Sunstreaker simply because he is unique one out of the original lineup,the Autobots are cookie cutter good guys and that's kinda boring,thats fine with optimus prime and bumblebee but everyone? so to me he stood out,An Autobot that does not immediately like or trusts human is a interesting idea,we saw this with Bayverse Ironhide (kinda in first movie and other like comics and ROTF videogame warroom scenes) and ROTB Optimus

As a fellow Sunstreaker fanboy, I approve of this video. In the Dreamwave comics, Sunstreaker was also said to be a pit-fighter and mural artist. A narcissistic artist with a murderous side? Yes! Yes! Yes!

The funny thing about the Autobots is that most of their bios are like this. Budiansky seemed to have really wanted you to get the idea that the Autobots were as bad as the Decepticons and the one making the difference and keeping them good enough to be the good guys was Optimus.
Yes he did a fantastic job in making so many characters really nuanced on both sides. Like not all autobots wanted to stay on earth. Also not Al Decepticons were intrinsically evil. Like my favorite, thundercracker who only joined the Decpticons out of fear of Megatron.
Hopefully the new comic can showcase these nuances character wise. Sunstreaker being a straight murder adds so dimension to his character as a Autobot.
Sunstreaker was my first transformer. I saved up my allowance and bought him in 84. I read all the bios of all the toys and thought his was the best, as a kid i really liked how he seemed morally grey as opposed to all the other figures. And i liked that his arms bent at the elbow.
Sideswipe's and Sunstreaker's bios were accidently switched on release. Sunstreaker thought Sideswipe's vehicle mode was ruined by having that exposed rear engine which Sunstreaker has.
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Which is why Sunstreaker has his somewhat iconic red shoulders, that nearly every version tries to recreate or homage. They were stickers for the Red Version "Spinout" to give him a red bumper, and they just never changed those to yellow.
I think that detail of red is so oftentimes underaporeciated. That and the black stripe on the sides sides of the car. It's small color details like these that break up all the red and makes sunstreaker even cooler in my eyes :)
Yeah, I do like Sunstreaker, but I wouldn't mind seeing the personalities swapped to the original character- Even "Sideswipe" sounds like something a dirty fighter like Sunstreaker would do.

sunstreaker is the kind of autobot who would probably get canceled by earth standards, but because he is so good at what he does there is no way anyone would ever bench him.
Loved that moment in the IDW comic where the other Autobots discover that not only has Sunstreaker been resurrected, but Ironhide as well. They're all overjoyed to see Ironhide, but they just treat Sunstreaker with cold indifference. Ouch!
It's a shame we had seen very little of Sunstreaker in the G1 cartoon and comic book and he was petty much ignored for a long time. It'd be interesting to see how he interacted with other Autobots but the episode plots were watered down and production rushed plus there were quite a lot of characters to deal with so those Autobots with more interesting personalities, quirks and histories were pushed aside, plus Hasbro said to keep Bumblebee, Ironhide at the forefront because those toys sold the least. I liked Sideswipe but he was made a very much a background character, sadly.
They had to juggle a huge cast of characters and invetably some would fall thru the cracks. And ultimately this was a kids show so the resident a-hole wasn't high on their top priorities to feature. Oh well still a missed opportunity...
I love sunstreaker, he’s such an asshole! His personality is far more suited for a Stunticon but the Bots keep him around because he’s so good at what he does. It’s reminiscent of why Megs keeps Starscream around (altho we never really see Screamer shine like we do with Streaker). We need more bad boys on the Bots. Streaker and Grimlock can’t have all the fun.
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf It's a weird quirk, but a lot of the OG Transformers kind of had a superiority complex when it came to "lesser" beings... and... it's not a defining trait of Decepticons. Autobots are just less likely, but it's not even something fully thrown out in more modern stuff.
Sunstreaker's vent thingys are based on a real-world modification some Lamborghinis have. Also what Sideswipe's jetpack was inspired by before the nameswap.
Botcon actually took that transformers universe Sunstreaker/Sideswipe mold and turned it into Punch/Counterpunch and there should be toy reviews on it.
I met a person cosplaying as sunstreaker/Sideswipe… it was pretty good! (Also, only saw the head, can’t tell which one is which, it’s been 35+ years!😅)
I had the red diaclone as a kid (and the black ironhide), so I'm all about the 'spinout' recolors. I haven't seen it mentioned, but he was the first car-to-robot transformer ever produced. I'd love to see him included as a 'missing link' like the upcoming Optimus, with improved articulation.
Yup! I completely forgot to mention that he was the first, which would most likely explain his wonky proportions. I also heard that the original molds have been lost which would explain the lack of original Sunstreaker toy reissues? And yes I agree with you, a missing link Sunny would be awesome, although that might open up a new collecting rabbit hole to fall into 😂
1:45 THIS! This is why I HATED G1 toys as a kid. So glad I stayed on earth long enough for MP and 3P to rise as I finally am I able to get the toys I wanted in '86-'92.
😅 well....it was start :) and to be fair I believe the Sunstreaker toy was the first car robot made by Takara. They got progressively better with stuff like Jazz and the Datsun bros 👍👍👍
My very first Transformer was Sunstreaker, purchased by my mother. I've been a fan and collector since then, but I never reacquired a G1 version. Shortly before she died my mother made a note in her diary to buy one for me (we knew she was dying) but I didn't find it until she'd passed. She never did buy it for me though and it feels wrong to buy it for myself.
Toys linked to a loved one are so powerful. If you dont mind my opinion on this, you should go get one in her honor to fulfill what she intended to do :)

