Rockhounded my first road cut today. Got milky quartz and clear quartz, only tiny crystals in small clusters. Someone had been there prospecting a big opening, they even left a wooden wedge/probe behind. I washed up my small treasures, but will still need iron out soaks. You taught me that, thank you!! Can't wait to take the next steps.
Very nice that you got some crystals. If you go back to that spot and look into the hole using a flashlight, inspect the roof. Sometimes, others forget to look up (when digging down) and the ceiling could still have nie crystals.
Wow! The first crystal, this is the first time I ever saw quartz like that!! Nice shapes like that. Usually they look like rock-rocks, these are very nice....especially that big one (cluster).....have fun!!!

Remember when we went up Bay lake in Latchford and I said we used to do canoe tours further up the river but it gets real sketchy? That will take you to Mowatts landing, right beside Lady Evelyn. Theres a guy that portages boats to Lady Evelyn from Mowatts landing. Far as I know, its the only way to get access. (At least with your own boat) or go west down hwy 558 in Haileybury to the end. (Opposite the West road on hwy 11) theres good fishing for Walley (blue Walleye) in Lady Evelyn, and Brook trout in Mowatt lake.

Also where the massive NorthBay72 fire was/went to. All the way from Bay lake up to Lady Evelyn. They evacuated the camps and stuff out there and closed the roads for like a month. It burned over 27,000 hectares.
Yes you can launch from Mowats Landing, I believe you can park at his place (semi watched car lot) for $10-20 can't recall, but there is a public launch about a KM away. The guy who portages boats around the dam charges $30.00 per boat, you get billed on your way out, unless you portage your boat/canoe by yourself then there is no charge. Mowats Lake is a stocked lake for Brookies, can be decent action but most are on the small side. I was told to contact you Ty Olsen (from meMiner) if I ever make my way to Cobalt, likely in the spring if that works?
I used to go to near there all the time. A friend used to live near Waub. And yes, you might have 😉 I would love to,go rockhoinding with you one day. Not sure when though.

Arrowheads are a sweet find. It has been a while since I stumbled upon one. Lots of good rockhounding in and around Georgia. A number of years ago, I did some dredging for gold near Cleveland, GA. I got some really small gold but some of the rocks/crystals that stayed in the sluice were excellent.

The way you reach down scratch some leaves move a little dirt and find crystals makes me believe you could pull a rabbit out of a hat. Bullwinkle would be proud!

I cant help but feel like a lot of ppl would be shaking their heads when I find a piece, look at it for 1.5 seconds and toss it like its a hot rock hahaha (if I had subs and ppl watched my videos, that is hahahahaha)

Hi meMiner, at around min 1.27 this pegmatite showed everything to study. Feldspar and quartz next to each other building a pocket with a crystal inside. Overlooked? And there is no mica. I would spend the whole day on this spot. Maybe it is the end of this vein you will find , or what ever the techn. name is, or it opens up. Quartz and feldspar crystallize at the same temperature-range in a pegmatite, but Feldspar never grows in Quartz. The perfect Quartz crystal prismen with top termination are found in pegmatites covered with some mud from gone Feldspar. Glueck Auf

I’m very interested.at a tender point in life of mid forties,I have rediscovered a childhood dream of metal detecting/archaeology and have realised quite profoundly there’s a lot more to it than just searching around with a detector,and discovering channels such as yours,has enlightened me as to the fact it is rather more extended than I recently thought...and in short,I’m so so fascinated by just the geology alone...many thanks for ur channell,it’s made me interested in pursuing a hobby again.
I like quartz crystals in clusters or individuals with a nice point - especially crystals that are doubly terminated (points on both ends). I am not sure about jewelry grade but suspect they cannot be internally fractured.
Im still strugling cleaning up crystalized stones what cleans what you need to do a cleaning video on what works in what stone or mineral. Great finds bud
Good idea. Cleaning of minerals can be complex. There are professionals who make a very good living preparing specimens. I wish they would document some of their methods. I should do some simple videos with tools and chemicals that the average person can use. I get a little scared of posting too much about acids because I don't want people, kids or pets to get injured.

