Hey Sam Yesterday I went to the Severn valley railway I've ridden behind (west county class) 34027 Taw valley up and down the line and today I went to Severn valley railway again but this time I stayed at Bewdley station which is between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth and I saw Taw valley coming into Bewdley station and it blew its whistle and its the best whistle I've ever heard. Also while I was there I saw their 14xx with an auto Coach. I've had a great time going to the Severn valley railway two days in a row. Sam I definitely recommend going to the Severn valley railway it is so nice there.
Hi Sam: I came across this and I know it is a historical review. The detailed explanation provided is extremely professional and the review of this model is very well done. I am now a confirmed Bristolian and have a railway library, which extols their performance as fast passenger locomotives on the S&DJR. Sam: Although Midland express engines, in the 1950’s they were down graded to secondary passenger duties and were particularly used as such on branch lines, as on the Gloucester Loop Line Barnt Green - Redditch - Evesham -Tewkesbury route, my family’s home. Shedded on the SDJ&R they were used as bankers at Evercreech and pilots from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth mainline. Note the size of the firebox and it will give you some idea of why in their prime they were regarded as 4P by the Midland Railway, the increasing size of carriages proved to be their nemisis. Well Done Excellent Review.
That Bachmann Midland Compound is a real Beauty Sam! You’ve really treated yourself well with it! How’s the Endurance Challenge going? Hope the 0-4-0 hasn’t failed!
Thanks a lot James - I agree, Bachmann did a great job! Feel free to check the endurance challenge out on Twitch - 114 miles and still going strong! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Lovely loco there Sam. Looks like Bachmann have even managed to reproduce the prototypes pulling power. In the 1920's when the LNER excelerated the Flying Scotsman service to run non-stop from London to Edinburgh, the LMS started running the Royal Scott non-stop to Glasgow in response. They tried several ex-LNWR and L&Y designs on the service, but settled on double heaaded Compounds instead to haul the trains until the purpose built Royal Scott class locos were built. And you got to give credit to the loco crews who manned them on those runs, a smaller and more open cab than the A1/A3's and no corridor tender for a quick crew change either - if it was you who fired the train out of Euston, it would still be you firing it into Glasgow Central, and you would have fired over Shap and Beattock summits as well. Keep p the good work Jon
Thanks Jon - they certainly have - I was amazed by the power of this, with no traction tyres too! Thanks very much for the info too mate, as always! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Crews on the Scot were changed on the down leg at Carlisle. Only a very few trains ran non stop. My uncle was a fireman based at Crewe north and this was a regular run for him.
That's a very impressive loco from Bachmann Sam, I can't find anything to fault it...It's quite incredible the high standard of a ready to run loco can simply be purchased off the shelf...an Excellent review as always Sam.
Can't believe that little loco has done 113 miles a ready. I have just found the same loco as that in a dusty box but with a different body and NO motor so I dont think mine will be doing 113 miles like yours. Thanks again Chris:)
Hi Sam, following your review I have just succeeded in getting this model for £65.10 NEW from eBay! I have been looking for a while now, and then couldn’t believe the price I got it for. Just like the Bachmann Midland Compound I’m CHUFFED!
Other locos shown in the running session were: LMS 2P in SDJR blue, LSWR T9 in BR machalite green, GWR City in khaki, GWR Earl in GWR green, LNER D16 in LNER black and another LNER D16 in LNER green
Yep that seals it, the Midland designs are 100% my favourite. Something about the smokebox door having latches instead of a central dart just looks so lovely to me. Going to start collecting these when I get a layout again! Jinties, Crabs and Compounds, oh my! :P
I've also been learning about my local railways and it turns out that a lot of the midland and later designs were used in Northern Ireland as the Northern Counties Committee, basically the same engines just regauged for Irish track but I have also noticed that they have a smokebox dart instead of the midland clamps which in my opinion ruins the look entirely haha. But of course these things were built for passenger and good hauling work, not for looks :P
I might have said this in a video before when you did an early Midland Compound, the prototype of the Class ‘1000’ is set on display at the Barrow Hill Roundhouse in Chesterfield.
