OMG ! I cant believe you just answered a question/problem I have had that even Midas couldn't answer when I called the company !!!! The PAINTBRUSH !!!!! The metal on the paintbrush ! I was having issues with a bit of what looked like rust on pieces a while after making them . I thought it was bad patina or the container or a number of reasons ! I called Midas and Rio Grande and no one could figure out why ! Such a simple fix !!!! Thank you ! I actually stopped making jewelry because of it and have everything ready to start up again !! I had some beautiful pieces but could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong !! I wouldn't be able to let that piece go if i had made it ! It is gorgeous !!!!! Thanks so much !!!!
Oh my goodness! This makes me so happy to hear!! I had the exact same issue where my patina looked like it was starting to rust. So frustrating! Ever since I switched to the plastic paintbrush I haven't had any issues at all with my patina. Also, if you haven't tried it, I suggest using renaissance wax for any places you apply a patina. The wax will actually darken the patina (which is the desired look I try to go for) and it will help prevent the patina from fading/discoloring over time 😊 Here is a link to it if you're interested! This stuff has been a game changer for me! amzn.to/36dXhic
@@SpiritMountainSilver I have some of th eRenn wax but you use it as a top coat over the patina or on the silver and then patina...I wondered if the patina would take if i used the wax first. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!! Game changer !
@@jadeheart911 I apply it after I patina my piece! That's actually another cool hack with the wax now that you mention it.....if you apply the wax to an "un-oxidized" surface and then try to oxidize where that wax is, the surface wont be touched and will remain as is!! It can be a great way to protect anywhere you don't want the liquid oxidizer to go!
That is BEAUTIFUL 😍❤️!
Oh my gosh. What patience and skill you have. Thank you for sharing your art.
if you did a beginner series, i would watch EVERY video, no matter how long. your tutorials are SO HELPFUL!!!!
I actually do have a beginners series! I have videos on how to make a basic silver ring, the tools you need to get started, along with a metal starter pack etc. They're my older, full length videos so you might need to scroll through my channel a little to find them! Here is one video you can check out but I'd take a look at all of them! ua-cam.com/video/nrG_nqMrQgk/v-deo.html
I really love your work....very very nice piece from France 👍👍👍
Wow - you added all those decorative bits in the same soldering process - I did not know that was possible.
Sweat soldering!
The good old "if you use your bench/clothes for art, ur a real artist" or you don't have the tools.
Both stereotypes are valid.
Your work is beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Love your videos! So detailed & informative! ❤
Thank you so much!💛
Awesome video Leah!! I truly feel like the last couple years of learning on UA-cam would have been so much easier with videos from start to end of the process like this - so many videos just show snippets or specific parts or are too long/not concise enough --way to go!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Aww thank you so much Mandy! I am so glad you have found my videos helpful!!☺️❤️
Absolutely stunning salad!
Oh and the piece was even more stunning! 🔥
Hahaha thank you!💙 It was quite delicious!😋
Great video! Learned a lot!
Glad it was helpful!😊
I truly admire your sense of composition and harmony...

What you are doing is EXACTLY what I'd like to do. You're so inspirational. Thank you!
Aww thank you so much for your kind words!
Great video! Your voice is so fresh! Your pace is perfect. Tip: I keep my oxidizer IN the plastic brush. It is good for months. Just store it brush side up.
Thank you!!😊
Thank you for sharing 😊
My pleasure 😊
Love the piece ! Nifty quick release you have on your foredorm ! I have to say I find ways around using mine because it's a pain to change out the bits
It's amazing! It's the H.20 Quick Release Handpiece. Here is a link to it if you're interested :) amzn.to/3s0O6dF
Beautiful and as an Artist myself I love seeing the process!
So tempted to try this! But what I respect is the amount of work that goes into a piece like this because it gives me a greater sense of understanding and appreciation of what the artist has gone through to create it.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!!
This came out awesome ! Extremely detailed u never really know how much goes into a piece
Thank you!!😊❤
Leah, I agree with the comment below. You have a gift of teaching as well as being an outstanding artist. They don’t usually go hand in hand.
Thank you so much!! That means so much to me.💕
Lovely pendant Leah. Your work is fabulous and you are a saw goddess! Thanks for sharing your technique with us.

Aww thank you so much Mary! This comment just made my day!!😊 I am so glad you are finding these videos helpful!💙
That's some good work. I prefer patina over very shiny, myself, so I'm glad there's an easy way to oxidize it.
Hola..que lindos tus vídeos ..me encantan.
You did a wonderful, detailed job with your video. The pendant turned out perfect, nice job. Stand proud.
Oh thank you so so much!!
Your work is absolutely beautiful! I picked up so many useful tips in this video. Thank you so much and look forward to watching more of your demonstrations. I am a silversmith and have been for years, I always continue to learn!

