About "B.Y.O.B.": Grammy winner. This song is about the business behind war, and how privileged politicians start them, but expect the poor to fight them. Creedence Clearwater Revival made the same point - then dealing with the Vietnam War - on their 1970 hit "Fortunate Son." "B.Y.O.B." is a term that means "Bring Your Own Booze." It is often used on party invitations if no alcohol will be served, but you are free to bring your own. In this case, it stands for "Bring Your Own Bombs."
Between CCR and SOAD there was Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" with the verse that probably influenced B.Y.O.B. more than Fortunate Son: _"Politicians hide themselves away_ _They only started the war_ _Why should they go out to fight?_ _They leave that role to the poor"_
Of all the lyrics to get attached to, "You depend on our protection, Yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth" is not a bad one to do so with. Considering the line's saying that presidents, politicians in general depend on the people to protect them in times of war but will gladly lie to them on just about everything from their expensive dinner tables, eating far better than the men and women in the military and thinking nothing of it. In a song that's stayed relevant since release, it's a biting line.
it can be interpreted in many ways too-a big thing for the 80's was getting the propaganda from TV over dinner. dinner was served with a side dish of lies. the song was about desert storm/shield, but like you said-it's definitely still a relevant point today if not more so.
My favorite band of all time. System of a Down is so unique. The characteristic and unparalleled voices of Serj and Daron along with the heavy and catchy melodic riffs and acidic lyrics always touch on very important themes for society. System of a Down are what we can call artists. "Aerials" could be next.
I still remember my first time hearing this. I was 13 or 14 at the time (31 now). I was at home watching VH1 and it played this video. The la la la part caught me off guard so much back then that I started listening to another of their stuff. Good memories of a simpler time when I was first discovering this kind of music
I love that stupidity. They hate social security and social support but they say "hey don't worry, some of the wealth of rich is gonna reach to you... Eventually"(if u or ur children don't die first)
Soad will command a different level of respect soon enough. “Lies from the tablecloth” is a phrase used to describe someone who is lying to you that you trust, such as someone you would sit down with for dinner.
It’s definitely not an accident that this is so catchy and hooks you on the chorus! Since BYOB hits on the propaganda and subliminal messages of war campaigns and popular media. That’s why it’s so ironic this song won a Grammy and was radio #1 for ages.
The lyrics are a direct commentary about the nature of war. Which under our current economic system, capitalism, is carried out in the name of profits for the ruling class, i.e the capitalist class, or the bourgeoisie if you're so inclined. They are also specifically commenting on the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Finally!! They only have hits. Try now chop suey, toxicity, aerials, sugar. Lonely day, prison song, hypnotized.. the list is long they don't have a bad song 😮
This song was written when the War in Iraq was in full swing, and it's about the American propaganda behind it. "Everybody's going to the party have a real good time/Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine."
I always equate the "Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine" to formations of soldiers fighting and the movement of war. It's just irony that they're showing soldiers' counterparts whom aren't soldiers enjoying college and having a good time. Great song though.
it's like the line "feed us lies from the tablecloth" many different ways of seeing it! I saw it as, because this was the time of operation Iraqi freedom, being one giant party for the US. because remember, 9/11 was a tragedy and we all cried when it happened. but our leaders took it and used it as an excuse to bomb the SHIT out of Iraq for the...2nd? 3rd? time.
This a great song and meaning behind it. Also the vocalist? You do know that wasn’t Serge screaming it…right? So not the main vocalist? Right? And do you know where the term balls to wall comes from? I’m just curious, I only know cause my general love history and technical stuff/systems. And learning about them and the past, mainly in a technology and war sense, but also over all.
Here’s a fun fact, take into consideration where these guys roots are, they released toxicity right around 9/11, now with that in mind, listen to the lyrics of jet pilot……… fucking cringe! That album was released one week before 9/11 and the absolute direct references about that day are 110% spot on! I mean spot on
Its abot "bring your own bombs" for a home party, what just means to bring your own beverages, but symbolizes: Bring your own weapons. Symptomatic of America's greed for war.

Worse, that wars are in another continent, but yet they say (Biden I'm pointing you mofo) "if we don't do something they gonna ATTACK US NEXT!!!!"
Between CCR and SOAD there was Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" with the verse that probably influenced B.Y.O.B. more than Fortunate Son:

B.Y.O.B. = Bring Your Own Bombs
You don't say
To let you know, the Guitarist is the one who screamed the line at the start - SOAD swaps between both Serj and Daron swap vocals all the time!
Daron is the most underrated backup vocalists. He is harmonizing with Serj all the time too.
@@cycomiles4225also Jerry Cantrell
@@cycomiles4225Agreed! I think their song “Dreaming” really shows how well those two harmonize.

its sometimes fun to watch someone who's high try to talk about something
What are your on about?

Your quirkiness is infectious. I love the off the wall song reviews. Falling in reverse and SOAD are always great reactions from you.
"Lies from the tablecloth" refers to Reagan style trickle-down-economics aka "Crumbs from the tablecloth"
I love that stupidity. They hate social security and social support but they say "hey don't worry, some of the wealth of rich is gonna reach to you... Eventually"(if u or ur children don't die first)

Someone else commented that they used to have parties to watch a bomb testing s back in the day
This song was written when the War in Iraq was in full swing, and it's about the American propaganda behind it. "Everybody's going to the party have a real good time/Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine."
