I LOVE the early Bee Gees. It was Robin that started. "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" is a song released by the Bee Gees in 1971. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single."
Correct and their third number one up to this point they would go on to have 12 songs that topped the charts in either the US or UK and wrote 8 number one's for others.
No! This is a Bee Gees song that Al Green loved so much that he also recorded it. This was the first song recorded by the brothers after their brief break up.
This is early BeeGees, but, not even the earliest BeeGees. They wrote all of their songs and also wrote for most of music industry. Robin has a very beautiful emotional sound. Each brother has a different sounding voice, although very similar, too.
"WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW" - the Bee Gees tribute to Carole King (and their take on her timeless classic...) is another masterpiece, beautifully and effortlessly delivered by these three Musical Geniuses.

The very first song by the Bee Gees I heard was Kilburn Towers. I was very young then and I was stunned. It was so beautiful and haunting at the same time. And so began my wonderful Bee Gees journey.

I watched an Australian interview with the BeeGees from their younger years. The interviewer asked Barry if he thought that his twin brothers had an invisible connection with their harmonies because they were twins. Before Barry had a chance to respond, Robin piped right in and said, "No, that's really not an issue because we're actually triplets. Barry is just deformed." Oh how brothers pick on one another. Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song in August 1970 with "Lonely Days" when the Gibb brothers had reconvened following a period of break-up and alienation. I can remember begging Mom to buy me the Best of the Bee Gee s album when it came out out in 1969. You haven't got to that period of their music yet. Watch out!
They wrote this and lonely days in one day. They were the first two songs they created after they got back together and they both went to number 1. Then their career hit a lull and then years later came back out without Jive Talkin. When they released Jive Talkin they did not tell the radio stations who was the artist behind Jive Talkin. Brilliant move and we know it worked out very well.
I grew up listening to the Bee Gee Brothers, & you have no idea how happy it makes me, to see the younger generation discover the music we fell in love with !!! All three brothers had their own unique falsetto's, baritone chest voices, and everything in-between, and were also able to slide up and down with ease!!! IMO, they are the most talented group, & exceptional singers of all time! They span over many decades, & crossed quite a few genres, so if you choose to go down this rabbit hole, you will have a terrific journey!! I believe, that if there is music in Heaven, it would sound like the Bee Gee's ❤❤❤
Some of the best writers of all time. People first think disco for them but they started long before disco was a thing and were still going when the fad ended.
BP, I've been a fan of The Bee Gees since their first LP/CD from '66. It seems to me that they kinda' had three careers like pop rock, disco and post disco. Since many of their fans mostly know of their disco days here is a whole catalog of their music from the beginning. If people want to check out this whole catalog they'll find out just how good The Bee Gees were: 1) Spicks And Specks LP/CD songs from '66: 1) Where Are You 2) Spicks And Specks 3) Playdown 4) Big Chance 5) Monday's Rain 6) How Many Birds. 2) The Bee Gees 1st LP/CD '67: 1) Holiday 2) Red Chair Fade Away 3) One Minute Woman 4) Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You 5) Cucumber Castle 5) To Love Somebody 6) Please Read Me 7) I Can't See Nobody. 3) Horizontal LP/CD '68: 1) And The Sun Will Shine 2) Birdie Told Me 3) With The Sun In My Eyes 4) Massachusetts 5) The Change Is Made (Great bluesy rocker!) 4) Bee Gees Idea LP/CD '68: 1) Let Their Be Love 2) Kitty Can 3) In The Summer Of His Years 4) Indian Gin And Whiskey Dry 5) I've Got To Get A Message To You 6) I Started A Joke. 5) Still Waters LP/CD from '97: 1) Alone 2) Irresistible Force 3) Obsessions 4) My Lover's Prayer (Great love ballad!). 6) Size Isn't Everything LP/CD from '93: 1) Kiss Of Life 2) For Whom The Bell Tolls 3) Fallen Angel *** (NOTE: This whole LP/CD has lots of great songs! *** 7) Other notable Bee Gees songs: 1) Tragedy 2) You Win Again. *** (SORRY I CAN'T LIST EVERYTHING! Like others said, they could sing different genres from country, pop, R&B/soul, soft rock, etc. and you can find a song from them from each of those! Just think, they wrote one of the most popular country songs ever recorded “Islands in the Stream” by Kenny & Dolly! The Bee Gees were fantastic whether they were performing or songwriting!
