Beautiful looking loco. 7684's original number was 392, and she was built in Oct 1939. She spent a lot of time in Middlesbrough, but had stints at 2 of my local depots, Hull Botanic Gardens (53B) and Hull Dairycoates (53A), before heading to Gateshead depot in Newcastle. Hopefully there will be a new build/replica soon. But I think its only after the V4 is complete. Keep it up Mr Sam.

Hi Sam it's me Henry341adventure I just bought a Q1 steam locomotive on eBay for 80$ bucks today it seems like a fair price to me and it was brand new I watch your video on the Q1 and it looked awesome. Great video Sam 👍🏻👍🏻😎
Lovely loco the V1/3 and I've picked up one off e bay for £40, it's the 1st issue one in early BR black and they have footplate crew fitted , but the later ones don't seem have these ?
Sam I forgot to tell u something I just bought a Bachmann Lner peppercorn a2 class Tudor minstrel for a 140 pounds and my mom just bought me a Hornby Lner a3 class minoru for 99 pounds pretty good prices when I’m not paying for them have a good day
What a beautiful model! Don’t forget, V3 is one of the future projects of the A1 Trust! After no. 2007 Prince of Wales, they’ll do a V4, then a V3, and last a K3!
Great review Sam, the V3 is a great looking tank engine, even in this older model. We’ll be looking out for one for our layout, not sure there are many out there for £30-40 anymore though!

LNER #7684 was built at Doncaster Works on October 31st, 1939 originally as LNER 392. She later became LNER 7684 in 1946 and then to BR 67684 in 1948. She was withdrawn from Gateshead Shed on November 11th, 1964 and was cut up at T.J. Thompson & Sons Scrapyard in Stockton on August 31st, 1965.
Fantastic review Sam, i do love some of the LNER's tank engines-i do like the shape of the running board on the London and North Eastern Railway. The curves look absolutely sublime. Well done again
Nice one Sam. Yup that livery is the 1946 post WW2 green, with a much simplified typeface. Also the V1 / V3's had a few major issues. Gresley never mastered the concept of 2 wheeled pony trucks, and all his 2 wheeled leading pony truck designs (V1/2/3/4 plus the P1 and P2 and a lot of his mogals ) suffered from the fact they used to be a bit to highly strung and bounced all over the place on point work, often leading to derailments, a thing he never got right, and not for the want of trying. Another problem with them was being a 3 cylinder design, with a single cast triple cylinder block they were, like a lot of Gresleys 3 cylinder locos they were awkward and expensive to maintain, at least compared with other 2 cylnder designs for other lines and pre grouping non GNR designs. They were also hungry beasts and used more coal and water per mile than the GER 0-6-2 and 2-4-2 tanks they were intended to replace, so durring and after WW2 they began to be realocated away from the London suburban trains they were designed for, moving to the Yorkshire area, and used on lighter suburban trains in the Leeds area, as well as light goods work and banking duties. Keep up the good work Jon
Thanks a lot Jon - ahh good, the hunch paid off then! Ahh I wasn't aware of that with the trucks - that's very interesting! Glad these aren't too troublesome in model form! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, if u listen very closely, u can hear one of the coaches that the v3 was pulling making the clicky sound. It actually makes me think it’s really making that chugging sound. Lol. Great vid. :D
Think I might have mentioned this before but if you do get an axle failure where the plastic splits, you can fix it with some heatshrink tube. Just place over the centre of the axle, lightly heat the tube and it'll pull the split closed.
That's a smart idea Jake - but that will act as an insulator, and reduce the pickup capability! I also don't know how well heat shrink will wear on the bearings - it may wear down and leave debris inside! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains nah nah nah I think you misunderstand :) pull the nylon axle off, put a thin strip in the centre leaving the parts that slot onto the wheels clear, heat and then refit the axles. Done it to both my manors and my class 4
Excellent video as usual Sam, awesome loco. Here's an idea for you, how about buying a Bachmann Peppercorn A2 to add to your fleet. Then you would have examples of both Peppercorn designs in your collection. Look forward to the next video, kind regards Gary.
