I still play Streets of Rage 2 and even the new one, Streets of Rage 4, is an excellent modern throwback to the series.

@@ClassicCo-op Do a video on Final Fight LNS Ultimate 0.4 to get the word out, more people need to know about it, it's made with all the classic games assets so it falls under "classic" still. It also has co op. Read my other comments for more info. I can't believe I didn't find it till recently, but i'm glad I did. It has an INSANE amount of content. My only complaint is that when they stand up they only have one voiceline, but that's the only bad thing you can say about it. When you start playing it and you see the character select screen, and then you start grasping the combo system and mechanics, it feels like a damn fever dream, it's almost too good to be true.
I totally remember Metamorphic Force at old arcades as a kid. Wow, I haven't seen anything about it online until now. Blast from the past.

Great list, River City Ransom is definitely a gem, there was yet whole set of those games the Technos' Kunio-kun series. Here some others come to my mind: Renegate, Robo Army, Alien Storm, Armored Warriors, Captain Commando, Splatterhouse series and much more 😁

Go play Final Fight LNS Ultimate 0.4 and prepare to have your mind blown. If you like beat em ups, it will be the best decision you've ever made. You won't believe your eyes. Don't let the 0.4 throw you off, this game has 120+ characters with TONS of moves and an insanely deep combo system. It's built in the Streets of rage engine. Forgot to mention, it's free.

My favorite one is "Golden axe, the revenge of Death adder". But I still enjoy all the others too, especially "Cadillac and dinosaurs". However, I remember a 3D arcade beat 'em up that was amazing in the 90s. It was starting in a shopping mall and it was really beautiful and addictive. I don't remember its name, but for me it was one of the best arcade beat 'em up ever made.
If Gladiator catches your attention, then you need to check out IGS's other beat em ups, namely Knights of Valour series and Oriental Legends series. KoV has 5 main versions, and is based of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. Oriental Legends has 2 games and is based on Journey to the West, and Gladiator itself is based on a martial arts novel called Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Sabre. Each have their unique mechanics.

One of my favorite genres, it’s hard to list my absolute favorites because there’s so many. TMNT, POW, Captain America and the Avengers, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Streets of Rage 2, X-Men, Simpsons, etc…
And I just want to recommend Sengoku 3 to anyone who’s a genre fan. Only found out about it a few years ago, and at first it seemed repetitive, but once I learned its moveset and combo system, it became extremely addictive. And the characters all play very differently.
Sengoku 3 is one of my favorites!

As much as I like Altered Beast, I don't really see that as a beat 'em up, more a platformer/adventure/action game. Punisher and Captain Commando I agree were badly missed here (for me). I must express slight confusion as to the genre 'beat 'em ups', because I couldn't understand why Street Fighter 2 was missing. Are we now having a separate category for 'one-on-one beat 'em ups'?

Ive always had The Punisher as one of my favorite games, even now, on emulation plays really well in my opinion. It does share the same main flaw as another of my favorites, X-Men arcade, that the enemies lack much variety.

Great list, a lot I've never heard of. A couple I'd add: Die Hard Arcade on the Saturn, Fight n Rage, though it's more of a recent indies recognition of retro beat em ups.

2:16 That Double Dragon 2 game on NES is weirdly the best one in all of the Double Dragon games... save Battle Toads & Double Dragon. In Double Dragon 2 good strategy helps allot!
8:04 Battle Circuit is among the best Arcade Beat em ups I know of. It is super quirky and funny while the gameplay leaves you allot options on what you can do.
9:23 Guardian Heroes is a game that can keep you at it for a long time. The amount of stages and options when fighting is staggering.
16:59 Shadow over Mystara as well as the previous Tower of Doom are really going places with many routes you can take, and so many weapons and items you can unlock. I had the Sega Saturn collection back in the day, and played it for a week to see it all in both games.
18:03 Alien VS Predator is for me among the four best Arcade Beat em ups ever, together with Battle Circuit and the two D&D games Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara.
Loved AVP. I would forget that I'd had a pizza on order because I was playing it for so long.

Return of Double Dragon, aka Super Double Dragon, is the best DD game. It just got ported to modern consoles for the first time ever, and I highly recommend checking it out because it’s the definitive version. The port even allows you to speed up the gameplay, which is nice for those who don’t like the slower default speed.

