- Marvel Comics have a long history of publishing What Ifs. Comics that ask the question what if events had turned out different for the heroes or villains of the 616 universe. One superhero who features prominently is Spider-Man. From starring alongside the Fantastic Four in the first ever What If the wall crawler has had many parallel universe adventures. That should be the premise for every What If!
- What if Gwen Stacy had lived... because the Goblin was eaten by sharks!
- What if the Punisher's family survived... because the gangsters got eaten by sharks!
- What if the X-Men lost Inferno... because they all got eaten by sharks!
It would be so much better if it was the exact same story, but with that title.

I picked this issue up back in the 1990s: Spidey was really a jerk for a lot of it, unfortunately. Even as a teenager I was confused by how he considered himself disabled. He has four fully functional extra arms, that doesn't count as a disability in my opinion.
It's an advantage. How many times would functional extra arms not come in handy?
When you're trying to have a secret identity, it's a major disability...

Imagine spiderman crying about his disability of having 2 extra pairs of arms, and superpowers, to a paraplegic...... oh wait! LOL
Its a bit weird, the story uses terms like "cripled" or disabled but really its talking about being a outcast to society. "A sideshow freak". Hence why Spidey gets his inspiration to make the most of it from th X-Men. But insead of making the analogy work with Spidey becoming a simbol for the minorities, you know like the mutants, they focus on the disabled and the whole thing falls flat. But i can apreciate the intention, even in the way they developed it isnt very clever.
This situation is a consequence of his Spidey Sense, which forewarns him of danger, and as we all know, Forewarned is Four(Extra)Armed ... I'll get my coat ...

This is why I mildly resists Tom Holand's take on the character. He makes Peter sound like such a soft boy when he was angstiest little sh*t I have ever read. Always moody and always dramatic.

I still want to know how this would actually work on the human skeleton. There's a reason we only have two arms.
It would also entail enormous rearrangement of his internal organs, affecting his lungs and kidneys, for example.
Imagine when HIS arms go to sleep ...or charley horses ...or hitting those funny bones! But, seriously, with the rearranged physiology he would have to have constant muscle spasms!

Not a Spider-Man What If but one of my favorites was Issue 66, "What If...Rogue Possessed the Power of Thor?" And it was another one where everything worked out alright in the end (other than dead Avengers).

People loose arms all the time I'm sure it's not outside the realm of possibility for The Marvel Universe to just cut them off.

There's always a lot of willing suspension of disbelief in superhero comics but I think Parker wearing sheathes to make his extra arms invisible and that actually working might be overdoing it.
I already said my favorite was Spider-Girl's first introduction, can't go wrong with what if YOU became Spider-Man... You can't, because you'll die says Marvel, what a troll!
Spider-Man, I have four extra arms, I'll handle it, by not actually handling it! Honestly surprised it never ended up with him further mutations into the Man-Spider, like "Guess this is my life now, rawr!"

The one where The Scarlet Spider killed Spider-Man. Spider-Ham would look good on a watch. I am now wondering what would be the rules of vampire sharks, and how long would it take for Namor to get involved and blame the surface world for the undead sealife ravaging his kingdom.

What if this "What If??" really was written by spectral interns that the House of Ideas summoned from some infernal dimension and that's why it feels so different?

I haven’t read this issue, so I don’t know if this was covered, but couldn’t he just (as ghastly as it is) have his extra arms amputated? He can probably get ahold of some good surgeons. (Although if they turn out to be hydra-arms and he grows two more for every one they cut off. Or they accidentally amputate the wrong ones and he’s left with the bottom pair, or one from the top and one from the middle or something...)

OH WOW! I remember that! I was 22 years old in 1971 and reading it off the shelfs! There use to be places in NYC you could buy comics from magazine & newspaper stands! And the Six-Armed Spidey was A MIND BLOWER!
This was one of the first comics I ever owned. It came included in a Toys R Us comic pack! :)
My favorite Spidey "What - If?" is "What if Spider-man had Kept His [Captain Universe] Cosmic Powers?" Very cool Spidey costume and shocking introduction to the fact that Peter was Captain Universe for a short time. :D
Love how you make that "But why though!?" sound like you're at the cemetery with Spider-Man, shouting at them from off-panel.
My favorite What If so far was "What if Captain America wasn't found and remained in the ice?" If you ever wanted to see a fight between Classic Cap and Commie Smasher Cap and the former quote 1984 as he lays the smackdown on the latter, then this is the comic for you.
When this What If was set, Gwen Stacy *hated* Spider-Man. She blamed him for the death of her father. So the idea that Peter could reveal his identity to her (and that he now had 4 extra arms) and continue a relationship with her was not a possibility.
Yes, I know there's a What If where Spidey rescued her at the bridge, revealed his identity to her, and she forgave him for her father's death and wanted to marry him. But considering how erratic and bipolar Gwen had acted in the previous ~40 issues, that is very out of character for her. She would more likely tell Peter that she hated him and never wanted to see him again. Her being very accepting in that What If reads more of the deification of the character of Gwen that had started soon after her death.
8:20 I'd actually argue that Xavier sees Spidey's point here. He's essentially become a mutant who can't hide his "disability" and Charles would know what that's all about. This point gets reinforced later when he slugs it out with Thing.