N2, M17?, J94 and 14XX were the engines. There seemed to be two odd ones. The 14XX and M17? (not to sure about that one) but I'm guessing that they are odd because they aren't LNER. So you finally reviewed the damn thing. Been waiting for this since I saw it back in one of your running sessions, took a while didn't it XD. But this model did surprise me when I saw it since I didn't even know Bachmann ever made a LNER doncaster green livery for these girls. The rumours are also saying that they are also making a V4, which I hope gets a model some time soon. Cheers Avi
Nice video! Sir Nigel greasly did design some good trains didn’t he! There was something similar to this on my heritage line for a gala but I honestly can’t remember whever it was tender or not and what it was called ha. Good work as usual Sam, can’t wait for the next review!!
YES! This' my favorite locomotive class! I love the V3's. Thanks for the fun video Sam. And yeah, I do enjoy seeing older models. Bit surprised the V3 didn't fall in the vintage rankings. Was your your limit 20 years? Regardless, it was great to see it on the layout. Also, spotted the odd one out at 15:07
That's good to hear mate - yeah these are real beauties!! :D Well done with the spots - yes I did think about that, but this was produced in the last 20 years, and the tooling dates back further.... so it was a toss up! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The V3 reminds me of Eric from SI3D. He was an engine that never made it to the official Thomas the tank engine series. Although, there are some videos on UA-cam that have Eric as an official character in fanmade series sporting the number 12.
I would love to have this in my collection. And I saw your Spencer giveaway video, and I think I missed out. The v3, is my favorite suburban tank engine from the lner
Another nice review, I’ve heard you mention split chassis before but as my stock is at least 25 years old now I’ve not come across them myself, I now see what you were on about a bit of an odd design. I’ve only got back in to the hobby recently so have missed a fair bit, I really must get some new stuff but with so much I like the look of it could get really expensive.
Thanks a lot Rob - Split chassis was very prominent 25 years ago, so you may well have a few examples - Bachmann used to use them quite a lot! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Only have 1 Bachmann, and sure enough it is. A Lord Nelson class "Robert Blake". The last xmas present I bought my late father. Its hardly been run in but I'll keep an eye out for any problems.
There's multiple reasons why Nigel Gresley is nearly everyone's favourite locomotives designer. Damn that Doncaster crisp apple green on the Gresley LNER's is the most attractive steam engine livery IMO. Who else agrees. What's your take Sam?
Hi Sam nice review of the V3, I've got the exact same one and it needed some repairs to its wheel pin holders when I got it. It sometimes have a problem with running and needs a nudge to get it going but then what iffy running model don't from time to time. I got mine because its the bases of a character in You tuber Victor Tanzig video's Story's Of Sodor and his name is Eric. nice story's worth a watch if you have time. Look forward to watching your future videos. :)
Thanks Joseph! Yeah that's the thing - they're really not the most reliable of runners, but they're not terrible! I will have to check that out!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Look pretty good and you got it for a good price, a good solid engine. Considering that if you would probably not really run it at so slow speeds, as long as it goes at a reasonable scale speed I would say that would be fine. Shunters are a different thing and I would expect one of those to crawl along like my Bachmann GE 44t which particularly good as it has four driven axles.
Hey Sam I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m already impressed by the choice of the loco oh and Sam video idea if u have any locos that u haven’t run in the channel at all make a video about those locos u haven’t run on the channel and a few more requests the Hornby Lner class a4 quicksilver Hornby Lner a4 silver king Hornby Lner a4 silver fox the Bachmann class j and the Hornby Oliver and the Hornby 9f cock o the north lol and the Hornby flyingscotsman in wartime black and the rivarossi shunting tractor and the Hornby class 67 and one more the Bachmann 03 class shunter oh I got some of these ideas from Johns amazing trains keep on the great videos cheers
Hey George, that's great to hear! Yeah I do have quite a few that I've never shown - I will get them all going soon!! :D Great ideas - I have shown some of those in the past! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
this is quite a nice locomotive! Now very often you see large tank engines in LNER green! On a side note, has anyone made an OO gauge LNER V2 in the past 20 years?
