  • Dane Cook Interview (2020) | Inside of You Podcast w/ Michael Rosenbaum - EP 114
Dane Cook (Good Luck Chuck, Employee of the Month) returns to the show virtually this week to open up on the impact of these current times on his deep seated abandonment issues and anxieties.
Dane also expands on our previous conversation by talking more about the ways he counteracts his own shyness and how he approaches interactions differently with certain types of people.
We also get into the idea of not pigeonholing yourself into a character type on stage, his brick-by-brick confidence building, and the reason he hates finishing a project.

I’m loving this. Dane Cook is the best combination of humble and evolved and confident. It’s rare to see that. And damn, he’s looking good during quarantine! Thank you for this episode, Rosenbaumers! I loved his first interview, too.

Until listening to Dane's first interview on the podcast, I had no idea how much shit he went through with his family, especially his brother, and everything he overcame in his life. His first interview on the podcast definitely changed my perception of him, and this one solidifies my feelings that Dane is just a genuinely good dude. Loved how open he is in this interview, and how he describes the friendship he's built with Rosenbaum through the podcast. Definitely listen to what Dane says at the end on his personal feelings about the show, and connecting with people he may not have thought were interesting or had his own preconceived notions about. It's the same way I feel about the show, and what makes me a huge supporter of IOU.

Hey there, Raj: Remember the part in the middle where Dane is validating Rosenbaumers’ love for Sailing (by Cross), and how it’s like connecting with a person who was experiencing a real moment and deciding to create something beautiful from that. It was so well put.

mitsumeeshi Yes!!! I always love when an interview incorporates a reference to yacht rock. But Dane was spot on with his thoughts on music that survives versus manufactured songs that are popular for a moment, but forgettable.

Raj It’s so funny, I never knew it was referred to as yacht rock until I became a Rosen patron in March. Crazy, huh? That song, for example, “Sailing” - it’s important to me because it reminds me of a happier time. It makes me feel amazing. Like dreams are still attainable. :) xox

I just found a fully complete DVD box set for Tourgasm and within the first 10 minutes I was back in 2006. Its in my Top 5 movies, although movie purists will say its not. But it was the height of Dane's standup and he will always be a legend!

I have been listening - and now watching - this podcast for over a year now and i look forward to it every week. One of the reasons is Michaels style as an interviewer - natural, casual, talks to each and every guest as if they were just friends hanging out. Even if I have seen or heard the guests on other shows - I learn something new about them from. No exception here- I knew who Dane Cook was - seen a couple of his comedy specials and maybe a movie but my perceptions of him were based on just stuff you hear or read. After his first time on the pod I felt like the listeners got to know him in a way they never would have. His experience with his brother floored me. I found him like able, humble, grateful. After this interview I feel that way more so. I will now seek out projects Dane does and would love to see him do stand up he’s a good guy and I like to see this friendship developing. Keep bringing him back on to the pod Michael! And hey you guys need to write something together - buddy comedy maybe??

This episode was Surprisingly enjoyable and I’ve been purposely skipping this one and the one with Dax Shep. Forgive me I assumed they’d be so artificial or superficial or just not relatable lol. But both were really enjoyable to listen in on man, great stuff man. I’m listening in while I’m literally grinding(work in fabrication as a welder) and this really helps the day go by. I can forget the bitterness I have towards my work and think positive things, and bring that energy home to my wife who needs that too. Especially, in these trying times. Just kinda wanted to do as Dane was saying and act shamelessly on that thought or feeling for a change and just say:
“thanks fellas y’all doing something good here, great work”

I completely agree with not holding in your feelings about others, around the half hour mark. I've always said never hold back a compliment. Our words are incredibly powerful and saying something uplifting to someone or just letting them know you care about them can literally save their life. I can personally attest to this as a close friend of mine who has battled depression all their life confided in me that more than once a random kind word I've shared kept them from taking their life. You never know how powerful an impact you can have on someone with something as simple as a kind word. Also on that note, if you ever feel a tug at your heart that you should reach out to someone don't ignore it, I believe we're all connected and there are powers bigger than us that may be using you to help someone else.