It would have worked better with Beast, but I don't know If he had Blued himself yet at the time of this comic.

@@user-ManofStyle1 I would guess that most Spidey fans that aren't long-time readers probably know the 6-armed Spidey *more* from the 90s cartoon than the actual comics. That 90s cartoon was incredibly popular at the time (and since), and introduced a lot of people to Spidey and his history.
That cartoon was the first time the symbiote was portrayed as making its host evil. In the comics it didn't do this, it just took Peter out on patrol at night when he was asleep. But every (?) adaptation since then has accepted this "symbiote turns you evil" as part of the origin, so much so that some comics writers have included it in stories assuming that it's true from the original symbiote stories.
@@jhornacek before recent symbiote retcons, I always thought that symbiote didn't necessarily make Peter evil, but rather exhilarate his body and mind, which made him more sensitive and easy to anger, made him more like an animal that feels, rather then human that rationalize.
But idk, i love "Alien Costume" episodes and for me it's a definitive Venom story.
@@user-ManofStyle1 In the original "Alien Costume Sage" ASM issues (#252-259?) the costume could change appearance to any clothes he wanted, and produced its own webbing. But that's it. It didn't affect Peter's personality, intelligence or emotions at all. He just noticed that he was tired all the time because when he was asleep it would take him out on patrol, so he'd wake up in the morning and be tired because "he" had been out webswinging all night.
It's only the 90s cartoon, and subsequent adaptations, that added that it affects the host's emotions, make them evil, etc.
I loved this concept in the *90s Animated series*
Especially Peter's nightmare where he turns into a full on spider but still with his human head and Aunt May flushes him down the bath drain.
Oh Yes! I've been waiting for this episode since the Morbius review. The snark is real in this one. Morbius' fate in this book is hilarious, and Spider-Man's comments to Professor-X was great.
Is Jane Foster's name there seriously "Thordis"?! I always thought "Thora" sounded more natural as a feminine variant...
Late to the show here, but my favorite was What If #4 (vol. 2?), where Spider-Man never lost the alien costume. (It was written pre-Venom, hence the "alien costume" nomenclature.) It was a sad tale for Peter, Black Cat, and pretty much anyone associated with Spidey in some way.
My fave Spidey What If was when he became a movie star/producer.
Hires Daredevil as a bodyguard. As DD is close to death at the hands of the Sinister Six he realizes he made a mistake and becomes the hero he was always meant to be!
The only bad part about this is that without Peter getting hitched (be it MJ or Gwen) there's no plausible way for Mephisto to show up with his One More Day deal and gift us with a glorious panel of the happy couple giving him the finger eight times all at once.
"Buzz off, Beelzebub, you've got the wrong Parkers. My Aunt May has been bulletproof since she got the Power Cosmic back in 1984. Galactus let her keep it after she solved that whole "eternal hunger" problem for him, he said she's his best Herald ever. Sends her a card on her birthday every year. Sometimes Norrin comes by our place to mope about it, I think he feels a bit abandoned. So fragile."
The six arm Spider-Man action figure was pretty rad.
Favorite Spidey What-If
The (first) one where Flash Thompson is bitten by the spider and he becomes Spidey with Peter as his secret tech guy. Flash becomes corrupted by the power, becoming a criminal. He decides to take out Peter so nobody knows his secrets. Peter ends up going to the FF for help. They manage to take Thompson down and Reed Richards is able to extract his powers into a formula. Peter is all excited, thinking Reed's going to give him the formula and he'll have powers. Instead, Reed dumps it down the drain. He then makes Peter his apprentice and the newest member of the Fantastic Five, using his own genius to create gadgets that help him fight crime.
My first thought was it should be the watcher on the watch. Or the tva logo or miss minutes.
The 90s cartoon brought back 6 armed Spiderman in a crossover as well. The 90s cartoon also had the main Peter Parker visit Xavier when he grew his extra arms.
My favorite Spider-man related What If was probably the 2 parter 'Didn't Marry Mary Jane' and 'Married Black Cat'.
Felicia Hardy was Peter' squeeze when I got in to comics. So like Wally West is my Flash; Black Cat is my Spider-man arm candy.
I liked how she was so bad luck for Parker and this was a moment of ultimate bad luck when she accidently revealed Spidey's identity when being catty towards Mary Jane.
Black Cat didn't intentionally reveal Peter's identity to Mary Jane. Peter was arguing with MJ (who had just told him that she knew he was Spider-Man) when Black Cat came in through the window. Felicia didn't know MJ was there.
And we found out in the next (?) issue that MJ knew he was Spidey from all the way back in Amazing Fantasy #15.