Maybe when I've dealt with her death (it wasn't so long ago) but for now doing it seems like admitting she won't. Which I know, but I want to avoid that finality perhaps. One day maybe I'll buy one for my son (who she narrowly missed meeting) and hand the legacy down.

Sunstreaker is like the Cartman of the Transformers universe, and his brother Sideswipe is always trying to keep up with him so that he doesn't get himself killed by either side or do something else stupid. It's a really interesting dynamic that I wish was explored more.
That's an analogy that never crossed my mind ha ha. But yeah, Sideswipe definitely plays an integral role in making sure his brother is tolerated by the Autobots :)
As a absolute Sunstreaker fan who has him at my top 3 of all the characters, i pray to god one day john hasbro will put him as one of the main protagonists in a new transformers show pls i need my boy in the spotlight so bad like atleast give him the same recognizability as Sideswipe??? Man I would LOVE to see a Sunstreaker in a new show too! Unfortunately nowadays if seems like most new shows use smaller casts with each member representing a color for easier visual identification fornthe kiddies. And unfortunately for Sunny, the "yellow" robot slot usually goes to Bee SMH 😔 but hoping against hope we'll still see him!
As a kid, I got Sunstreaker as a gift, my very first Transformer. He was immediately and always my favorite Transformer. As a kid, I didn't know what sociopathic meant, I just thought his vanity and badassery were a perfect combination. If I remember right, he shot down Thundercracker because the Decepticon scratched his finish. Classic. It was always disappointing how little attention he got.
Lucky you! I believe in the start he was basically just a vain egotist. The whole sociopathic tendencies bit was added by later modern writers. But I guess it would be a natural progression and logical assumption. Either way yes a lot of missed story telling opportunities there :)
You didn't talk much about Sunstreaker's durability, which rivaled Ironhide. That, plus his enormous beauty, plus him being a grade a jerk, was what made him my favorite. The toy never did its or me, but one day I'll save up and get that Masterpiece edition as my last Transformer. He was always my centerpiece character, despite the toy not carrying the weight. Thank you for this video, I loved it.

Another new Sunstreaker came out this year - the one based on concept art for the "Bumblebee" movie. Hopefully you were able to get him too, he's a pretty good deluxe and actually makes a nice interpretation for a Cybertronian, pre-Earth G1 Sunstreaker.
Yeah familiar with that but overall I'm not a big fan of the BB movie aesthetic but knowing me I will eventually get to him. Glad to hear that he's a good toy 👍 hopefully they'll release a Sideswipe counterpart!

Until this day, I still don't have any version of Sunstreaker, but he is an interesting character and I don't dislike him. I never had him as a child, so I never had any nostalgia-driven cravings for him, and there's other characters I'm more emotionally invested in like Hot Rod and Megatron. I think it's very cool to hear someone being a Sunstreaker fan since he's such an unexpected choice.
That bio kind of reminds me of John Cusack explaining why he left Minnie Driver on prom night in Grosse Point Blank. That he had a certain "moral flexibility" and hence was made for the assassin game. Would love to see an elseworlds type of story where Sunstreaker is a killer with a lack of conscience as it describes him on that bio.

For some reason I have never been able to put my finger on, that is my second fav movie after the TF animated. I never managed to find the SS model in the UK when I was younger. My favs were always Shrapnel and then Springer.

Thundercracker is my favorite Decepticon. Although the whole screenwriter plus dog character arc was kinda cheesy, I loved it! Made him one of the most memorable TFs of all time in my unbiased opinion.
I'm totally with you on the depth of the characters...Still my favourite version of the transformers.... As stated "More than meets the eye"!,now if they faithfully reproduced the originals as a live action movie they would have something special!.....

