And as a result Plastic Surgeons stopped teaching the Ray Liotta, word has it that aspiring medical students will sneak into the cadaver room at night and practice the procedure on a cadaver as if it's Forbidden Magic.
Dane Cook was born from the first gay sex in 1954. He emerged from the river of blood running from Will Ferell's anal tearing whilst Norm MacDonald was eating a sandwich, for the stamina.
My theory: comedy is traditionally self deprecating, lack of confidence and awkwardness. Dane came out as a young, energetic good looking comic with confidence that didn’t fit the “traditional” mold. So naturally anyone that said they liked Dane (his fans) got sh*t for liking that type of comedy.
The issue is that if someone is traditionally attractive then they benefit from the Halo Effect. The less attractive someone is, the easier it is to get negative feedback and harder it is to get positive feedback, which is critical in comedy. Comedians go across the country testing their material and delivery. If the audience is forgiving then they're never able to refine their material. To the general public they seem hilarious due to our cognitive biases, but comedians see right through it and resent them for essentially using a cheat code. You may be familiar with this, but nearly every time I hear a straight woman tell me who they think is a really funny guy that they know, its always a tall guy with good genes who makes lame, run of the mill jokes. Not to pick on anyone though, I know I listen more and find attractive women "more interesting" because my caveman brain is releasing dopamine.
Two things that killed Dane cook: 1. Ironically, the fact he really was self made, he did everything himself, did it with the INTERNET, which had NEVER been heard of before. A looooot of other celebrities around the comedy scene didn't like that. 2. He got too big too fast. Those old expressions like "the candle that burns brightest burns shortest" have some truth to them. We see it on UA-cam every day now actually. The videos that go from 0 to 100,000,000 views in a day never translate into real long term fans. Think Gangnam style. 3. And this was by far and away the killshot to his careers fucking jugular: HE STOLE FROM LOUIS CK. There's only like 3 comedians in human history who you could be stupider to steal from: Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, and then I'd say seated comfortably at the number 4 spot of people you should never steal from, oh look! It's Louis CK
I think that's a great point. He also made a lot of weird faces and noises. And someone with literally infinite confidence is probably psychopathic is probably

Theo does a genuinely exceptional job interviewing in this. This is a side of Dane Cook i haven't seen in other interviews. Really great questions and conversation all around.
This man was ahead of his time. Not saying he did things comics never done before but the speed in which he grew in popularity was untouchable compared to everyone else. Everyone had this man's cd back in the early 2000s. BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA took off.
It was before Twitter and such, but MySpace was definitely social media, and it helped propel him to the stratosphere man. That’s where I first heard of him, and we grew up like 3 towns away from him. Dane is such a weird, weird case study man. The exact thing that made him famous as a comic, his style of joke telling, is the exact thing that brought him down. The yelling, and in your face style is why ppl loved him, but it’s the exact reason they gave for hating him like a year later. So weird.
Never had the guy CD thought he was completely unfunny every time I saw him. His comedy always seemed forced. And that's just to me in my own personal opinion.
On road trips, when everyone in the car falls asleep, I will always put on his CD's to keep me awake. It's impossible to fall asleep when you are laughing that hard. Dane Cook will always be one of my all-time favorite stand-up comedians. Harmful, Retaliation, Rough Around & Isolated...chef's kiss.
Giggly Bits I think the painting is of Theo, not Farley. That Chris in the bottom right is in the spot where the artist signs the painting. The artists name is Chris.
@mellamosean It is a great movie. Justin Long and Ryan Reynolds make it work so well. The supporting cast is great also. Shit, I think I'm gonna watch it tonight.
Dane Cook jokes were the thing that connected me and my best friend for the first time. We met in high school and mentioned we liked Dane Cook and would non-stop quote his jokes. She was the best friend I ever had. She has since passed away but our high school humour will be stuck in my head forever. 💜
I never really understood all the Dane Cook hate. He had a really good run of being funny as hell. His jokes were definitely geared towards a specific audience and it was more about how animated he was and how vividly he could paint the picture of these absurd scenarios that he would come up with. It wasn't traditional stand up which probably rubbed a lot of comedians the wrong way but that uniqueness is what made it good.
He was the first comic to ever make me bust a gut with laughter. Got me through the teenage years. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'll always be a fan of his and grateful to his comedy.
To everyone complaining about Dane Cook plagiarizing Louis CK's bit Louis himself said, ""I don't think he stole from me knowingly... I think he sort of got some of my jokes in his head and got sloppy. He's a good guy and not capable of maleficence."
Louis is a such a standup guy (get it?) for saying that and I always liked Dane Cook even amidst the hate. He had a shtick that either resonates with you or pisses you off.
I think Dane Cook is terrible and Louis CK is pretty funny, but complaining about stolen jokes really is dumb. If you think you’re the only person in the world who came up with a certain joke all on your own, then you’re deluded. There’s 7 billion people on this damn planet.

