Kevin Smith is one of the most caring and down-to-earth people in the industry. He will take a moment to acknowledge your existence and listen to what you have to say even if you have never met. He is so enthusiastic about life, he can make me excited about traffic. Much love Kev.
Kevin Smith inspired me to make short films, never give up. I was able to make a feature film called The Luring, a psychological thriller that’s now available on Amazon and this is because I’ve always loved indie filmmaking and especially Kevin Smith. He’s awesome!
So, what’s it feel like after all the practice & work is done, your dream becomes a reality? I mainly ask because Kevin Smith also inspires me. I hope to get a job soon so I can go to film school to learn to become a Director myself or that’s what I dream about all the time now, that along when I get my driver’s license so I can to any place I’d like to go.
I COMPLETELY agree with Kevin Smith's point about spreading positivity and a lean away from negativity. Having said that... the commentaries that he & Marc Bernardin did several years ago for each of the first 4 Batman films (where they're not shy about any criticisms they have) are some of the funniest material from him I've ever heard.
Kevin Smith has to be one of the most engaging humans on the planet. Ever since I first saw An Evening with Kevin Smith I can’t get enough listening to him tell stories
I met Kevin Smith last year and he is one of the kindest people to meet. He takes his time to talk to his fans. I talked to Kevin for over 5 minutes. When I went to get my photo op with him he said give me a hug. We exchanged hugs. Just one of the coolest people to meet. Michael I was going to meet you as well but you backed out of the convention. It was Fanboy Expo in Knoxville TN. I do hope to meet you one day. You probably had scheduling conflicts and couldn’t make it. I loved Smallville and you were my favorite character in the show. My favorite movie with you in it is Pool Hall Junkies. I seen that at the theaters when that came out
I've met Kevin at the theater he owns... And in my career I have met countless celebs. Kevin is literally, no question, not only one of the kindest celebs I have ever met but one of the kindest people.
Kevin is one of those humans that makes you believe you can do anything you dream of. And that's one of the many reasons I've followed his career for almost 25 years. He's a true inspiration.
I'm not one to add comments, but I need to say thanks, because it has been a complicated week, and some of the words in this interview, really hit home, so thanks for the show and the interviews and keep it grounded, human, thanks and have a nice day.
We need more time with you and Kevin, Rosey. There's such joy in this. Thank you...It's a rare pleasure. Will also just say, Inside of You is a beautiful, gut punch of a podcast. Thank you again for sharing and being genuine-
I have so much respect for how real, fair minded, & open Kevin Smith is. He makes so much sense & just warms my heart. I genuinely want him to succeed & keep going forever.
At 38:36 Michael is spitting pure facts about Rotten Tomatoes. The divide between critics and fans has never been wider. Mainly due to critics don't want to lose their insider access, gimme bags, and green room snacks for leaving bad reviews.
Definitely. Critics many times will go on and on raving about certain movies and I wonder how sincere they are. Especially during awards season they go really overboard in their praise. It feels like there is a contest among certain critics of who can fawn over movies and actors the most.
We saw this first hand with kevin smith's Master of the Universe. The critics loved it but the fans hates it. Heck kevin himself admitted that the reason why season 2 was only 5 episodes is because people didn't finish season 1, but won't admit that it wasn't very good and instead said that it was because 10 episodes were too many
I see Kevin Smith. I'll watch and listen. He pinpointed in this episode what makes him a good talker. Listening to comedians like Pryor and adopting that approach to be relatable to an audience. Love the guy.
Damnit these two have never tried to be heroes but they are both mentors and inspiration and this conversation is one I'll relisten to for ages. Nothing has given me more drive to go out and audition and not care about the outcome more. Thanks Michael and Kevin the goats
I just finished listening to this podcast and Kevin definitely opened up. You can definitely feel the passion that he has for film. Who knew that $3000 would change his career. He is a talented filmmaker. You can feel the love that he has for his parents. I enjoyed hearing his take on what he thinks about what is going on at the movie theaters. Thank you for such a great podcast.
I did not expect Kevin Smith to bring that specific point of view. It was really refreshing to hear how he's done his best to remove all the negative and focus on the positive. Dang this was unexpectedly so good.
Another cracking interview Mick. I love Smith and his work. I'm 45 years old but movies like Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob still kill me to this day. Love from the UK.