Funny how a moment of spite can make a lifelong favorite, just like how Raichu is my favorite Pokémon because Lt. Surge's was the first to really humble Ash's Pikachu. All things considered, this sounds right up Sunstreaker's alley.
Honestly, I'd love to see more the vain sociopath aspect of Sunstreaker in future media. We had a bit of it in Dreamwave, but otherwise they usually play his vanitiy up in favor of the less squeaky clean aspects of his personality. His IDW version was decent, but didn't really feel like the character if you ask me.
His vanity was what they really focused on in the original cartoon since they couldn't have a sociopath in a kids show I guess 😅 but yeah more vanity if it means more Sunstreaker for me :)
I love Sunstreaker with all my heart (as well as his brother), he's often the first 'bot I think of while engrossing in Transformers media. Subconsicously, he's taken the #1 spot for me, even though there are so many others I appreciate as well. Him and Transformers as a whole live rent-free in my mind. Really, it's wishful thinking to hope Hasbro will develop the characters individually and interpersonally (or, at least more than what has been done in the comics)--but in a way, the open-ended nature of Transformers brings about a whimsy that can be enjoyed by just about anyone willing to check the franchise out. That, and you're almost guaranteed to like at least one character since there's so many, even if some are near copies of one another.
That's the beauty of this franchise. Many characters with solid personality foundations from the original tech specs that have been built upon and developed through various media. There's always something new to discover and explore with almost every character .
Loved your Sunstreaker story! I did have a G1 Sunstreaker toy, he wasn't my favourite, but I did like him a lot! In recent years I bought the MP-39+ red spinout version, because I was late to the game on the original MP-39 Sunstreaker and wasn't willing to pay crazy eBay prices for him. Spinout is fantastic!! However last year I was lucky to snag an actual MP-39 Sunstreaker from an online friend who was selling him!

OK I concede, Skids has the unfortunate distinction as being the most overlooked G1 Autobot. Poor guy. I do remember that one comicbook arc that featured him though...not the details, but I do remember enjoying it and his character :)

Sunstreaker’s my top bot in one of my Transformers: Forged to Fight accounts. I got his rank, level, forge level, and signature ability completely maxed. He’s awesome.
Vanity and narcissism are two different things. That is what would make their interaction so cool. Tracks thinks his good looking and his obsessed with keeping that appearance up, Sunstreaker knows he looks good but uses other people to bolster that image thru malicious means.
In one of the comics, him and Tracks are boyfriends and I find that to simultaneously be a match made in Heaven and something that would drive the other Autobots up a wall

Sunstreaker was my first Transformer ever and thus has a special place in my heart. And of course Sunstreaker is my favorite Autobot. His bio card completely fascinated me. A warrior that’s one of the best at what he does and is so good that his peers are willing to pardon his sociopathic behavior and distasteful personality. The Autobot anti-hero.
One of my first transformers back in the day. Unfortunately when I got him I had a habit of taking all my toys apart but didn't have the experience to put them back together so he had some issues. Even more unfortunately he and most of my other transformers and a lot of other toys were sold out from under me at a garage sale while I was out of state. Some day I might forgive my parents for that.

@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf G1 sideswipe was chill, it was his later variants when he was the black lambo always trying to outdo Sunstreaker, but how do you outdo someone that will execute a killorder proficiently and without remorse. Sideswipe’s flash was just to urk Sunstreaker, and it was Sunstreaker’s rules that he bent alot.
Never really got to know Sunstreaker as a robot personality, but he's always looked so damn cool, and I always like his robot apperance and of course the alt-mode too (which is superb). Since I never really got into the G1 scene (too young and too few shops where I lived and I had several expensive interests as a kid, so Transformers had much competition in my world), it wasn't until Earthrise that I actually got a Sunstreaker toy. Now with the new Legacy version being released, with better color matching and a not-fragile windscreen, I'll probably switch my models around. Masterpiece scale and third party toys are just way too expensive for me, since I want to get so many robots. I'd rather have more robots than fewer that are bigger and look better.
I'm torn between keeping my Earthrise or switching to the new Legacy one. Even if its more fragile , I really prefer the transparent windshield....but man I need that earth mode Hound! 😅
Even as a kid, when I was reading his bio that "sociopathic tendencies" made me do a triple take... But I guess if you're a war with maniacs and psychos - you miiiiiiight want to have at least one - on your side.
I always wanted Sunstreaker as a kid, I was meant to get him for Christmas in 85, but he had sold out, I used the money I got to get Ramjet instead. I luckily got the prerub one a few years ago sealed AFA 80. Hope I can get a sealed Sideswipe one day.
Ramjet was the only conehead I got as a kid, so as a result he's my favorite of the trio. I mean he's a jet, that rams other jets! What's not ti like? 😅
So when I was a kid, of my squad of Autobots, Sunny was probably one of the two most often killed if their were casualties while playing. Not cause I disliked him, just cause I figured he'd be in the thickest part of the fighting in the most danger. (This is why Ironhide and Cliffjumper also 'died' a lot.)
As an 80s kid, I liked Sunstreaker’s toy because his head looked like an Egyptian pharaoh headdress, and I was really into Egyptian lore at the time, what with the touring exhibit of King Tut’s treasures.
Exhausts, LOL. They are actually intakes. One thing that's cool about sunstreaker is that in vehicle mode he's pretty much laid back in the relaxation pose.

