The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The amount of talent on this stage at this time in history was remarkable.
unmatched!
😊😊 Yes absolutely no question ❓ for the talent on stage
Eddie singing Baby Love is just like it was meant for him.
Eddie could make any song his. That voice was golden.
Yes! ❤️
No doubt. I felt a chill when he sung it. Thank God for recordings. My feelings would definitely be hurt. Melvin Franklin is my all time favorite.
That was my favorite part. Wish it was a little longer.
E. K.'s angelic falsetto sends Baby Love to an entirely higher plane, much smoother than hers ever was. Ruff' stole the show. "Prime" Classic Five right here baby...Haa'Mercy!
David Ruffin took took 'em all to church as usual! When he hit that high note Diana became his student because she couldn't match him. Mary and Cindy were beautiful and all of the Tempts handsome.🙏
Even at the end she's still sticking her arm out front. 🙄 She was definitely out antic'ed that night. David was not here for the games. 😂
Everytime David sings I’m reminded of why ain’t NOBODY come to see Otis 😍😍😍😍😍😍
best words in the movie FR
Ha. lol
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂
😂😂😂😂
4:17 I love it when Melvin joined Mary and Cindy in gettin down!
I know he was cutting the rug
my favorite parrrrt
@Thomasina Brown
I think they dated at 1 point
It's sad to watch "the Supremes" (Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong) be utilized as mere ornamental background dancers.
@Thomasina Brown He likes him some Mary. But she's with Tom Jones during this time LOL
Good lord, David Ruffin just gave me goosebumps!!! That man sang that song baby!🔥🔥
❤️💕❤️💖❤️💕❤️💕❤️
This was an iconic appearance. The Losing You rendition was incredible.
Yeah maybe the best thing ever on television ha ha -from 2:30 is just -wow.
I agree, in most part because of Dave Ruffin's performance... Amazing! I can watch this over and over.
@@frankdiaz2038 you are full of bull! David has done that song many times. To me this was not his best performance, because his voice cracked and he was over singing. That's not to say it was bad though. However, you all are just saying that because Diana started out and aced his song and he tried to get it back by over singing. Why can't you all just say they both did a good job. Diana added to that song very much.
^He mad
@@petebrowne9918 Uhh, wrong. You have no idea what you are talking about.
I absolutely love David Ruffins voice
I loved the way he sung stop in the name of Love! once he hit that high note and held it that was it!
“Baby baby Im aWAAARE of where you go….”David just was so gifted
The fact that Barry changed the key on the song because Diana couldn't do it and David was mad and hit it anyways is just amazing to me. He definitely was a powerhouse singer.
Ashley say so..Lol
@@mr.madmanswiss1235 Of course🤣🤣
YES!!! So true!
she wasn't a good singer 😕 to meOk!
but she jammed on this I love this priceless video her head moves were good david blew it out !
@@lindahines9380 Same
Both a musical and visual treat. Both groups performing each others' songs equally well. Pure TALENT.
Hearing this group. Is a wonderful experience.
Yes!!
Amen this is OG music at its finest all i listen too👏👏👏👏👌👌
It like watching VERSUZ
That scream 4:07 nobody could beat that even James brown can’t do that’s
Diana’s little bird chirp @4:05 is HILARIOUS! 😩😂David hit the note in a higher key and then some! 🔥🔥🔥
She really tried it 😂😂😂
Mr. Ruffin was indeed ALL OF THAT!!!!
@@rioboy13 and a case of 🍟 chips lmfao!
@@lindahines9380 for real!
Lmao there was no soul behind that chrip lol. David's growl mopped the floor
Until David came to the front, it was the Diana Ross and 7 dancers show. Poor Mary and Cindy, they really had nothing to do in this medley, but look gorgeous, which they did.
Even though at this time the group name changed, I still wished they let Mary and Cindy sing lead in this like how the temptations were switching leads. It would’ve been better in my opinion
😂😂😂
They didn't even let them sing the damn BACKGROUND!!! It was ashamed how they did them girls! I see why Florence felt the way she did.
@@stephanie3506 you're just now seeing the light! ross cared about nobody but ross
This flip side is was one of my ULTIMATE records ! The Stylitics could do no wrong !
I’m a 90s baby and my parents are baby boomers. This music feeds my soul more than anything on the airwaves “catered” to my generation. This is truly timeless talent.
Because there was no Auto-Tune back then. You either had the talent, or left the room quietly without the door hittin' you in the fanny. Today's pop music sounds very synthetic, strange and soulless to me.
@@erossinema8797 Secially soulless...
@96Jazangel hopefully me and my band YahTribe will provide a resurgence of TRUE SOUL!
RIP David Ruffin
RIP Ed Sullivan
RIP Melvin Franklin
RIP Eddie Kendricks
RIP Paul Williams
RIP Dennis Edwards
RIP Mary Wilson
RIP Flo Ballard (not in this video)
A moment in time, I wish I had come up during this era!
