It 's like that that parody the onion did where you control a guy who's playing an MMO. I'd rather people try to create spaces like this real real again, rather than to go to this place virtually, alone. Other people can join you but they can't play the games? That's not the point of an arcade.
I've been waiting for this video for a long time Clint. Been a long time fan of the channel and when the team told me you got a key, I was very happy and I eagerly awaited your feedback. That being said, much of the criticisms you brought up are things we've heard in the past (ease of use, interactivity, etc). On behalf of the team, we really appreciate this feedback. It was incredibly well thought out and very valid. It really helps us know what we need to focus on and what needs adjusting. I'll be sure to share this video with the rest of the team and have them see it. Thanks again Clint! -Matt Community Moderator for New Retro Arcade: Neon P.S. Nice Duke poster :)
Hi Lazy Game Reviews. Thank you for playing our game New Retro Arcade: Neon. We sincerely appreciate your feedback, it is much appreciated. If any of you have suddenly gained interest in NRA:N and have any questions, feel free to create a thread on our Steam forums. We are there to help. :) We also have a "Arcade Builer Guide" under our Steam Store Guides section, be sure to give that a look. Have fun! - Joe
I can understand why, emulation of copyrighted software is really on the nose, hence why we have to add our own ROMs so you're not legally held responsible. The only way you'd be able to get it on the Playstation Network is if and when copyright goes away and intellectual property and ideas aren't held as viable financial assets for corporations to exploit.
It's a very interesting concept, but it quickly became apparent to me what you're up against, and competing VR programs that have more general utility and take less work to set up. Good luck, it's a great idea, but I'm starting to worry that the legal complexities of dealing with emulated games is going to really hamper basic usability of New Retro Arcade. Some things are clearly a technical issue (like why can't we move the arcade machines and other props around from WITHIN the environment) but needing to supply your own emulators, and roms, and then not even being able to play with others really hurts, and that's less a technical issue and clearly more an issue of not wanting to get sued or arrested... Kind of unfortunate. But anyway... Good luck nonetheless.
Awesome video, I like your approach on reviews. Much better than screeming at a microphone and I like that you spent a good amount of time with the game before showing us! This channel has been my best find in a long time.
They should totally add a few old school computers with CRT monitors so you can add the ability to play your own PC games like Commander Keen, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit, Unreal Tournament...you get where I'm going with this. VR Lan party anyone? :D
When you say "old school" do you mean as in retro or do you mean as in old computers from schools? Because in this context it would work either way ^.^
Excuse me Mr. LGR, my name is Jorge and I just wanted to stop by and say how awesome my lunch break at work has become after discovery your channel. It's filled with so much nostalgia, Simlish, tech talk, and stories of old! All things I could listen to for hours on end. LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
This is incredible, this seems like something that a lot of future front end VR tech could be built around, using the unreal engine as a framework for it.
THIS is the type of stuff I want out of VR. It legit is making me consider the Vive for just this. Knowing that people are actually are considering stuff like this, and feeling like we could get more stuff like this, I'm finally starting to get hyped.
Yes actually. I've been very un-impressed so far, not with the tech, but the types of "games" released, focusing on scaring people, or "so you're on a mountain..." stuff. That's great to highlight some of the stuff it can do, but that's not what got me interested in VR. I've been interested in Racing Games, and more, if you want to go this direction, something more like what I would do with the Holodeck in Star Trek TNG. This falls into the latter of what *I* would be wanting to get out of VR. Knowing that a studio such as yours are going in that direction more than jumpscares and the like gives me higher hopes than I have had based upon previously released entries for VR. If I see more of these sorts of things I very much would likely finally invest into VR.
I'm hoping 2017 is the year for VR, valve releasing new games and hopefully bethesda releasing some games. We're stuck in a chicken and egg phase right now where people aren't buying Vr because developers arent making games and nobody big is making games because there isnt the userbase yet. That said, valve is prepared to go full on and I hope they make something wonderful
I'm so glad you posted this. I love your arcade videos. I'm in the process of building a Mame arcade cabinet and progress had slowed a bit; this just got me inspired to get the dang thing finished. Thanks. VR is going to lead to even more amazing things like this. So exciting.
