Well cobra IS a social justice organization. According to the comics cobra commander was a guy who rebelled against the system after his car dealership went under. Looking back at it there were a massive amount of red pills in that comic with cobra.
Fun fact: Dusty's 'submachine gun' is in fact not a submachine gun, but a bull pup rifle, the FAMAS, of French design, and trust, tracks that it would be used by the French foreign legion, who are known for their desert theatre operations.
Also of interest, is that the FAMAS is of the first weapons with a modular design, hence the bipod, which is usually used with precision rifles and light machine guns
@Breaker197 nice! Despite having zero knowledge about the FAMAS as a kid, it always struck me as a very unique design. Here's a fun fact for you....in my country, FAMAS is the equivalent to the US Oscar in movies so when you mention the gun...an award pops in my head 😂
Probably my favorite figure from my early Joe days, and an *excellent* character, with character. Over the years, I've gotten the impression that many casual fans only remember him as "the traitor," forgetting the fact that is was all a ruse, which is unfortunate. That said, that cartoon plotline actually lines up well with Dusty's comic appearances, which, as you mentioned, always had a poignancy to them. Even his file card portrays him as a level-headed, down-to-earth individual. Dusty's great.
Yeah it's unfortunate that the traitor part of the story gets more attention with casuals. But I like the fact that he got a special two part storyline focused on him 👍 not many Joes can put that on their resume! 👍 and that Sneak peek story really made quite the impression on me as a kid! Who else are some of your favorite Joes?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf That's a good way of looking at it. How many other Joes got two-parters? Shipwreck (a couple times?). Flint? Duke, as the lead in the mini series. Falcon got a whole movie. Other favorite Joes? So many, but Outback (another guy like Dusty who has mainly poignant appearances), Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow (who *is* a good guy!), etc.
@G7M9W nice! I remember Putback being one of my favorite Joe toys simply because he had an actual harness for his backpack. A small detail that really made him stand out! Also he had that awesome Special missions issue with Dusty :) did you read that one?
@G7M9W too bad for Mangler though 😬 he would've made quite the interesting Joe. I actually remember having Lightfoot so it was nice seeing him have some quality usage 👍
Dusty was my all time favourite action figure and was always the leader and winner in my adventures. I refuse to believe he joined cobra in any other capacity then a spy
Thanks! Yeah there are quite a lotnof interesting....and funny Joe stuff that I've actually rediscovered myself doing my research. Glad you enjoyed them too! 👍👍👍 poor Duke 😅
You raise an interesting point. If Duke really survived GI Joe the Movie, having 3+ major comas in his background might have caused serious brain damage.
Thank you! Glad you liked what you saw and welcome to Stories From The Toyshelf! Hope you come back for more :) and I hope ta hear more from you! What is your favorite toyline? Joes? Transformers? Anything else? Let me know! 👍
The blue camo design seems more of an urban camo variant there. It's easy enough for a lot of various characters, even specialists, in camo to have alternate gear as needed to deal with situations outside of their specialty, camo being something easily swappable
Yeah a lot of the original vintage Joes are fetching crazy Ebay prices especially MOC ones. I remember when I used to customizer Joesnin the early 2000s they were all relatively cheap I would buy them off eBay just to take them apart for pieces 😅
I recall an episode of G.I.Joe where I think there was a Joe that got bit by a deadly insect on the back of the neck. I think it was Dusty and some alternate reality Baroness vowed to save his live if he stayed with her. It's been close to 40 years since I've seen that episode air. I might be wrong, but I know Dusty was important to the episode in some way and there was a desert involved.
I think that was alternate universe episode where Cobra won and Baroness was a double agent. If that's the case it was Steeler. I don't recall the bug but I do remember him being quite delusional for some reason 😅
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf What I do recall which surprised me as a kid was that there were the skeletal remains of G.I.JOEs that were still alive in the other universe along with a dead Dusty. But yeah, imagine being a 7 or 10 year old watching that back in the 1980's.
I’m from the old days of GI Joe days from the very original Joes and into the 80’s. The Soft gear dusty has I don’t know if you can call it the first because the original Joes had actual fabric uniforms that you could change out. The fabric uniform even had snap buttons on them
He was probably my favorite as a kid. Of course when I was a kid, all our wars were being fought in the desert. So my little brain just interpreted him as being a generic soldier because that’s what soldiers looked like in my from my experience. They were all desert troopers, lol. But yeah, I really felt drawn to him because he reminded me of that one friends cool dad that everyone knew, who fought in Iraq. XD I imagine there’s an 80’s kid out there who loves Recondo for the same reason, since most veterans they knew were Vietnam guys.