I even remember going on a road trip with my ex and her mom and we listened to it the whole way there in the car lol. Nothing but love for him.
In my household, every time he'd be on t.v., I'd yell to mamma to put down the hot comb and come watch. N we'd sit around, laugh our asses off and enjoy the neck bones.
@@doyourownresearch7297 its the context behind it. not many black people listen or watch white comedians but hes saying that this white comedian reached him and his family. nothing more nothing less. stop reading into it.
I'll never forget seeing Dane for the first time. I was like 10 years old, flipping channels, and I came across his first special on TV. I remember that I had literally never laughed harder in my entire life... I genuinely could not breathe for 10 second stretches. My parents called to check up on me, and I answered during one of those fits; they thought I was sick or something. I always liked him, never really got the hate. Glad he's sharing his perspective and being received well these days
Dane's popularity tanked almost exclusively because he committed the cardinal sin of comedians - he copied jokes from other artists and passed them off as his own. That made him a pariah amongst his peers, and soured the traction he was getting with his fans. Rather than quietly apologizing and backtracking for a second, he doubled down on his attitude, putting the final nail in his career. It has nothing to do with his delivery, what he was wearing, or how "revolutionary" his act was. He brought it all on himself.

For the record, I think Dane performed them better, and if he hadn't gone full asshole when confronted with undeniable proof that he'd copied them, he would likely still be pretty popular today.
I'll tell you why I thought he was hated. Think of it like high school: Comedy has a history of being the domain of the underdog, the nerd, the kids who smoked weed behind the gym, people who looked a little funny, or got made fun of. It was where black people got to turn their negative experiences into something to laugh at, where women made jokes about living in a world designed for men, where people who couldn't get a date joked about their looks. Dane cook was the guy who had the looks, got the girls, had never been broke, but still succeeded as a comedian. For a lot of people, the thing he lacked was the relatability of other comics. he wasn't laughing about how the world had kicked him in teeth, he was laughing because life was good. Anyway, that's what I've always thought it was.
I was gonna say it's because he portrayed an alpha male in a world where soy boys were starting to flood the internet. In a way it seems like he might've been the first casualty of the emerging cancel culture.
I remember seeing him at a local college gig, maybe 2-300 people about 3 months after his Comedy Central Special. Dude destroyed it. Not 2-3 months later, he was selling out theaters, and stadiums not long after. A true enigma of the time.
Because 20 minutes after he got popular all of the annoying people at work started saying “I’m gonna get a saaangwich” at lunch time and telling the itchy butthole joke at least twice a day.
I can’t even tell you how many of his jokes I still re-tell or refer to. “I did my best! I did my best”, “why do I have so many keys? Did I murder a janitor?, “ I wants some treats”, and so many more… Thank you Dane! I love your humor!!
I dropped my daughter off at college and went back and cried hysterically in my car and moved the rear view mirror to watch myself cry 😂😂😭 Totally thought of this.
For whatever the reason, the thing that keeps resurfacing for me is his car alarm bit. "Seeeeeatbelts... Radio knoooobs, hel-LOOOOOOOOO, I'm a CAAAAAAAARRRRRR.... GAS-O-LINE-MAKES-ME-GO"....
it wasn't just other comedians man a lot of people found him annoying myself included, mostly because he wasn't funny, he was just loud. literally his punchline was him just yelling something, he wasn't smart or clever and didn't bring any kind of unique look at shit
Dane Cook is one of the funniest dudes I've ever seen. He's up there with the greats in my opinion. He had this awesome way of connecting with super nostalgic stuff that we all thought when we were kids. Seems like a cool guy to me.
Saw Dane twice. Once in Vegas during comedy week on a whim. Laughed til I cried. Years later in Milwaukee, smaller theater, laughed til I cried. After the show he came into the bar next door, hung out shooting the shit with people. Never hated him. Wondered what that was all about.
I’d like to add my apology to Dane cook here too. I loved him. He provided my friends and I with hours of laughter. Then, everyone started hating on him. I never actively participated but I did allow the feelings of those around me change how I felt about you. I was young. Now that I’m older, I realize what a mistake that was. But they can never take the good memories away. And there’s always time to make more.

Nah Ray Liotta is scary to look at.
Who's Dane Affleck
He looks like Will Ferrell and Norm Macdonalds baby
More like Michael Richards and Will Ferrell had a baby. I don't see Norm at all.
norm was the first thing I thought of..haha
Dane Cook was born from the first gay sex in 1954. He emerged from the river of blood running from Will Ferell's anal tearing whilst Norm MacDonald was eating a sandwich, for the stamina.
People age. Its not a big deal.
He got fat
Same thing for Justin Bieber as well
Two things that killed Dane cook: 1.
I felt that way, I remember hating him just cause he sold arenas of Christian’s and didn’t have rated r jokes, and his energy was annoying.

Theo does a genuinely exceptional job interviewing in this. This is a side of Dane Cook i haven't seen in other interviews. Really great questions and conversation all around.
I think he gave Theo and ME some insight into the human mind only a phenom could tell.
I was a young teenager in the '00s, and he was unfunny even with my immature tastes in what was funny or not.
Nah. People didn't like him because he aimed his humor at 13 year old girls and their single moms.
It’s obvious he was supported with a lot of money.

