An excellent comment, Michael. Levi was offered untold rewards to go solo but wouldn’t leave unless the same was offered to his band mates. Respect, Levi, a real man.
Man oh man Levi Stubbs in my humble opinion was the greatest Motown lead singer... this song really touched me especially this version. He had a Voice that only comes along once in a lifetime ... Amen .
Well said is so right, Levi had a voice of an Angel, he was a world class act..... David Ruffin had a voice, but my opinion Levi was the better, for sure.....he will be so missed....Dee
The Four Tops are truly missed! I am 63 years old every one of their records was a hit to me there is not one that I don't like I twist and turn Bob my head and pop my fingers to all their Cuts long live The Four Tops🕴🕴🕴🕴 🌹🌹🌹
Your grandfather in law sir, if someone could have a perfect voice it would be him God rest his soul as well as Lawrence and Obie. Duke is still alive and am wanting to meet him so badly.
No matter how rotten life can treat ya, must say I cannot complain about the music of the 50s- to the 80s; and how lucky we were to have lived it. God bless America.
ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL & AMAZING! This man has an incredible Baritone Opera Voice that's defined as a "deep, rich, and powerful male voice that falls between bass & tenor range." That's exactly what Levi has to the letter!
Levi does that to any human with a heart. He sang from the depths of his soul to the depths of the souls of his listeners. His singing made the Four Tops an epic group.
Rarely does someone’s voice make me cry. Levi Stubbs voice was Truly God given. I wish I have had the good fortune to have seen the Four Tops in person. You Tube and some wonderful recordings will keep their talent alive. Perhaps someday soon the world can feel the love I have in my heart for this man and his lifelong friends.
The tops were truly detroit. Born n raised. From the place I call home...U can hear the story of the great city of Detroit just listening to the great Levi Stubbs..it encompasses all we've endured past n present. Some day it will be restored I pray im alive to see it.
Levi Stubbs was an incredible singer and this live performance proves that he was one of the most underappreciated singers of the Motown era. He defined some of the most powerful and emotional and meaningful songs of the 1960s. Classy and nuanced and unparalleled in popular music.
@@yarygork2334 The truth is, there are other artists in the Motown stable who had longer and more enduring success and are more readily remembered than Levi Stubbs. The Four Tops did not have many hits after their string of hits in the 60s. Other Motown figures and groups went on to continued success: Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, among others. The Tops kept performing, but they didn't have huge hits in the 70s and 80s like the other acts did. This is why I say Levi Stubbs was and is underappreciated. He was influential in ways many may not consider. Listen to young Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5, for example. His soulful emphasis echos Stubbs own Gospel influenced declaration; at times, he sounded like a mini Levi. Many never noticed that because Jackson was so associated with Diana Ross and even James Brown.
The greatest voice i ever heard... Levi Stubbs great great performance! Sure miss this kind of music. I grew up listening to Motown!! Fantasic. Thank you so much for this clip and that great voice and the 4Tops!!
Levi, the best voice in Motown!! His range was unbelievable especially on " Just ask the Lonely " live from Paris. It still brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to him sing that song. Some folk day Ruffin had the best voice, but for me it will always be Levi Stubbs!!!!
He could sing and he was fine! The group was amazing. I could watch them all day. I think there's only one original Top still with us. Incredible talent.
Levi Stubbs..one of a kind and boy is he and his beautiful voice and music missed. I was a teen growing up listening to Motown and loving every second of it.This man could really tear at your heart with his music.
Amazing x best song they ever sang - Levi Stubbs was never given the full credit that he deserved for an incredible voice, along with Abdul, Renaldo and Lawrence - loved it in 1960s growing up still love it today!
The Supremes became Diana Ross and the Supremes, Diana left the Supremes in 1970. David Ruffin wanted the Temptations to be called David Ruffin and the Temptations, he went solo in 1968. Levi Stubbs had offers to become a solo performer but he chose to stay with his friends for their long, successful ride!
Levi Stubbs was not only the greatest lead singer, he was the best, & when you have the best you can't get any better than that, he had the voice of an Angel.... I loved him & the rest of members, they were world class gentlemen, loved them❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏Dee
Listen to the amazing control that Levi displays so effortlessly here! He is completely in command of his exceptional voice and offers such powerful emotion in his delivery. Just incredible!
I'm 41 this year. Always behind my time. In the 90's and 00's I was listening to 70's, now it's the 20's and I'm listening to 50's and 60's. I LOVE the 4 Tops, their sound strikes me deeply. Just beautiful music.
From the first moment I heard The Four zTops, I was hooked. Levi’s voice makes me feel wonderful inside. Poor guy, he’s sweating his butt off in this video, but he’s still giving it all he’s got, and he sounds absolutely incredible! I miss you Mr. Stubbs. Your voice was a gift from God, and I am so thankful that I can still listen to it.
ALL OF THE FOUR TOPS ARE SINGING THIS BEAUTIFUL WITH SUCH INTENSE EMOTIONS. YOU CAN CLEARLYSEE IT ON THEIR FACES VERY NICE VIDEO TO WATCH. SO SERENE😌😌 Lisa
The Four Tops...what can I say..they took me through my teenage years..marvellous, thank you., im now 63 and still smiling and crying as I listen to their lovely voices., bless you Mr. Stubbs., R.I.P., bless you all. love kat❤❤❤
Love you!. Where I grew up ( Torrance Glasgow) we didn’t show discrimination maybe bigotry but bigotory just through ignorance. I loved the soul music back then and still do.
What a greatness, what a class, what an incredible group they were! It is a cliché and therefore absolutely true in every sense: they don't make music like this anymore in these harsh en shredded times. (Four years later, 2023) the brilliance of this vocal group is as dazzling as ever. Their music, despite the sometimes gloomy lyrics, gives comfort and hope. That there are also people who create true art and beauty is a thought that brings light.
Levi Stubbs is the man . Never sold out but stood by his friends . That says it all !
Yes the name The Four Tops stayed.
I’ve seen what fate befell lots of groups whose lead singer left! Thank God this gruesome stuff was not put on fakar-benson & Payton!
GORDY TRIED TO SEPARATE THEM. FRIENDSHIP MEANS MORE PEICE OF MIND . HE STOOD BY HIS BOYS. THE DUKES BIO,, GORDY WAS A POS
Oh my god this lifeless classic never to be repeated again
An excellent comment, Michael. Levi was offered untold rewards to go solo but wouldn’t leave unless the same was offered to his band mates. Respect, Levi, a real man.