I actually love Starscream first in G1 from when I was kid but never could get my own TFs. My much younger brother got few. One was Sunstreaker. I have him but for many years he was missing his fists and weapons. Was able to get one of his fists and one missile. He and Sideswipe become my faves later and I have nice collection of both of them together with the recolors. I do remember how excited I was to get Universe Sideswipe and Sunstreaker that it was unreal. THat was the most excited ever to finally have them in hand.
The parts forming for Sunstreaker and the jets were really the worst part of this toys IMHO. Other than that I think that Sunstreaker had a twin brother worked in favor for both of them as you HAD to have both :)
'Streaker was my 1st Transformer. His mold was one of the Japanese molds. Still had the spring action in the arms. Also had metal parts, Japanese stamping on the mold, and rubber tires.

While not my favorite Autobot car, that honor goes to Wheeljack, Sunstreaker is still pretty high on the list for just how unique he looks, and his personality is rather great as well since he's not the typical good guy, which leads to more interesting stories that can be told.
As a kid I wasn't that big a fan of wheeljack, but as an adult I've learned to appreciate his character as the mad scientist of the original crew :) and of course...he made the dinobots!
I think Sunstreaker is the guy who was a Jock, full of himself yet was not a guy minded to be a Bully. In High School during my first year, my Protector was a 7th form all-rounder Sportsman who was hated/envied by many other students coz he had the hottest girlfriend, the coolest car & couldn't be beaten at anything sportswise. He said to me that he thought the Strong should only fight the Strong. Sunstreaker fights the Deceptikonz not so much coz he's a Good Guy but because even though he's a Dick ...he's not a Prick like the Deceptikonz.
That's a nice way to look at it. Reminds me a bit of a personality bit I read about the Dinobot Grimlock...something to the effect that even if he doesn't like the weak, he hates bullies more....
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Haha, that's something that always bothered me as a kid. I loved Starscream but would always be under scrutiny of my friends, because they saw him as a buffoon. Due to all of his coup attempts failing spectacularly. In a fashion akin to Charlie Brown and the football. Whereas I saw him as a very capable commander who could actually overthrow Megatron quite easily. If only he had a plan first. Instead of seeing Megatron getting his backside handed to him and thinking "NOW is my time!" Which... was definitely a very difficult argument to make as kids, when our only exposure to the character, were his oppoutinistic attempts.
@AnthonySforza well then original series was a bit more simplistic so as a result many characters were pretty much one note. I believe Starscream among others got hisnwell deserved development in later shows and comics :)
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf That... is heart warming. I started to get into the comics during the whole Energon series, but admittedly kept forgetting they were coming out every month. I know, seems like a no brainer, but I had a lot of things going on in life, at the time and before I knew it, six months went by in the blink of an eye. That said, it seemed like a reboot, more than a continuation of the series or anything. Where I recall Starscream was kind of... not quiet, but he wasnt as outspoken and erratic as he was originally. Though when he did say something, he had some jabs in there. Anything beyond that and I couldnt tell you.
@@AnthonySforza I never read the Energon series as it came out at a time when I wasn't quite into collecting toys or reading comics as an adult. But I heard his depiction there was interesting. My favorite iterations of Starscream were in the Prime series, where his treachery was taken to new levels - he literally kills Cliffjumper in the first episode - and the IDW Comics where he actually ends up being the supreme leader of all the Transformers....It's been a while so the details are sketchy but I remember it being a long drawn out and convoluted story involving a Titan randomly annointing Starscream as the "chosen one" and Starscream being "haunted/advised" by visions of a dead Bumblebee 😅

The universe must've orchestrated something, cause sunstreaker and your first transformer, thunderceacker are really similar just mirrored(is that the word?) One's an autobot with without the heroics of one, and thunderceacker is a decepticon without the con tendencies Like thunderceacker is only a decepticon because he has nothing else to do In IDW sunstreaker, from the faction that's meant to save humanity, is the one to sell out humanity And meanwhile also in IDW thunderceacker, from the faction that wants to enslave humanity, is the one to save humans from a nuke Oh and also in IDW both end up with a pet that theyblove Also yeah idk why but the Lambo twins(I don't personally get how they're called twins but starscream,thunderceacker and skywatp aren't triplets) have probably some of the best designs in the franchise
Yeah it's amazing the parallel or better opposite turns both my favorite Autobot and Decepticon take....and how they both ended up with pets ha ha. While you could argue that these were just more modern takes on the characters...the seeds were planted from the very start in the tech specs which is why I love most of the stuff IDW did with the brand. And as for the seekers, I LOVE their design. Very iconic along with the Datsun bros for the Autobots:) I jokingly call myself a seeker whore-der since I'll buy almost ANY iteration of the three main seekers I see anywhere 😅
Those were intake coolers, not backwards exhaust. The engine on that car is in the rear. It's like on a normal car with a front engine and hood intake, just moved to the back.
G1 Sunstreaker was one of my first 5 Transformers collected. I still have mine, though the pin holding a wheel on broke so now that wheel is permanently glued on and won't roll. I haven't gotten any other 'streaker toys but I'm hoping to get the new multi-pack. I hope you told your friend about all the crap Sunstreaker went through and survived and that Sideswipe was the one to actually die. That would certainly further lay to bed that childhood argument.
Guilty 😔 I never read the UK stuff. Anything interesting happen to him there? I read Dreamwave and I know he tangled with the insecticons....but it's been awhile. I think DW went down before any real major storylines could really develop. Just my opinion 👍

As a fellow Sunstreaker fanboy, I approve of this video. In the Dreamwave comics, Sunstreaker was also said to be a pit-fighter and mural artist. A narcissistic artist with a murderous side? Yes! Yes! Yes!

