Yes it’s a shame that many people when they think of The Bee Gees only know them for their “disco era” music. Don’t get me wrong, they produced some great songs during that time but there are so many gems from the late 6s to early 70s. I Can’t See Nobody is one of my favorites. Other great songs are Got To Get A Message To You, To Love Somebody, First Of May, I Started A Joke.

When people say, The Bee Gees, all they think about is freaking Disco! Few people remember they had a hell of a pop career before that. This song, I started a joke, & many more, my all time favorite is, “To love somebody.” I’m glad y’all turned people on to the pre-disco Bee Gees.

Their first #1 hit in a lot of countries, but not in the U.S.. Kind of ironic considering it was about a U.S. state. Their first U.S. #1 hit came 4 years later, with "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.
But they did have a nice string of top twenty and top ten hits before that in the U.S., starting with "New York Mining Disaster 1941".

Robin Gibb sang, "I Started A Joke". My soulmate, (also named Robin), passed away at the age of 34 in 2001. We dated throughout high school in the early 80s and beyond. He was a hilarious guy!! The day of his funeral I went home deeply saddened when Robin Gibb's song, "I Started A Joke" came on the car radio on my way home. I "knew" that was "my Robin" speaking to me. The lady who had passed away was a huge Bee Gees fan and maybe president of the Missouri fan club (definitely of some Bee Gees fan club) as she had literally hundreds of notebooks of letters, pictures and all kinds of memorabilia dating back to the late 60's. They had Bee Gees music playing in the background. I wanted to buy everything but of course my family would have thought I was crazy. This is the style of music that populated their first Best of The Bee Gees compilation album. They wondered for a few years after this, even a rock song: "Lonely Days, Lonely Nights". Then they moved to the US and were trying to find their sound, then one day they were going over a bridge, with expansion joints, that formed a beat. AND "drive talking" came about which then morphed into their first disco song: "Jive Talking"!! The rest is history.

I don't understand how every reaction channel fails to play LONELY DAYS. It's their hardest rock song hit, and their first top 5 hit in the US ... in1970. It's mellow and heavy, and a bit psychedelic. Mending broken hearts and starting jokes is very good, but .... Amber would love it, and Jay would be stunned.

The power went out all the time and we would sit by the radio with candles waiting for the lights to come back on. Sometimes it took days. The local DJ played this song once or twice an hour to let us know the lights were still out. More 1970s memories. Not so sure it was a better time but my parents paid all the bills so that was cool. lol

I VERY rarely comment on videos but because you love the Bee Gees so much I feel compelled to point out something others have hinted at. The genius of the Bee Gees can be seen once you realize they had four different careers, one after the other, reinventing themselves each time. A unique achievement. The first began in the 60s and was more 'folk' like and features Robin heavily (I recommend "I Started a Joke.) The second career was when disco hit and they adapted to provide soundtracks to movies like Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Once disco died, that music was unpopular, so the Bee Gees stepped back, and instead wrote and produced for other artists (Barbra Streisand, Diane Warrick, Celine Dion, etc.) After enough time had passed, they came back AGAIN with their own music ("You Win Again" is a highlight.) So, there you have it, 4 careers which explain their varying sound from decade to decade. The genius that is the Bee Gees.

  • @kathleenblankenship1880
    @kathleenblankenship1880 9 місяців тому +3

Their old stuff, before disco, much more like this, and Robin often sang lead vocals. Robin was always my favorite, I don't think anyone can duplicate his voice. Even during the disco days, pretty much any song, my ear was searching for him. I started as a kid listening to their early stuff. My favorite is I started a joke. My brother in law is also a huge fan. We both have all their music. I can literally sit and listen to their catalog of music from early years to when Maurice passed, not playing any song more than once, and it will take all day. B sides of records, tracks on albums that weren't released as singles, etc. Now when I hear these older songs especially with Robin singing lead vocals, it's not unusual for me to shed a few tears. I hope you continue to play them. They were so talented, it really was a gift from God.

I am so glad you checked out this song! One of their early songs and it truly showcases the quality of Robin’s beautiful voice and live. Amber’s smile was priceless!
Robin and Barry shared the lead in the early days; Barry took over in the disco era; and they shared again in the later years.
Robin’s most famous lead songs are this one and I Started a Joke. Country Lanes is another beautiful one. I personally love 2 live performances that were 30 years apart. In 1974 I Can’t See Nobody
and Please in 2003 right after Maurice passed suddenly.
And to get a sense of his falsetto, check out Living Together! You will be shocked- it is higher than Barry’s!
Two great songs where Maurice sings lead are Closer than Close and Man in the Middle. He truly blended their voices together and was the glue.
The Bee Gees transcended over 50 years and are truly one of the best bands of all time.

Barry just recently received a Kennedy Center Award from President Biden a few months ago! Dione Warwick called Barry “the hit maker!” when they interviewed her about the music The Bee Gees wrote for her! While I love all 3 brothers and their individual voices, I often find myself saying, “sing it Robin!” when I hear his voice poke through. I started a joke, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Wedding Day are songs where Robin’s voice really shines! I also think you’d love to see the first time The Bee Gees were on TV in 1960! Time is passing by is the song they sang when they were young boys 9 and 11 and it was in Australia!

Nice song. I've always been a fan of Robin's singing. All of he Gibbs were flat-out talented. Fun facts:
Many of us have been pronouncing Maurice's name wrong. I've recently listened to old interviews with Barry and Robin; both of them pronounced his name like "Morris."
Also, Massachusetts was the Bee Gees very first recording to hit #1 on the charts (in England). Nice reaction, as always... Keep 'em coming.

Lonely Days or I Started a Joke as mentioned below. Joke is also Robin on lead vocal and both are pre-Disco hits. Lonely Days has a video from 1970 which shows Barry with long sideburns and no beard. That video is 4:11 in length. We all love the pre-Disco songs, but it's a good thing they had that Disco run, as it opened up doors for so many hits for other artists. Barry re-recorded Lonely Days with Little Big Town in 2021.

The Bee Gees are not a Disco Group. They were handed the opportunity to do the Soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever & Knocked it out of the park with Iconic Disco Tunes. They are a blue eyed soul group along with R&B and pop ballads. Robin did at least 50% of the lead singing pre Saturday night fever days. You should play Maurice Gibbs
" Wildflower" it's an absolutely beautifully sang by Maurice.

The story about this song. In the late 60s, during the flower power era, many young adults were heading west, especially San Francisco. And the band wondered about the parents and family that they left behind. So they picked an industrial northeast state and chose Massachusetts. They had never been to Massachusetts at the time.

Robin was more their lead singer than Barry in the 60s and early 70s, with many GREAT songs. He also had a solo career in Europe mostly in the 80s with songs like "Julia" and "Tokyo Nights" that reactors on UA-cam rarely listen to but that are a lot of fun. Other people in the comments here have suggested several of the Bee Gees' Sixties hits, but I would also add "Holiday."