If you know what crystal you are dealing with, sometimes you can troll a good discussion by googling the name of the mineral and "cleaning mindat". There are some experts on there.
My wife and I collect them this past weekend, we also have a bunch of Geothite pseudomorph after pyrite and Liminite pseudomorphs after pyrite I will toss in there for you.
Hi Michael, My wife and I have watched all your video's just in the past few weeks. We think they are great, keep them coming. We are new in the field of any type of rock collecting. So watching your video's have been helping. One video I saw just the other day was talking about your gold claim in B.C . Is it hard to get a claim in B.C? And do they have claims like placier gold claims in Ontario you can purchase? We would like to try gold panning, do you know of any places in Ontario, rivers or streams we could try? Hey Jeff. Who is Michael? Wrong channel. LOL Placer Gold in Ontario is difficult to find. Wrong geography for anything but colours. It is easy to get a claim in BC but I don't recommend buying one. There are so many for sale that are hopeless. If you are in Ontario, consider metal detecting for silver.
That would be handy. I was also thinking about finding an out of the way outcrop and drilling a few vertical holes so they fill with water before winter. It would be a good illustration of the power of freezing on rocks, as long as I am the first one back before spring.
Id set up a timelapse on one of my cameras for you if it didnt get to -50 and kill batteries in 20 minutes. However.. there are a few SPOTs you can go to in November/December when the first snow melts and starts to refreeze and if youre lucky enough, you will catch a giant piece of rock falling. Its pretty neat actually. But its from the snow melting and freezing in stress fractures or faults. It would def work to drill verticle holes. Be better to drill like 2" and fill em with water and plug the top with wood, but I think the water would freeze enough of a plug at the surface to still break it. Gotta find somewhere I can dig a hole for a battery pack or a car battery with a cell charger or something for the camera lol maybe battery packs and a solar charger? Maybe go to Townsite and Ill run a cord from home LOL Its an awesome idea though!
Lol I floated the idea of drilling pins with an eye at the top into holes full of water around good sized pockets, with a spool of fine copper line through the eye of the pin attached to a remote triggered model rocket so you can fire a copper line into a thunderhead and use lightning to steam blast open pockets, but so far, no takers....
It would be great if you could use some water to flush the pockets instead if jamming tools don't the whole aimlessly. Beautiful country!!! Excellent finding gallum from Lord of the rings. I bet that where the gold coins are barried? Lol
I have seen power washers used to break up hard clay by gold miners. I know someone with a small water jet that she uses on fossils. The problem in the field is having a large and handy water source. On a hot day, Daisy's heavy breathing seems strong enough sometimes to clean the dirt out of a vug if I could find a way to harness that power. ;-)

For sure, Beau finds some strange stuff on his adventures. Too bad I didn't have a camera on Daisy when she flushed a huge family of turkey. I could have reached out and touched the hen when she flew by me. Then there was a blast of little ones going every which way. A bit later we could hear the hen calling the chicks back from a few hundred yards away. It was quite the day.
I recently found out that there are places within driving distance of me to mine my own crystals! How exciting! Any recommendations around the Owen Sound / Kitchener / Port Elgin areas? I have been trying to find more information on locations and identification
I have not collected that way. We have an old family farm near Wiarton which the maps say has some exploring for tin that I would like to check out next time I am in the area. A good tool to start for any area are the maps on mindat.org
I didn't see any beryl. Not to say it wasn't there. Just didn't see it. There are some eastern Ontario spots for aquamarine, but not usually high quality. I have not heard of emerald here.
You need to be careful putting your hand in holes, there are rattlesnakes in Port Severn.My friend was bit by a small rattlesnake there and had to be rushed to the hospital, luckily he was ok.Use extreme caution when exploring anywhere in the Muskokas and Bruce Peninsula, especially in rocky areas where they love to make their dens.
@@meMiner they have become alot less over the years but are very much still around.My brother has a cottage on tea lake and has seem them underneath his deck and a small one got in his garage.
There is quite a bit of info online or old books/reports. Most times, the location is somewhat incorrect so treat it like a guide to the general area and expect to have to explore. In your research, especially focus on spots that are crown land without existing mineral claims....and especially avoid private land, park, First Nation, etc unless you have permission.
Feldspar is a wide group of minerals and can sometimes be wonderful minerals on their own. Give me a hint which country or location and maybe I can tell you what type of feldspar you might be able to find or associated crystals and locations
One of my best friends is from Lebanon, but she does not rockhound. It is a beautiful country. I looked it up and there are lots of interesting minerals to find. This link might help. For sure it is not complete, but might be a good start: www.mindat.org/loc-187662.html

I seen it at the top left of the video and wanted to yell look out ! but then my girlfriend would think I'm crazy so I figured I would just tell you in my comment. Sweet crystals you found there and the red inclusions are interesting, do you know what they might be ?
For sure, it could be done. I should have kept more of the broken pieces to give it a try. I think I will be back there before snow, so I will keep your suggestion in mind.
It's loud and unpleasant. Does there need to be a sound effect? I applaud your efforts with editing. Your videos have improved so much since you started. I don't like a lot of sound effects. But, of course that is just one person's opinion. Thank you for considering my feedback. :)
What a bummer, looks like either someone got there beforehand and used a hammer to gently gather some crystal, or you stumbled upon the shrine of the broken quartz god, it is rumoured that all crystal forms must be sacrificed, anyone who removes any unbroken crystal terminations or clusters will suffer a long and lingering demise by slowly being licked to death by a brown dog. Bad luck there mate, some people just have no idea about rockhounding and ruin all they touch leaving nothing for the rest.
I have bled for those gods more often than I care to remember. A couple of times, the rock face looked like a murder scene. It is like the cut from a razor.