The funny thing about the Autobots is that most of their bios are like this. Budiansky seemed to have really wanted you to get the idea that the Autobots were as bad as the Decepticons and the one making the difference and keeping them good enough to be the good guys was Optimus.
Yes he did a fantastic job in making so many characters really nuanced on both sides. Like not all autobots wanted to stay on earth. Also not Al Decepticons were intrinsically evil. Like my favorite, thundercracker who only joined the Decpticons out of fear of Megatron.
Hopefully the new comic can showcase these nuances character wise. Sunstreaker being a straight murder adds so dimension to his character as a Autobot.

Sunstreaker was my first transformer. I saved up my allowance and bought him in 84. I read all the bios of all the toys and thought his was the best, as a kid i really liked how he seemed morally grey as opposed to all the other figures. And i liked that his arms bent at the elbow.
You can't beat the best! So envious that you got to get Sunny from the start! Yes he really stood out in both. Visual appeal and character :)

Sideswipe's and Sunstreaker's bios were accidently switched on release. Sunstreaker thought Sideswipe's vehicle mode was ruined by having that exposed rear engine which Sunstreaker has.
Yup! Part of the interesting history these two guys share...including Sunstreaker originally being red and Sideswipe yellow in the diaclone line :)
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Which is why Sunstreaker has his somewhat iconic red shoulders, that nearly every version tries to recreate or homage. They were stickers for the Red Version "Spinout" to give him a red bumper, and they just never changed those to yellow.
I think that detail of red is so oftentimes underaporeciated. That and the black stripe on the sides sides of the car. It's small color details like these that break up all the red and makes sunstreaker even cooler in my eyes :)
Yeah, I do like Sunstreaker, but I wouldn't mind seeing the personalities swapped to the original character- Even "Sideswipe" sounds like something a dirty fighter like Sunstreaker would do.

Loved that moment in the IDW comic where the other Autobots discover that not only has Sunstreaker been resurrected, but Ironhide as well. They're all overjoyed to see Ironhide, but they just treat Sunstreaker with cold indifference. Ouch!

It's a shame we had seen very little of Sunstreaker in the G1 cartoon and comic book and he was petty much ignored for a long time. It'd be interesting to see how he interacted with other Autobots but the episode plots were watered down and production rushed plus there were quite a lot of characters to deal with so those Autobots with more interesting personalities, quirks and histories were pushed aside, plus Hasbro said to keep Bumblebee, Ironhide at the forefront because those toys sold the least. I liked Sideswipe but he was made a very much a background character, sadly.
They had to juggle a huge cast of characters and invetably some would fall thru the cracks. And ultimately this was a kids show so the resident a-hole wasn't high on their top priorities to feature. Oh well still a missed opportunity...

I love sunstreaker, he’s such an asshole! His personality is far more suited for a Stunticon but the Bots keep him around because he’s so good at what he does. It’s reminiscent of why Megs keeps Starscream around (altho we never really see Screamer shine like we do with Streaker). We need more bad boys on the Bots. Streaker and Grimlock can’t have all the fun.

@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf It's a weird quirk, but a lot of the OG Transformers kind of had a superiority complex when it came to "lesser" beings... and... it's not a defining trait of Decepticons. Autobots are just less likely, but it's not even something fully thrown out in more modern stuff.

Sunstreaker's vent thingys are based on a real-world modification some Lamborghinis have. Also what Sideswipe's jetpack was inspired by before the nameswap.

I had the red diaclone as a kid (and the black ironhide), so I'm all about the 'spinout' recolors. I haven't seen it mentioned, but he was the first car-to-robot transformer ever produced. I'd love to see him included as a 'missing link' like the upcoming Optimus, with improved articulation.
Yup! I completely forgot to mention that he was the first, which would most likely explain his wonky proportions. I also heard that the original molds have been lost which would explain the lack of original Sunstreaker toy reissues? And yes I agree with you, a missing link Sunny would be awesome, although that might open up a new collecting rabbit hole to fall into 😂
1:45 THIS! This is why I HATED G1 toys as a kid. So glad I stayed on earth long enough for MP and 3P to rise as I finally am I able to get the toys I wanted in '86-'92.
😅 well....it was start :) and to be fair I believe the Sunstreaker toy was the first car robot made by Takara. They got progressively better with stuff like Jazz and the Datsun bros 👍👍👍
My very first Transformer was Sunstreaker, purchased by my mother. I've been a fan and collector since then, but I never reacquired a G1 version. Shortly before she died my mother made a note in her diary to buy one for me (we knew she was dying) but I didn't find it until she'd passed. She never did buy it for me though and it feels wrong to buy it for myself.
Toys linked to a loved one are so powerful. If you dont mind my opinion on this, you should go get one in her honor to fulfill what she intended to do :)

Maybe when I've dealt with her death (it wasn't so long ago) but for now doing it seems like admitting she won't. Which I know, but I want to avoid that finality perhaps. One day maybe I'll buy one for my son (who she narrowly missed meeting) and hand the legacy down.