Mind you probably been 20 years or more since last read the issues in question but I recall a 'cat'alyst for the person who figured out Spider-man's ID and was selling it to his villains was Hardy meeting up with Mary Jane.
Which I in turn chalked up to Black Cat's bad luck powers, she had at the time, that played havoc with Parker here and there. These powers inadvertent effect were a fun dynamic besides the hero dating a villain and Felicia being more interested in Spider-man than Peter.
This complicated relationship is one of the reasons I even having a passing memory of this 'what if' moment.
@@briteskin I don't remember any villain finding out Spidey's identity from Black Cat meeting up with MJ, so I'm not sure which villain you're talking about. Venom knew his identity from the symbiote. Norman knew it from following Spidey in ASM #39. Harry knew it from living with Peter and finding his costume. Norman told Peter's secret identity to Vulture in Marvel Knights Spider-Man as part of a contingency plan (if Norman went to jail then Vulture was told his secret).
There have been other villains that have found out Spidey was Peter (he *did* reveal his identity to the world in Civil War), but I don't remember anyone finding out by seeing that BC was talking to MJ.
As far as BC's bad luck powers, she lost and gained them so many times it's hard to keep track when she had them in her interactions with Spidey.

My first Spidey What If was Captain Universe. Loved his design, and how he does stuff like turns Hobgoblin into a Peter Parker looking guy.
As you were describing this issue I thought it was leading to Peter being Spider-Man full time, like how everyone knows Reed is Mr. Fantastic everyone ends up knowing Peter is Spidey. Like Captain America his identity is just public. I imagined Peter walking down the street with his six arms. Saving the day as Spider-Man, dating a hero like an X-Man. He fully embraces his arms and becomes a celebrity hero. Now I want to see that What If... or see 6-armed Peter in Spiderverse 2. and it be what I said.
@10:00 - As a native New Yorker, yes, 4 extra arms that work is too weird, even for here.
That said, we'd adjust quickly and the weirdness would fade by the end of the week.

Mephisto appearing in that splash page was very random, since this comic came out in 1992, 10 years before he would appear in One More Day. At this time Mephisto was not a Spidey villain.
The only (?) time Mephisto appears in a Spidey comics before OMD was an Amazing Spider-Man issue (Secret Wars II tie-in), but he never interacts with Spidey - he spends the whole issue talking with the Beyonder.
Ok... Usually, the way it goes, is that comics characters get into crazy situations that end up being fixed by some pseudo science that doesn't exist in real life. Am I the only one who feels like this situation would be easily fixable with real science? I mean, I'm not a doctor but removing limbs feels like a very doable surgery, if a little expensive.

A Thing watch should have a rocky orange band; the Nightcrawler watch should have a fuzzy blue band; and the Colossus watch...would just be pretty indistinguishable from a regular metal band, I guess...
issue #28 - "Captain America Were Not the Only Super Soldier in World War II?" is the most interesting and my favorite what if story

The greatest case of a What If universe working out better than the regular was one based on the first Civil War.
Instead of sucker-punching Cap, which set off the war in the main Marvel universe, Tony Stark meets him with actual sincerity in sorting out the issue. Cap points out that many of the heroes don't trust any agent of the government with their secret identity and that no one person would be trusted by all the heroes. Tony immediately realizes that cap is 99.9% right, but that the ONLY person they'd all trust is Cap himself.
Cap becomes the ID keeper to all the heroes. Because the war never breaks out, the 50-state initiative includes nearly all heroes. It ends up a resounding success, leading to world peace.

Also, if I had to pick a favorite Marvel: What if so far, it would have to be "What if Gwen Stacey Lived." It just leads to so many possibilities that are worth exploring.

I'm still amazed by how he manages to hide 4 arms. even if you can't see them, what hides the bulk under the shirt? or the holes on the shirt so his extra arms protude.
by the way, since people now acknowledged and respected spiderman, he could show that he's peter parker and have a "regular" life (including a girlfriend and a proper job). it's highly probable that the fantastic four, the x-men and the avengers would also support his decision and help him.

The Thing Clobbering Time thing already exists though it would be hard to get, since they came out in the 70s. I regret not buying it when a local comic that had one went out of business. Given the amount of money I had it was the clock or The Groo Bizarre and The Groo Carnival.

Your Watcher voice is on point Sasha and aside from the humor issues this was one of the rare What If? that at least tried for a positive ending. For me at least, it worked- Six Arm Spidey needs to be in the next Into the Spiderverse movie.
My favorite Spidey What if... is What if the Clone Survived :) The resolution is amazingly goofy
My Disliz submission was for a design of Daredevil vs. the Kingpin, I saw that they have many watches where the design goes across the whole piece and I think having two characters with such a timeless (intentional pun) rivalry could look awesome like that! I cited John Romita Jr.'s Daredevil design specifically out of a real love for his take on the man without fear.
This reminds me of spiderman 90 TV show with many spiderman episodes