That is an interesting insight! I always Thought recondo deserved more love. He just seemed so cool. But I guess the "official" Vietnam guys were Snake Eyes, Stalker and Storm Shadow 👍
Great video altogether! I just came upon this ,and I remember that two parter(cept Duke's coma).. so did Martin Scorsese I guess.. probably but GI Joe had some pretty good episodes. I didn't have the biggest toy collection for Joe's as a kid.. but I did have Sneak- Peek... Lightfoot, also the Tiger Stripe redo of Dusty. Sneak peek was so freaking lame or at least I thought... Now they would be like purple heart MVPs.. glad to see these characters are getting some cool treatment... I definitely understand about the cloth.. I would rather have the Tiger- Force one. That's a little detail but not. That was unique to that figure. The original at least not mine probably. I wonder if it's a call back to the way old figures now that I think about it..
Thank you! Happy you liked the video :) yeah for the most part the cartoon was pretty light but there were some really good ones peppered in here and there. I actually never had Sneak Peek but I did have Lightfoot :) and of course Dusty ...I really wish they would've gone for the cloth for the Classified version. But as it is he's still pretty cool. Tiger force version was a great and interesting color departure from the original. Thanks for your comment! And hope to hear from you more!
If memory serves in ww1 the british found that using modified barbwire they could make a road in the desert for their men to more easily cross. They would later use a purpose built webbing of some kind.
Oh that's very interesting and making what seemed to be an odd random accessory into a cool add on to an already awesome figure. Thanks so much for the info! Much appreciated! 👍👍👍
Interesting how the best versions of this figure also come with some rather obscure real world weapons, the original and Classic Collectables line have a French FAMAS famously used by the French Foreign Legion who are/were some seriously dangerous criminals and lost souls who serve in the harshest of environments like the African deserts and South American jungles. The other is the American made Kriss Vector, a pistol calibre submachine gun with a very unusual recoil mitigating system designed by a Frenchman (coincidence? no idea) but hasn't seen much use outside of Panama, Bangladesh and general private security like an H&K MP5K.
Awesome, I've been told about the FAMAS by a lot of commenters but you're the first to talk about the Kriss vector 👍 prob not a coincidence that Classified Dusty was given the weapon! Love learning more about this stuff! Thanks!
Dusty debuted in cameo in G. I. Joe Yearbook #2, and played a big role in G. I. Joe #58 & 100, and Special Missions #13. A real problem with Joes & Cobra troops of specific specialization is that they rarely, if ever, will be used, if at all. Apart from The Traitor, Dusty got major screen time in the episode "Hearts and Cannons", where he and Footloose meet a female laser weapons specialist who can pass for G. I. Jane. (In one Postbox: The Pit, one female reader wrote in that, "I'm glad you made Dusty... handsome (I have a crush on a nonexistent character, so sue me)."
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Footloose is one my fave Joes. In terms of outfit he sure beats Grunt. In the cartoons, he's more like the team's Fonz, always cool.
As you said about Duke going in to a coma how ever in the film's original script, Duke dies in battle after receiving a wound from a snake spear hurled by Serpentor.

I loved Dusty in the OG!! Was my second favorite character...of them ALL!!! Zartan was/ looked/sounded cool, Baroness and Scarlett of course, (allover HOT!!! and Scarlett was a redhead!!!!) Shipwreck was cool, Cobra Commander had just the right voice...
Yup the GIJOE had so many great characters that there was always someone that everyone could latch onto as a favorite. Dusty though was special IMHO :) got great character story arcs in both comics and cartoon.
I always thought Dusty was in the French Foreign Legion, and transfered to GI Joe as a desert specialist. It never said anything like that in the file card or the cartoon or comic, but it made sense to me as a kid. Yo Joe
Yeah I heard about that. But the UK version was a totally different animal from what I hear...putting out a weekly comic of fairly good stoeytelling quality is quite the accomplishment 👍👍👍
I am not sure the official reason but I imagine it is a hygiene issue, water in the desert is not exactly abundant, also the dust and sand would stick to the camo like crazy.
