That's awesome that you still have your original shockwave! And the fact that it still works is even more amazing! You're right on Siege Shockwave, definitely the closest to the original IMHO 👍👍👍
I've always been into the fact that when Hasbro first imported Shockwave, they did not have exclusive rights to the mold, and so you'd see him different places, like the Gray "Galactic Man" version that Radio Shack sold that the fandom nicknamed Shackwave. Two toys with that gray with clear plastic deco were used as set dressing in the movie Aliens, hung upsidedown in gunborg configuration to look like scientific equipment in the lab where Bishop was studying the dead facehuggers.
Yeah I heard about that! Although didn't "shackwave" officially become a Transformer later on? Like they released a toy in the Generation selects line?
@robotkyle71 OK so still shockwave in a different flavor 😅 I wouldn't put it past shockwave to create a clone of himself because logically two shockwaves would be better than one 😅
in the Script for season 3 five part Five Faces of Darkness Shockwave was said to have a speaking line where he was said to be around when Cybertron was first build that is why his model looks the way it does in cartoon he was one of the first transformers and remember who the Quintessons where they changed it because Shockwave was said to have died in the movie but it was near added so they changed to Blitzwing kind of remembering them what is weird
Having Shockwave being around during the quintessons is a cool take to explain his different look :) yeah I heard he was supposedly killed off in the movie at the end by Unicron. But you know what they say...no body, no death. 😅
I also like how they hinted through his design that he's very, very old. He seems to come from the crop of Cybertronians that lived under the whip of the Q's. They all had a very specific look and didn't start to really differentiate themselves until much later. My guess is that had he not been written out he knew EXACTLY what was going on during the 'Five Faces' arc and that's why he would have flipped to the Autobot side. Also, he kinda saved Cybertron at the end. Without his warning the damage to the entire planet could have been far more significant. While he lived as a menace he died as a hero.
I would think it would be the opposite. Senator Shockwave starting out very emotional to being emotionless. Not an expert on two face but I'd imagine Harvey Dent to be very straightforward and level headed. While two face the opposite and very chaotic?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Harvey Dent was indeed a level-headed and intelligent man, but he also had a form of MPD. The second personality went by the name Big Bad Harv and was just as intelligent, but a lot more aggressive, violent, and short-tempered. The accident that created Two-Face merged the two, with Big Bad Harv coming out as the more dominant side of his personality. I wouldn't compare him and Shockwave, honestly. No Batman villain has quite the mentality of Shockwave. Ra'as al Ghul is the closest human villain and he still isn't very similar. The actual closest is HARDAC, but HARDAC is more of, like... Film Noir HAL-9000.
I really enjoyed Prime's Shockwave, he acted as a fantastic antagonist and lieutenant for Megatron. But Animated as a whole has a lot of importance to me, and I can't deny Spy Shockwave was a neat take on the character.
Every major iteration of Sjockwave added something unique to the character, which I find really cool. Even the waste of a character in DOTM at least had a gigantic worm companion which was unique ha ha. For me though it'll always be the original Marvel Shockwave since it was the first to portray Shockwave as more than a loyal lackey who was left behind on Cybertron.
As a kid, I watched the cartoon, and by the time I got into comics and was getting them once a week off a spinning rack, Marvel was running G2, and I was a huge Superman mark. So I liked my Shockwave as the goofy punchline. But I totally understand why people dig him as much. I just don't but he does look badass.
It's been years since I read the original Marvel run, but that issue wherein he defeats Megatron firmly established him to me as one of the deadliest and most powerful Decepticons. That being said, he was first portrayed as that...harmless Decepticon who pretty much did nothing but get left behind in the cartoon...so your perception of him is totally understandable too 👍
My biggest problem with Transformers was how they always had to have human faces. Bumblebee & Optimus had awesome robot faces but they had to be changed into "battle masks". Wheeljack was my favorite Autobot because of the original toy & box artwork. He had the best face out of all of them. But the cartoon ruined it. They just had to add human eyes & a nose. Why can't Shockwave's head just be Shockwave's head? He's a fucking *ROBOT!!!* Cybertronians are not humans. Why do they always have to give the Transformers human faces? The cartoon ruined most of the awesome toys. Pretty much every G1 toy that had a cool robot face was given a human face in the cartoon. That has always pissed me off! Now I can't even get any of the characters with their original heads. I'd like to buy the new Brawn & Gears but I HATE the cartoon faces.
I get your frustration and yes I agree as robots not even made by humans it doesn't make any sense. But for me I figure that it started as a royline and cartoon made for kids and adding faces just naturally made them more relatable to kids? I dunno that's how saw it. Shockwave being visually different just made him more unique and provided an opportunity to tell a great story about how he got that way...which I think IDW did very well. Now what I can't stand though is when they have Optimus Prime without a face shield. 😅
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf It didn't make them more relatable. Most of the coolest ones didn't have human faces and the most popular ones had the strange faces like optimous prime and grimlock and tryptocon. The idea of making them look and act more human in the movie also preceded the absolute worst and most hated transformers lineup ever. Being beaten out by the nonsense of hte action masters and pretenders.