You mentioned that the cylinders seemed so small. They're the right size, but the Hornby version is well over-sized, and it's one of the main faults of the Hornby loco. Note that this is an LMS-build locomotive. The Hornby one is a Midland-built locomotive, and the main way you can tell is that the LMS-built locomotives had a flattened dome cover, to keep within the LMS loading gauge, and slightly smaller wheels. They were never called the 1000 class, by the way. Bachmann created that name from the only member preserved, which happened to have the number 1000. When it was built it was a much different locomotive than what is preserved.
Im just starting to build up my railway again after a long time. I have lots of hornby track and am looking to buy some bachman engines. Will the bachman engines use the same controllers ad hornby engines? Or do I have to buy a new controller?
Yeah they should all be compatible with 12v DC controllers, unless they're DCC fitted, in which case you'll want a DCC controller - most new locos are DC though! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Midland Compound 4-4-0 was classified as a 4F probably either the BR period or LMS period. It was probably the strongest 4-4-0 at the time during the early 20th century.
I wish a model company would do a model of the Daily Mirror Midland Compound In 1959, the Daily Mirror chartered a special with their own locomotive, a Midland Compound due to be scrapped painted in a bright yellow and red livery However she was scrapped as soon as she was finished

Greetings from Canada, Hello Sam my friend, I'm enjoying my holiday. I most say, your Bachmann Midland Compound 4-4-0 Steam Loco is looking magnificent, very well detailed, great running performance and very strong too. I got a Bachmann Midland Compound too, the NRM version No.1000 in Midland Railway Maroon livery, I even tested her strength by pulling a long freight train, she wheel slips when she starts to pull the freight train, but she gets underway and finally moves them. The prototype No.1000 is preserved, apart of the National Railway Museum's Collection and located at Barrow Hill Roundhouse. I see 6 4-4-0 Steam Locomotives and the ones appear most in videos, are the LNER D16s I believe. Well done for making this video mate. 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 10/10 😉
Hey Jordan - how are things over there? Hope you're having a wonderful time! Really glad you like these - ooh and you lucky thing, having the maroon one!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Superb review Sam of an absolutely stunning loco. Yet again Bachmann delivers a stunner. It looked awesome with your rake of Maroon coaches. Another great addition to your fleet that's for sure. I look forward to your next video. Keep well and stay safe, regards Gary.
I agree Russell! They did to the LMS one, but it was NRM exclusive (or some similar limited edition run) so there aren't many :/ Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Yes it was actually in Midland Crimson released as no 1000. I nearly got one once but I thought £99 for a loco split from a set and no box was a bit much. They never did a red LMS one though, just black LMS
Hi Sam. I just purchased this model on Ebay (After watching this video, actually) and I'm wondering if there's a DCC decoder you can recommend I fit into this model? I think I've mentioned, in other comments on other videos, that I was gifted the E-link and railmaster software recently by a family member. I have operated some DCC engines before, but the decoder was already fitted.
The LNER 4-4-0 appears twice. Of course, when dust gets up your nose it makes you sneeze. How much dust does it take to cause a sneeze to erupt from your nose?
Hi sam. I'm just curious. have you ever considdered purchasing and unboxing 1 of the L M S 2 6 0 plus 0 6 2 garratts? i know that hattons and rails of sheffield do have them in stock, or if there isn't any they tend to get more in from helgin. but i saw 1 at the R O S stand at warli, and it certainly looks magnificent. just thought it may be some thing you may considder for a future unboxing session. Cheers, Nick.
I had a Hornby black one with the LMS logos on it from their Railroad range but this one looks nice if not more superior. Great review mate and I will be covering some Steam engine models from the end of October and November if that interests you? All the best Ash.
Ahh yeah! The Railroad ones are lovely actually - and probably better value actually! Glad you liked that, and it does interest me - let me know when they're up! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains The first one that is a train set will be up on the 26th of October and then November 2nd, November 9th, November 16th, November 23rd and November 30th are planned so far. That aside, there will be some rolling stock reviews as well that are related to the trains that I will be doing although I am being deliberately vague to avoid ruining any surprises :). Now you're doing my fave. The 4-4-0, although, my locomotives are all "American" types. I have 9 American units running my road. Thanks for sharing this. There is so much different as well as so much the same as the Americans.