Don't Forget Dennis Edwards
There will never be another vocal group like the Temptations till
Eternity rolls in.
@Ronald McFondle Yes and she is still a Superstar 50 plus years later, Wow, Ms. Ross is the Boss.:-)
Ronald McFondle she really has! She’s one of the few active Motown performers today and also the ONLY living cast member of the Wiz!
@@1ddedde Wow!
I was ten years old when I saw this. My eyes was stuck on Diana Ross and I wanted to be just like her. I used to practice with a fake mic. This brings back such fond memories. They were our ICONS and still are!! Love them dearly!!
For many of us, it's a HUGE part of the soundtrack of our lives. Their talent was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
Wow - a stage worth literally $Billions in music talent and still counting! The studio brought out the glamour and incredible voices for a dramatic colorful exciting production.
IagreeOoi
Two of Motown’s greatest groups performing together
This is raw talent. Men and Women singing LIVE.
I wanted to hear eddie sing baby love more damn it but wow david def stole the show and i ain't mad at all
The way David came in and owned it at the end lmao
Simply incredible!
Ugh, I love David and Eddie soooo much!!
It’s the temptations dancing and background vocals. David taking over .
What a time it was for music ! Two of the Biggest. Hottest groups ever. Glad I was in my 20's then and got to enjoy them during my youth !
Dang David! You saved I’m Losing You from Diana’s butchering. I know she let you have it after 😂🤣. Thanks Ashley SaysSo!
😂He did that on purpose cuz she was trippin backstage😂
He 👏 snapped 👏
Diana wasn't even in David's league an she know it before she tried to have her way with his song.
berry Gordy got in his case after this show but david stood his ground
ok. lmfao! I heard he fired him I don't
know
look how cute eddie is here💋
Y'all
For all your judgement of diana
She jams on this period
Oh
Yesssssss
The temptations rock it
When Diana whips that hair back she is letting you know she's about to turn it out. Diana slayed them!!!!!
Melvin gettin it in the background and David is doing his big one. Then like Soul Train everyone breaks out. This is television history ❤
Diana wasn't slaying nothing, honey. There's no upstaging Mr. David Eli Ruffin, and definitely no outsinging him. "The Boss" was crying in the car that night. He schooled her thoroughly.
Amazing! I can't tell whose song is whose! David Ruffin singing Stop in the Name of Love? He owned it!
Diana, was on point. Not my favorite person but it was pure brilliance putting her lead. She paved a road on melancholy notes, so others could sing.
Diana 💛❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is absolute proof of the brilliance of the songwriters of Motown. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
They are all amazing. It is wonderful to see that much talent in one place on stage. It's awesome.
Say what you will but Diana was in her element on 'Get Ready & My Girl" & I've never cared for her voice but it's distinctive as hell.
Ruffin was on another level...what a voice.
Hey! Don't forget Eddie. Best falsetto singer ever!
I love Eddie but that's taking it to far. Little Anthony, Al green, Marvin gaye, Michael Jackson, blue magic, Ronnie Dyson, jodeci, delfonics, and earth wind and fire might be a step ahead of him.
@@aaronmack9958 you named some good ones and I could add to your list; Bloodstone, After 7, Switch. But Eddie was always my fav.
@@terryrobinson3760 definitely had more swag than most of them. Dang after seven and their brother baby face forgot all about them.
Hold on!! AG, MG and MJ weren't falsettos🤯🤯
@@terryrobinson3760 they didn't always sing falsetto but mg got to give it up, makes me wanna holla and Michael Jackson don't stop to you get enough was enough for me. Lol. Al green is maybe a stretch but it was higher than his singing voice
Wonderful! And Mary, when she dance ... wow!!
Eddie Kendricks or David Ruffin could take any song from the Supremes and take it to another level-they were very talented.
I swear at 0:35 when Diana looks back at Paul, you can hear Paul hype up Diana and tell her to, “Come on!”
She sound so so soft 😢
It's the backup singers dancing for me.
Those are hardly "backup singers".....that's The Supremes and The Temptations! Every one of those people are music legends in their own right, and all Hall of Famers.
This is History of music
I'd rather here David's version of stop in the name of love than Diana's. He killed it.
I agree
Excellent at it's best
Motown is the best genre of music change my mind.
Iconic mashup😘💝🙆🤗🎺🎷💝💃💃
WOW!
Diana has the stage to her! What a performancer! I luv "My Girl " in her voice
Great idea (pairing), predictable results with Ruffin up there. That said, Diana Ross deserves every accolade in the world for holding her own in a performance together with (versus?) one of the greatest live performers/male singers ever in David Ruffin. That moment at 3:36 as Diana Ross turns around said it all about the David Ruffin "timing". Will never be another like David or Diana.
Pure gold!