@incognit01233 let's agree to disagree as face or no face is more of a subjective thing anyway. While I can agree that face shields and battle masks do look cooler for robots...I myself don't have that much of a strong dislike for robot faces. What matters more to me is characters and personalities which most TF iterations have in spades. Although i agree actionmasters suck 😅
Meanwhile, in another thumbnail: This A-Team's Face lost his Decepticon and probably all his animal friends in space and maybe his off screen singer girlfriend after a period of time and the exclusive rights to fly jet planes to artifical intelligence and then that one time in Vegas-
Yeah the Marvel run was pretty good considering they had to shoehorn new characters almost every other issue. I found it amusing at how they made an insignificant soundwave minion in Ratbat end up actually leading the Decepticons at one point!
To me he is an older more ancient transformer who later joined the decepticons and because he is so logical and calculating he did not need a face for emoting. When i was a kid the idea transformers that lived indefinitely and had evolved rmotional traits in their own unique ways dictating their faces and features was just an automatic response from my imagination to explain what i was seeing. I could not afford comics or anything and all my lore is from the show and talking about it. Thats why 9/10 times you do a reboot you trash someones cherished childhood memories.
That is a very interesting take on Transformers origins. I like it :) and yes every new iteration does usually come with a new story, but i dont think that doesn't mean our childhood memories are trashed. As long as we hold on to them I think we're good :)
Nice vid. As a kid, I always wondered how a Shockwave toy that wasn't "Shockwave" could be sold, but I enjoyed mine anyway. Mine lit up & had a laser sound effect, but I think they all did in the '80's. I like the quirky visuals.
Thank you! I never had Shockwave as a kid but I did have a bunch of Japanese Diaclone robots so having "transformers" that weren't really Transformers was normal for me 😅 anyway glad you liked the visuals! And hope you come back for more :)
Interesting. He has been released in varying shades of purple and blue over the years...or wascthat one of the original ones that shockwave was based on?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I remember that it didn't have any stickers so my dad put one of Skywarps on his chest so it was definitely possible. I'm 50 now so you can imagine the memories may be a tad hazy
Shockwave was always one of my favs. I had 2 of the original toys as a kid...but they were VERY cheaply made....but they cost $30 in the 80s...that's a chunk of money. They always split down the seam in the middle. My favorite depiction was movie Shockwave...but they did him dirty.
Sorry to hear about your toys! I never actually had him as a kid so no first hand experience for me. As for movie Shockwave, yes he did look awesome. Unfortunately he was morenof the rule than the exception, the Bayverse pretty mcu did every TF character dirty. But I. Agree, even that giant worm couldn't make up for Shockwaves mis use...or is that no use in the movie.
How Shockwave in the Bay transformers movie was handled makes me wonder if him not being in the movie much, not talking much, and not transforming was a budget reason. All the Bay transformers movies are just a commercial to sell more toys. Yeah, the 86 movie did the same but at least that had an enjoyable story. When I saw Shockwave on the big screen, I was thinking the transformers could really do something with his character and really see him transform into something like a railgun that resembled Megatron's gun mode from the g1 cartoon series as a homage. In fact, I was hoping we saw him scanning the same military ship railgun that was shown in revenge of the fallen. And speaking of Megatron, was there ever a reason how and why Megatron kept getting new vehicle modes, and reversed back from Galvatron in the movies?
Yeah Like almost every TF character in the Bayverse, Shockwave was sorely underused. Although while I can't confirm it, it seems that this was on purpose as they wanted him to play the part of a red herring to hide the fact that the true villain was Sentinel Prime. Sucks that it happened to Shockwave though. But they could've put more effort into him either way. The non transforming bit may have been budgetary since unlike the cars who paid to have them featured, no one would probably be paying for whatever Shockwave would've transformed into....
Shockwave from the show's bible from the 1980s was damaged in war, not turned into a coldhearted logical scientist. He was pals with Skyfire and Starscream and the seekers. He already was kind of insane. The female autobots had damaged him, which is why he was angry at them in the stories they appeared. Having a similar gun mode to Megatron, but more ray gun like, based on Laser Man. The IDW story sounds more like Sentinel then it does Shockwave. As one of the descendants of Omnicus Prime, he has the power of combination and can create new Transformers. Marvel comics were infamous for making covers that didn't happen in the comic. I had them as a teenager back in the 80s. His loyalty to Megatron is only part of his plan, although he does rule OG Cybertron for millions of years.
As for the comic covers yeah but I don't think that was exclusive to Marvel...I think most comic companies are guilty of using that tactic. It's like UA-cam thumbnails today...you gotta compete with so many others that you need to visually hook your readers/viewers from the very start :)
Well he's not my favorite as a character but as a G1 toy, him and Jetfire are definitely among my favorites. Especially after accidentally breaking my Megatron as soon as I got him out of the packaging.Learned a valuable lesson that day.... ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS MANUAL 😅
Shockwave was definitely a better toy than Megatron :) and Jetfire was really a level above all the rest! I was lucky that he was one of my first Transformers toys. Talk about starting thingsboff at a high bar 😅 and yes reading instructions is a good idea 😅
@mauricehooks320 thatsbannice way ro put it 😅 he was still one of the best characters developed in IDW. Considering he was pretty much nothing before. Will definitely do a story of him one if these days :)