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf So GI Joe did it in 1991 and Obsidian copied it in 2010. Cool. It was one of my favourites in the game. So of course it came from a Marvel writer. =^_^=
The Traitor was a great episode. Dusty is cool, but he was never a favorite. He was released during GIJoe's best era where there were just too many awesome figures to choose from! Dusty also did have a desert themed cartoon ep with Footloose. But it was a pretty meh ep.
The reason you dig Face-Off is because of John Woo 😂, if you haven't seen it look up 'Hard Boiled' (in my opinion Woo's Masterpiece). You will thank me later😂. Kung Fury! Yo Freaking Joe!
Habh good call! Back then John Woo was so big time and his style was unmistakable.....especially with the birds 😅 will definitely check out Hard Boiled 👍

@StoriesFromTheToyshelf didn't know any of them died, but the alternate universe one in the cartoon. So please do one. I can't believe they got killed off. I'm loosing it... lol. You messed up my head with that. My mouth hit the ground in disbelief.
@roberthall843 yeah the original Marvel comics were quite a different animal from the cartoons. A lot of death even in the earlier issues. But that one story arc really took the cake as it seemed like Larry Hama was out to prove a point. You want death? You got it!
@StoriesFromTheToyshelf that's awesome. Love the way you put everything in your videos to tell the story. Definitely a flash back on all the cool shit I???? We loved lol. Can't wait to see that one. It may make me get back into comics. oh I will be watching the test of your videos til then so I'm sure you will hear from my again lol. You blew my mind bro, and told me my heroes are dead..lol .
G. I. Joe's The Traitor could've been better. As Dusty was a Desert Trooper, why should he fit in as a spy? Scarlett and Lady Jaye are spies; Duke should've forged new identities for them. Also, the McGuffin was the super armor formula- Airtight would've been more credible as he's a Chemical/Biological/Radiological Warfare expert. The Traitor was the only episode where Ft. Wadsworth was mentioned; Dusty's surname here was "Rudat", a nod to Hasbro Joe character designer Ron Rudat. For the toyline, his last name is Tadur, another play on Mr. Rudat's name. This was also the first episode where Duke goes into a coma. The Transformers' The Traitor episode was far better.
Yeah well I guess they wanted to feature Dusty as the newer toy? Anyway I still thought it was a cool episode. And I gotta rematch Mirages traitor episode again...between the two he's more associated with being a traitor 👍👍👍

I remember that episode. BUT i also remember his racist slips in another episode growing up. Barbeque kinda added to it. Gung-Ho didn't help either. The biggest let down was Duke and Snake Eyes allowing it. At least Gung-Ho kinda made up with Horror Show. But yeah as an "off white" kid The Invaders episode left a bad taste that took years to shake. Dusty, Barbeque and Cross Country......
What episode was that? Would like to check it out. Having not seen it, my initial reaction would be to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. I'd like to think there was no actual malice to what they wrote. That being said I'd like to see it for myself. 👍

Yeah I heard about that. But the UK version was a totally different animal from what I hear...putting out a weekly comic of fairly good stoeytelling quality is quite the accomplishment 👍👍👍
Not having camo face paint on the modern Dusty is the correct way as we no longer use it in real life.
Really? I didn't know that. What is the reason for nor using camo anymore?
I am not sure the official reason but I imagine it is a hygiene issue, water in the desert is not exactly abundant, also the dust and sand would stick to the camo like crazy.
@col.mustard1233 OK that does make sense. Still it would've made him look cooler 😅
I switched sides because Cobra had better health benifit.
Hey that's one of the best reasons to do so! Ruling the world is a dangerous business....especially if you have to deal with fatal fluffies 😅
When was that comic? Because that line was used by the Courier in Fallout New Vegas.
Sorry what line?
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf The carried a dead soldier out of combat because they gave their word.
@danamoore1788 OK that was from issue 113 of the original Marvel run
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf So GI Joe did it in 1991 and Obsidian copied it in 2010. Cool. It was one of my favourites in the game. So of course it came from a Marvel writer. =^_^=
The Traitor was a great episode. Dusty is cool, but he was never a favorite. He was released during GIJoe's best era where there were just too many awesome figures to choose from!
Dusty also did have a desert themed cartoon ep with Footloose. But it was a pretty meh ep.
Oh I don't remember that one. Will look for it. Footloose was cool...the stoner of the group 😅
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf It was "Hearts and Cannons" It wasn't memorable. Not bad, just....kind of there.