Very nice review! I always like your videos :D Hihi, they’re awesome! I’m busy now with my new N scale track, better layout, scenery, bigger etc. Roy :)
Thanks a lot mate! It was a while ago - but I found mine on Ebay! Hatton's are selling them new though - link in the description! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
When you said that the wheel set binds up at around 12:03 was it a reference to only that model or all of this class, thanks I just bought one and I’m starting to worry about my purchase
Amazing review again . I will look into buying one of these. Your reviews are always fun to watch. I have a question or more I need advice I have a Bachmann Hall class ( I think it’s a olten Hall ) and when I run it with some old triang suburban coaches it wheel slips a lot , also the draw bar to connect the tender to the loco is broken do you know how I could fix that or would I have to buy a new tender chassis, and for the wheel slip I think I would just need to buy traction tyres. Again great video your my favorite model railway channel😁. Cheers.
Thanks a lot Steven - good luck if you decide to get one! Hmm, it depends on the coupling - you could swap it with a similar one? As for the wheelslip - it depends on the coaches - do they have plastic wheels? If so, make sure they're well lubricated on the bearings, or consider swapping them for later metal ones! :D Cheers, Sam :)
Great video Sam, I love those tank engines that have more length than usual. I also have a video request/suggestion, what if you did videos with no commentary on just the sounds of the locomotive and label the screen what sound is playing at the time, I only ask because I can not afford Sound Value Locomotives, but I can afford a small bluetooth speaker that can fit in one of my box-cars, and I think it would be so cool if while my train is going, I can play the video on my phone and have a makeshift Sound Value System. I also think that it would make a good "series" and addition to your channel, and they would for sure have my views, support, and comments. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read all of our comments!! Thanks for reading!! ,Dylan
Thanks Dylan! I don't have collections of sound effects that are mine to publish unfortunately - but there are plenty out there on the internet!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Isn't a V3 has a recent "Thomas & friends" character? BTW do u know anything about a maroon class 53 with "falcon" written on it? Last month i saw it 3 times at the "Pit" (an old beat down switching station) in Budapest, and do British locos aren't so unusual at the "Pit" (Floyd depo a few there) this was strange.
I've heard of the V2 Tender Engine Green Arrow, but not a V3 2-6-2 Tank Engine. As for an odd one out, it's a toss-up. The LNER Saddle Tank Engine is an 0-6-0, and on the inner siding stands a GWR Prairie Tank Engine, who is a 2-6-2. So are both these different tank engines the odd one out? I'm not sure.
Ahh sorry to hear that mate - you have to be so careful with the pick-up wires! I'd contact Hornby, and see if they can offer a repair? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I feel like this is the junior of the L1 class. I was gonna say “remember the hornby version?” Until hornby made a L1, not a V3. Oh well. Still, nice review
Tbf the split chassy isnt that bad i always say if you look after your locos properly and dont do anything stupid to damage them they will last for a long time
They're not that bad when they work - but the axle failure is beyond the control of the user most of the time! Also, the faces of the wheels tend to warp away with certain Bachmann models, which causes drastic failure! I've seen this very many times, and I look after my models extremely carefully! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you might need to oil it. It could need a better grip on the rails. I don't know much really about model trains so what do I know. Could also be because you kept it in a box for so long
Thanks for the comment - all my locos are regularly maintained, so it's not a case of oiling it! The wheelsets on these have a habit of binding - I've seen it with many other examples - I think it's just part of the design unfortunately :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sadly not mate - they're far too expensive in my opinion - I can't justify the price, and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to either :/ Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Talking about tank engines Is Thomas a LB SCR E2 Class And Talking about LNER Was flying Scotsman a A1 but changed to an A3 and is the only of the A3 Class Gimme a heart and reply if I’m correct 😀
Oh yeah, I'm also wondering, What would you recommend me getting for a Starter Hornby Express Train Set? I wouldn't mind if it would be with Tank Engines or items you recommend me getting.