@mauricehooks320 funniest and most memorable....although Swerve iss pretty much up there too. That's what I loved about IDW, although some masy say their stories got too convoluted and confusing towards the end, I really loved how the reinvented and redeveloped formerly underutilised characters and made them fan favorites :)
As much as I love the Megatron loyalist Shockwave, I think I prefer him more as a traitorous schemer that’s ready to overthrow Megatron. And also, Shockblast actually did appear in a show. He appeared in Transformers Energon where he wasn’t an evil loyal scientist who served Megatron, but rather a violent and psychotic criminal who betrayed him any chance he could get. He also had a brother named Sixshot (No relation to the G1 character).
Yes the Shockwave whose true loyalty is to pure logic is a more interesting character. I never really got into the Energon universe but Shockblast does sound like an infinitely better character than g1 cartoon shockwave :)
In the IDW origins story, it's worth mentioning that the captures removing Shockwaves emotions led to their downfall as without emotions there was nothing holding him back from murdering them.
did you know shock wave is VERY similar to BattleTech highlander originally BattleTech used Japanese licenced bots don't know the history but i bet there is a connection even have the one arm gun and same head
Yup im remotely aware of that :) Back in the 80's Japan was a goldmine for US toy companies :) a lot of the popular US robots came from Japanese toys :)
Funny you have a shot of that one accident cover of Marvel Transformers where they forgot to do Primes shoulders and forearms, so it looks like his arms come right out of his sides, not his shoulders. It's not collectable, just funny.
I always liked MARVEL Shockwave over G1 animated Shockwave too, but I never really thought about Shockwave's cyclops head too much....at least until the other cyclops character Whirl was introduced into the toyline. After that, it just made me think that there was just an entire...um...."ethnicity" I guess?.....of cyclops Cybertronians.
Yeah to my knowledge I think IDW was the first to give a proper explanation to the cyclops Transformers. And yes in their universe, Whirl was the recipient of the same punishment as Shockwave .
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf It is difficult for me to peg it. Yes, I agree Tarantulas is the best candidate, but he could easily also parallel Soundwave with his deception/infiltration background. Not to mention that it is Ravage that seeks him out and turns into a cassette tape.(hardest toy to find)
@@gloriousginger Which is probably why Soundwave is often compared to Shockwave...however I think Soundwave is more of a passive, cool deferential personality than Shockwave. It's very rare that he breaks off from his loyalty to Megatron...which is why the Prime version of Soundwave is AWESOME!
Oddly (or logically?) I have 1 version of Shockwave in my collection - Prime Shockwave. I have the Core and Leader class versions. I, too, was turned off by live-action Shockwave, and, in that long period where only live-action/Prime existed, he was the better choice. His “beast armor”remains in the box… LOL I have worked out “Klingon disruptor”-like gun modes for each size, too. Very creepy, but great! Maybe, I should look for a G1 design again.
As interesting as those other versions are...even on a visual level as is the case with DOTM. I'll always go back to the classic G1 design. Interesting stuff on the klingon disrupter mode. Wish I could see it. What G1 version would you go for?
My first impression of Shockwave is from the psp version of the Transformers the game where Shockwave attempted to overthrow Megatron by using the decepticon army drone to conquer earth. I thought that was somewhat of a nod to the Marvel or Dreamwave comics .
Yeah Shockwave is always trying to overthrow Megatron 😅 it's only logical after all 👍 even all those iterations wherein he was "loyal" I figured that it was inevitable that he would turn 🤣
I never really compared Soundwave and Shockwave. They're different bots who serve the Decepticons in different ways. Soundwave being trustworthy and loyal, almost virtuous especially for a Decepticon. Shockwave being nearly the opposite: while he still serves Megatron, he's so cold and calculating he's psychopathic, not caring who he hurts in order to get results. Even G1 Shockwave should send a chill through the chassis of Megatron, let alone any rank-and-file Decepticon, and Megs would do well to keep his eye on Shockwave while still benefiting from the results of his experiments.
You could do another video, showing that 1 eyed things..caaan..see just fine. Monoscopic depth perception..is a real thing. While obviously multifaceted inputs are usually superior..a cyclops wouldn't live long.."in any universe..", without the ability to simply avoid running into simple obstacles ..much less, perform complex tasks..(like safely function in a laboratory).
Thanks! I'm afraid I'm not too much of an expert on one eyed perception 😅 but yes you do bring up interesting points. I know it was an ongoing joke on Futurama that Leela had no depth perception due to her one eye 😅