This was the Bee Gees first #1 hit in the US but all of their early stuff is great. They first started singing in the late '50s and throughout the late '60s early '70s produced a slew of great songs. The exaggerated falsetto singing you were used to was more pronounced in their disco music phase and it was unique to them but doesn't define the greatness of this band. Thanks for another great reaction on music you're just discovering, we've loved this since it came out in 1971!
FYI-Bee Gees have been performing and recording since 1963! Check out I Started A Joke-one of their finest that will tug at your heart strings. This is how the Bee Gees sounded back in the day and how most of us heard them back in the day-the falsetto style later was an aberration of their sound.
The beegees broke up for a year too. They finally put the pain behind them and got back together. And this was the collaboration song that they sang when they first started singing as the beegees again..
This is a Barry led song, actually. Barry had it pretty much finished when Robin returned after the breakup, and he asked Robin if he wanted to help him finish it. Then Barry let Robin sing the first verse as a sort of olive branch. After that Barry takes over.
@@kthor No, and she’s the dumb one. And in the minority. I don’t know anyone, including my teenaged daughter, who doesn’t love that song and think it’s the coolest, catchiest thing. The comments in videos for this song are long and enthusiastic. It helped to make Grease a hit. Susie’s so jealous of Barry’s successes. If only she knew the story behind those lyrics. Nothing dumb about how he somehow made the lack of knowledge he was given about the movie, just given the movie title, and told they needed it quick, into something cool that somehow fit the feel of the movie. I even love how he literally used what he was told over the phone, in the lyrics: Grease is the word. It’s great, it’s brilliant, and it shows his sense of humor.
You have no idea how amazing the brothers gibb were! Because I was born in 72 my absolute favorite song is how deep is your love. I was too young to see the movie and I was too young to realize how extensive their catalog is. When I got into my 30s I discovered them and their songs. So amazing. They even put out a new album that I bought and I loved it. 'this is just where I came in' I think. Great great album I loved it. Their proudest moment was being inducted into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and publishing over 1000 songs most of them recorded by other artists. Truly amazing ❤❤❤
Most people correlate the Bee Gees with the disco era(ie:Saturday Night Fever soundtrack ) but they did sooo much more before & after that era. They had so many folk, rock, country & pop hits throughout 40+ yrs! Thx for sharing Black Pegasus :)
These lads started young, in the days of skiffle which was a pop form that pre-dated The Beatles. They ended up being around long enough to have their music evolve, which is more than most groups can even DREAM of! Kudos for their determination and discipline.
A beautiful song of sorrow at losing a love. It could apply to any way to suffer a loss really. Thanks for reacting to it. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Al Green covered this. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart was the last #1 hit by the Bee Gees in 1970 before their comeback hit called Jive Talkin' in 1975😮😊when their Disco phase began. They would eventually become the best selling Disco act of all time by the end of the 1970's😮😊😊

Lonely Days is another masterpiece and there is a great video of them performing it with Maurice on piano.....so young and gifted🔥 And yes, brother Andy also had the gift, he could sing anything with anybody and did! He was a duet king, host of Solid Gold, sang classics in a tux with Dean Martin, entertained troops with Bob Hope (check video of After Dark), did comedy on variety shows, on & on. Andy sang a stunning version of the BeeGees classic Words as a Command Performance for President Reagan (there's a video). It'll give you goosebumps. L-R, they are Robin, Barry, and Maurice (pronounced "Morris"). This was a hit in 1971. Their '60s stuff is the best. Check out "Words," "Massachusetts," "I Started A Joke," "I've Got to Get A Message to You" and more.
Their beautiful voices still give me the chills.
And for something totally different, try "You Win Again" with its industrial beat.
