Who Crashed Duck At St Lukes Model Train Show ?

  • St Lukes model train club celebrated 26 years, here is my coverage of the layouts with my son enjoying the model trains along the way.
    The highlight for me was the Hornby Live Steam trains, which are a range of steam powered locomotives that operate using real steam. They are controlled via a separate power controller which is incompatible with existing controllers. The Live Steam locomotive must be run in isolation from other DCC or DC engines.
    It is impressive technology but sadly these sorts of trains are no longer available. Possibly the very high cost killed off Hornby Live Steam or the sheer novelty factor. It's amazing to think that steam technology can be miniaturized because of the problems which happen when trying to scale down anything to do with water.
    The large TOMY drive through mega Thomas is something I would love for my ever expanding Thomas Tank collection.
    I feel the best display this year was the LEGO trains which had the fire in the LEGO police station. Doing that simple special effects show really pleased the audience and children at the train show.
    Yep my son crashed Duck on a HO U-Drive layout....it's a very sensitive subject.

    I did a fair bit of reading up on the model train forums about Hornby Live Steam, and yes I did read performing repairs was difficult, getting spare parts was sometimes near impossible. It also seems that they are very difficult to control and run and required a dedicated area in a layout to be any sort of success.

    The Hornby Live Steam stuff was amazing, so sad Hornby stopped making these sorts of model trains.

    Thanks for your thoughts about the Hornby Live Steam Mallard, it's such an unusual bit of gear I think thats one of the real draw cards of it.
    I have been watching the prices on the Hornby Live Steam Rocket, and thats also been interesting.

    The stars of the show were the N scale layouts, last year there was not much N scale but this year it was everywhere. All of the N scale layouts showed the tiny scale a it's detailed best and it was mighty impressive.

    Neat video, Leo. I was surprised to find that customised Rusty the Diesel on that truck at 3:34. They really did a nice job of converting it into a heap of scrap to take to the junkyard. Though at 3:40 in reality I think it would be very dangerous to sandwich an explosives van between two loaded trucks like that; empty conflats would provide a safer distance between the truck, engine and cargo. Loved seeing the Lego layouts; that was a nice touch, neat special effects for the fire

    If you were ever thinking about getting the live steam A4, live steam stuff do need a lot of care and attention, as they do need water and i read somewhere it needs a bit of coal to, but i guess that would be in the box.
    Also it was nice to see a bit of English stuff there, in the mix. I didn't think anything like that was sold over there.
    Another great video, keep up the good work

    You know there are quite a few people saying to snap up the Mallard Live Steam which is still mint in box. I have a hunch these Hornby live steam trains will become highly sort after in years to come due to the problems which have occurred with this line of model trains.
    I just need to get my head around how many did Hornby produce.

  • @leokimvideo
    @leokimvideo  11 років тому

    I think getting a Hornby Mallard Live Steam mint in box is possibly worth getting only because of the problems Live Steam has had, I'm pretty sure it will become fairly sort after in future years, especially if it's all mint in box.

    Interesting to see quite a few US layouts. And seemingly, quite a few American model trains are sold in Australia. But then again, many Australian locomotives are direct descendants from US locomotives or have similar designs. But sometimes it seems more foreign model trains like US and UK locomotives are being sold in Australian hobby shops rather than Australian locomotives. Nice Video.

    On the Live Steam front: if this is discontinued, might be an idea to snatch it up while you can. $1000 is a lot, I admit. But for a future collectable, it seems pretty uncanny

    There was one store locally that used to carry hornby stuff. That was Allied Model trains in Culver city. when they downsized all of the exotic stuff went as well. I really miss the hornby models and it is too bad they couldnt figure how to get live steam on a DCC setup. In g scale however Live steam is alive and well...

    thats intresting because here in Britian most models are of a British type and every now and then an over seas one, it is very few models shops in Britian which sell overseas models so its intresting to that forgin models in Oz are easier to get hold of.

  • @leokimvideo
    @leokimvideo  11 років тому

    as yet no one else has done it....Hornby cracked the miniature live steam but dropped it after a short time....it's impressive technology and possibly well worth the price

  • @leokimvideo
    @leokimvideo  11 років тому

    Because Hornby has had such a huge influence on the hobby here the English aspect is always going to be strong. Also considering that England has so much rail heritage and history to call on it's always going to be a modelers delight. To pull off Oz themes and rolling stock is all custom stuff and mighty expensive.
    Literally every boy growing up in Oz had a Hornby train set at some point, not sure about today though.

  • @leokimvideo
    @leokimvideo  11 років тому

    No, the display of red rattlers was not there this year...in fact there were many layouts missing compared to last year. In the void some new layouts appeared.
    I really wanted to see that Hornby O gauge train set again it was a killer last year, sadly it was not there. Those old train sets have a magic about them that the new stuff can't compete with.
    The best layouts were the N gauge, I'm sort of hooked on these small scale trains now and when it's done right it looks mighty impressive

  • @ZagreusProductions
    @ZagreusProductions 11 років тому

    Very nice video. i really like Hornby and Bachmann and actual have my own OO layout. speaking as a collector, i would say that the Mallard is very good value, as it is discontinued, plus its live steam. im sure it will turn up again somewhere but for more than a thousand. anyway, i am quite jealous that you can go to things like that. i live in the country so its hard to get to places like that. its up to you whether you buy it or not. anyway, keep the cool videos coming!
