This was probably the strongest 0-6-0 locomotive at the time since I was a 5F before about 16 years later the Q1 was built in 1942 for freight work in the War years. I love it how they both have a 5F classification which makes them strong 0-6-0s along with the Fowler 4F. This locomotive looks similar to the Fowler 4F.
I've had one for a while now, numbered 64964. I converted it to dcc by putting a decoder in the tender, connected to the loco with four thin wires. Run a treat for an oldie.
Mike has TCS-M1, decoder which is fitted for a keep alive (not yet fitted). It is fitted in the body a la Bromsgrove models instructions. [they have gone but instructions still on the interweb] . There is just enough room... just. Runs beautifully
Great review of a superb class of steam locomotive .I have five of the bachmann J39 locomotives in different types of livery and weathering finishes and find them to be excellent in quality and running capabilities
Hi, thanks very much for the comment - blimey, that has to be one of the best J39 collections then! Which other liveries did they do? Yeah I was very impressed by mine - very good models! All the best, Sam :)
The Bachmann J39s that I have have the liveries of LNER ,2 with the Late British Rail Crest one of which is weathered and 2 with the Early British Rail Crest one which is weathered also .You could say I am a great fan of the J39 steam locos !!
Yes you can say I am a great fan of the J39 locomotives. In my collection I have 31-860 (no 1469 ) in LNER Black ; 31-862 (no 64791 ) in BR Black L/Crest ; 31-864 (no 64841 ) in BR Black L/Crest weathered ; 31-855A ( no 64897 ) in BR Black E/Crest ; 31-864 (no 64841 ) in BR Black L/Crest weathered ; 31-855 ( no 1856 ) in LNER Lined Black and last but not least 31-864 ( no 64841 ) in BR Black L/Crest weathered by Lord And Butler model centre
Another good review of a good loco Sam. It makes me smile when you say it's an older model, many of mine date back to the 1960's - 80's. The round objects you pointed out on the front above and behind the lamp irons are the front end of the pistons. Cheers again Sam, David.
Thanks David! Yeah, of course it's not old like my tri-and models are, but certainly older than most Bachmann models around today! Thanks for the info on the Pistons - I realised that's what they were the other day when I noticed the Q1 had them too, makes sense that they're there really! All the best, Sam :)
Thanks very much Keith - yeah this one was a must! Thanks, yeah I'm really proud of some of that freight now, I love the way it looks in larger consists! All the best, Sam :)
Hey Sam! I recently picked up one of these engines and was wondering how to maintain it, as I can't seem to understand how to do so. Do you have any advice?
Another good review. Amazing how some sticky (not seized) bogey wheels can make a perfectly good engine seem sluggish, or cause a dramatic wheel slip. Alan.
Thanks Alan, is that the 3F you mean? If so, I know what you mean - I think one more coach would have been enough to stop her, but keeping it borderline does make for some nice wheelslip! All the best mate, Sam :)
Fantastic little engine they are brought one in br black with early crest 64964 got it for 30 quid from shop in Mansfield she runs like a dream was surprised how smooth it is 😀😀
Should have had an 0-6-0 banker on the back of the J39's train. I noticed the J39 was really struggling up Gordon's Hill with one wagon too many behind her. Her performance is 4 out of 10 for me. Of the other four 0-6-0s around the layout, I can only name the LMS 4F and the GWR 0-6-0 3210. The Southern 0-6-0 I can't remember what class, and the 0-6-0 behind the pub is a mystery to me. I'm not all that good at naming different 0-6-0s, yet I recognise an LMS 4F and a GWR 22xx when I see them.
Nice video once again, Sam. Many thanks for the mention again, it was nice to see a locomotive that I'd requested some time ago. In return, I have videos of Evesham Vale Light Railway's Diesel Gala, Featuring Double Headed Listers! If you request to see the videos, please tell me, so 1) I can upload the videos, and 2) I can give you a mention in the video. Cheers, Adam :-)
Great review as ever, if you're taking requests, will you be doing a review of the fowler 7f at some point? And by the way, the things on the front of the loco were the pistons. Keep the faith - Callum
Hi Callum, thanks very much for your comment! Sadly I don't have a 7f at the moment, but it's certainly on my list, if I ever get one and review it, I'll give you a shout out! Thanks for the info on the pistons too, yeah a few others pointed that out - glad they included that detail! :D All the best mate, Sam :)
I don't know if they ship to the UK but here is a link to a US model train shop that has really good prices www.trainworld.com/manufacturers/bachmann/bachmann-ho-scale/
5F? Wow, this J39 locomotive has the same pulling power of freight as the Class Q1 because they are both tender 0-6-0 locomotives and they were classified as a 5F which is pretty strong for a 0-6-0 locomotive. :P
Hi Mitchell, two lovely locomotives there! I think the B1 is probably the best of the two actually - especially the slightly older Bachmann one, which I can really recommend! All the best mate, and good luck in your buyings! :D Cheers, Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains :D why thank you. it's what got me into model railroading. I kinda lost all of my HO scale stuff due to personal reasons, but it's nice to still appreciate the hobby. I do wish I could collect again.
Thanks very much mate, good job with the naming of the locos, just the J15 was actually the C class, but that was a nasty one! Yeah I thought it was time to add a new scene, I'm learning slowly haha! All the best mate, Sam :)
Hi, thanks for the comment! Yeah, you'd be surprised how easily they can get BR black wrong - the texture, the finish or the level of gloss can all make a big difference - but with this, they got it right! All the best, Sam :)
no worries sam you do a lot of very good reviews as i have book law on hold now that you done the review on the loco so cheers for your review on book law mate :)

Yeah I bet it probably was - 5f sounds very high for this indeed!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
4:55 they're the cylinder heads as these locos had their cylinders between the frames. :)
Thanks! Yeah I found that out.... just after I finished filming this lol!
I love the split chassis locos. they go over the points so well, and the Manlone variety sounded great too.
I've had one for a while now, numbered 64964.
I converted it to dcc by putting a decoder in the tender, connected to the loco with four thin wires.