The best is Final Fight LNS Ultimate 0.4, it's not even close. I'm telling a lot of people in the comments, but I feel like it's criminal that people don't know about it. Forget all of these, go try that right now, it's free. Go tell others once you try it. It's built in the streets of rage engine but it plays more like street fighter alpha or marvel vs capcom + streets of rage. 120+ characters with complete movesets, stories etc.

night slashers x rebalance on openbor is also very fun. I like when you have some more complex combat in a beat em up. the gore is also fantastic.

Great list overall. With some pleasant surprise selections like Battle Circuit, The Gladiator, but first of all: Metamorphic Force. I didn't expect the latter to be included at all but I am glad it made your list. Surely it's not the most advanced beat 'em up but the combat is fun, it has a nice "flow" so to speak, and the morphing brings a unique twist into the gameplay.
Unfortunately my all time top 2 isn't on the list though. Namely: Warriors of Fate and Guardians/Denjin Makai II. I understand your reasoning (you wrote in another comment) about that you already gave enough love to Capcom by including a handful of their titles. Anyway, when it comes to Capcom (the king of the genre imho), I think their entire beat 'em up catalogue is objectively top-notch (looks like they really set a high standard for themselves while making those games). So in the end it only comes down to personal preference who favors which ones.Therefore I can give you a pass for not including Warriors of Fate.
But you really missing out with Guardians/Denjin Makai II. It is probably the most underrated beat 'em up ever. With its robust (relatively to the genre) roster of distinctive characters and deep move sets, co-op combo moves etc, it should be really in the talks when discussing the best of the best games the genre has ever offered. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! Yeah, somehow guardians slipped under my radar. I know I’ve seen gameplay of it, but I’ve never actually played it. A lot of comments are saying how good it is, so I plan to play it asap!
Vendetta AKA Crime fighters 2 is also a good game, double dragon even though it has the OP elbow move is still a tentpole game of the genre also in asia Warriors of Fate is very popular on top of the fact it has so many modifications of the same game, Golden Axe 3 was at the tail end of arcade popularity but it was by far the best in the series with it very indepth pathing system and character abilities. My favourite for variety and depth is Shadow over Mysteria, its an incredible game.

Super Double Dragon and Bare Knuckle 3, the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3, are my top two favorites. The Hyperstone Heist is 3rd. Double Dragon Neon is 4th, and River City Girls would probably be my number 5.

@@ClassicCo-op Back in '98 (in high school) I had RCR emulated on my computer. One of my friends came over EVERDAY to play it. EVERYDAY. He didn't have a PC, so he couldn't just download it. So he learned how to play on the keyboard. AND HE WOULDN'T GO AWAY! Hahaha! It was like he was an elementary school kid again. It was like the Contra days, hahaha!

I'm old enough to remember when Retro meant something designed to have a style from decades prior. Somehow now it means something from decades prior... but not GTA 3, which is 20 years old now.
Right, the term should be vintage games. But everyone just says retro, so I gotta go with that so people know what I’m referring to haha. It’s kinda annoying.

@@liamconverse8950 Because the term got muddied and misused by a younger generation, until it's taken on a different context. Now it seems to be defined as at least 20 years old, but not 40.
I can best describe how retro was originally used as the TV show Happy Days was filmed in the 1970s, but designed to look like the 1950s. That 70s Show was filmed in the 00s and designed to look like the 1970s. Or in gamer terms, Shovel Knight.
Seems like a good list but I'm too big a fan of Capcom beat-em-ups to really relate to ones beyond that studio. Warriors of Fate is my favourite beat-em-up. The move-set is really diverse, with a tonne of great grapple moves. The characters are classic gorgeous Capcom. I still play it all the time. Oh and I only just discovered that there's a japanese version that lets you play as OP female fighters.