Absolutely! This is what I've been learning the past few years as well. Love watching channels like CinemaWIns that just exude positive energy and try to find the good rather than the bad. Any rube can find the bad, it's unproductive and boring and just creates a negative mindspace. If I'm gonna spend time explaining why something's bad, it'd better be something impoortant that actually impacts peoples lives (homophobia, fascism etc) and I try to limit it to situations where my bitching actually has a chance of making a positive difference. Not saying I always succeed, but that's the goal…
I'm actually concerned here. This attitude that almost demonises criticism which can be constructive and NEEDS to be done on some level, it's extremely shortsighted. Fair enough if YOU want to live life thinking the best about everything everywhere but that isn't the real world. You need to be able to point out issues and where things can improve, that's how we do better. I'm not saying we need to be overly critical but I think the idea that you need to turn your mind off and not look for debatable things in life is no better than looking for things to only criticize (2 sides of the same coin).
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Criticism and being negative is not the same thing. Also, like I said, I try to focus on times where my criticism has a chance of actually being effective - and are about something that's actually important: Me whining to you that I didn't like an episode of Doctor Who, or me whining about it in some comment section on Facebook, doesn't do shit. That just feeds into a negative mindset withoutt creating any actual change. I'm a teacher by trade. Of course I give my students constructive criticism. That's a situation where it's 1) important (they need to learn), 2) effective (they are hopefully motivated by my suggestions, they have a high chance of implementing them). Not spending your waking hours whining about things you hate doesn't mean you never give constructive criticism. Noone's saying you shouldn't gve constructive criticism. But being constantly negative without it being part of a strategy for actually creating change is just self-destructive. Any idiot can be "funny" by being overly harsh. Any idiot can find flaws in a movie they just watched. FInding the good stuff in a movie you immediately disliked - that's skill.
A million thank yous! This could not have come at a more perfect time, I have a craft project to do and I needed a podcast to watch.... and Kevin Smith is my go-to for just about anything when I need a distraction. ❤️🇨🇦
K Smith , from one Jersey Man to Another - met this man at the Buffalo NY Airport . Just simply getting coffee - the kindest interaction - will never forget it - thanks K SMITH
Got the opportunity to meet both of these guys on multiple occasions. Couple cons for Micheal Rosenbaum, live shows, a cruise, and cons for Kevin Smith, this was a great interview and loved seeing them together. Maybe a Rosenbaum role in the next Kevin Smith movie?!? I'd love it 😊
Kev is one of my favorite people in the business, always glad to hear him come on a podcast and half take over hosting duties. And I totally agree with both of them about hating exercise. I work out when I get done with my desk job every night, not because I like exertion or sweat or sports or anything like that, but because while working out sucks, having worked out feels good. Getting in shape sucks, being in shape is amazing. I’ve been a skinny nerd most of my life, having muscle tone and stamina and endurance feels amazing.
Dogma is one of my top 3 movies, seen it dozens of times. Up there with Galaxy Quest and Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels. Love listening to geniuses talk about their craft!
My buddies and I passed around a bootleg vhs tape of clerks for a long time. I have purchased many copies over the years. The view askew verse is great.
Yeah, I remember my friend giving me a VHS tape with Clerks and Reservoir Dogs…I was still in high school and those movies changed my life when it came to film fandom. My friend’s younger brother also used to email with Kevin directly in ‘94 or ‘95 back when he was active on his messageboard and really engaged with his fans.
“It’s your fault for putting interesting things on the wall”😂😂 I love Kevin Smith. He’s such a fun guy, watching his evolution since Clerks has been so wonderful!
What an amazing interview! The best interview of Kevin Smith I’ve seen so far. Must help to have an “insider” connection to him while remaining objective.
Kevin Smith is one of the most articulate people I’ve seen. Not to downplay his directing prowess (I like many of his movies) but I think he would be better at teaching people how to direct great movies than he is at directing great movies himself. Does that make sense? I do think he’s awesome either way
i met kevin at a con a few weeks ago and he was such an awesome dude gave everyone a hug when saying hi and a handshake after your pic with him really chatty and respectfully was a brilliant experience
The late Jon Schnepp directed the documentary The Death of Superman Lives! what happened? Kevin's appearance in that documentary is just great. Of course Comic Book Heroes that aired on AMC channel was so good with some incredible guests.