Wonderful tutorial, so easy to understand with lots of hints and tips. I just wish that I could have turned of the drums off; very distracting and eventually annoying, sorry. I have subscribed and look forward to more of your tutorials. Many thanks for sharing.
WOW 😳 beautiful ❤️
Thank you! 😊
@@SpiritMountainSilver I do bead work, loom work, anklets, etc.... And have a very large collection of silver rings and turquoise stuff, and been watching your videos, and really am thinking about trying silversmith, not sure at the young age of 54 need to start something else.....😁
wowzer Leah , what a beautiful piece. I have watched your feather and flower videos as well and practice, so tiny for arthritic hands, but will keep at it. Would you mind sharing what gauge silver do you use...and i heard you use #5 for blade, is this what you tend to use more so than other #;s? Im trying to understand better the blade # and the gauge # and when to use what!! also curious about the plastic paint brush, never seen anything like that, could you share where to get this...... thank you so much for sharing, love your video;s...btw...waving at you from vermont!!!
Hi Kristine! Thank you so much for your kind words!😊 I like to use 22 gauge for my backplates! I have found that 5/0 works best for me with that gauge of silver because the blade isn't too big that the teeth get stuck, but not too fine that it takes forever to saw out a piece lol. I actually made a saw blade guide for reference from one of my previous videos! Here is the link to it :) drive.google.com/file/d/1QT6uUdGcqSCStxHJ3eEAUSfF9fP-uOVN/view?usp=sharing
That plastic paint brush I use to apply my patina is actually just a water paint brush! You can fill the paint brush with the oxidizer, however I chose not to god forbid if it did leak that would be very very bad...just my luck that would happen to me.🤣 Here is the link to that as well! amzn.to/3sP8ygK
That is truly beautiful. You are so talented.
Thank you so much!💛
I'm trying to write a book where my main character's family are silversmiths for thematic reasons, but to do that, I gotta learn about it. This is very helpful. I have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there. Hopefully this book will be good in the likely three or four years it's going to take me to write it.
Oh so cool! I’m glad you found this video helpful!😊
OMG this is amazing 😍. The quality of your videos are perfect?! Clean and precise! I've taken several expensive training courses and yet what you have shown in this one video contained at least have of the course! Thank you so much for sharing and I am very impressed with your skills!
Aw thank you so much for all of your kind words, Nancy!!😊❤️
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for sharing, for someone who is just starting to learn about jewellery making, this is very informative :)
You are so welcome!
@@SpiritMountainSilver Would you be able to suggest a dremel/drill used for inserting diamonds into metal? I see they have different tips which create the angle for the diamond to sit in (apologies if you addressed this in another video) :)
I’m actually not super familiar with faceted stones so I unfortunately do not know the answer to this. I’m sorry about that!
@@SpiritMountainSilver No problem :) Thank you again
Thank u so much to show yr effort to make a wonderful beautiful design 👏👏👍🙏🤗

Enjoyed this so much! Can you give me the link to those polishing pads?
I am so glad! The link for the pads should be in the description under the "Polishing" section!
Beautiful. Thank you.
Truly a work of art. So much talent and artistry in you. Where does one go to find your jewelry; store, catalog, internet... ?? This piece that you made is absolutely spectacular, and the work you put in just shows how MUCH actual knowledge and talent one must possess in order to make this masterpiece as you just did. Fantastic job; I couldn't wait to hit the "Subscribe" button.

Beautiful piece! Thank you for sharing. 😊
Thank you! 😊
A big Awesome good job😊
Thank you so much!😀
Hi! I’m gathering my tools and watching all your video’s now. I have TONs of Questions!!! Like a Million… So I’ll start with just a few. Lol
First ~ Why do you cut such a large area outside of your stone setting? Is there a reason that this is done?
Second ~ How do you know what solder to use where? I know you list what solder you use for each step. I was just wondering if there is a method to your madness at using each type here and there.
And finally…
Third ~ What is the tool you use to hold the piece in place while you set the stone?
Oh! Wait! I lied!!! There is more!!! 😂
You use backing on your stones. What is it? Do you put it on yourself or do they come that way? Do you remove it before you set it or leave it?
Ok! I promise I’m done for now…
Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge!!!
Thank you! Wonderful video! Gorgeous peice!
Thank you so much!!❤️
what a beautiful piece!!