Sad, that I didn't saw here, my most favourite two representatives of Brawlers: Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Yeah, MKSM is considered the modern 3D Beat'Em Up, of course, although it's from 2005. May be next time:-)

An interesting one was Asterix ( based on the French kids character ). Very clever way to adapt the characters to a brawler format. A bit slow, but a fun novelty that showed some deep thought in design

Wow I couldn't imagine that I would hear about great games for the frist time, and I played a lot of this genre in arcade saloons. However I feel like some specific style of beat'em up is missing here. I remember Die Hard Arcade and Virtual Cop ( not Virtua ) blew my mind back in the day as a hillarious cooperative experiences. I would even rank them at a very top :)

No, the best one and i've played them all, is not even well known. It's called Final Fight LNS Ultimate .0.4.1, this game has like 120 characters. It has the entire street fighter cast for example, all the way up to sf4, and get this, there are tons of moves for each complete with supers. Not only that but there is a crazy deep ability to combo! Zangief has green hand shenanigans, dhalsim has his teleports, they really captured what makes each character distinct and translated it to a beat em up. It's difficult but fair. Trust me, you'll never go back to playing any of these once you try it, it's that good. I can't stress it enough how many moves and combos there are. The only downside is that you sometimes get juggled, but, there is an air recovery move for that. There is even a parry button! ONE HUNDRED 120 CHARCTERS WITH ALL THEIR SUPERS AND SPECIAL MOVES PLUS TONS OF NORMALS! You are probably thinking it must be jank, no, each character has a story, a movelist to reference in game, it's so insane that it exists and nobody knows about it. I can't stop glazing it, it's so good. It even has, kof characters! It also has multiplayer, TONS of modes, and so many characters to unlock like I mentioned. For the love of god go play it now. It's simple to learn, but make sure you read the tutorial and look at your move list, all your specials can be canceled from any other move including air moves which there are a few for each. You're gonna try a character and think, "they probably didn't put x move in here", they DID! Heres the best part, ITS FREEEEEEEE!!!!!
I'm sorry, all of these are ok, but holy crap it's not even close. This game is like if you mixed all of these together and then mashed it up with marvel vs capcom. It has all the streets of rage guys, streets of rage is like an atari game compared to it. Final Fight LNS Ultimate is the best beat em up of all time, and I can say that with 100% confidence that i'm right.

There is a great arcade game from Banpresto: "Guardians": a crazy beat up game with different characters (very diversity the options), and all the crazy things that we see in japonese games from 90s. Its worth it

Streets of rage 2 make every other beat em up feel like it’s son, although their is some beat em ups that feel like the greatest games ever made .! Something about the magic in streets of rage 2 makes it edge out everything else :

Talking about top 20 Beat em ups and not including The Punisher, Captain Commando, Knights of the Round and Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder , is a sacrilege.
I was trying to add variety, and I think capcom got enough attention, and I talked about the original Golden Axe. These are just my favorites. Can’t include them all.
I'm sure these imply more arcade but I want to pitch one I feel is criminally underrated for PS1, if memory serves.

Gear Fighter Dendoh is fun too. Good variety of moves. More a grappling based power archetype, which is interesting.

Good list but I Would have added Ninja Warriors on the SNES. AVP makes the top of my personal list, I think playing on an arcade stick makes all the difference..

I am STILL HOT the POW was not 2 player. I remember looking at the box and my mom getting it for my cousin and I to play. Turned on the game and nothing, we actually called the company and they were like yeah it was a mistake on our part.

Concurring with other commenters, a great selection! For me personally, Streets of Rage Remake edges out everything else, especially some of the custom campaigns out there and using my preferred gameplay settings. Closely followed by AvP which is just a fantastic package that stands on its own as Capcom's most polished beat'em up. I even discovered some really interesting looking games I haven't played yet, so thanks!

Yeah I'm not sure how you could leave off Captain America and the Avengers. There are a couple other Marvel games I also would have included, Spider-Man the arcade game, Spiderman vs Maximum Carnage/Separation of Anxiety.
Another I thought deserved a mention is Knights of the Round as well as Ninja Gaiden and Bad Dudes.
I enjoyed those games as well, but only wanted to include 20 games. The games are chose I just enjoyed more.

@@ClassicCo-op Death Brade / Mutant Fighter is a one on one fighting game with special moves and fantasy setting that is pretty rad (Data East pumped crazy and quirky games in the late 80s and this is one of their nicest one imho). Tecmo Knight is a beat em up I was really into when I was in middle school. Hyperviolent and weird af. Typical Japanese game of the boom years.