Having experienced the 80s for real ... It feels almost unbelievable that in 2017 we have emulators to "experience" a virtual 80s/90s world. Its awesome that something like that is possible, and at the same time it makes me feel ... ancient and old. Still, I'm really happy that VR is really into our lives at last. It was about time.
Someone with money and a knack for advertising could easily create a space like this again for an older crowd (and make it also a bar). Things like this don't have to be consigned to virtual reality.
+Margatroid Problem is that you're limited mostly by customers from the local area and running it as a bar for main income when 90% of the customers are likely going to be male will have you file for bankruptcy faster than you can spell Sausage Party.
this game.. application.. front end thing has alone given me a reason to get a vr headset (other than maybe making some "unique" projects for university). plus I'm also a sucker for arcades and the prospect of being able to basically play space harrier on a cab (albeit a virtual one) makes me happy. thank you for showing this off!
So there now exists virtual skeeball.. How long untill virtual, virtual skeeball? Futurama got it right.. :) What is it with Matt Groenings creations and predicting the future?
In the 80s I always dreamed of being an adult and spending as many quarters as I wanted in my favorite arcades, but life's cruel irony destroyed them with better home games. One of them is completely gone, along with the entire mall that housed it. The other moved to another location and deteriorated into a shithole of broken down overpriced 90s sit-in machines, tons of ticket games and other gimmicks, and with lights on full brightness. So I'd love to recreate those old places in something like this.
Depressing, isn't it? I went to Shaky's about a year back and the arcade section wasn't fit to even be called one. Crane games, ticket games, and no arcade game to be seen.
You're telling me. The real salt in the wound is that the single 80s machine in the entire place, a combo Galaga/Ms. Pac-Man, has a failing display and all the colors are wrong, and it's been that way for months. They don't care. And they still want 50 cents to play it.
I feel so nostalgic and comforted by the noise and darkness of those wonderful rooms, the blacklights illuminating the crazy UV carpet designs. I can't wait to play this and hope they come up with true multiplayer where you can join someone else's server and play all their ROMs, even multiplayer. That's what this really needs to be a killer VR app.
One thing I'd love to see again is a dome hockey game. My brother and I would dump handfuls of quarters into one. And when we didn't like the last play - we'd mash the 'BOO' button on the side to hear the fans' displeasure!
If you are lucky though, you can ask to buy it off their hands and fix it yourself, a friend of mine did that with a TwinHeli cab at the local pizzeria.
Agsma.... yep, I think Anarchy is even a bit more flexible, I've made a few maps for Anarchy Arcade... one is a huge super arcade, that you can display an entire collection in.
+bestvideomaker lol Apparently you didn't take long enough to explore all of the features.... yes it has 3D desktop features, but it also works as a 3D arcade emulation front end..... If you wanted to, you could even just use it for building maps to explore.
anarchy arcade use to have vr support, it may get it again soon cus devs on hl2vr got hl2vr working again and will provide source, im friends with the dev of AA, it may be like nra but has differences
I still can't believe Valve put so much effort at making Source VR-friendly only to scrap it altogether. I mean yeah, ten year-old software probably isn't suitable for full VR support and thus working on Source 2 with that feature implemented makes more sense, yet that makes me wonder why did they do it in the first place if they probably knew it wouldn't go well, let alone reveal the project to the public?
Now THIS is what would get me to buy into VR. Ultra-customizable chill virtual hangouts you can actually invite other people to? This right here is already on the cusp of something I'd buy and devote a lot of time and energy into, but it feels like before long there'll probably be even more customizable -- and easy to customize -- hangouts with more options, more co-players at once, and maybe even netplay for the games. Stuff like this would be even cooler IRL of course, but for those of us that aren't multi-millionaires this seems like a cool alternative.
The shared theater/video watching experience thing in this seems so intriguing. I love the idea of being able to sit down with a group of friends in cyber space and watch movies or even just youtube videos together. Reminds me of the weird Xbox360 netflix interface that let you sit in a virtual theater with your friends Xbox avatars and throw popcorn at each other.
Oh yeah, it's a neat experience for sure. I haven't tried it with other people in this VR app in particular, but in the others I've tried shared viewing is super neat.
