  • Let's rivet count the Great British Locomotive Collection issues 1 to 10. This OO gauge authentic looking steam and diesel trains explores the most amazing locomotives used in Britain. Examine the amazing pioneers of the early 19th Century machine age and the development of the steam locomotive, through to the present day diesel and electric machines that replaced them. The Great British Locomotives magazine brings an exciting series of collectable highly detailed models. Each 4mm scale 'OO' model comes with its own dedicated magazine, packed with history and facts about the most amazing locomotives ever built. Collect them all to build a superb encyclopaedia examining the history of the evolution of Britain's railway locomotives. Impress your mother, impress your girlfriend but most importantly impress yourself. Just be very careful if you can afford such an extensive collection of beautiful model trains. Finding out all the facts to how many is in this collection and total cost of collecting is not that easy to find. I wonder why?
    To get an insight into how the transition to Diesel and Electric trains halted the steam era keep reading on. 1968 was a decisive year of change for British Railways.
    The steam locomotives of British Railways were used by British Railways over the period 1948-1968. The vast majority of these were inherited from its four constituent companies, the "Big Four".
    In addition, BR built 2537 steam locomotives in the period 1948-1960, 1538 to pre-nationalisation designs and 999 to its own standard designs. These locomotives had short working lives, some as little as five years, because of the decision to end the use of steam traction by 1968, against a design life of over 30 years and a theoretical final withdrawal date of between 1990 and 2000.

    I remember seeing theses models in the shops. I've seen people use them to fill the background up, less expensive way to make your loco shed look busy or good as scrap models.

    I like some of these models, I found the Deltic fairly impressive for it's cost, and I could imagine myself fitting a motor bogie in there.
    Also, the surviving K1 is named 'The Great Marquess', a name so long that doesn't really fit on the smokebox!

    That "battering ram" is actually called an Archimedes Screw that carried the coal to the firebox so the fireman would not have to shovel the coal into the firebox. Most American Articulated steam locomotives came with this feature. Some steam locomotives that had the Archimedes Screw in the tender were the Big Boy, Y6B, Challenger, A Class, EM-1, etc.

    Deltics are not used anymore on Britons railways anymore but quite a few are in preservation including that one you have got in the model but deltics still pull their way on preserved lines and even a few can go on the mainline and run rail tours and some even get lucky and freight company's hire them due to shortages off locos and you could see them pulling a freight train but I believe the last deltic to be hired by a freight company was 2012.

    Very nice static models of British locos. Produced in VR China for Amercom, a Polish company. Issued in UK and Australia. The series ended with number 41. Prizes are cheap in GBP and Australian Dollars. As a German I love British locos and have many of them but not yet all. They were offered often on eBay from UK and Polish sellers. Several of them you are able to convert to running models with used chassis and motors from Lima and Hornby.

    The Evening Star 9F 2-10-0 was of a class of 250 built between 1954 and 1960,numbered 92000 to 92250. Evening Star was the last of them to be built. It was built in 1960 and was the last steam locomotive built in Britain. It was numbered 92220. This is because they were built in batches at several different works. 92250, although the last of the class numerically, was finished several months before 92220.

    the front bogey is called "pilot wheels" they're used to lead the train through the curves so that the drive wheels don't derail. as for the back set, they're called "trailing wheels" they're used to hold up the cab and the firebox

    • @InkblotHyena
      @InkblotHyena 9 років тому

      leokimvideo Ponies were a nickname given to American locomotives in the Western US. Most were 4-4-0, meaning they had four pilot wheels on the bogey, and four driving wheels. Due to the four wheels, and the fact they lead the drive wheels, they were nicknamed ponies. Well, at least that's what I've read.

  • @Damocles178

    They are pretty good models but they are quite fragile and really are best kept on their bases unless of course you have a model display cabinet. I actually keep some of mine in there in conjunction with some of my functional hornby models. Interestingly Coronations Tender wheels actually rotate which is very unusual for what is meant to be a static model. One thing I think about in relation to the death of steam is despite the fond memories at the time British Railways would've held steam with little more regard than the diesels of today. They were just seen as something to get people from A to B; only for the efforts of people wanting to keep the memories alive we wouldn't really have any. The lucky preserved engines have certainly enjoyed a higher elevated status as people are in awe of them.

    • @Damocles178
      @Damocles178 8 років тому

      *BTW on the subject of the corridor tender. The main reason the Flying Scotsman service utilised that was so that crews could swap without the need to stop the train as they really wanted to emphasise a non-stop service.

    Hi Leo, nice video as always, the issues in the UK have now gone up to 37! So we will have to see what happens, sadly there was only really one scrap yard that called Barry's that would sell the locos to preservation groups and BR wouldn't really tell you where the locos went! The UK is very big for steam now, we are even building new ones of the classes of locos which were lost! I have started one myself! You will have to come over to the UK I would show you some amazing British locos! By the way the infomation and model of the K3 and K4 are different so the infomation sounds like it is from the K4 and the model is a K3 they are different locos!

    • @leokimvideo
      @leokimvideo  9 років тому

      bertiethebusfan14 Both are overpriced I feel. The Playrail is more of a rip off considering it's near impossible to get engine characters out of those set up crook machines. I have a very delayed video where I pull 100 Thomas Playrail capsules and the breakdown of what I get for $200 will make many people cry. Now how about the 70 ships to collect all the Star Trek stuff at $20 a pop, is that one a waste of money as well? I did also collect Giant War Planes up to issue 10, and it's a very curious collection of collectables. In all these collections the total number of the collection is well hidden away..and again I need to ask WHY?

    British Railways cut up the steam engines because in WWII, sparks from funnel and firebox could ignite gunpowder. Coal became a valuable resource, and was rather expensive. Diesels used oil, and were easier to start up. Steam engines took a long time to get ready. Oil is cheaper than coal, and they had no metal to make them, so they cut up the ste

    Awesome video! To be honest I wouldn't buy the whole collection because I never really was interested in the real models unless they came out in Thomas and Friends form. I mean I like how they all have very interesting back story's and have amazing detailing's but that's really it.

    I think the lack of detail on some of the models has to do with the real locomotives themselves. Some of the locomotives never had the glitz and glam as engines such as "City of Truo". The black ones (I forgot the classes:)) were built during the world wars, and were built for work rather than looking nice.

    Schools class as one of my favourite locomotives, gotta say that model is terrificly bad. the boiler is plasticy, the running gear looks off, the general detailing isn't great and lots of mold lines visible. Given the AUS$20 price tag (~£12) compared to say a Hornby schools (£96 for a railroad model, or £149-160 for full detail) it's not that bad if you're willing to put some work into improveing the looks (paint job mostly!) though that might be hard given the fragility, and of course the end result is a stationary model.
    OR for the same price (£12) you can get a Dapol schools class kit, which gives a much better base for kit-bashing improvements and motorisation.
