    ***Correction Beer Testing***
    Hello everybody,
in this video i am restoring an old train lantern from the former gdr or east germany. A good friend of mine asked me to restore the train lantern for her father, who used it with his friends over 50 years ago as a light source when he celebrated and relaxed with his boys. The lantern will be restored for his 73rd birthday, then he can finally enjoy the lamp again with his three daughters and friends.
The lantern was manufactured by VEB Ueckermünde in 1967 in the German democratic republic. Funnily enough, the train lantern was produced by the ship lantern factory located there.
Before the introduction of overhead lines, which supplied the trains with electricity, train tail lights marked the end of the train or the end of a wagon. Lamps of the same design had already been manufactured and used in all German train traffic since the 1920s. In the original state, these lamps were operated with petroleum burners. The present example, however, was equipped with an electric bulb more than 50 years ago.
The video of the restoration documents all phases of the diy project. Starting with the disassembly to the assembly of the finished parts.
A restoration project that took me much more effort than I had originally anticipated.
Already during disassembly I realized that this mass product was not intended for disassembly. Rivets were used instead of screws. Hinges were mounted and then painted over and many of the metal joints were spot welded.
After I had done my best to disassemble the lamp into its individual parts, I could begin the actual restoration work.
First, all parts were sandblasted. I used corundum or glass beads as blasting medium.
Glass beads are used when only a little abrasion is desired. Since I wanted to preserve the enameled lampshades, they were sandblasted with glass beads.
After blasting I started with the metal work. With body tin I soldered cracks and deep dents. Then, after a primer coat, filler could be used to even out the last uneven areas and to create a good base for the paint.
I then painted the lantern in three colors with water based paint and sealed the whole thing with 2 component clear coat.
I then polished the paint with car polishing compound in grades 1000, 2500 and 3800.
After I finished the painting I could straighten all small and connecting parts, grind them, nickel plating them and finally polish them.
Afterwards I had to ask myself how to cut glass, because a non-original red acrylic glass was replaced by a real red glass.
I was also able to find an original petroleum burner and thus restore the lantern to its original condition. If you want to know what john wick has to do with this part you better watch the video :)
The work was rewarded this time with a "Stiegl - Goldbräu" beer, which did not perform in the test quite as well as I had expected. Nevertheless, a good beer for a day on the mountain or after skiing.
The assembly then worked smoothly and I am very happy with the result in the end. Especially after I was done with testing.
Let me know how you like the project and share the video with friends or family if you had fun.
    Stay healthy

Once again, an amazing restoration Dr. Beer...
    Not perfect, you say?
Yes, it is. It is even more than perfect.
All your dedication for the sake of making another human being happy, is simply wonderful.
The result -really- is something to be proud of and the best thing is, you have made someone very happy; more than that I imagine; the lantern must have sentimental value for him. I predict this is the best gift he has had in a long time.
Thanks so much for sharing with us, I was really looking forward to a new project. I really appreciate the trouble and time you are taking with filming and editing the result so meticulously, it is highly appreciated.
The patina, you left with enamel, is really an addition to the project. :-)

My grandfather was a train engineer and worked at the railroad for many years. There is actually an old train lantern mounted outside maybe 20 feet from where I am at this very moment. My grandpa converted it to be an outside light that works with a switch inside. This really makes me wish I could restore it. Not only as an homage to him, but also because the electrics might be old and dangerous. We don't use it much, as it's really just for aesthetics and doesn't provide much light, but it does get occasionally flipped on and it worries me. However, I do still love seeing it work after all these years and love that it reminds me of him.

Sowohl faszinierend, als auch "traurig". Je älter ich werde, desto mehr verbinde ich meine alten Dinge mit Erinnerungen. Care and detail. You will always get a good result when you take your time. Beautiful. Such a care and detailed work. With “oil” became more charming. Hope her father enjoys the “new” gift.

I just realized, I’m older than the lamp! If I get a restoration too, can I come out as fantastic as the lamp? I’m in awe at your talent.

That was just beautiful 😍! I'm glad you lit it! I also cringed on when you tried to pop the spot weld. I was waiting for the glass to break with my breath held. I would have loved to seen the reaction of the customer's father's face ! Just outstanding!