Love this podcast until the end of my life which is probably not far away, i see much similiraties to my own life. Kevin Smith is right btw, I spend millions of other people's money ( more correct term reinvest them) but not all of them investments bare fruit right away, but its odd because what people see as failure at the time most allways end up in long term relationships, but it's sad because the work and effort you put in to lay the foundation will allways be remembered as a failure. I don't know how to keep un going but this podcast has allways helped me navigate and understand myself better. Thank you!
For accuracy's sake, it's "All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again" but yes, it's from Barrie's Peter Pan. It's a really great line that can be applied to so much.
now I want to see your house! lol. Sounds like how i set mine up. And I'm always down for listening to Kevin Smith talk. Thank you for another great episode.
I ran into Kevin with his wife and daughter at LAX years ago, and he was the best! He signed my plane ticket and listened to me gush about how much I loved him. Seriously so sweet. Also have met him at multiple cons and he is so humble and nice!
I was at disney land about 6 years ago with my girlfriend and saw him there with a group of people. I told my gf "holy crap that's kevin smith!". I went up to him and didn't wanna bother him but had to tell him "hey Kevin Clerks is one of my all time favorite movies". He stopped, told me to get my phone out and proceeded to take a selfie with us and was just SO nice. I will never forget that.
He has such respect for movies he calls them film! He was directing when it was real film not digital or easy crap today I ve seen him talk on film making not movie making big difference great director great pod !a true icon!
I've seen Kevin a few times live and he does not disappoint. Such a great soul and I hope he keeps doing what he loves. Great interview as always Michael!
So happy to see this right now. My aunt just passed on May 19th and her last text to me was Clerk's related. I tweeted it and Kevin liked it. Made me smile. I miss her. Idk what life is going to be without her but it's lost it's vibrancy for me. Really trying.
I love how much he propped you up and encouraged you at the end, despite the fact that you live in a castle. :) Now I have to definitely drive up to Redbank and drop some coin at his Secret Stash or even catch a flick at his movie palace. Great interview of give/take. I hope Michael starts production of that movie soon.
You didn't even get to S**t talkin! I think that's the most your guest have ever talked, I better you had a lot more questions for Kevin. This episode had me feeling so positive afterwards
Good Will Hunting hunting season part 2 was a hilarious sketch in Jay and Silent Bob strikes back. Getting back Scott Winters to reprise the same role from the original film just pure perfection. The whole getting shot by Matt Damon's character with a shotgun LMAO.
I’d love to see Kevin Smith direct a Star Wars film, or Marvel or Bond film because you know he’d make it great and for the fans. Really enjoyed this episode. One my favs for sure. Rock on🤘🏼
Love you Rosenbaum. Incredibly articulate and engaging; a natural conversationalist. So glad I found this channel. And still my favourite Lex. I was 21 when Clerks came out, and I'm the same age, and thus generation as Kevin Smith. This brilliance hit hard. In 2004 I made a pilgrimage from my home in Canada, 467 miles to the Quick Stop itself, in Red Bank New Jersey. Such skill with language cannot be underestimated: witness Dogma. I twice was almost kicked out of the theatre for laughing too much. Yup. Cheers for this Michael.
My cousin introduced me to Clerks and Mallrats way back in 2000. I was hooked from the start on anything Kevin Smith, watched the rest of the movies that were out at the time and I have been following his carreer ever since. I love watching/listening to Kevin and I'm glad you got him in person for this podcast. His work means a lot to me but also the things he says usually hit home with me. Hollywood Babble-On is one of the best live Podcasts ever and he's having/recording a new one this Saturday with Ralph Garman can't wait to watch that.
You had Kevin Smith only talk for an hour. That is a feat only Lex could pull off. lol That man can talk and i am here for to hear it all. He is so genuinely nice like you Michael. Very fan friendly. i have gone to the movie theater he bought in Jersy often. Always has a smile and give you a moment with him. looks you in the eye truly listens to you for either 10 seconds whi a hi or ten minutes shooting the shit.
I was one of those people That told Kev his stupid movies saved my life. Not only that. Meeting him kickstarted me following and completely every fucking dream i had. Hell of a thing. To go from playing russian Roulette once a day, Every morning. To Straight up living my dreams completely. He would say that he had nothing to do with it. And maybe he didnt. But he certianly gave me a blueprint, and the kind words.
