To be accurate it also needs one coin light to be burnt out, and the other to be flickering. Also one of the coin return buttons needs to be permanently halfway in.
Actually, to be truly authentic, many of the Tempest games had problem with the CRT failing, and the game will be appear to be experiencing an never ending earth quake.
Your video quality, your perfect lighting, your supreme sound, your awesome voice, your high-quality content. There are reasons I subscribed to your channel. And the main reason is how I sympathize with your nerdiness. We love you Clint.
Love that uranium bottle lamp! Tempest was my favorite arcade game when it released. Something about vector tube games in general like this and Battlezone.
Growing up this was my sister's fav game. She named her cat Tempest and he was the coolest cat in the world. :D Brings back a lot of great memories. Thanks for the vid!!
You really need to stub out some miniature cigarette butts on the bezel and douse the machine in beer and filth for the full authentic effect :-) Maybe put a teeny footprint and dent in the coin door too...
Tempest was my favorite game growing up. I'm getting one of these machines. I wish they would do Phoenix which is an obscure shooter but was always one of my favs in the arcades. Game on!
Tempest was one of my favorite arcade games back in the day, but I never found a home version I liked because of the spinner control could never quite be duplicated.
Cool mini-arcade. I started buying pinball machines many years ago. I played the hell out of each game for about a month after purchase. Then my playtime tapered off to a trickle. When I got up to six machines my game "room" was full and I hardly played with them except when friends dropped by. I enjoyed working on them more than playing them actually. I eventually sold them for a very nice profit and now I collect PC games on Steam and GOG. They take up a lot less room but aren't nearly as much fun to work on. Congrats on 1M dude. That's huge!
It looks amazing. The detail is fantastic. Even the packaging is great. Congratulations to all involved in it's creation. I love the look of it. Thank you for this video.
@@RetroGamerBB Centipede plays just like the real thing. You have to get used to a tiny trackball vs the usual size one, but it's a dream. I am not even a fan of Centipede, and I like the small version A LOT.
Tempest was in the basement of the student union when I was in college. I spent a lot of money on this game! I sucked at it, but it was fun. Played some pc ports of it, but it really needs the spinning knob to do it right. This version however, I may have to pick up.
The only retro artefact missing about this is that it uses an LCD instead of a CRT just like the life sized ones. It really gets me retro vibes playing old video games like this on a CRT.
I remember Gamester81 or somebody talked about this machine a while back, they said the smaller spinner was just to give it the authentic look when it’s just sitting on your shelf. The bigger one is for when you actually play it.
I love it but i just know id hurt my weak eyes focusing on such a tiny screen for that long but that aesthetic and quality, so good, thankyou lgr another good video as always!
I have both their Centipede and Tempest cabs, with the SF2 cab on pre-order. Been really happy with them. They're also the perfect size for using as props for 1/6 scale Hot Toys figures. Ever seen Darth Vader playing Centipede? I have :)
I kinda love how there has been this trend for smaller arcade machines as of recent. From bar top arcades down to keychain arcades. Yet nobody buys normal sized arcade machines haha. Understandable though, because they are very huge and those smaller ones make for nice nondisruptive decoration.
I bought one and it is awesome for any Tempest fan from back in the day. Great to have one of my favorite arcade games at home without having to buy a full sized arcade machine and the headaches that go with maintaining it. As you said in the review, the only problem is the spinner knob is not a free flowing spinner like the one in the arcade. It has click points so you have to work a little more to get from one side of the grid to the other which can be a pain at the faster higher levels. Overall, well worth the price ~$120.
That was a great video. I remember when the Tempest machines were in the local arcade. I wasn't good at it but it was fun to watch other people play it successfully. The one you bought there is just awesome and it's great to see a min-Tempest be made and in that size. It would be great to make a mini arcade in a house. When the games are not in use, set them in a mini-arcade room that would resemble the real thing. Just need some properly scaled mannequins to look like they're playing, ok, maybe that's too much.
It's cute and all... great for display and building that 1/8 scale arcade at home without having to build a warehouse or lugging a 300 pound machine around... BUT... what is the fascination of playing on 3" or 5" screens with these games? Walmart has a bunch of the smaller retro games for sale (most of which eventually clear out at $5-$7) and I see others like this around. I don't have small hands and I'm sure would get cramps holding the tiny spinner. I want this on my 75" Samsung turned 90 degrees with MAME and an X-Arcade controller or custom spinner! Go big or go home!
Amazing how time flies... I remember seeing this in the local YMCA when I was a kid, and I now realize that it was likely a brand new machine back then (1981). Dang I feel old.
That mini cab of Tempest is amazing. It looks just like the real one. I seen and played a real one before and I loved it. I loved feel of it and the look of the vector graphics too.
I definitely need to get myself one of these, absolutely loved Tempest back in the day. Ps I own a few full sized arcade machines and they're still as addictive as ever.
While the original arcade Tempest cabinet did have a spinner that moved more freely, it did also still have a noticeable click per space moved. My uncle had an original arcade Tempest machine that he somehow got for almost nothing back in the mid-80's that he kept in his bedroom. The rough sound of that spinner going around has always stuck in my head.

Perhaps someone can make a vector replica using the many 5" CRTs that a lot of boomboxes and cheap TVs used.
Perhaps a higher resolution screen would help if there is such a thing that small, but it would drive up the price.
