I've been interested in rocks since a kid on a farm with very rocky soil. We would "pick" clear rocks from the fields. Often I would spend more time studying the rocks than picking. Then in 1976 my college geology instructor got me into lapidary. I haven't worked with cutting and polishing since but seeing your channel ignites that interest . Every time I see rocks in landscaping or naturally I'm walking with my head down. Amazing I haven't been run over.
Thank you, that was very interesting what you said. 45 years ago when I lived in NYC I took a lapidary class from someone in Rockland County & loved Rockland County so much that I bought a home there.
A pirates ☠️ life for me! I've been a urban rock liberator for years. Soo wonderful to know there are more of us out there! A few years back,a Dr's lot, I came across a large area, in the back of the lot, full of tourquise. I left a few there. You just never know what you may find! YO HO YO HO... 😎
My family found a road lined with I think garnet! I want to figure out how to do something with them. I also want to get better at spotting stuff like this! I never would have thought those rocks he found were something
I died laughing! My best friend gets so mad at me because I stop and look every time I pass landscape rocks. "Come ON!" Not only are the rocks varied and beautiful but where I live, much of the landscape rocks contain 500 million year old skolithos fossil worm burrows! I love them! People are walking past half a billion year old fossils and don't care. 😂 I have a T-shirt that says "Wait! I see a rock!" for a reason.
@TweetyPAK7 re: your t-shirt... Just minutes after landing on the moon, Apollo 17 geologist Harrison Schmitt, while going through the post landing checklist, glanced out the window at the lunar surface and blurted excitedly, "Oh, man! Look at that rock!" I heard that live on the radio. I was 17. I hope he got that rock.
So nice of Ikea to provide a bit of rockhounding to its customers! Just before you put down your replacement rock I was thinking that Ikea management must wonder why they're needing to get more rocks all the time. Very thoughtful of you to make a trade. The cabs came out great! 😁
My nickname growing up was Pebbles . I live on the new England coast, Rockport to be exact. I have always picked up pretty rocks though now I te d to just take pictures of them lol! Much lighter! I live in my childhood home where all the rocks from my youth got deposited. This year my goal is to create a compass rose out of them! Love seeing your work and hearing the geologic history. Rock on! 💕
I was on the Connecticut coast one Thanksgiving. When we went for a walk on the beach after dinner, I (a birder) was delighted by the variety of waterfowl in their little cove, but what knocked me out were the vivid red and deep slate-gray stripes in the sand. My hosts told me they actually did like the Marianne of the song -- they'd often be down by the seaside sifting sand. The larger red and gray granules would stay in their fine sieve. Then, they'd run a magnet over it to pull out the gray bits, and voila -- lovely red and black sand to sell to local sand artists. They were bits of garnet and iron ore pounded out of the granite face New England presents to the Atlantic. I thought that was pretty nifty, but maybe they should have been arrested.
OMG, I grew up in Lanesville. So very glad I read your comment. I'm still near by, I'll run over and put my face to the ground and hunt. Rock on, back to you !!!
I'm guilty! I'm going to get a bag of rocks from my yard and take them to the parking lot medians I took from. My best ones came from a Chuck-E-cheeze parking lot!

I do the same thing, for fossils - Piles of pebbles destined for mixing into cement, yield lots of fossils, mostly broken Belemnites but occasionally a good long specimen.

After my Grandpa’s funeral, I took a beautiful rock home with me. No, I didn’t take it from the cemetery. I freed it from the hotel parking lot, it spoke to me, what can I say? It now sits on my fireplace mantel with other memory stones.
" I freed it from the hotel parking lot" You mean stole. I can almost guarantee you if you had gone in and explained it was to be a memory stone for your Granddad's funeral, they would have said you could have it. Now instead you have to try and rationalize something you did wrong by using words like 'freed'. We all make mistakes, just own it and move on.
@@SylvanApestop stealing oxygen, I'm sure if you asked Joseph Priestley he wouldn't care if you breathed. (This is meant to be a joke, it's just you sound so ridiculous about the rock)
@Koshka-cola So draw the line. At what point does it stop being ridiculous to be upset over theft? P.S. Many public beaches where I live have had to be protected by law - it is now a specific offence to remove rocks, driftwood etc without permission. This is because everyone had the 'I only took one' attitude and it was destroying the local ecosystems.
@SylvanApe but it's a parking lot. I understand where you're coming from, but how often are parking lot rocks actually taken? The location is much less desirable for memorabilia, and less likely people will have that "I just took one attitude." Plus the enough people having an impact to destroy local ecosystems already happened when they set the foundation for the store. If you called the police about a parking lot rock theft, would they even write a report? If it was a problem, wouldn't people have signs n laws stating like on your beach to not take rocks home? I suppose i draw the line depending on circumstances and location. Sorry lots of text..I'm an overthinker, also not trying to be rude or anything, but why choose to comment this here? So many threads who aren't people grieving a lost one are going about this topic.
@@Koshka-cola "wouldn't people have signs n laws stating like on your beach to not take rocks home?" Well, we do have a law against it. We don't have street signs saying 'Don't assault people', because it's basic and commonly known that it's illegal, like taking thinks that are not yours. "why choose to comment this here? So many threads who aren't people grieving a lost one" Because this is a prime example of someone deciding that their personal circumstance is an excuse for breaking the law. I understand the grief, anger, sadness etc people feel in different life situations, but I don't see that as a defense for breaking the law. The use of the term 'freed' to justify it also is an issue, as if the OP was doing something noble and kind, rather than just accepting it was wrong (albeit a very petty wrong that no one is going to lose sleep over).
Love the rock exchange idea! We have a lot of limestone and river rock quarries in our area-I've never understood why they don't set aside one pile just for us rockhounds and charge a few dollars each to let people "mine " them. Lots of cool fossils, agates, and geodes there going to waste! It would be a win-win for everyone!
My husband does an eyeroll when I look down at the rocks. I've been doing this since I was a little girl in Michigan.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing that!

After my Grandpa’s funeral, I took a beautiful rock home with me. No, I didn’t take it from the cemetery. I freed it from the hotel parking lot, it spoke to me, what can I say? It now sits on my fireplace mantel with other memory stones.
" I freed it from the hotel parking lot"
You mean stole.
@@Koshka-cola "wouldn't people have signs n laws stating like on your beach to not take rocks home?"
Well, we do have a law against it. We don't have street signs saying 'Don't assault people', because it's basic and commonly known that it's illegal, like taking thinks that are not yours.
"why choose to comment this here? So many threads who aren't people grieving a lost one"
Because this is a prime example of someone deciding that their personal circumstance is an excuse for breaking the law.