Sunstreaker is like the Cartman of the Transformers universe, and his brother Sideswipe is always trying to keep up with him so that he doesn't get himself killed by either side or do something else stupid. It's a really interesting dynamic that I wish was explored more.
That's an analogy that never crossed my mind ha ha. But yeah, Sideswipe definitely plays an integral role in making sure his brother is tolerated by the Autobots :)
As a absolute Sunstreaker fan who has him at my top 3 of all the characters, i pray to god one day john hasbro will put him as one of the main protagonists in a new transformers show pls i need my boy in the spotlight so bad like atleast give him the same recognizability as Sideswipe??? Man I would LOVE to see a Sunstreaker in a new show too! Unfortunately nowadays if seems like most new shows use smaller casts with each member representing a color for easier visual identification fornthe kiddies. And unfortunately for Sunny, the "yellow" robot slot usually goes to Bee SMH 😔 but hoping against hope we'll still see him!

As a kid, I got Sunstreaker as a gift, my very first Transformer. He was immediately and always my favorite Transformer. As a kid, I didn't know what sociopathic meant, I just thought his vanity and badassery were a perfect combination. If I remember right, he shot down Thundercracker because the Decepticon scratched his finish. Classic. It was always disappointing how little attention he got.
Lucky you! I believe in the start he was basically just a vain egotist. The whole sociopathic tendencies bit was added by later modern writers. But I guess it would be a natural progression and logical assumption. Either way yes a lot of missed story telling opportunities there :)
You didn't talk much about Sunstreaker's durability, which rivaled Ironhide. That, plus his enormous beauty, plus him being a grade a jerk, was what made him my favorite. The toy never did its or me, but one day I'll save up and get that Masterpiece edition as my last Transformer. He was always my centerpiece character, despite the toy not carrying the weight. Thank you for this video, I loved it.

Another new Sunstreaker came out this year - the one based on concept art for the "Bumblebee" movie. Hopefully you were able to get him too, he's a pretty good deluxe and actually makes a nice interpretation for a Cybertronian, pre-Earth G1 Sunstreaker.

Until this day, I still don't have any version of Sunstreaker, but he is an interesting character and I don't dislike him. I never had him as a child, so I never had any nostalgia-driven cravings for him, and there's other characters I'm more emotionally invested in like Hot Rod and Megatron. I think it's very cool to hear someone being a Sunstreaker fan since he's such an unexpected choice.
Earlier on, Sunstreaker was definitely overshadowed by most of his fellow Autobots...but I think he's gained a few more fans since then :)

That bio kind of reminds me of John Cusack explaining why he left Minnie Driver on prom night in Grosse Point Blank. That he had a certain "moral flexibility" and hence was made for the assassin game. Would love to see an elseworlds type of story where Sunstreaker is a killer with a lack of conscience as it describes him on that bio.

For some reason I have never been able to put my finger on, that is my second fav movie after the TF animated. I never managed to find the SS model in the UK when I was younger. My favs were always Shrapnel and then Springer.

Thundercracker is my favorite Decepticon. Although the whole screenwriter plus dog character arc was kinda cheesy, I loved it! Made him one of the most memorable TFs of all time in my unbiased opinion.

Honestly, I'd love to see more the vain sociopath aspect of Sunstreaker in future media. We had a bit of it in Dreamwave, but otherwise they usually play his vanitiy up in favor of the less squeaky clean aspects of his personality. His IDW version was decent, but didn't really feel like the character if you ask me.
His vanity was what they really focused on in the original cartoon since they couldn't have a sociopath in a kids show I guess 😅 but yeah more vanity if it means more Sunstreaker for me :)

I love Sunstreaker with all my heart (as well as his brother), he's often the first 'bot I think of while engrossing in Transformers media. Subconsicously, he's taken the #1 spot for me, even though there are so many others I appreciate as well. Him and Transformers as a whole live rent-free in my mind.
Really, it's wishful thinking to hope Hasbro will develop the characters individually and interpersonally (or, at least more than what has been done in the comics)--but in a way, the open-ended nature of Transformers brings about a whimsy that can be enjoyed by just about anyone willing to check the franchise out. That, and you're almost guaranteed to like at least one character since there's so many, even if some are near copies of one another.
That's the beauty of this franchise. Many characters with solid personality foundations from the original tech specs that have been built upon and developed through various media. There's always something new to discover and explore with almost every character .

