Hiya Lady Stardust, wow, 169 comments on this video! Okay, some are you, okay and me, but person after person saying, thank you for a wonderful video. A wonderful help for starters on this journey. Well over a hundred people all learning to be jewellery makers, it says a lot for this profession that so many people can design and want to learn. These are just the learners fortunate enough to have found you who decided to comment. 55,454 people have watched this lesson, how many have learned from you? A lot of us I would say!
    Stay safe, Steve...

".....or a chair..."! I LOVE her!!! Every new (and older) channel re-invents the wheel: ("How to make a bezel.........zzzzzzzz."). BUT (!!) I must say, this was the most entertaining, spot-on - LOVE the comments of insecurity - video of said wheel reinvention. It's a REAL experience! Basia kicks butt with her little torch (I love the big sigh she breathes when describing her torch limitations). I wish this was the first one I ever watched when I was learning that project first. Basia is a fantastic teacher, so approachable, encouraging, it's like she's got her cheerleading uniform on complete with pom-poms, rooting for the watchers/students' success! Her video is truly fun, and delightfully (and refreshingly) humble. Who doesn't love that in a teacher and guide?

hiya flower good one again, I started of with one of those little torches I was forever filling them with gas costing a fortune, I saved my pennies up for quite some time then I invested in the eze torch or orca as its called uses propane, 25ltr bottle I think it was about £23 but lasts for ages, you do not need any oxygen with it as you mix it on the torch think its ambient air or something , when I was using one of those small torches I think I got about 3/4 bezels done then ran out of gas half way through another made me sick, I think the torch was just over a $100 when I got mine but I highly recommend it, for someone just starting out its cheaper than the little torch set up or if your on a tight budget, those small tins of propane gas 3,4,5,£ per tin depending where you live fills the torch 3/4 times or you forgot to replace and run out half way through a project and the shop is shut arrgg, take care keep well keep safe very much look forward to your next vlog.

I AGREE! I've heard that the Orca/EZ torch is the most common/used torch around the world for just those great reasons you mentioned. Simple and great price. I have yet to use my Smith Little (given to me by a retiring jeweler), love my simple (Smith Silversmith - similar to Orca and far less expensive...) torch.

🥰👏Oh Basia, I can't say ❣THANK YOU❣ enough for making this video. I really thought I was doing something wrong🤔 when trying to solder a larger project. I kept heating and heating it for what felt like FOREVER🤱😖 lol.... only for it to go almost black and the solder not flowing, so I panic and stop and of course I pickle and then try again (without success😭). Eventually I gave up on that project😟. Watching your video📽 I can now see I need to give the piece more time when heating🕯, I need to wait a little longer and heat🥵 more gently. Going in too fast at the begining (using the same torch yours), is maybe why my piece gets so dirty so quickly and maybe that dirt is hindering the solder from flowing?. Most importantly I shouldn't give up so easily😉 lol. Awe thank you Basia for creating these fabulous videos🎞🎥, I really have learned so much from you... especially as I have been learning to solder in lockdown, your videos and words of encouragement have been paramount to my short, but fun, soldering journey. Thanks for your inspiring me 🤩 and I will definitely dig that piece back out and have another go!🤞. Sending you tons of love & hugs.

Did you take note of the flat plate silver Basia used to back the piece when she fluxed it? The flux spread evenly across the silver with every square mm covered. This is because she cleaned every bit of grease from fingers etc off the metal. Solder will not flow on greasy surfaces or dirty ones, the dish soap removed the grease, the full coverage of flux allowed the solder to flow when it got hot enough. Worth noting. When my little touch is not enough, I use two! Two torches used to heat the whole thing means twice the power to bring the silver to temperature. The gas flame does not melt the solder, the silver being at the correct temperature does!
      Stay safe, Steve...

@@WireWrapJewellerybyDiane Hiya, no I don't have a channel, but thank you for your kind words. I know a lot about a little, or is that a little about a lot? Anyway, I've learned a lot from Basia and other teachers like her, plus what I've learned throughout my working life, mainly as an electrician. I'm more than happy to share what I have learned as that is how I learned. The community of makers on UA-cam is quite fantastic in how they just share what they know. Some charge and I'm signed up to one, a Londoner who now lives in Japan, but most are quite happy to share. The guy I follow from Japan was a top-end Bond Street jeweller, or 'Diamond Mounter' as he calls himself, and his channel. He does share a lot for free.

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I very much enjoyed watching you work, thank you for your skill with the camera & computer as well as your silversmithing tools! Your skill with both sets is very advanced & worth emulating! Some might say it's to easy a topic but it is also a very important one, so help in gaining skill in all levels of work is worth watching & learning!!! So again Dear Lady, thank you so much for taking the time to help us all. Showing the over heating was a brave move & its repair worth watching & learning...

@@stephencoster9532 Hi Steve, thank you for your sweet comment! :)) You're right, I was debating whether I should show this fail, and maybe it would be better to stick to the "perfect" one, but I've decided that I'd rather stay real and show how it looks like, especially when working with these smaller and weaker tools. Thank you for watching 😊❤

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I loved watching, your honesty is part of your charm & hiding the damage would make some people wonder if you did 'Over heat' & need clean up, so owning up is good. Am I right in thinking you know Kim? She can use the 'Go Gas' torch in a garden shed so could you not use it in your flat? No oxygen bottle & she says she does not need one for the work she does! As to calling it a fail, I would call it a part of life making jewellery. The slightly larger size that Andrew uses as do I, is more powerful but still what might be used in a kitchen. Cooksongold sell it. Take care Dear Lady & stay safe... Steve x...

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing My opinion (though nobody asked) it was NOT a failure, just a reality of physics. You do what you can with what you have. Great job! I feel vindicated, lol!

I would use hard solder to join the bezel ends and medium for the back to prevent the bezel coming apart when soldering the back.

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing or if I didn't have two solders, i would start heating at the furthest point from the bezel joint when soldering the back. There's most always more than one way.

Thanks for making these videos for us! I'm just starting out and they've been extremely helpful. Are you using hard solder for soldering your bezel and backplate together?

Thanks so much for sharing this video! Very inspiring and educational. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a video on making a pendant with an open back? I have not been able to find a video on how to do that and those are my favorite types of pendants when the stone is exposed in the front as well as back. :)

So so detailed and helpful! I absolutely love your videos! Would you be able to share the size/gauge of the bezel strip? Is there one that can be used for most stones? Also, would you recommend the same gauge for gold filled metal sheet as you’re using here? Thanks in advance!

It's iron binding wire, it's great for soldering. If used to bind silver pieces together, it should be removed before pickling and never put in the pickle. Thank you so much for watching!
