The pre-disco period of the Bee Gees ran from 1967 to 1974. Songs from that era was "Massachusetts", "I Started a Joke", "To Love Somebody", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Holiday", "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "Run to Me", "Lonely Days", and "World". In 1975 began their disco era when they released the album "Main Course" which featured "Jive Talkin'", "Nights on Broadway" and "Fanny (Be Tender with My Love)".
Yeah, I agree. To be honest I didn't like the 70'sdisco Bee Gees at all. Barry did write some good songs in early 80s for the likes of Barbara and Dolly.
Yep. The falsetto was a novelty starting with Saturday Night Fever but it honestly began to get a bit tedious to me knowing how they sang the older stuff.

The Bee Gees were likely one of the most important music groups of the 60's and 70's. They either played your favorite song, or they wrote it and somebody else played it. This song is one you can only sing for someone who is THE love of your life. I love this song so very much. And yes, I am a romantic, deal with it.
To put into perspective, Barry was 21 years old when he wrote this song, and the Bee Gees recorded. Most people think Bee Gees, and they automatically think Disco, but they had a HUGE library before they re-invented themselves in the late 70s and did their disco era. They are an amazing band and some of the greatest songwriters of our time. When a band is on the same argument as the Beatles as the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, they did something right. Keep reviewing old school Bee Gees songs, it was some of their best work!
It's amazing to see how their talents matured as they developed their song-writing skills over the years. Their Disco years put more layers on what was already a really good ear for melody and harmony with a balance of drama.

This song gives me chills. Thank you for reviewing it. The Gibb brothers were amazing creative geniuses. They wrote and composed beautiful songs and their non-falsetto voices were gorgeous. This song is very pre-disco era. It was released in 1968. It wasn't until the mid 70's (while recording "Nights On Broadway") that Barry realized he could sing falsetto well and it became a signature Bee Gees sound.
I saw them live in Sept. 71 when I was 18. Ohio State basketball arena. Center stage, 4th row. They had a small orchestra with them. The show was even better than I expected. Memorable for sure.
The disco era was truly a blip in the very long career of The Bee Gees. The popularity of that time, however, was truly insane. Many great songs before and after that period- many of which are upbeat and have a groove. But their voices together in love songs is truly angelic. The Only Love is a beautiful song from 1991 with Barry on lead vocals.
Baby brother Andy did a lovely (live) rendition of this song... looking every bit as if he was his older brother Barry's twin - in spite of the 12 year age difference.
I was introduced to the bee gees way before the disco Era and prefer it. Later in life, before the deaths of Maurice and Robin, the bee gees seemed to start to go back to their 60's sound.
Barry always sings this to Linda in every concert. Gorgeous. The footage from the 1979 concert where he dedicates it to Linda and she's shown holding Stephen, their eldest, will melt your heart. Footage is from Spirits having Flown concert. Worth watching because they are at their prime.

If you haven't reacted to "Run to Me" by the Bee Gees yet, that one should be next. It's my favorite of their 1960's pre-disco songs. I prefer all of their non-falsetto songs. Ironically, "Nights on Broadway" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, yet it's one of the first songs they used a falsetto on that I'm aware of.
Other early Bee Gees to check out if you haven’t: I’ve Gotta Get a Message To You, To Love Somebody, I Can’t See Nobody, Lonely Days, Run To Me, First Of May, Don’t Want To Live Inside Myself
“Lonely Days” I would recommend watching the performance videos from the day. They are excellent to give you an idea of what the Bee Gees used to be before disco.
Any song on the Bee Gees 1997 album Still Waters is fantastic. My favorite from it is My Lover's Prayer. I love their Post Disco Era music too! They managed to change with the times!
I think most people who lived through both the pre- and post- disco era prefer the 60’s Bee Gees. Don’t get me wrong. They definitely had some 70s, 80’s, 90’s, and beyond bangers, but the 60‘s era was so heartfelt, and it was such a wonderful time. I believe it was the best decade for music. I especially loved it when Robin sang lead. His voice was so beautiful, it seemed to draw out every emotion I had whenever he would sing. When I hear these same songs today, those same emotions rise up to the top again, even though it has been almost 60 years since I first heard them.. My favorite Bee Gee song is, I Can’t See Nobody. Love you Ro, Mo, and Ba.
The logical next step in your Bee Gees journey is "To Love Somebody". If y'all want to hear a standout vocal from Robin, y'all have to react to "I Started A Joke".
Aside from the many fantastic hit songs the Bee Gees have written and sung, one that stands out for me is "Songbird" off their 1975 Main Course album. It's such a beautiful song. In fact the Main Course album as a whole, to me, is my favorite Bee Gees composition. Be sure to also check out "Edge of the Universe" and "Baby As You Turn Away" from the same album.

This is their BIGGEST HIT from the 1960's. They were a soft rock band then. Bread before Bread.
Much better than Bread.
Such a sweet song, and so classic
I forgot they did this song. Thank you for bringing it back. Love the Bee Gees. Your faithful follower 🎤🎶🎼💜🫶
It couldn't have been anyone else but the Bee Gees!
This is the time frame that created their die-hard fans - disco almost killed their careers - they had to work SO hard when disco died to maintain their relevance. But some of us love every version of them and ALL their music!!!
I love this song! Might even be my favorite Bee Gees song. You should see the video of this with the brothers. It's beautiful. ❤
Best. Bee Gees. Song. Ever.
You really should watch the live version. Barry was simply stunning singing this at the tender age of 21!!!!!! Now you MUST listen to Andy's version he recorded in the 80's.
This is the older Bee Gees music , it was the 60s 👍🏼♥️🙏🏼✝️✌🏼😎
This was legendary Bee Gees before the disco era. Pure voices. You have to listen to their 60’s music.
