G Scale Train Newqida LGB 6 Month Chernobyl Urban Decay Effects

  • Back in Spring 2012 I set up an impressive and very inexpensive garden railway by Newquida which is a made in China LGB clone. It's now 6 months on and I need to pull up the railway, but before it's gone lets see how it survived a very hot and wet Australian summer. Was the train tracks affected by outdoor exposure?
WARNING, do not attempt the train crashes you see in this video with a multi thousand dollar LGB G scale train.
Original video showing how the cheap garden railway was built is here. • Cheap G Scale Train Sy...
The first Black Canyon Express G scale train which broke down was used as a push around on the garden railway for a few weeks. I later purchased another of these train sets.
The 6 months of decay on my backyard railway reminded me of Chernobyl and the amazing ghost town of Pripyat which is a deserted city next to the nuclear power plant explosion disaster site inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Have I created a miniature version of long term urban decay in G scale in 6 months ?

I learned a ton with this cheap G scale train. it certainly gave me a taste for this large scale and the problems it presents. It's the sort of scale where I think you just have to go hard and spend some money, doing it by half will only leave you empty. Once you touch G scale it really makes the smaller scales seem like toys.

It was funny, the bulk of the overgrowth happened in the last few months, it was pretty clean around Christmas time from memory. But I do love the look of the very changed world, so much more character.

The videos I love on youtube are the ones showing Chernobyl and the close town of Pripyat. It's a mecca for the study of urban decay. I was surprised how fast the run down look happened to my simple garden railway, mind you we had a ton of Summer rain

  • @kkehoe5
    @kkehoe5 11 років тому +4

The overgrowth looks really cool. Reminds me of the old Navy base I work at where the housing has been vacant since '94 and there are trees growing through the houses. Would make a very convincing post apocalyptic neighborhood.

    (Continued)
The track i can best recommend has plastic ties/sleepers and brass or stainless steel rails and Fish plates/Rail joiners.(TOTALLY ROBUST)
Pull away the overgrowth(should have said this earlier)
Set up away from mature/taller than scale trees
back to roadbed, Crushed stones work well and I recommend putting them in a 5-6 inch wide and 3 inch deep trench

Not exactly on the subject of trains but if you sometimes experience temperatures over 100 degrees F, you might benefit from a trick my grandparents used back when hardly anyone in the U.S. had "air conditioning" (heat pumps). My grandfather was a farmer. When he and his hired man came to the house for lunch, if the temp was 100 degrees or more, they ate lunch, then filled a large tub with water, put bed sheets in it, wrung only part of the water out of the sheets and laid or sat around with the wet sheets on them and didn't go back out to the fields until the temperature dropped below 100 degrees. I'm sure that method saved many people from heat stroke.

Considering the problem areas I had in the track layout it really needs to be done again. If and when I do lay the tracks I will have a very different method and steer clear of earth mounds which just get washed away.

I think 2013 should be renamed the year of ending :P I think for your very first model railway it was a very good attempt. Also I think for a el-cheapo model train the track survived outdoor very well. I've had a similar style of track that hardly survived in the garden shed! It will be interesting to see what changes you make should you re-build it.

as the owner of a Garden Railway I can give you some tips on the type of railway
Set up in a place where you feel it's right at home, even if it'll be temporary
    Remember to watch for overgrowth
Make sure you roadbed and track is tough for the weather, and unable to be washed away.
Your rail equipment must resist the outdoor condition and work like the real thing, I.E. able to go through some plants(they can't be so light)
(To be continued, 100 character limit)

As somebody that's trying to get into this I found your experiment very interesting. One of the biggest costs I've seen with these sorts of setups is the track. I often wondered why people didn't just use all plastic track (which you can find for a song).
No offense, but all of your issues seem to spurn from installing the track improperly. It needs to be elevated to drain, on a stable base, pinned down, ect. So it leads me to believe that a person COULD get away with an all plastic track!