Thanks Scott - yes I've heard them called 'American' before! My pleasure mate - glad you liked seeing something a bit different! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A beautiful locomotive! Guess I'll be adding it to my list of things to get hehe. A question though, if I may. I've seen in your videos what I believe to be the "HM2000" controller? How have you connected them to the track/power track? Asking because I'm planning on getting one myself, that and the fact that I'm still learning my way around things :) - Sebastian
Ooh good idea Sebastian -hope you like yours if you get one! I just use the Hornby power tracks to connect them - though you can solder directly to the track, if you can! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I see! Unsure if it comes with a lead from the controller to the track, so if you have a suggestion for what I could use (or where I could get such an item) that would be a great help :)
Hello Sam, ive noticed for a while that you have not reviewed a Class 125(43) HST. I would really love to see you review one. Thanks. Great video by the way!
Hey Steffan, thanks for the comment - I did review a 125 actually, the Hornby/Virgin one - hopefully you can find it on the channel?? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a mint condition, fully lined tender drive Hornby version I bought brand new in 1989. It will see service on my new layout. Chracterwise, it looks the same....as long as you don't look too close!
Hi sam, I requested a service video specifically for this loco but in the meanwhile I managed to remove the body and check the motor. I then checked the cogs again. Before this, the loco at a slow speed would just jult and wouldnt start even if I applied lots of power and in the forward mode there seems to be quite a noisy sound. It doesnt sound to unhealthy though. In reverse its fine. Could it be the cogs inside. If in responding to this comment there is something you dont understand, ask cause its midnight and its kind of hard to explain as well ;D
Hey! If you want to join the Sam'sTrains membership program, I do have a servicing video for this engine! It could well be the gearing - but a good service might be enough to solve it! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’ve never really understood why you don’t fit the detail pack - do you sell your models, and to keep them in good condition you just don’t fit them? To me, fitting the detail pack is my favourite bit of the unboxing! Another thing - the reason for the tiny cylinders is probably to make space for the large compound cylinder. They were hefty things! These locomotives were known for getting a lot of slip, due to very little of their weight being above the driving wheels.
Yeah I guess it's odd - I keep the models, I just prefer to keep them in original condition! Thanks a lot for the comment and the info - these certainly have interesting designs! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Can i remove the mechanisms on bachmann or hornby and leave the rest behind so it's wheels are free? I have a small setup of tracks with 10 locomotives sharing it and it's kinda small actually
@@SamsTrains idk how to do it, can you make a video about it? Btw u never respond to comments back then...i do not remember you responding to our comments 😕
@@SamsTrains yeah not to worry next time it's on the line you could have it and 'city of Birmingham' in the back ground with some workers or something. :) be a pretty neat detail idea I think.
Hi Sam can you do a review on a dapal/Hornby pug? You can get them from eBay . I'm talking about the flat fased ones tho the smoky jo ones There are black I believe you made the kit version of it.
Is the hornby pug discontinued then? I was planning to buy one for a shunting layout im building. If it is discontinued, ill just buy a hattons Andrew Barclay!
have you ever done any reviews on diffrent scales of model trains? i have a small O scale layout with only one engine and i thought it would be cool to finaly see people do reviews on O scale
The Hornby Compound somehow just misses it, while the Bachmann Compound looks the part. The Hornby model can only be Midland built because they are right-hand drive. While the Bachmann model represents the LMS built locos, which were left-hand drive.
Hey Sam I have a suggestion. Why don’t you make a video that’s comparing the Hornby version and the Bachmann version and you do it like the Thomas videos you did where it was the character vs their basis
Hi Sam. Very nice model, I'd be inclined to get one myself honestly, but I don't run much British stuff for my 2-rail. Still a very nice model that is. BTW did you get my email?