exactly and well said!
@@yarygork2334 Completely agree.
Maybe David Ruffin of The Temptations was better.
@@Atlantis93 love Levi but David is the correct answer.
Well said is so right, Levi had a voice of an Angel, he was a world class act..... David Ruffin had a voice, but my opinion Levi was the better, for sure.....he will be so missed....Dee
What a great human being putting his friends and his principles first before further fame
Hands down, the greatest Lead Soul Singer of our Lifetime ... RIP Sir !
TRIPLE AMEN! Levi's voice was WAY under rated. The man has a sensational Opera Voice!
He'll yeah one of the best 😊
First time hearing this live version. It was so beautiful, nearly had me in tears. What a moving performance!
What a voice ! The range , power , control and richness . I hope this mans voice is never forgotten .
TRIPLE AMEN! I said the EXACT same thing years ago on a different UA-cam video featuring this track!
My Grand-Father-In-Law, Levi, and The Tops....The best to ever do it.
John Vaughn you and your wife was so blessed to have Levi in your lives wishing your families a Merry Christmas stay safe and be blessed.

I am in awe of Levi’s voice and the fact that he and his friends maintained their close personal relationship for so many years. God Bless them
This has to be one of Levi Stubbs best ever performances. raw talent
It's a gift you can't learn that one .😂💕
I was a teenager during the Motown era. Some of the best music ever made. My heart broke when Levi Stubbs died.
Mine still aches that he's gone !!!
I hate that he's gone, also. that's why the music and the videos are so important to me. love them!!
No matter how rotten life can treat ya, must say I cannot complain about the music of the 50s- to the 80s; and how lucky we were to have lived it. God bless America.
I was also 14. I can't stand the "music" I hear today. What crap. All sound-a-likes. Ridiculous lyrics. Nobody has any STYLE at all.
I was 15 in 1967, 2 years before graduating from High School in W Philly! This song.......My Goodness!!
ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL & AMAZING! This man has an incredible Baritone Opera Voice that's defined as a "deep, rich, and powerful male voice that falls between bass & tenor range." That's exactly what Levi has to the letter!
WOW...JUST CAN'T STOP CRYING...LEVI NO ONE LIKE HIM EVER..RIP
Typing with a lump in my throat....and I can almost see the screen. Levi was my heart. So many superb artists came out of Motown.
the best music of my lifetime came from the 60s. So many great Motown and other artists. Somehow, we have lost our way in the culture.
So refreshing to see a lead singer who does not let it go to his head ...are you listening Miss Ross?
Levi does that to any human with a heart. He sang from the depths of his soul to the depths of the souls of his listeners. His singing made the Four Tops an epic group.
😰😰so miss them my very first Motown love ..... but I’ve always got their music into my old age...... RIP guys 😪😪

Oh....that was a one and only voice ever.
Spectacular performance by one of the greatest singers ever to hold a mike! WOW.
you feel everything when levi sings the voice is amazing
One of the most beautiful voices in music history.
The 4 tops never phoned it in. Every song. Every lyric. Every line, had a history, a purpose, a history, and was fro the heart.
I’m spent! Levi! dam! He was working for every note…a beautiful sight to see and hear! RIP BEAUTIFUL MAN!
Fabulous four tops the best Motown group by far
👍👍👍👍 🎤🎤🎤🎤
Any of us who had the fortune of seeing Levi and the Tops live know that he had one of the greatest voices ever recorded.
The tops were truly detroit. Born n raised. From the place I call home...U can hear the story of the great city of Detroit just listening to the great Levi Stubbs..it encompasses all we've endured past n present. Some day it will be restored I pray im alive to see it.
Omg levi stubbs has the greatest voice love the four tops bigtime🙏😢💙💙💙💙
One of Motown's best tunes and my favorite of the Tops. Levi and the guys were the best.
The Four Tops were always a class act and Levi Stubbs had an extraordinary soulful voice and truly outdid himself when he recorded "Ask The Lonely " .
So true!
this is one of the best versions !!
Look up "When she was my girl ". A masterpiece !
Saw them live in early 80s . So I can say I witnessed one of the greatest vocalists of the last century
Levi Stubbs was an incredible singer and this live performance proves that he was one of the most underappreciated singers of the Motown era. He defined some of the most powerful and emotional and meaningful songs of the 1960s. Classy and nuanced and unparalleled in popular music.

@@curtispeters4725 What songs in your opinion does Michael sounds like a young Levi??? That's a good analysis to consider.
No autotune. Just raw talent. Mr. Levi Stubbs: a man of immense vocal gifts and character. Motown’s finest.
April 2023, been watching a lot of my favorite MoTown music, remembering the days we didn't hate one another because of skin color.
Incredible!
God Bless the Four Tops, was lucky enough to see them at Winter Gardens Bournemouth. Best night of my life.
Levi Stubbs, The GOAT!!!!!! Sooo handsome here too. The Four Tops!! Wow! what would Motown have been without them??