Love all of your videos!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! Question…do you tumble all pieces?
Thank you! And yes I always try to before setting to stones 😊
Lovely beautiful piece.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for the great tutorial.🙏🏽
Thanks so much!😊
amazing and beautiful! i love how you go into such detail. what’s in the pickle bath?
Thank you! And I use the bench basic smart pickle from Pepe tools!
Thank you for making this video and your other videos. I always learn something. Question:do you have a hammer tool for your foredom for stone setting. You are so good doing hand setting, just wondered if you had compared the two.
Thanks again for making these.
You’re welcome! And I do not, but I have been contemplating whether or not I should get one! It’s been in my list, but I have yet to pull the trigger on it 😬
Beautiful work, if I may ask what would this piece would sell for?
Thank you

wow beautiful work, love it I own a lot of navajo turquoise pendants, and rings,I new there where a lot of work that went into it but wow.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful pendant 🙏
Thank you so much!!
Support my channel brother 💓
Fantastic videos. I just starting to cab turquoise and seeing how it is set is very helpful. Do you ever end up breaking/fracturing a turquoise stone when you are setting the stone? I ask because I use a very thin epoxy backing on my stones.
Thank you so much! And I have cracked a stone before, usually one with very fragile pointed edges.😐
@@SpiritMountainSilver yes the pointed edges. I am very glad you mentioned that has I have been making sure this last weekend to avoid those.
wow
Tysm for the detailed explanation!
You’re welcome!😃
Very good video and beautiful work. I have a large Bow guard bracelet with two large turquoise stones. It was given to me by my father. It’s too big for my wrist would a silversmith be able to make a belt buckle out of it? My concern is heat and stones already set. Thanks for any guidance Leonard New Mexico
Hi, so great to see you on UA-cam! What a gorgeous piece. I do have a question; you take such care to saw so close to your components which looks great, but why do you use such a lot (large piece) of metal for the backplate? Also, bristle discs are SOOO expensive, do you ever use tripoli and rouge? I drop my pre-polish time to 10% of bristle disc time, by only using them for special tasks. Do you find you get a finish you like better? Always want to learn, thanks! And btw, its "MUSS- lin", like bus, fuss, cuss.
Thanks for watching! For the backplate, I prefer to leave a little extra room for soldeirng operations. During times when I don't get a perfect solder (where all elements solder down on first try) and have to go back and add solder to any areas where it didn't flow or flowed in the wrong direction, I prefer wire solder to do this which has the tendency to roll all over the place....and roll off the backplate. So to try and avoid the wire solder rolling off the back plate I try to leave a little more room so it is easier to work with. I also never waste any silver. Any excess silver I cut out from the back plate will be used again as a back plate for a smaller bezel or as piece to stamp my makers mark or other stamp designs. I have used tripoli and rouge before and although they give a nice finish I prefer the radial discs. I find they are easier to use and have MUCH less cleanup which is especially helpful to me because I don't have a sink in my workshop to easily clean off the polishing compounds. When using radial discs combined with Zam to finish off the piece I get a superb shine. I highly recommend Zam!
Very nice(:
Excellent video! Thank you so much! What kind of patina did you use? I don’t see it listed on your supplies list.

what did you spritz on the piece at 3;00 min. I don't understand how you soldered that to the back plate.
Flux! And I used medium solder wire placed on the inside edges of the bezel
Great work. Very informative. I’m just getting into making turquoise jewelry. I lost all I had been collecting

Great video thank you.
Thank you so much!
Hello! Beautiful tutorial!
May I ask what gauge silver sheet you used? I didn’t hear it in the video.
I am just getting started and I’m so excited. My mother and grandfather were both Navajo silversmiths but both are passed and I want to get back into silversmithing so thank you!❤
Thank you so much! I like to use 22 gauge silver. :) And congrats on your journey! It is such a fulfilling art
I am completely brand new to silversmithing. I am looking into it. I cab stones and my wife does wire wrapping. The pickle pot? What is it and what is it used for? Now reference the tumbler. You only use water and soap?
The pickle pot contains a pickling solution in it. This helps clean the metal after soldering. The tumbler has stainless steel shot in it. I use that in conjunction with water and dish soap to polish my jewelry
awesome! Thank you for sharing 😉
Thanks for watching!💙
what kind of medium do you use in your tumbler? Would you recommend a harbor freight tumbler?
I use stainless steel shot with water and a little bit of dish soap!
Great video, so clear and easy to watch, great angles! Can I ask which torch you use and how steady the flame is when you turn it down low?
I used the big shot gt8000! Link to it is in my description😊 I really only use this torch at one setting. For smaller soldering operations I use my berzomatic torch which also is linked in the description I believe!
Do you have to wear a respirator for the whole process?
Anytime I am using my torch, polishing, sanding, oxidizing etc. I will wear a mask!
Do you pickle in between all of your soldering operations?
Yes I'd recommend it!
Which solder did you use for makers mark and bail, please? Would you please consider a quick vid on polishing? I have no idea what to buy. Thank you!
I used easy solder for those two!
Hello Leah,
I'm liking your channel and your skills and ideas for silver-smithing. It's something i am very interested in doing myself too!
I am thinking i will begin with more base level techniques and ways of shaping and using silver and then gradually growing my abilities by adding tools and techniques over time.
Would you be willing to answer some questions i have and also share ideas and kinda see where I'm coming from and maybe correct/help my thinking process about this? let me know if this sounds good and maybe we can assist eachother even if it's just through ideology etc. thanks!! i can give contact info later if you like this idea!