Cloud 9's Quake Blast is so heavy it could actually hurt someone. He was my first 3rd party bot.
Quake Blast is awesome! Fantastic way to start off your 3rd party collection :) and the box he came in was gorgeous!
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I got that one off Amazon! He is pretty cool in grey altmode!
@robotkyle71 nice! Was he still shockwave? Or a new character?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf He is a Generations Selects, so in the brown cardboard box, his label read "Galactic Man Shockwave"
It's crazy Shockwave just chilled on Cybertron for 4 million years
Carefully plotting his takeover of the Decepticons 🤣
I also like how they hinted through his design that he's very, very old. He seems to come from the crop of Cybertronians that lived under the whip of the Q's. They all had a very specific look and didn't start to really differentiate themselves until much later.
My guess is that had he not been written out he knew EXACTLY what was going on during the 'Five Faces' arc and that's why he would have flipped to the Autobot side.
Also, he kinda saved Cybertron at the end. Without his warning the damage to the entire planet could have been far more significant. While he lived as a menace he died as a hero.
Yes that would be an interesting backstory for his one eyed look!
There's nothing to argue about. It's Soundwave.
Shockwave superior 😅
I wonder if Senator Shockwave was more like Harvey Dent before becoming Two Face
@@aircraftcarrierwo-class thanks for the primer on Dent/two face, much appreciated as I'm more of a Marvel guy when it comes to comic books :)
Never heard of HARDAC before though 🤔 worth checking out?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf HARDAC is from Batman: The Animated Series. I suggest the episodes Heart of Steel and His Silicon Soul, in that order.
Brilliant “puns” throughout 😂😂🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Shockwave in the comics was incredible. Scary.
Yes he was! Complete opposite from the cartoon!
Shockwave is my favourite decepticon
Great choice! 👍👍👍
Now we have Skybound Transformers comics, which show us a somewhat different Shockwave.
I just finished issue 6. Has he made an appearance already? Gotta catch up!
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf He has been in sister title 'Void Rivals', which is part of the Skybound Energon Universe.
@johnevans8533 nice I haven't gone past the first issue of that one...gotta catch up! Just finished issue 7 of TF....brutal!