Thanks a lot Jonatan, that's great to hear you liked her that much! I'll have a look for your email - I can't remember seeing it though! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam! Can u get the Bachmann Bertie? i did like the video but one more thing. theres the Hornby Thomas and friends Express coaches for Gordon and James that r red and green Your pal, Duck :D
Hi Sam, Thanks. Yet again, an excellently prepared, produced & enjoyable video (as we have come to expect from you) & also, what looks to be, a great little model, from Bachmann. Thank you so much for all the excellent work that you do, in sharing your joy & love of model railroading & most especially, the focus that you place, on encouraging youngsters, to become involved, with our wonderful hobby. Finally, can you do me a favour please & just compare your new Bachmann Compound to your Hornby models of the same locomotive. After you have looked carefully at them all, please could you tell me if you think that there appears to be any difference in the building scales, that have been used by the two manufacturers. There has been some commenting/criticism on the net, in recent days, claiming that Hornby OO Scale is in fact smaller, than Bachmann OO Scale? There are lots of historic reasons as to why I think that this might well be the case (over & above the obvious one, that either Hornby or Bachmann, have been sloppy about gauging issues & that one of them is/has, simply been getting their calculations wrong. However, at this point, I'm just trying to ask a simple question amongst those of you who are closest to making comparisons in locos & rolling stock, just to see if there may be some grain of truth, in what is now, just an internet rumour. I must say myself, that I've seen some examples of this myself & from what I've had placed in front of me, it does appear to be true (in those few cases, at least). Many thanks indeed, Andrew
Hi Andrew, many thanks for your kind words - I really liked this model too! Yes I'd like to do a proper comparison between the two - I think that'd make a very interesting video!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a mint condition, fully lined tender drive Hornby version I bought brand new in 1989. It will see service on my new layout. Chracterwise, it looks the same....as long as you don't look too close!
Thanks Craig - yes those were excellent looking models, I was always very happy with mine! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That has some of the best cab detail I’ve seen...
Yeah I know - it's amazing isn't it?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Ok thanks for the info!
How about doing a review of the bachmann Echo Valley Express set
Ooh that's a cool idea - I'll have to look at those! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hmmm bachmann midlands compound nice.😏😑😐😦😅 Hi samstrains how are you its hornby 0-4-0 tank still going or it hornby 0-4-0 tank derail?
Thanks Jackamus - I agree, they really are the best! Yes the 0-4-0 is still going strong - so impressed with her! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the same exact one, but it was custom made by someone who use to make custom models for OO gauge sets which sadly passed away
Oh wow - that sounds like quite the piece of kit to be treasured! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant review as always Sam! I'm sure you've been asked this a million times, but what is the best/your favourite loco you have?
All the best, Paul
Thanks very much Paul! I think mine would be the Hornby Bulleid pacifics, such as the Merchant Navy! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah you certainly can do that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains idk how to do it, can you make a video about it? Btw u never respond to comments back then...i do not remember you responding to our comments 😕
Great review of a really beautiful steam loco in high quality. Excellent Sam.
Thanks Norbert - I agree, really good quality on these! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great Video Sam and except the Livery a fine loco if it ever comes out in Midland I'd gladly buy one.
Did you know the smoke box door opens? This is a running theme for Bachmann's 4-4-0s.
Yeah!! It's such a cool feature! Did I miss that during the review??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yeah not to worry next time it's on the line you could have it and 'city of Birmingham' in the back ground with some workers or something. :) be a pretty neat detail idea I think.
Lovely model here. Interestingly, #41157 starred in Railway Roundabout. Seems as though she’s living on in this model.
Thanks mate, yes that's true, I watched that one recently actually! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Its a Lovely looking engine, isn't it Sam. I have never really thought about purchasing one but this makes me want to. Thanks
Yeah Thomas, they did such a good job with this one!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
There are some engines that I want to get that you have reviewed
Ooh awesome! Time to start saving ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Last time I was this early we still had the Big 4. Also have you considered the 3F from Bachmann?
haha!! Yeah I've considered it - I may get that one day!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Amazing review as always Sam.