I can remember begging Mom to buy me the Best of the Bee Gee s album when it came out out in 1969. You haven't got to that period of their music yet. Watch out!
Fun fact: there was a fourth BeeGee, Andy Gibb. He died in 1988 at age 30. The BeeGees are one of the best.
Andy was nicknamed the baby Bee Gee
Fun fact?
They wrote this and lonely days in one day. They were the first two songs they created after they got back together and they both went to number 1. Then their career hit a lull and then years later came back out without Jive Talkin. When they released Jive Talkin they did not tell the radio stations who was the artist behind Jive Talkin. Brilliant move and we know it worked out very well.
Barry is a lifelong fan of country
I loved the Bee Gees. Im 66 and live your channel. Blessings to you and your wonderful family
One of their best songs IMO - early BeeGees were great and had lots of hits
To find obscure Bee Gees go back to 1963, there are so many treasures to see!
Some of the best writers of all time. People first think disco for them but they started long before disco was a thing and were still going when the fad ended.
They started performing together as kids. The recording career began in 1966
The Bee Gees are/were magnificent and I loved their pre disco music. Great reaction.❤️✌🏻🎶
Al Greene almost immediately covered it as soon as he heard it.
Don't forget about Andy Gibb he was also gone way too soon 😢
Dude, these cats were the shit in the 70’s disco age. Talk bout harmonizing🙏🏽Straight floetry. God Bless ya man🥊🤠
BP, I've been a fan of The Bee Gees since their first LP/CD from '66. It seems to me that they kinda' had three careers like pop rock, disco and post disco. Since many of their fans mostly
know of their disco days here is a whole catalog of their music from the beginning. If people want to check out this whole catalog they'll find out just how good The Bee Gees were:

There was so much great BeeGees music BEFORE the Disco Era. There were a lot of ballads. I think Robin sang lead on this one.
Check out ‘To Love Somebody’ and ‘More Than a Woman’.
To Love Somebody is one of my favorites! ❤
This is a Barry led song, actually. Barry had it pretty much finished when Robin returned after the breakup, and he asked Robin if he wanted to help him finish it. Then Barry let Robin sing the first verse as a sort of olive branch. After that Barry takes over.
Such a kind-hearted big brother!♥️
@ He really is. No matter what.
@@BGWhispererWell said & yes she is! Think her jealousy has only gotten worse.😁
To Love Somebody, one of the most beautiful ever written. Barry, a prolific songwriter, wrote it for Otis Redding who passed before recording it.
"To Love Somebody" from german tv 1967, also "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Massachussets", "First of May", their 1960's songs are brilliant.
I love their older stuff more than the disco era
Same. Some good dance songs but pre and post disco is my favorite.
Most people correlate the Bee Gees with the disco era(ie:Saturday Night Fever soundtrack ) but they did sooo much more before & after that era. They had so many folk, rock, country & pop hits throughout 40+ yrs! Thx for sharing Black Pegasus :)
I loved them up to that point and was extremely disappointed in the sellout to crappy "music".
I grew up with this music hearing it again makes me feel good
These lads started young, in the days of skiffle which was a pop form that pre-dated The Beatles. They ended up being around long enough to have their music evolve, which is more than most groups can even DREAM of! Kudos for their determination and discipline.
Absolutely beautiful and they can sing without music and harmonize incredibly because they can just sing and have the greatest voices and talent
A beautiful song of sorrow at losing a love. It could apply to any way to suffer a loss really.
Thanks for reacting to it.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Classic Bee Gees such a unique sound.....awesome
Al Green covered this. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart was the last #1 hit by the Bee Gees in 1970 before their comeback hit called Jive Talkin' in 1975😮😊when their Disco phase began. They would eventually become the best selling Disco act of all time by the end of the 1970's😮😊😊
The Gibb Brothers wrote this & recorded it before Al Green did . This was early BeeGees . Check him at age 19 performing live on The Midnight Special doing the first of his 3 consecutive #1 hits, I Just Want To Be Your Everything. Major talent & truly missed ❤
Great info about little Andy. He was also in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in '82, on top of a big float singing Any Dream Will Do!
