is300 2JZge used to leak oil like crazy. I did all the cam seal valve seal water pump and timing belt. Now the engine has no engine oil leaks.

I get a feeling these guys can completely take apart and reassemble a 2jz in the pitch black with nothing but a safety pin and a Junior Mint.

Bore and stroke is closer on a 1JZ hence it has a longer rev limit...

From what I know the VVTI is weaker than the non vvti, na-t ge cooling like the intake usually has to stay stock with that big ass housing on the top of the engine (not housing but I don't remember how they call it) and it swapping a custom one, really doesn't work that well. This is what I've heard, I'd love to hear everyone's opinion tho. :)

I like the format on drift technology. I don't have one specific topic in mind. Maybe the same approach for turbos, transmissions, an LSX, or LSDs, steering setups, etc. The do's and don'ts. The limitations and potential trouble areas. I think new enthusiasts could benefit and avoid some frustration. Just my 2 cents

Any information as far as boosting a 1JZ-GE Non VVTI? I know it's not a very common boosted engine so I just wanted to see if anyone has done it and has any info on what would be interchangeable through the JZ realm as far as aftermarket parts goes for boost applications? Example: if I go single turbo NA-T could I use the same aftermarket turbo manifold from a 1JZGTE and it would match up to the head fine? I can't really find a whole lot of information on the 1JZGE Non vvti (1 Gen 1JZ )