Shockwave, the creepy amoral scientist. I mean, when you absolutely positively needed something done….
Who ya gonna call? 😅
0:26
Easy, it's starscream
If we're talking seekers...I'll take Thundercracker 😅
Soundwave = Gundam face inspired
Shockwave = Zaku mono eye face inspired
Would recruit both to my team if I ever want to take over the universe.
When taking over the universe it is always smart to have a logically crazy mad scientist AND a Walkman 🤣
Wrong
@alwaysabiggafish3305 what's wrong?

Shockwave was among the unique characters in the marvel comic run. Him along Scorponox, Ratbat and Starscream were all attempts running for leadership
Yeah the Marvel run was pretty good considering they had to shoehorn new characters almost every other issue. I found it amusing at how they made an insignificant soundwave minion in Ratbat end up actually leading the Decepticons at one point!
Shockwave was simply the ruler of Cybertron for longer than any other Cybertronian.
Yes he was! Although in the cartoon he barely had anyone to rule 😅
Great video. Subscribed. I loved Shockwave back in the day but my fav Decepticon will always be Astrotrain.

@mrblond750 thanks! Really happy my style and more importantly humor is appreciated 😅
Like you sharing with me your interesting take on the TFs origin is keeping your memory of it alive :)

@@Autistic_Artist yeah that sounds like an original toy from Japan. I got a lot of those as opposed to actual Transformers:)

@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Filipino accent?
@@chichiboypumpi tama!
You should see whats behind my one eye... Look clooosseerrrr.
🤣🤣🤣
If it’s not Starscream, it’s Shockwave. If it’s not Shockwave, it’s some other Decepticon usurper. Megan just CAN’T seem to catch a break…
Everyone want to be the guy on top of thr proverbial totem pole 👍
I wasn't aware of the show bible history of Shockwave. Thanks for that! Gives a lot more context at least for the show :)
As for the comic covers yeah but I don't think that was exclusive to Marvel...I think most comic companies are guilty of using that tactic. It's like UA-cam thumbnails today...you gotta compete with so many others that you need to visually hook your readers/viewers from the very start :)
Who would win in a fight, a writer for Superman or a writer for Batman?
That depends....Will the writer of Batman have time to plan beforehand? 😅
I just wanted to hear about shockwave not the whole history of the transformers galaxy.
Fair enough :) hope I can win you over with a future story or two!

@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf I wasn't sure if read IDW Transformers. The best. Yeah Whirl was nobody back in the day. If you compare all the early stuff to IDW everyone was nobody. They gave them life. You got to admit that Whirl was one the funniest members on the Lost Light.
Yup definitely worth noting that the acts of Shockwaves rivals ended up to be their own undoing. 👍

And yes in their universe, Whirl was the recipient of the same punishment as Shockwave .
he's definitely my favorite
Nice! One of the best :)
I always like to fantasize that Rampage and Depth Charge represented both aspects of Shockwave.
I missed out on a lot of Beast Wars but from what little I know, I agree with the Tarantulas Shockwave parallelism given how "mad" they were :)

Greatest Transformer Ever!!

Tough call… sound wave.
Not a bad call :) 👍👍
My first impression of Shockwave is from the psp version of the Transformers the game where Shockwave attempted to overthrow Megatron by using the decepticon army drone to conquer earth. I thought that was somewhat of a nod to the Marvel or Dreamwave comics .
Yeah Shockwave is always trying to overthrow Megatron 😅 it's only logical after all 👍 even all those iterations wherein he was "loyal" I figured that it was inevitable that he would turn 🤣
I liked shockwave, he was one of the first transformers I owned, and I think that was before I even saw him on Transformers
I myself never had Shockwave but he must have been an awesome toy to have. Especially as one of tour firsts! :)
Yup completely agree...but as kids' any excuse to pit two bots against each other would do :)
I’m a deception now fuck the senate

I think he's a great dompliment to the MP version :) Thanks for watching! And hope you come back for more!
Who would win between Megatron's more powerful part Galavatron or Shockwave?
Well I guess I'd take Galvatron head on...but the guy is also insane and the much more logical Shockwave would eventually find a way to defeat him.
TF Prime Shockwave is the best characterization in my opinion
The mad scientist is always a winner in my book :)