Great review. I would love to have a go at this but I think it only really comes into it's own in VR. The major downsides are that it leaves you with a great deal of work to do yourself which is an extra hurdle to get over for what would be a nostalgic experience for most people. I've recently gotten into emulators and love the experience it delivers. The front ends are fantastic but require a lot of fiddling and frankly I can't be arsed to do that again with this programme especially when I don't have VR!
I would pump it with true retro arcade games like pacman, mspacman, donkey kong, defender, centipede, robotron, frogger, dig dug, space fury, popeye, marble madness, tempest, battlezone, asteroids, irobot, starblade, galaxy force II.....and so on. I would have the sounds play loud in the background to faithfully recreate my childhood arcade game room.
This is the VR programm i defenitaly want to step in because then i cam immerse myself into 80 & 90's and find out what i,ve missed out as a child, veterans will re,experience those old day's it's like traveling back in time. This is fucking awesome.
I downloaded this originally when it was for the Oculus Rift DK2! I still have it too! Nice that they came out with an updated version of it. :D I'll have to check out that Pool/Bar Room VR. :D
I love this app. It requires alot of work, but its rewarding after its done . Anyone else noticed the cinema rug looks like the one in Overlook Hotel? 🧐
ive never been to a retro arcade, i dont even know if they even exist anymore all i ever see are those hunting games and race games you know the ones i wish i could experience 80s arcades for real
i gotta say, this more than anything else makes me covet a Vive. I love this kind of slightly impractical UI, and would probably endlessly fiddle with the customization on mine.
Hey there ALurkingGrue. Most of the time when MAME is missing a specific ROM or ROMset, it will crash. If you want, feel free to make a post on the Steam community with the games you're having troubles with and I'll be there to assist you. -Matt
They should team up with new retro wave to get some of their great music! I first thought it was the same guys, since the names and logos are so similar..
If you don't need it to work with VR headsets, there is a free option that is pretty much identical to this called Anarchy Arcade, which is created on the HL2 engine.
I wonder if it would be possible to utilize multiple video cards for more advance arcade titles, then the output is sent to the game engine to put onto the arcade cabinet?
This looks neat. Does anyone know if the music at 01:58 was made for the game (given what's said about the radio later on, I doubt that), or is it a song one can find in this reality? I tried using the Google Now music identification feature, but it didn't find anything.
Hey there William. The song you're hearing is "Robert Parker - Flashback". You can purchase the soundtrack on Steam. Comes in MP3 and FLAC format. -Matt
Clint, do you plan on review some old space sims someday? WCnews is working on a full fledged remaster patch for Wing Commander Prophecy, and there's an Guy on GoG making a full fledged Source port of X-Wing Alliance with Unity.
you made me finally hungry for VR. I love arcade and if I can have for exemple the T2 arcade in VR it would be a must have ! I have a very recent PC now (core i7 6700k, geforce GTX 1070, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD) thanks to canard PC, but no VR headset and I doubt I have the room for it. However it seems not so much is required, is there ? Which VR headset would you recommend ? Thanks !
Oh i love how it is. Old games you can play and do stuff. Just imagine a group of people in the VR room playing games and watching VHS movies lol. That be fun lol
Do the New Retro Wave guys have anything to do with this? The synthwave playing in the arcade itself reminds me of something they'd post, and the logo looks extremely similar.
I assume you can also customize the arcade cab inputs to like work with an actual arcade stick set up? might be a little janky to switch between the two with what is essentially a blindfold strapped to your face but hey it'd be swank af if you could.
You can do most of the stuff you mentioned if you hack the config file. I got really into learning what this game could do but felt limited by the Mame support. It won't take regular Mame bios unless you package them yourself which I have not figured out.
Anarchy Arcade is a very similar thing to this but not quite as polished. You get a choice of locations and start with an empty space that you can do anything you want to. It's also very fiddly and complicated at times but if you like that sort of thing its not too bad.
I have this game and have yet to configure any of the arcade machines to run any custom games. It is a lot of work but the game itself, vibe and the music is very pretty :3
honestly, if I had VR, and you could edit the room without having to leave the program, I'd pick this up! it seems like a great frontend for emulation.
