  • In this video, I react for the first time to System Of A Down performing “B.Y.O.B.”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. System Of A Down keep mesmerizing me with their composition, plus Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian form an astonishing vocal duo!

    I am an old man.... and recently found this band and Korn... happy to say, I am living my best life with the best music I have ever heard..... SOTD may be the greatest band I have ever heard.... each song is special, magical.... my god.... the lyrics, the voices, the instrumentation.......perfect....

    Considering how progressive this song is, I find it so cool that it won a grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006.

      Awards are usually so out of touch, but in this case I think that the best (mainstream) act putting out one of their best songs that was directly speaking about war for cash as we were experiencing at the time was a perfect storm that made the most deserving actually win for once

    • @jxstified7558
      @jxstified7558 3 місяці тому +1

      Its crazy now that it isnt progressive though considering progressives have become the ones pro war.

      @@jasonGamesMaster if you think the war in Iraq was "for cash" you will believe anything without evidence as long as it conforms to ideology.
      arguably stupid war, but stupid does not imply those motives.

      @@jedinxf7 lol. That's right. That was the only time in the last 80 years that the military industrial complex wasn't involved. I totally forgot. All the senators and representatives who own stocks in the companies than make the weapons suddenly left office for awhile, because they had to many morals to stuff their own pockets at the expense of the soldiers whose lives they ruined for no other reason. My bad. I had Iraq confused with all the other pointless wars we've been engaged in since WWII. Thanks for reminding me.

    I really loved SOAD, when they were around and it makes me sad that they're not any longer. At some point they said, that they stopped making music as SOAD because they became disillusioned that nothing changed - which hits even harder when you realize that their messages are still needed and relevant today. It's hard, not to despair.

      Humans have always been going to war. The scale has changed, and the technology... but ultimately, it's all for the same reason as it ever was. "They have stuff, we want stuff." Great reaction and commentary. And I agree, such an inspirational band. I think their secret is just simply trying to wrap up a message within an authentic mood and always trying to serve the song even if they don't know where it is going to take them, but to keep the mood and initial intention alive until it is done. SOAD also have a RHCP level of crazy that charges everything thing they do with a bucket load of charisma. Love them. Thank you for your video.

      Your comment reminded me of Band on the Run (Paul McCartney and Wings) which was a song amalgomated from a few unfinished works. Your musical analysis gives us all a moment to stop and really think about not just the technicalities of a musical composition, but the message and emotion that the artists are trying to convey through lyrics and imagery. I was as excited as you shushing my friend. When I got home I downloaded it and learned it on the guitar. The next weekend I went to buy the CD. "They're very brave, politically" is an apt statement. Serj published an essay on SOAD's website about US foreign policy and how it is failing because it is so based on oil price as the main objective and how the policies have failed to rein in extremism in the middle-east and posited "Terror is not a spontaneous human action without credence. People just dont hijack planes and commit harikari (suicide) without any weight of thought to the action. No one in the media seems to ask WHY DID THESE PEOPLE DO THIS HORRIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION?" He posted this essay two days after 9/11 attacks. Their record label took it down claiming that Serj was trying to justify terrorism. At that time just asking "why" was actually brave due to the massive amount of flag waving and, understandable anger.

    2 observations of a video you posted 2 months ago. So fun!!! And actually a valid analysis from someone who has a qualified perspective. (Slang) Imma check out some of your others, but you already got a sub from this guy. Again, your cuts are awesome and SOOOOOO fun!!

    So many SOAD songs that are worth listening to. So many... Make a point to listen to the album Toxicity from start to finish sometime. It was clearly put together to be listened to as "an album", something that doesn't get done too much anymore given how music is consumed.
    Discovered your channel last night, got a follower. Loving your videos. Keep them coming.

      I think of THIS album the same way. Even the songs that (arguably) aren't "as good" are still awesome and the album works well as a whole. The segues kick ass.

      @@Mertztillithurts I use to like this album a lot more than I do (when it came out, specifically - i got INTO system because of this album). Really all of their albums are well constructed. Its an art I miss with the way we consume music now. Not that it's better or worse, just different.

      @@MrAndersonmmMr. Moral and The Big Steppers a rap album by Kendrick Lamar is built as a progressive narrative and wooow is it good if you like West Coast conscious rap then it's phenomenal. The individual songs are bangers too.

    This is the best reaction I've seen yet to BYOB. You're the first person I've seen that "gets it". 👍🤘