@cheeseburger12 thanks will check it out anyway!
He was from the same wave as Bazooka it seems. That's already got someone drawing the old eyeballs next to him.
@brettwood1351 yup that's one of the best waves character wise IMHO...I mean who can forget the classic trio Bazooka, Alpine and Quick Kick? 😅
🤣 😂 🤣 the birds!. Just wait till you the tea house scene in Hard Boiled. KUNG FURY!
Yo Freaking Joe!
@retrojoe8290 I better not show that to my daughter....she has an irrational fear of birds 😬
Please do a video on all the Joe's that died in the comics
Hmmm that's a great suggestion. I already did one on quick kick. But yeah I think I could do that :) which death hit you the hardest? For me it was Doc.....brutal. thanks for the suggestion 👍
@roberthall843 ha ha thanks! Looking forward to hearing more from you! And here's to reminiscing and recalling the great stories from our childhoods!
Wait... People actually die in gijoe comics?!
Oh yeah....especially the ones after the original Marvel run 👍
At 2:01 I know it's fictional, but it's not a submachine gun
Yup I have since been corrected 👍👍 👍 thanks 😁
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf
At least Mirage was credible as a potential traitor- he is the Autobots' Counterintelligence Specialist.
@dinomonzon7493 and he came from upper Cybertronia society and so unfair or not, garnered a lot of distrust from his more down to earth Autobots.
He has a famas HE'S FRENCH. That's why he defected.
He he maybe he IS! 😅
Huh, he’s got a famas and that headgear looks similar to old French foreign legion wargear, could he be a legionnaire?
I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure it's seved as the primary inspiration for his design 👍
Bros using a kaiber pass looking Famas.
As someone not familiar with fire arms I'll take your word for it 👍👍👍
Khyber pass is a Pakistan/ Afghanistan region known for homemade firearms based on existing blueprints that vary in quality depending on the machinist.
@makvande576 oh OK makes more sense now. Although works the Joes allow Dusty to use such a weapon?
because they made him use a French gun
Well that would turn anyone traitor I guess? 😅
I'll choose Spirit (forest specialist?). 😂 Joe fans be like "I hate DIC Gi Joe and all the sci-fi Cobra La crap!" (Yes Cobra La is a dumb name, it's a reference to Shangri-la). "But SunBow Gi Joe rules!" (With space furries, Mass Devices, and Pyramids of Doom).🤔
Yo Freaking Joe!
Hmmm I didn't have Spirit in mind as a specialist....but I'll let that pass 😅 can you believe I only just watched Operation Dragonfire a few weeks ago for the first time in its entirety??? What's even weirder is I actually thought it was....ok 😅 nowhere near Sunbow of course...but not so bad 🤣
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Dic Joe will grow on you. Just don't touch it or you'll go blind.
Yo Freaking Joe!
DIC Joe will grow on you, just don't play with it, YOU'LL GO BLIND!.
Yo Freaking Joe!
Bc of his name.
Dusty? Sorry I'm lost 😅
I did too
Sorry lost.....you did what?😅
I always thought his name was Dusty Hayes.
Hey Bryan! That's the dude from MASK 😅
9:19 it’s kinda fucked the gi joes would leave a man behind.
Yeah but I guess war drives people to do f'ed up things...even the Joes.
Dusty didnt he was a doubke agent for the joes
Yes he was :) 👍

Thank you! 👍👍👍
Clearly you have never been to Central Washington. The desert there is definitely dusty.
Clearly. 👍👍👍
Smg no that's famas ar
👍👍👍
Do u have to give a different image on screen for every word u say ???? It’s so annoying. Make a normal video
I wouldn't say EVERY word. 🤣 if you find it annoying that's perfectly fine. I don't expect everyone to like it. I'm also not forcing anyone to watch my videos. Either way I appreciate the view and comment 👍
@@StoriesFromTheToyshelf Just make a normal video with less pics for the words u say and just show images of the character u present. No need to have so many images and no one will complain if u do . The rest is good
Feedback noted! 👍
@StoriesFromTheToyshelf The Invaders. Cross Country wasn't in it. But c'mon we ALL know about Cross Country.
@fontanag.darling737 OK will check it out 👍
I'm sorry but I hate your video style and cannot watch any further than 2 minutes as it is violently hurting my brain
No worries it's not for everyone and that's fine. Appreciate the feedback though! 👍👍👍