What jokes did he copy?
Because I’ve seen comedians copy his jokes like Gaffigan who stole the bathroom writing joke
I’m pretty sure he stole some jokes from Jamie Kennedy for one

These bits were all performed more or less verbatim 5 years previously by Louis C.K. and recorded during his "Live in Houston" set.
Perfectly said
Exactly. Marc Maron hated on him. That right there proves your thesis correct.
I was gonna say it's because he portrayed an alpha male in a world where soy boys were starting to flood the internet. In a way it seems like he might've been the first casualty of the emerging cancel culture.

He can be a little douchey at times but his imagination and analogies are so damn funny, in college I remember hearing the joke about everyone wanting to be overly helpful with a police investigation, and one of the characters goes “I was washing a dish and I heard the crash. Do you want to put the dish in evidence?” … laughed till I cried, especially with the ice cream “you will remember me forever” … dude is funny AF and so what some people just didn’t get it, can’t please em all
Tom Bradys little brother with a mullet interviews Dane cooks father
😂
The accuracy of this hurts
This man didn’t deserve the magnitude of blowback that he received. He really did make me laugh a lot
Is it just me, or does he look like he's slowly shape shifting into Michael Richards?
Looks like hes had a lot of botox done
I never even knew people didn’t like him. He’s always been a legend in my eyes. He’s a great comedian and the movie he did with Jessica Simpson was 🔥
Did Dane quit smoking with the help of Chantix?
D Porter you mean the repurposed psych med?
That shit gave me crazy vivid nightmares and made me mean as fuck in 3 days
Is he on meth ??.
D Porter I don’t shake hands
Ray Leota Joke guys...
People didn't like me because I wore ripped jeans, or because I stole my material. One or the the other.
Was looking to comment this! To see if anyone else remembered. That's why no one likes his material.
He did? I didn't know that he stole other's work
👍🏼😆😆😆
@@drunkass77 Really? It was a big deal in the comedy world.
@Gmoney3nt yes he did moron Louis said you might've stole them with out noticing but they were on Louie's show of course you're not going to see an all out brawl LMAO please educate yourself
Dane Cook, pay-per-view, 20 minutes, let’s go!
You have to call me Nighthawk.
That’s all I’m thinking about 😂
We were just talking...
@@Kingepticon Name's Dale, but you have to call me Dragon.
@@gerbil84ak Did we just become best friends?
I’d pay $5 on a Tuesday to see Theo Von and Dane Cook in a movie about a Magician and a Comedian beefing with each other.
My girlfriend got me Dane Cooks dvd for Christmas back in the day. We watched it all the time with friends over and over. That girlfriend is now my wife.
Gay
@@davidbahr9612 Agreed, that's the first thing that comes to mind when a straight man talks about marrying a straight woman.
Yuck 🤮
The cringe at that household must be unbearable.
“STOP comparing us to Dane Cook!!”- The Members Of Nickleback
That's fucking finny
Ah there it is
LOL
I remember laughing to tears through his entire special. Until my face and whole body hurt lol.
In college, we were dying of laughter while listening to Dane cook!!!
We even took a big trip to see him live, early on in his career.
"As far back as I could remember I always wanted to be a gangster "
TOMMY VERCETTI, REMEMBER THE NAME!
The alien skit and kool aid man , killed me when I was younger, fan 4 life
Heck yess
100%
That whole album was hilarious imo.. He was kinda like Jim Carey to me as a comedian.... He was the BEST at being something that you knew would just crash and burn with follower gimmicks
Just realised these are two comedians I actually paid to see live. Dane in the days when he went to college campuses and Theo last year. Well worth it .
You fix that wall before my dad gets home from work.
He's gunna beat me with a belt.
I never got the hate. I wasn't a huge fan of most of his standup, but Vicious Circle was his magnum opus. That shit had me rolling. DJ Diddles. lol
So.....you don’t understand comedy then? He has never uttered a funny word in his life.
@@SonnyGTA because comedy is not subjective at all
@@benjaminjoshua I think Dane Cook ran up in SonnyGTA's girl or something.
To all the clits of the 80s and 90s
@@SonnyGTA what's funny to you? John Oliver , Samantha Bee, Trevor Noah? Yoy indoctrinated troll
I'm glad people have gone a little back on the Dane hate. I loved him as a teen. His early stuff was wild. Drunk and screaming and really kind of absurd at times. Dane has always had an interesting act. Even if you think he stole jokes.
He made me and my friends laugh so many times in the car driving to school. He was only unpopular amongst the dejected with life open mic crowd I ran into years later around comedy clubs . He had talent and a good personality haters gunna hate .
4:17 "Yeah, it should be a movie, dude, and it definitely SHOULD be a movie
Nick Angelo LMAO
I lold
He was good in that Kevin Costner movie "Mr Brooks" look it up.
Agreed, good call
Only good part was the end of his role
313south✔ good flick
i forgot he was in that, that is a good movie
True. That's a great movie!