I have tried New Retro Arcade Neon with my phone in a Google Cardboard headset tethered to my PC with a USB cable and some software that emulates a Rift, and it was suprisingly good considering my suboptimal setup! Customizing the arcade is a bit fiddly, but it will be well worth it if you sit down for a few hours to customize everything, because you won't have to touch it again unless you wish to swap out the games. However, I would love it if the team behind New Retro Arcade could maybe get into talks with Sega, SNK and other publishers that rereleased their retro console and arcade games on Steam to let us import those games with pre-made marquees, an official emulator core and everything with just a few clicks, similiar to how Garry's Mod lets us use models, props and everything from other Source Engine games if we have those installed.
Finally, now I can pretend to play games while I play a game.
I see what you did there... ;) - Joe
It 's like that that parody the onion did where you control a guy who's playing an MMO. I'd rather people try to create spaces like this real real again, rather than to go to this place virtually, alone. Other people can join you but they can't play the games? That's not the point of an arcade.

Ooo! And b-bit microcomputers! Like a Spectrum or BBC Micro.
Nate B it's called beta bigscreen it's litteraly vr Lan the best I've seen so far.
its about time man, Ive been looking forward to this review for a while.
I bought it day 1. Glad you can enjoy it!
my god even the florescent carpet is dead on, lol. wasn't even around in the golden days of arcades and this a total nostalgia bomb!

theres still some good arcades like timezone but mostly modern games n costs more
There are plenty of these in different cities around the world, like 'Round 1' in Concord, CA.
this game.. application.. front end thing has alone given me a reason to get a vr headset (other than maybe making some "unique" projects for university).

So it's pretty much Anarchy Arcade built on UE4 and with VR support. That's neat!
Anarchy Arcade is a 3D desktop with shortcuts that look like arcade mashines

This is the first time I've actually wanted VR. That bar/pool hall one looks really cool, too.

Thank you!
That looks really cool!
I loooove the glow of the neon in there!!
has anyone set up a Polybius machine yet?
I think I might have made one a while back. Should be in the Artist's Alley sub-forum on our Steam Community. -Matt
It would be too dangerous!
I saw the AVGN at a video game expo last year and the had a polybius machine there!
Yeah I did but you can't really play that one just watch the horror effects I did, I also made one of the video tapes The Ring!
With VR you could have hallusinations start after leaving the game, start subtle and slowly ramp it up to really fuck with the players.
holy hell this is one of the coolest VR experiences I've seen
Thanks for the video, Clint. I got a Vive about a month ago (in part thanks to your positive review) and wondered whether/how often you still use it.
The shared theater/video watching experience thing in this seems so intriguing. I love the idea of being able to sit down with a group of friends in cyber space and watch movies or even just youtube videos together.

I've seen a lot of videos about VR and this is the only thing I've seen that would cause me to even begin to consider investing $700. Very cool!
Nifty program. I'd definitely check it out.
Great review. I would love to have a go at this but I think it only really comes into it's own in VR. Ah, Pepi soda, man. That really brings me back
For a beginner in VR, getting trough the first level is a real challenge, without upgrades. Once you have some upgrades, it gets a lot easier
Holy crap dude this might just actually get me into VR.
I downloaded this originally when it was for the Oculus Rift DK2! I still have it too! Nice that they came out with an updated version of it. :D
I'll have to check out that Pool/Bar Room VR. :D
A VR arcade was my dream for so long...
That would be awesome with online interaction
This is been few years since my last visit to an Arcade store!
now i want to open a virtual arcade. people would come in put on the vr headset and be transformed into the arcade.
itaybron theres tron vr being worked on lol
now that sounds awsome
Transported, not transformed.
Gotta say, even without a VR headset, I had a lot of fun with this.
I love this app. It requires alot of work, but its rewarding after its done . Anyone else noticed the cinema rug looks like the one in Overlook Hotel? 🧐
One thing I love about this is the prospect of being able to play light gun games.
This makes me so excited for VR mmos in the future.....
My God, this is brilliant looking!
I might try this out. Thanks LGR.
New camcoder Clint ? This is extra crisp, I like it!
Yep! Thanks :)
Man i'm not even gonna divulge what i'm gonna do in the Arcade hall; AMAZING stuff.
ive never been to a retro arcade, i dont even know if they even exist anymore
all i ever see are those hunting games and race games you know the ones
i wish i could experience 80s arcades for real
When I was a kid, it was unthinkable that arcades would go away. UNTHINKABLE!
i gotta say, this more than anything else makes me covet a Vive. I love this kind of slightly impractical UI, and would probably endlessly fiddle with the customization on mine.