I am on discord, but I don't really use it! Hmmm - they're all good to be honest! I'd suggest buying one that includes a set of points, because they're more fun. Beyond that, go for what you like the look of, and what you can afford! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think I pretty much explained it - but the plastic 'spacers' on the axles have a tendency to crack, which effectively ruins the wheelset - it's just a nasty design unfortunately! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is that LNER Class V3 I have seen this locomotive in the railway museum in chappel walks but it isn't the same Class locomotive is class N7 locomotive 0-6-2T 69621 that locomotive I only seen them so if you want to buy class N7 steam locomotive in bachmann model you can I don't mind
Yes this is a V3 - yeah the N7 is similar looking, but quite a bit different - it's going to be Oxford Rail though, not Bachmann! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Wow, this model has so many errors!
That's why the LNER is my favourite railway ever

Great ideas - I have shown some of those in the past!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great vid Sam
Thank you! :D
Awesome Video Mate I used to have a bachmann james but the lead wheel broke i might get a V3 to replace Him,Henry
Ahh sorry to hear that mate - good luck with the V3 if you decide to get one!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
this is quite a nice locomotive! Now very often you see large tank engines in LNER green!
On a side note, has anyone made an OO gauge LNER V2 in the past 20 years?
Thanks a lot mate! I'm not absolutely sure - I think Bachmann have probably done some, at least in the last 20 years!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It was GWR loco 45XX. Yes I like seeing some old locos
Ahh right! Well spotted mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great review. Many thanks. My favourite loco.
Which camera are you using for layout on loco footage as I would like to do the same?
Thanks Andrew! I use a Nikon D750, it's actually not very practical for filming models, but I've managed to make it work!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Love the v1/v3 wish I could have one!
Thanks mate! I can recommend these, they're good for the price! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The same company in my home town of Darlington which built A1 Tornado and are building P2 Prince of Wales are planning to build a V3 after the P2
Ooh that's fantastic - I wish them all the luck!! :D
You are my favorite youtuber(and probably your only italian fan and subsciber.)Who knows?Bye!😉🙋
Thanks so much mate - that's really kind of you! haha yeah you might well be! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam another one of those great video of yours.
Please do a Bachmann hennery video
Hey Richa, thanks so much - I will keep an eye out for the Bachmann Henry! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam can you make a video about your history with collect locomotives where it started for you and what came after
Ooh good idea - I'll think about how i could do that, thanks a lot! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam not to be a negative Nathan (because I’m a boy) but the camera you used for the train view has a smudge on the lens
Hey! It's not a smudge, it's a crack from when I did the Yo-box drop test - not much I can do about it I'm afraid!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice review! I always like your videos :D Hihi, they’re awesome! I’m busy now with my new N scale track, better layout, scenery, bigger etc.
Roy :)
Thanks a lot Roy, that's very kind of you! Good luck with all the N gauge! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice review Sam, which website did you get the V3 model from please? I really want one, beautiful model.
Thanks a lot mate! It was a while ago - but I found mine on Ebay! Hatton's are selling them new though - link in the description! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
When you said that the wheel set binds up at around 12:03 was it a reference to only that model or all of this class, thanks I just bought one and I’m starting to worry about my purchase
My hattons one (The BR black one) I believe i only paid around 35 pounds for it.
Blimey - that's very good indeed! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It’s not just gonna be a replica, but it’s gonna be a whole new member to the class. Built by the same guys who building the p2 prince of whales
GLORIOUS STEAM
haha yes indeed! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains alright thanks for the advice😁
Hey! It’s very beautiful but how much did it cost?
Thanks William - all the prices are covered in the video! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Awww man!!, that is unfortunate
Isn't a V3 has a recent "Thomas & friends" character?
BTW do u know anything about a maroon class 53 with "falcon" written on it? Last month i saw it 3 times at the "Pit" (an old beat down switching station) in Budapest, and do British locos aren't so unusual at the "Pit" (Floyd depo a few there) this was strange.
It may well be - I'm not too sure!
Hmmm, not heard anything about that one - I'll have to look it up! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This locomotive is the basis of a Thomas and Friends OC(original character) Eric created by a user called WildNorWester
I've been hearing about him! I will have to look him up!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Yeah this is a lesser known one for sure! What do you think then?? Like it?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice loco v3!