Thanks so much mate!! :D
Hi Sam can you do a review on a dapal/Hornby pug? You can get them from eBay .
I'm talking about the flat fased ones tho the smoky jo ones
There are black I believe you made the kit version of it.
Hey Douglas - yeah I'd love to actually, I'll look out for one!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is the hornby pug discontinued then? I was planning to buy one for a shunting layout im building. If it is discontinued, ill just buy a hattons Andrew Barclay!
The old ones what Hornby got from dapal are discontinued. But the new bigger ones are still being made
Fanks Sam remember the little ones not like the one you are doing the engorence run with.
Please unbox the Johnson 3F
I would love to do that one!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great video mate! That loco looks really good. Shame there aren't any still running. :)
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah I agree - we need to get her restored!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
have you ever done any reviews on diffrent scales of model trains? i have a small O scale layout with only one engine and i thought it would be cool to finaly see people do reviews on O scale
Yeah I've done a couple of O gauge reviews - feel free to look them up if you like! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I spotted the 37XX and 32XX, I like the Midland Compound and Midland 7F but that's about it as I love my GWR locomotives
Very well spotted mate - ahh that's okay - I'll have to do another GWR session for you soon!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Do 00 gauge locomotives go well in 0 scale traks
You mean between the 0 scale tracks? I've seen it done before, but I know nothing about it unfortunately!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Hornby Compound somehow just misses it, while the Bachmann Compound looks the part. The Hornby model can only be Midland built because they are right-hand drive. While the Bachmann model represents the LMS built locos, which were left-hand drive.
I agree Don, the Hornby one is definitely a little dated now! That's very interesting though - I didn't know that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yay, u finally put the Earl, and the City class on front of the same train, now they just need to run like that!
haha yeah I did! I will do that some time - good idea! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam I have a suggestion. Why don’t you make a video that’s comparing the Hornby version and the Bachmann version and you do it like the Thomas videos you did where it was the character vs their basis
That's a great suggestion - I could definitely try that!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Lovely loco and the best cab detail I have ever seen.
Thanks a lot Philip - me too actually! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Brill Sam and the engine appears two times is the S&DJR Blue 2p.
Thanks a lot mate! And very well spotted!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No problem my eye sight never fails. @@SamsTrains
How is your day going Sam?? And the locomotive is beautiful!!
Very good thanks Charles - how about you?? And glad you liked her! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
My day is fantastic
I would love to get one but first let's finish laying the track
Another great video Sam.
Thanks Chris :-)
haha sounds good Chris - best of luck with the track! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks Sam
Is the 040 running round at the time of filming this?
Noo fuzzy - I filmed this before I started!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Really nice thanks. Nice to see several locomotives at once.
Thanks mate! Yeah I like filling the layout up with them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The mallard compound reminds me of Edward from Thomas & Friends
haha yeah!! It does look a little like Edward actually! :D
If I click your affiliate link, will you get a bit of money even if I order something else?
Hi Richard, I think Hatton's will only track the page you land on from the click - thanks a lot for asking though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam! Can u get the Bachmann Bertie? i did like the video but one more thing. theres the Hornby Thomas and friends Express coaches for Gordon and James that r red and green
Your pal,
Duck :D
Ooh have they done a Bertie?? I'll have to look at that - thanks for the tip! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Dear Sam, this Loco is really nice but its a shame i run the wrong scale !

Ahh sorry to hear that mate - what scale do you use??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I use TT scale, check out my channel for Videos of trains and gaming
Sam have you done A2 vs Gordon

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam,
Thanks.
Many thanks indeed,
Andrew
Hi Andrew, many thanks for your kind words - I really liked this model too!
Yes I'd like to do a proper comparison between the two - I think that'd make a very interesting video!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could you send me a link to some of those
Yeah! The links are in the video description! :D
Can yo put a horndoy locomotive with linal tracks
I don't know about Lionel - it'd have to be H0 two rail, 12v DC... in which case, yes! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I went to the watercress line today I went on a nine f
Ooh that's superb! Hope you had a wonderful time! :D