4:09 david hit the scream let’s get down boys 😂
David Ruffin put those songs to bed!!
It's worth being old now, to have been young then. There's nothing like '60's music, ''60's dance moves, 60's mini-skirts - of course the war was a bummer.
Diana can really sing . .. . .damn I'm like surprised
She sound so naturally talented. In todays era women can't sing like this
What’s so fascinating about 60’s era Diana Ross is how she sings EVERYTHING. Damn near every style of music! Their live shows were golden.
People think just cause her voice is a little high pitch that her singing isn't strong. It actually is strong. She was a great performer. The original beyonce.
@@dangerislander I agree with you in the sense that Diana Ross is voice is strong. Due to her voice type, it just carries differently as it's a light lyrical sound. However, her artistry is more versatile than Beyonce.
Many singers can sing today. WTF.
@@Sttephy30 yes you're correct, but they tend to stay in there Same style of music pretty much. At this point in her career, she wasn't singing the more really classic R&B and people weren't really used to her singing a little more raw, as she was known more for the pop. She did do it early in her career but people don't really remember those songs. However, she did do it with artists like Ashford and Simpson.
This music will never grow old we may but not the music. The music will be around for generations and so will there hit songs. 😉🙏
I couldn't do nothing but laugh 😂 David owned Diana Ross this day 🤣
David Ruffin had one of if not the greatest voices ever. He left too soon.
The dude Ruffin was the best ever👌
Fantastic Music. I'm in my 60s & I'll Never grow tired of Diana Ross, the Supremes, and the Temptations...the Best Ever!! TY for the video!
ok granpda
Ms Ross can dance..❤❤❤
I cannot tell you how good that made me feel, Damn I wish I could go back to those times!
Biggest moment in history
There are many components to singing that determine SuperStar status besides just range: -----> diction, tone, intonation, poise, stage presence, delivery, tone placement, harmony, blend, balance, phrasing, articulation, rhythm, and over-all artistry. I could listen to both groups ALL DAY....!!! They are all greats...!!! Badmouthing any of them only shows your vocal musical ignorance. 😃😃😃😃😃
David was the man.
It would have been nice for the Supremes to exchange leads on songs like the Temptations.
@Ronald McFondle still is
Mary Wilson voice is not good to lead songs
Man, this brings tears to me 'ol eyes. What great talent. Om Shanthi
Diana and Otis Williams are the only original members that are still alive.
2:14 im so in love with Eddie omg
Ashley says so bought me here 😊😊😊
Diane singing get ready by Eddie Kendrick’s gave me chills
Applause Applause ❤ madness utter madness
David did those gospel runs at the end to intentionally throw off Diana to spite Berry Gordy. Mary was looking very fine on this episode as well, couldn't keep my eyes off of her
But was she thrown off? Can you document that he 'intentionally' this for the purposes of throwing off another singer as opposed to David being the great performer he was? Yes, there was a most likely a friendly rivalry; however, nothing as serious as the Diana haters try to make it out to be. One thing, in hindsight, that I wish is that she had left the Supremes earlier because her persona and talent was too much to big to be contained within a group. This is not to belittle the other talented ladies; however, she was always going to get the most attention.
@@jobucats2166 In a Temptations book i read they described this performance. He purposely tried to "take it to church" to try to throw Diana off because David felt like she wouldnt be able to keep up. The ad libs and shrieks were not in the rehearsals. You can tell she was at least out of her element at the end.
@@TurmericJenkins , Thank you for that documentation. Even though I am a fan of Diana's music, I'll have to agree that "taking it to church" is pretty much out of her comfort zone. David does it with ease. While we are mentioning David, although no one can 'be David Ruffin', the Temptations were fortunate to have Dennis to follow him. Dennis won me over as "Yeah, he needs to be here" on the TCB special as the Temptations were performing "I'm Losin' You". Take care.
When the Tempts sang “Stop In the Name of Love’ it was over. David Ruffin, Boyeee!
@@chriscurtis8344 Facts! David was already turning up.
I get the shivers when diana sings I'm losing you.
those were thw days
C était Une grande époque magique Merci
Luv this❤
Imagine Barry Gordy backstage watching all this. Glad he's still with us!
That classic Temptations lineup could sing the damn phone book and it would be a top 10 hit!😊
Boy I love the supremes I do , but the temptations did the supremes songs as good if not better. Eddie was utterly amazing and David Ruffin ? Wow one of the top singers of-all time and it shows.
Oh my stars!! That was Soo cool hope that did each other's song!! My born day is 12/28/85 and I LOVE BOTH OF THESE GUYS!!🌹💜🤎🙌🏾🔥
Ché musica meravigliosa, bravi artisti, super super
I saw Mary sing a duet with Georgie Fame on a UK tour in 2010/11,and the power, purity and majesty of her voice made the hairs on the back of neck stand on end.