I have had labs or lab mixes my whole life. My wife used to have a Jack Russell. That dog was a handfull - smart, energetic, demanding....

At around 6:25 you uncovered a sea shell....or something similar, maybe a snail shell?
Good spotting! It was a snail shell. The critter long gone, but his bleached shell remains....

It might be something called eisenkiesel. My theory being the red is caused by hematite.

Id set up a timelapse on one of my cameras for you if it didnt get to -50 and kill batteries in 20 minutes. However.. there are a few SPOTs you can go to in November/December when the first snow melts and starts to refreeze and if youre lucky enough, you will catch a giant piece of rock falling. Its pretty neat actually. But its from the snow melting and freezing in stress fractures or faults. It would def work to drill verticle holes. Be better to drill like 2" and fill em with water and plug the top with wood, but I think the water would freeze enough of a plug at the surface to still break it. Gotta find somewhere I can dig a hole for a battery pack or a car battery with a cell charger or something for the camera lol maybe battery packs and a solar charger? Maybe go to Townsite and Ill run a cord from home LOL Its an awesome idea though!
Lol I floated the idea of drilling pins with an eye at the top into holes full of water around good sized pockets, with a spool of fine copper line through the eye of the pin attached to a remote triggered model rocket so you can fire a copper line into a thunderhead and use lightning to steam blast open pockets, but so far, no takers....

I have seen power washers used to break up hard clay by gold miners. I know someone with a small water jet that she uses on fossils. The problem in the field is having a large and handy water source. On a hot day, Daisy's heavy breathing seems strong enough sometimes to clean the dirt out of a vug if I could find a way to harness that power. ;-)

For sure, Beau finds some strange stuff on his adventures. Too bad I didn't have a camera on Daisy when she flushed a huge family of turkey. I could have reached out and touched the hen when she flew by me. Then there was a blast of little ones going every which way. A bit later we could hear the hen calling the chicks back from a few hundred yards away. It was quite the day.
Quartz crystals is what im looking for here in Norway. Got to dig to find them.

I recently found out that there are places within driving distance of me to mine my own crystals! How exciting! Any recommendations around the Owen Sound / Kitchener / Port Elgin areas? I have been trying to find more information on locations and identification
I have not collected that way. We have an old family farm near Wiarton which the maps say has some exploring for tin that I would like to check out next time I am in the area. A good tool to start for any area are the maps on mindat.org

I didn't see any beryl. Not to say it wasn't there. Just didn't see it. There are some eastern Ontario spots for aquamarine, but not usually high quality. I have not heard of emerald here.
Due to recent storms in Santa maria I headed down to the bull canyon Santa Maria River bed and found white/pink quartz rock the size of my Fist

You need to be careful putting your hand in holes, there are rattlesnakes in Port Severn.My friend was bit by a small rattlesnake there and had to be rushed to the hospital, luckily he was ok.Use extreme caution when exploring anywhere in the Muskokas and Bruce Peninsula, especially in rocky areas where they love to make their dens.
I used to see them often when I was a kid but no more. Still, it is good to be cautious. They can be devastating on a dog.

How are you able to find these spots?
There is quite a bit of info online or old books/reports. Most times, the location is somewhat incorrect so treat it like a guide to the general area and expect to have to explore. In your research, especially focus on spots that are crown land without existing mineral claims....and especially avoid private land, park, First Nation, etc unless you have permission.

A bleached snail shell. Snail long dead. Live and dead ones were all over this spot.

Am having a big problem where i live in my country i find lots of feldspar but no quartz in or on or under them like not even one crystal
Feldspar is a wide group of minerals and can sometimes be wonderful minerals on their own. Give me a hint which country or location and maybe I can tell you what type of feldspar you might be able to find or associated crystals and locations

We have a few rattlers in this area, but they usually let you know they are there. I worry more about Daisy as she might try to pounce on it.

What a bummer, looks like either someone got there beforehand and used a hammer to gently gather some crystal, or you stumbled upon the shrine of the broken quartz god, it is rumoured that all crystal forms must be sacrificed, anyone who removes any unbroken crystal terminations or clusters will suffer a long and lingering demise by slowly being licked to death by a brown dog.
Bad luck there mate, some people just have no idea about rockhounding and ruin all they touch leaving nothing for the rest.
The exposed crystals were hacked out. I am sure some good ones could be found by digging and exposing fresh ones. Maybe next time...

I have bled for those gods more often than I care to remember. A couple of times, the rock face looked like a murder scene. It is like the cut from a razor.
