Great video! I just ordered the 2016 Gear 260 for $164. I could not justify buying the 2017 Gear 360 for almost $270 more. I'm hoping I made the right choice. Looking forward to receiving my camera. I would love to see photo and video comparisons for the 2016 & 2017 gear cameras.
I haven't' had it overheat while shooting but I usually never shoot continuously for more that 5 min. But I do have it on for over half an hour at a time shooting here and there and its never shut off. I have had it shut off while transferring a large video to the phone though.
I use the new Gear360 to live stream church every week. It runs for a solid hour with no problems, but my phone gets really hot, so I use it without the cover, and the phone dies before the camera. Almost afraid to hook up a battery pack because I don't want it to explode...lol. But still, no problems on the camera side using it's most demanding feature.
Have you done the side by side video comparison? The one side by side video comparison I have seen on UA-cam in 4K appeared to show a softer/lower resolution image on the 2017!

On the 2017 model if you select single lens then its 3mp which is woefull in its quality. I debated long and hard and ended up buying the 2016 model and very glad I did.The diference in video quality isnt obviously apparent and the 30mp stills are superb especialy as unused but 2nd hand 2016 models are £100? Considering getting the nano air for live streaming and the cost of two cameras only equates to one 2017 gear 360 (especialy as it only streams in 2K same as the nano air).

I want to capture the entire sky as the Moon's shadow approaches from the west, encompasses us, then receeds from us to the East. After watching your vid, I'm tempted to purchase the 2017 because of what you said about low light and resolution. Any chance you can make a sunset time lapse with both so I can see if I want to upgrade?
I would like this 2017 model to be exactly like the previous round one because how the hell should I now mount this new one to my helmet?!! The handle should have been detachable of course or something, Samsung listen! Because I don't think there is another model of this like the previous one?

No sir, you are incorrect. They have different video resolutions than photo resolutions. 2016 video is 3840x1920 at 30fps. 2017 is 4096x2160 at 24 fps "true 4k" 2016 photo is 30 megapixels, while 2017 is only 15. Bottom line, you need both. Or you can just buy the Vuze 3D camera for $800. I have all three.

The manfrotto tripod is nice, there's a newer one now, will the legs come out in the shot when recoding in 360? The legs seem wide

If you use it a lot than I'd say its definitely worth the upgrade for the better battery life and better video quality.
Easy answer, 2k16 for pictures, 2k17 for video. Neither does the other well.