Oh awesome! I'd like to do that to mine one day, good job!

I love how I look at buying a train for my dad I can Google "Sam's train [train I want to buy]" and there's a realistic review of it

Both of the J39s are Johnson and Callum
Nice review, man do I love the 0-6-0's. My favorite loco you've review is the J15 and this one is amazing. Keep up the great work. - Sean O
Thanks a lot - glad you like them! Ooh yeah that was a lovely engine!
Thanks for the lovely comment mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice loco for your collection. Cracking running session and your freight stock is building up and looking good.
Thanks very much Keith - yeah this one was a must! Thanks, yeah I'm really proud of some of that freight now, I love the way it looks in larger consists!
All the best,

Hey Sam!
I recently picked up one of these engines and was wondering how to maintain it, as I can't seem to understand how to do so.
Do you have any advice?
Just got home from a train show and I wish they had as good details. Great review
Ah right - you win some you lose some I suppose!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
hi Sam, if you have one I recommend you review the hornby A1x terrier, it's my favourite locomotive...
Another good review. Amazing how some sticky (not seized) bogey wheels can make a perfectly good engine seem sluggish, or cause a dramatic wheel slip. Alan.

Thanks a lot mate - ooh that sounds brilliant for £30 - great bargain! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That loco would look really good with some weathering
I agree
Yeah definitely - it just doesn't look right when it's clean!
Cheers,
Sam :)
+Oliver die Great Western LoKomotive yes she would +Sam'sTrains
I'm considering having mine weathered by Grimy Times. It is a bit too black.
yeah in BR days it was rare to see a freight loco that clean
Can you review a Stewart Reidpath tank engine & Larko engines?
That sounds awesome John! :D
10:10 SR 700 class?
Yes again!

Thanks very much mate! Yeah I think she's still a smart girl, and I love getting the Q1 out!!

I heard that they're planning to re-make this loco with a few differences
They are! A new chassis I believe! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
These engines had two variants. The j38 and j39. The only difference is that the j38 has smaller wheels. And the j39 had a passengers class of 4p.
Duly noted Aryan, thanks a lot for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)

good vid once again mate. Are u going to the great electric train show on the 8th or 9th?
Thanks very much mate! No I don't think so sadly, I think I'll have a lot on around that time :(

Yeah absolutely - I was amazed that it was a 5F - good old Gresley!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
great work! sam
Thanks very much mate, glad you like it!
Cheers,

I wander if this was made during bachmanns bad years, you know what i mean.
I'm either buying a j38, or a b1. kinda leaning towards b1 though :/
Hi Mitchell, two lovely locomotives there! I think the B1 is probably the best of the two actually - especially the slightly older Bachmann one, which I can really recommend!
All the best mate, and good luck in your buyings! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The only problem with my j39 it won’t go on my hornby points
Ahh yes - I wonder if the gauging is off due to the split-chassis issues?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
j15, johnson 3f/4f, SR 700 class, GWR 2251, cow on lowmac, (not an engine, but still)
Very good - professional train spotting skills there!
Cheers,
Sam :)
+Sam'sTrains What can I say Sam. I'm American, but I have an eye for British stock.
Blimey! That's even more impressive really! :D

Great vid once again Sam. EPIC wheel slip from the Deally, (Skewz da spollin ;) ) Love it
haha thanks Jon - yeah I love it when they wheelslip too! :D
Cheers mate,

Good one. Were the other locos J15,Fowler 4F, Drummond 700 Black Motor, Collett 2251. I see an outbreak of new scenery as well .Nice
Thanks very much mate, good job with the naming of the locos, just the J15 was actually the C class, but that was a nasty one! Yeah I thought it was time to add a new scene, I'm learning slowly haha!
All the best mate,

All the best,
Sam :)
My new loco (j39) has sprung buffers and it's lner the running number is 1496
That's very cool! I would like to try one of the newer ones actually! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Great vid! It's a lovely loco! :)
Thanks very much mate, glad you enjoyed it! :D
This looks fine and dandy
It definitely wasn't bad! :D
"They seem to have got the BR black just right." Eh, how could you not get plain black right? It's not like there are different shades of black.
Hi, thanks for the comment! Yeah, you'd be surprised how easily they can get BR black wrong - the texture, the finish or the level of gloss can all make a big difference - but with this, they got it right!
All the best,
Sam :)
great video
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it! :D
Cheers,

These are my favrouite LNER engines

Yeah that's true - it does look similar! :D
Hi Sam really enjoyed video as always. Oscar
Hi Oscar, thanks very much for the kind comment, glad you enjoyed the loco!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
14 people don't like J39s Sam say something? it's a Gresley engine no one can hate those!
Haha, who doesn't like them?? Yeah, it's a lovely engine!
Cheers,

Thanks for watching,

OR A MINI BLACK 5
haha yeah - the Black 5 of the LNER maybe?? :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
11:42 too low! :)
Ah you think? My apologies!
You should do some crashes
haha, these models are pretty expensive though - I don't really want to be crashing them!
Cheers,
Sam :)
It reminds me of na LNER version of the LMS fowler 4f,
Yes! It was the LNERs equivalent - definitely very similar!
All the best,
Sam :)
Wait let me guess, are his eyes watching me?
Yes. Yes they are! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Don’t give away that video, Sam.
I won't Kenji!

I just bought this loco today for 10 buck. Needs a little work
Same got mine off of eBay, but I wander if it was made during bachmannn's quality control issue years when there trains failed a lot.