Loved your Sunstreaker story! I did have a G1 Sunstreaker toy, he wasn't my favourite, but I did like him a lot! In recent years I bought the MP-39+ red spinout version, because I was late to the game on the original MP-39 Sunstreaker and wasn't willing to pay crazy eBay prices for him. Spinout is fantastic!! However last year I was lucky to snag an actual MP-39 Sunstreaker from an online friend who was selling him!

Actually, my favorite Transformer only got focus on one comicbook, and otherwise, is widely ignored. Skids. He was a blue minivan.
OK I concede, Skids has the unfortunate distinction as being the most overlooked G1 Autobot. Poor guy. I do remember that one comicbook arc that featured him though...not the details, but I do remember enjoying it and his character :)

Vanity and narcissism are two different things. That is what would make their interaction so cool. Tracks thinks his good looking and his obsessed with keeping that appearance up, Sunstreaker knows he looks good but uses other people to bolster that image thru malicious means.
In one of the comics, him and Tracks are boyfriends and I find that to simultaneously be a match made in Heaven and something that would drive the other Autobots up a wall

Sunstreaker was my first Transformer ever and thus has a special place in my heart. And of course Sunstreaker is my favorite Autobot. His bio card completely fascinated me. A warrior that’s one of the best at what he does and is so good that his peers are willing to pardon his sociopathic behavior and distasteful personality. The Autobot anti-hero.

One of my first transformers back in the day. Unfortunately when I got him I had a habit of taking all my toys apart but didn't have the experience to put them back together so he had some issues. Even more unfortunately he and most of my other transformers and a lot of other toys were sold out from under me at a garage sale while I was out of state. Some day I might forgive my parents for that.

@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf G1 sideswipe was chill, it was his later variants when he was the black lambo always trying to outdo Sunstreaker, but how do you outdo someone that will execute a killorder proficiently and without remorse. Sideswipe’s flash was just to urk Sunstreaker, and it was Sunstreaker’s rules that he bent alot.
Never really got to know Sunstreaker as a robot personality, but he's always looked so damn cool, and I always like his robot apperance and of course the alt-mode too (which is superb). Since I never really got into the G1 scene (too young and too few shops where I lived and I had several expensive interests as a kid, so Transformers had much competition in my world), it wasn't until Earthrise that I actually got a Sunstreaker toy. Now with the new Legacy version being released, with better color matching and a not-fragile windscreen, I'll probably switch my models around. Masterpiece scale and third party toys are just way too expensive for me, since I want to get so many robots. I'd rather have more robots than fewer that are bigger and look better.
I'm torn between keeping my Earthrise or switching to the new Legacy one. Even if its more fragile , I really prefer the transparent windshield....but man I need that earth mode Hound! 😅

I always wanted Sunstreaker as a kid, I was meant to get him for Christmas in 85, but he had sold out, I used the money I got to get Ramjet instead.
I luckily got the prerub one a few years ago sealed AFA 80.
Hope I can get a sealed Sideswipe one day.
Ramjet was the only conehead I got as a kid, so as a result he's my favorite of the trio. I mean he's a jet, that rams other jets! What's not ti like? 😅

So when I was a kid, of my squad of Autobots, Sunny was probably one of the two most often killed if their were casualties while playing. Not cause I disliked him, just cause I figured he'd be in the thickest part of the fighting in the most danger. (This is why Ironhide and Cliffjumper also 'died' a lot.)

As an 80s kid, I liked Sunstreaker’s toy because his head looked like an Egyptian pharaoh headdress, and I was really into Egyptian lore at the time, what with the touring exhibit of King Tut’s treasures.
You know that never occurred to me. Interesting :) for me it was always Mirage's head thatxsturck me as Egyptian looking. But cool nonetheless!

I actually love Starscream first in G1 from when I was kid but never could get my own TFs. My much younger brother got few. One was Sunstreaker. I have him but for many years he was missing his fists and weapons. Was able to get one of his fists and one missile. He and Sideswipe become my faves later and I have nice collection of both of them together with the recolors. I do remember how excited I was to get Universe Sideswipe and Sunstreaker that it was unreal. THat was the most excited ever to finally have them in hand.
The parts forming for Sunstreaker and the jets were really the worst part of this toys IMHO. Other than that I think that Sunstreaker had a twin brother worked in favor for both of them as you HAD to have both :)

'Streaker was my 1st Transformer. His mold was one of the Japanese molds. Still had the spring action in the arms. Also had metal parts, Japanese stamping on the mold, and rubber tires.

They dont want him to go Con, so they tolerate alot of bad behavior. Sideswipe, imo, is the only thing keeping Suntreaker an Autobot.
He would make a dangerous Con. Imagine if anything happened to Swipe!

While not my favorite Autobot car, that honor goes to Wheeljack, Sunstreaker is still pretty high on the list for just how unique he looks, and his personality is rather great as well since he's not the typical good guy, which leads to more interesting stories that can be told.
As a kid I wasn't that big a fan of wheeljack, but as an adult I've learned to appreciate his character as the mad scientist of the original crew :) and of course...he made the dinobots!