That's fantastic to hear. New Retro Arcade: Neon is all about customisation. - Joe
I love when LGR gives me a quickie
Wow that looks cool! Great vid
Wow this is soo cool!! Makes me want to get a vr headset
Funny! I was just setting this up over the weekend. It can get really crashy with some roms but overall I really love the snot out of this thing.
Hey there ALurkingGrue. Most of the time when MAME is missing a specific ROM or ROMset, it will crash. If you want, feel free to make a post on the Steam community with the games you're having troubles with and I'll be there to assist you.

Cool thing - new and retro PC on one desk. Please, make a room/desk tour!
They should team up with new retro wave to get some of their great music! I first thought it was the same guys, since the names and logos are so similar..
This made me super nostalgic but also super sad. Because of that nostalgia.
i'm not even a fan of vr, i'm just here for that smooth voice.
If you don't need it to work with VR headsets, there is a free option that is pretty much identical to this called Anarchy Arcade, which is created on the HL2 engine.
I am a sucker for Neon...the 90's kid in me is happy ahaha :D
I like that you don't need VR to play, as I don't have the money and computer required to get one right now!
Holy shit are you kidding me? This is almost exactly like the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror!
I wonder if it would be possible to utilize multiple video cards for more advance arcade titles, then the output is sent to the game engine to put onto the arcade cabinet?
You should review Freespace, and Freespace 2; those are two of the most iconic old school games for me.
-Matt
i bought it YESTERDAY. i consider just the home theater maybe the best VR theater out there
WELCOME to the family staberas, have you joined us on the Steam forums yet? :) - Joe
i joined the reddit, i have some minor ideas/suggests :D
That's amazing ! Specially now with pandemic. Wish the dev adds NetPLay support so other people/visitors can play the arcades too.
huuuuge fan of the new synthwave genre, not too keen on the neon aesthetics, but I'm still waiting for more professional productivity software for vr
Oh man, new retro was trash when it came out, looks so different now! Gonna have to check it out again.
Clint, do you plan on review some old space sims someday?
WCnews is working on a full fledged remaster patch for Wing Commander Prophecy, and there's an Guy on GoG making a full fledged Source port of X-Wing Alliance with Unity.
This has to be the only thing I've seen that makes me want to get a VR headset.
you made me finally hungry for VR.
Thanks !
I still stick with the HTC Vive for most things, although I haven't gotten to try the Rift since it got Touch controllers.
Oh i love how it is. Old games you can play and do stuff. Just imagine a group of people in the VR room playing games and watching VHS movies lol. That be fun lol
This looks a lot like "The Video Game Years" intros to arcade games, I wonder if they used an earlier build maybe
Would make an arcade dedicated to all the Japanese fighting classics like Tekken 3, Marvel vs Capcom, and King of Fighters
This looks incredible :)
You can do most of the stuff you mentioned if you hack the config file. I got really into learning what this game could do but felt limited by the Mame support. It won't take regular Mame bios unless you package them yourself which I have not figured out.
There SHOULD be a ready to go IMAGE anywhere already setup with most popular stuff in it (Even if does not have roms) that would be amazing.
Can you review the Lego Racer games? When I was a kid, Lego Racer 2 was my favorite game up until it was either lost or scratched to oblivion.
This sort of stuff should be blowing up right now... yet here we are xD
Anarchy Arcade is a very similar thing to this but not quite as polished. You get a choice of locations and start with an empty space that you can do anything you want to. It's also very fiddly and complicated at times but if you like that sort of thing its not too bad.
I want a program like this so desperately that allows for custom maps to be created to place your stuff in...
I have this game and have yet to configure any of the arcade machines to run any custom games. It is a lot of work but the game itself, vibe and the music is very pretty :3
Anarchy Arcade seems a little more customizable and easier to set up but the VR aspect is pretty cool
honestly, if I had VR, and you could edit the room without having to leave the program, I'd pick this up! it seems like a great frontend for emulation.
Wow this video was a month ago? I remember it as if it was just last week
Fun Society customization would be sick!
This is so cool. I wish the Vive wasn't so dang expensive.
