      Most reactions don't acknowledge the tone change is the for a meaning. Cemetery gates for example, the structure feels like a balance of sadness and anger of loss, but no one digs that deep usually.

We were listening to a lot of Queensryche, Stones, Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Tool, and the list goes on. Rwanda, Samolia, Romania, Poland, Germany, Russia, Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, Columbia, Brazil, Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Syria, Israel, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and a bunch of other places I can’t mention.

    "Breaking into Ft Knox, stealing our intentions" references how much money goes to the military-industrial complex, instead of going towards any other priorities people might have. Ft Knox famously held gold reserves when the dollar was still pegged to a gold exchange rate.

      The POTUS is supposed to be at the back, giving orders. The US military is completely voluntary unless there’s a national emergency and a draft is enacted. The poor have the opportunity to enlist for a free education and training. As such, asking why do they always send the poor is a monumentally ignorant question. The answer is extremely obvious to anyone that bothers to take the time to read.

    One of my favorite lyrics from all of System of a Down's entire catalogue is *"You* depend on *our* protection, yet you feed us *lies* from the tablecloth"
    My interpretation is that this is said from the point of view of a low-ranking soldier on the ground in the Middle East, and he's juxtaposing politicians' insistence that Americans are fighting in the Middle East to protect America from terrorism while simultaneously lying about how well the war is going. And doing it in such a condescending way, as if the soldiers are nothing but dogs and you're feeding them table scraps, but even the table scraps you give them are lies.
    "You politicians say that we soldiers are here fighting and dying to protect our homeland, yet you lie about the war to the American people, and to us. You tell us everything is going well, that we're winning. From where I'm standing, it doesn't look like we're winning. I watched two of my brothers die yesterday, and I don't even know what we're trying to accomplish here, and neither does my commander, or his commander, or his commander's commander. Are we not human to you? Do we not deserve the truth? Tell us why so many of us are fighting and dying in these wars."
    Edit: grammar

      I'd also argue that, like any other genre, rap can be just as informative or rooted in history. Personally, as a white person, I don't know if I would know about the Tulsa massacre or Black Wall Street were it not for hearing about it in a rap song years ago.
      EDIT: I guess a better way to say it would be that rap has informed me of a lot of Black history that isn't really taught to us in school (at least, wasn't to me or my classmates).

When I was a kid, rock was all hair bands and nihilism. The only music I ever heard with anything deep or educational to say was stuff like Public Enemy and KRS-One. Pretty much until Rage Against The Machine came along. And Rage might be a metal band or whatever, but Zack totally spits from a rap tradition so in that regard I think they’re vocally a lot closer to Public Enemy than System Of A Down. I had to stop when you started rationalizing towards the end. SoaD’s music is very politically charged and is all about questioning authority and putting accountability on the powers that be. It’s not about making people understand and accept why the government does what it does, but rather making them aware of it and fighting against it when necessary. They want people to start thinking for themselves and not relying on the lies they’re being fed.

    • @zoegartham312
      @zoegartham312 2 роки тому +25

      I totally agree. I could barely stand to listen to the end of the video after the entire musical part had been incredible and one of the best reactions I've seen. B.Y.O.B. is an incredibly deep song. Why DO they always send the poor? It's a comment about the recruiting process of the US Military. If you have enough money or are in college for an education, you have a great deal more freedom to choose if you wish to serve your country or not. Those who are uneducated, who are poor, who can't afford to go to college on their own; they are the ones who benefit most from incentives like "go overseas for 4 to 6 years, and the government will pay for college when you return."
      It is, unfortunately, also "designer racism," by which I mean that, like most everything else in this country, it will affect people of color and ethnic minorities far more often and deeply than it will whites. With how deeply these systemic problems are ingrained in our society, and the observed lack of willingness by the government to actively try and stop racism and in some places even supporting it - such as the way Republicans got the voting rights changed in (I believe) Georgia to make it harder for certain groups of people to vote under the pretext of making it easier for other groups to vote - I can only conclude that this is done by design rather than by chance, and thus is designer racism.

    They feel the poor generally are easier to manipulate. So they tell us what they think we need and want to hear, and send all the regular joes off to do their dirty work. Hypnotize and Mesmerize is one of my favorite all time dual albums to come out. Both were huge protest pieces demanding accountability from the government for their actions in a time when a lot of people were brainwashed by public sentiment and rumormongering from the gov't to keep people from questioning and docile while still offering sons and daughters to fight. I agree with dad, there are leaders and there are foot soldiers, but IMO the point being made was that nothing happening was enough to send Americans out to die/ be wounded, permanent mental and physical health issues for.