I think Sunstreaker is the guy who was a Jock, full of himself yet was not a guy minded to be a Bully. In High School during my first year, my Protector was a 7th form all-rounder Sportsman who was hated/envied by many other students coz he had the hottest girlfriend, the coolest car & couldn't be beaten at anything sportswise. He said to me that he thought the Strong should only fight the Strong. Sunstreaker fights the Deceptikonz not so much coz he's a Good Guy but because even though he's a Dick ...he's not a Prick like the Deceptikonz.
That's a nice way to look at it. Reminds me a bit of a personality bit I read about the Dinobot Grimlock...something to the effect that even if he doesn't like the weak, he hates bullies more....

Haha, that's something that always bothered me as a kid. I loved Starscream but would always be under scrutiny of my friends, because they saw him as a buffoon. Due to all of his coup attempts failing spectacularly. In a fashion akin to Charlie Brown and the football.
Whereas I saw him as a very capable commander who could actually overthrow Megatron quite easily. If only he had a plan first. Instead of seeing Megatron getting his backside handed to him and thinking "NOW is my time!" Which... was definitely a very difficult argument to make as kids, when our only exposure to the character, were his oppoutinistic attempts.
@AnthonySforza well then original series was a bit more simplistic so as a result many characters were pretty much one note. I believe Starscream among others got hisnwell deserved development in later shows and comics :)

That... is heart warming. I started to get into the comics during the whole Energon series, but admittedly kept forgetting they were coming out every month. I know, seems like a no brainer, but I had a lot of things going on in life, at the time and before I knew it, six months went by in the blink of an eye.
That said, it seemed like a reboot, more than a continuation of the series or anything. Where I recall Starscream was kind of... not quiet, but he wasnt as outspoken and erratic as he was originally. Though when he did say something, he had some jabs in there. Anything beyond that and I couldnt tell you.
@@AnthonySforza I never read the Energon series as it came out at a time when I wasn't quite into collecting toys or reading comics as an adult. But I heard his depiction there was interesting. My favorite iterations of Starscream were in the Prime series, where his treachery was taken to new levels - he literally kills Cliffjumper in the first episode - and the IDW Comics where he actually ends up being the supreme leader of all the Transformers....It's been a while so the details are sketchy but I remember it being a long drawn out and convoluted story involving a Titan randomly annointing Starscream as the "chosen one" and Starscream being "haunted/advised" by visions of a dead Bumblebee 😅

Sunstreaker was one of my first Transformers. I remember i was so bad when I opened him up and he did not come with a gun just 3 missles.

Those are the air intakes for the mid-mounted engine. Sideswipe/Red Alert/Breakdown etc also have the intakes, but they're in the C-pillar. See: 15:40

One's an autobot with without the heroics of one, and thunderceacker is a decepticon without the con tendencies
Like thunderceacker is only a decepticon because he has nothing else to do
In IDW sunstreaker, from the faction that's meant to save humanity, is the one to sell out humanity
And meanwhile also in IDW thunderceacker, from the faction that wants to enslave humanity, is the one to save humans from a nuke
Oh and also in IDW both end up with a pet that theyblove
Also yeah idk why but the Lambo twins(I don't personally get how they're called twins but starscream,thunderceacker and skywatp aren't triplets) have probably some of the best designs in the franchise
Yeah it's amazing the parallel or better opposite turns both my favorite Autobot and Decepticon take....and how they both ended up with pets ha ha. While you could argue that these were just more modern takes on the characters...the seeds were planted from the very start in the tech specs which is why I love most of the stuff IDW did with the brand.
And as for the seekers, I LOVE their design. Very iconic along with the Datsun bros for the Autobots:) I jokingly call myself a seeker whore-der since I'll buy almost ANY iteration of the three main seekers I see anywhere 😅
Sideswipe was written as a bit of a psycho too. Both of them were fairly screwed up.
He had to be, to get along with his brother :) he just had a little more finesse
Those were intake coolers, not backwards exhaust. The engine on that car is in the rear. It's like on a normal car with a front engine and hood intake, just moved to the back.

G1 Sunstreaker was one of my first 5 Transformers collected. I still have mine, though the pin holding a wheel on broke so now that wheel is permanently glued on and won't roll. I haven't gotten any other 'streaker toys but I'm hoping to get the new multi-pack.
I hope you told your friend about all the crap Sunstreaker went through and survived and that Sideswipe was the one to actually die. That would certainly further lay to bed that childhood argument.
That was a really touching issue when Swipe died. I haven't seen my friend for years but when I do ill be sure to tell him 😅

Guilty 😔 I never read the UK stuff. Anything interesting happen to him there? I read Dreamwave and I know he tangled with the insecticons....but it's been awhile. I think DW went down before any real major storylines could really develop. Just my opinion 👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf What comes to my mind is a story in the later part of the run where he is spotlighted for ruthlessly getting some humans in trouble. (I looked it up-it is issue 257 and it shows how vain, and ruthless Sunstreaker is)