Kevin talking about not sharing things he doesn't like, I've heard him say that before, and I've seen people give him crap for it. But he didn't say he loves everything, he just said he doesn't TALK about the stuff he doesn't like. That's an exceptionally well-reasoned outlook.
Seriously one of the best. Episodes, guest, etc. I love Kevin Smith not for his talent, which he does have, but his refreshing honesty and humor. I'm trying to be more positive in my life and not promote negativity which feels far too easy to do these days. My only regret with this episode is it went by too quickly. Thanks for another great show, guys.

I got to meet him at the san diego premiere of clerks 3. What a nice guy
a very present human
I crossed paths with Kevin Smith back in early 2006 in Westwood. He was not a nice person.

Me too, man.
I dunno…the future looks pretty depressing, too. 😕
Kevin Smith could talk all day and i would never get bored.

That's one of his many talents. :)
That's good, Michael likes to talk about himself.

This is a great interview with Mr Kevin Smith. I'm 52 so i've been a fan since his early days. I love the man and the movies from the man. Great show!

Red State is a way underrated movie. Michael Parks should’ve gotten some recognition for that.
Dual roles in Kill Bill 2. Or the From Dusk til Dawn prequel where Parks plays Ambrose Pearce?

man im 40 and kevin is still teachin me new words, had to google Ameliorate
I met him 6 years ago. The kindest, caring man ever. So sweet. All I wanted was to talk to him, and he insisted on a photo. I'm so glad he did.
This is now one of my favorite interviews on this podcast.
Would be so cool to see Michael in a Kevin Smith movie
One of the best episodes. Time just flew by. Awesome!
Terrific interview…Kevin really is a top notch dude.
The conversation about the industry was awesome!
So happy to see this right now. My aunt just passed on May 19th and her last text to me was Clerk's related. I tweeted it and Kevin liked it. Made me smile. I miss her. Idk what life is going to be without her but it's lost it's vibrancy for me. Really trying.
I'm so glad the Kevin knows how much Clerks lifted us up back then. Great talk.❤❤❤
I love how much he propped you up and encouraged you at the end, despite the fact that you live in a castle. :)
Now I have to definitely drive up to Redbank and drop some coin at his Secret Stash or even catch a flick at his movie palace.
Great interview of give/take. I hope Michael starts production of that movie soon.
You didn't even get to S**t talkin! I think that's the most your guest have ever talked, I better you had a lot more questions for Kevin. This episode had me feeling so positive afterwards
53:21 I loved the whole interview, but this part is such a gem and a great life lesson.
I love Kevin Smiths outlook in life. L8fe is too short to worry about things.😊
Good Will Hunting hunting season part 2 was a hilarious sketch in Jay and Silent Bob strikes back. Getting back Scott Winters to reprise the same role from the original film just pure perfection. The whole getting shot by Matt Damon's character with a shotgun LMAO.
“ let’s just face it, you’re no longer that good…..Will Hunting.
Watching Kevin Smith take over every interview he’s in is always a joy
Great interview. Always love him, he's an inspiration. I saw him talk long ago at the San Diego Comicon and it's still a big highlight.
Another great episode, love seeing you two bounce off each other
I’d love to see Kevin Smith direct a Star Wars film, or Marvel or Bond film because you know he’d make it great and for the fans.
I could've watched this interview for multiple hours, its the easy to listen to and watch.
So glad you got Kevin on the podcast really enjoyed listening this week♥️ Michael you Rock!!
Thank you! I have loved Kevin Smith since I saw Clerks in the 90s. I would literally listen to him read the phone book.
That hour and a quarter flew. I love Kevin Smith. He's a gem.
I hope he comes back again some time. :D
Kevin talking about not sharing things he doesn't like, I've heard him say that before, and I've seen people give him crap for it. But he didn't say he loves everything, he just said he doesn't TALK about the stuff he doesn't like. That's an exceptionally well-reasoned outlook.
Nice of you to do Kevin's podcast, Michael.
Another great podcast. I have seen him at the NYCC always fun. Plus he is honest.
How did you manage to get an hour long interview with Kevin Smith? I'm amazed it's not three!
Editing? 😂
If there are more hour-long Kevin Smith interviews on this channel, it's what was edited out from this one. 😂😂
But saddened at the same time 😢
I'm surprised they kept it "short", they're both talkers. Loved it.
its called editing.
Kevin is amazing. He's always hilarious and thoughtful. I'm so glad he's living his best life.