Thanks Marco! :D
Great video looks like a great locomotive
Thanks a lot David - it certainly is! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam just tried to service my flying scotsman and can't put it back together again and the pickup wires have become disconnected
Oh well.
Still, nice review
haha yeah - though I do think the L1 was a better model!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I recognise this engine. One of Sir Nigel Gresley’s only tank locomotives, I believe.
Yes probably - I can't think of any others actually!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains The V1 was also a tank locomotive designed by Gresley himself.
Tomas Roberts The J50
Sam'sTrains The J50
The GNR N2
Great job. It almost look like Arthur
Thanks mate! haha yeah it does look like Arthur! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I don't know if it is. :/
I dont know if i want a v3 or the hornby j50. They both would look so good on the part of the layout that i want them too be on
On closer inspection i might go with a j50 because the v3 has too many issues for my liking
Ooh tricky - though the J50 is the much better model! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's Eric from Wildnorwester's Sodor: The Early Years.
Ooh is it?! I'll have to look him up! :D
I wish a new e2 could be built for tourist trains , i would love that!!!!!!
I know! That would be awesome!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Another good review.
Thanks a lot Nigel! :D
I think you might need to oil it. It could need a better grip on the rails. I don't know much really about model trains so what do I know. Could also be because you kept it in a box for so long
Thanks for the comment - all my locos are regularly maintained, so it's not a case of oiling it! The wheelsets on these have a habit of binding - I've seen it with many other examples - I think it's just part of the design unfortunately :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hey sam what is you favorite train/loco mine is the flying scotsman
Ooh good choice! I think mine's the Merchant Navy class! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Eric: Helloooo!
Gordon: Oh no Eric! You take whatever abomination you made and throw it in the darkest pits of hell.
Eric: No.
Gordon: Oh.
I just picked up a non runner of this engine for £20 and it is due to the axles being split
Did I see 5 tank engines and the odd one out was the black 0-6-0 at the end before thr rating???
Sorry scratch that the odd one out was the jinty I think because she's in BR green
Yes I think you're right about that - well spotted mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Can you do the LNER Peppercorn A2 blue peter and the LNER Peppercorn A1 tornado
That'd be awesome - I'll definitely look into that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Why you don't change the profile from Gadwall to Mallard?
I don't know really - not really thought about it! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the v1 the BR number 67664, in the black and I picked it up for £35
Wow that’s crazy - great bargain mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains it did have faults when I first got it. The back axle of the driving set came loose, and the whistle was loose and snapped off.
lovely lner tank engine and very sweet steam engine love to get one 😊
It looks really awesome
Thanks a lot Richard - I've included a link in the description if you're interested?? :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
thankyou my good friend 😊
The odd one out is the 45xx because it is from The Great Western Railway
Yes indeed! Very well spotted Shawn! :D
Hey sam can you review the new sterling single plz
Sadly not mate - they're far too expensive in my opinion - I can't justify the price, and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to either :/
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oops, some wheels slip there. Should have kept bullman on as a banker up the hill!
Ooh did you spot some?! Yeah Bullman would have fixed that ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I would’ve watched this hours ago but I’ve been stuck in Nottingham for about 6 hours in traffic in the way home :( great review though
Typical Nottingham!
Ahh never mind mate - typical rotten traffic! :/
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yaaassss a 2-6-2 my fave
haha awesome! I really like them too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Class v3 is amazing
Thanks Justin - glad you liked her too :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
there is a little bit of a spot on the camera at 17:40 if you didnt notice while editing.
haha nah that's a crack on the lens - it happened when I did the drop test!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hi sam!
Hey! :D
Talking about tank engines
Is Thomas a LB SCR E2 Class
And Talking about LNER
Was flying Scotsman a A1 but changed to an A3 and is the only of the A3 Class
Gimme a heart and reply if I’m correct 😀
Yes indeed, Thomas is an E2, and you're right with the Scotsman! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm only just wondering, do you have a Discord Server? Or you dont use it often.
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What do you mean by the V3 will have axle failures
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow, the locos were
.prairie tank
.J83?
.n2
. Random green tank engine
KOOTPGB
Well done mate - yes that's the lot!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome Video :)
Thank you! :D
