I have been making soap for years, and I started selling it 7 months ago. I use tallow for all of my products I sell!! I LOVE it, and the benefits from it are so amazing!❤❤❤ Also, I love your videos! I don't comment very often, but I just have to spread my love for tallow!!😅
I have been binge-watching your videos for the past couple of days. My grandmother is in the hospital so while I am sitting with her in her room we have been watching your videos. My grandmother taught me how to make soap from saved bacon fat and beef fat from hamburger in 2020. She taught me how to clean it. She has a recipe from my great-grandmother on how to make lye, but I suggested that we use my lye from Bramble Berry. She says she wishes she had all the fragrances like today when she was a little girl.
That is so awesome!!! I believe it's so important to share and pass down our heritage. I started making soap 5 years ago with my mom, then with my daughter, and my granddaughter helped with the cutting and drying. I love that we've shared this with 4 generations!!! Would you be willing to share your great-grandmother's receipe for lye? Also how do you clean the meat grease to use?
@@marydunnington8001 There are two different ways that my great-grandmother made lye. The main thing is it has to be with ashes from HARD wood. One of the ways is to collect all the ashes and put them in a 5-gallon bucket and cover them with water and then let it sit 8-12 weeks. I have used PH strips to test it. Strain it and put it in a glass container for storage. When making soap you do not have to add any water when it comes to the lye solution because it's already added. She also has a way to boil it over an open fire to crystalize it but I have not tried that yet. I have young kids and don't want them around the fire pit while doing that.
@@marydunnington8001 Oh yeah I forgot my grandmother says to let the soap sit a little longer if you are doing cold process soap, but we have made it on the stove and in the crock pot. The hot process soap and it's worked out even better.
@ashley-cz1sl I'm saving up beef fat from hamburger to make soap. I plan to clean it a couple of times by boiling it in salt water. Do you use it at 100% of oils? Does it move fast? Thanks
I'm excited to see you making this discovery. I hope you'll stick with it. I think you'll find it's worth the effort. Quite a while ago, I decided I didn't want to use palm oil in my soaps, so I switched to tallow, lard, or a combination of tallow and lard. Great decision. Despite the high saturated fats, my soap is always slow to trace, and I love the way the soap performs much more than I liked palm. It takes a little while for the soaps to harden up, as you discovered, but I do end up with nice hard bars in the end. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us. I love your enthusiasm.
Hi Ellen, as a farmer’s wife I use tallow in 98% of my soaps. Love the stuff! I agree with the soap man’s comment below, it’s never the tallow that makes it speed up. Usually something else I did! 😂😂 Beautiful soap!
I love watching people making soap. I tried a couple of fancier batches, but it's too much trouble. I learned to make soap in the 1950's from my grandmother. Measurements were iffy, but it makes fantastic soap. I have changed very little except to measure things and I beat it with a mixer.

Awesome work thanks for recipe I had to add 5 oz extra olive oil due to my pot stick blender wasn't blending good I might go with a 40oz with oils maybe 16tal 14 coco 10 olive light only do 1oz essential oil used tea tree 1.45 and. 3 lemon grass but tea tree definitely very strong will use 1 oz maybe after it's cure time might not be as strong
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤ I hope to have success 🙌 I need to go non toxic..... So l must not use essential or fragrant oils. %100 pure. I truly appreciate your help.
Lard makes fabuolous soap. If you change an oil in a soap recipe, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc to make sure your lye ratio is correct.
Thank you for this easy to follow recipe. I want to try it for my first attempt at soap making. I just have some questions about the additives. What are the purposes and benefits of the clay, the colloidal oats, the activated charcoal, the sugar, and the silk? Also, since the purpose of making soap is to avoid chemical exposure, could you comment on the health effects of the fragrances.
Have fun soaping! The clay, oats & charcoal all have different skin benefits, I suggest a google search for a full list.. The sugar is a lather booster, and the silk gives the lather a "silky" feel that is so nice. All additves are extra, and you'll still get a fabulous soap without them.. As far as fragrance goes I only use Phthalate & paraben free ones, so I do feel comfortable using them. Or you can stick with essential oils only.
Cute swirls and I love that fragrance. A very nice one. Love tallow and I am a member of Essential Depot. Shipping is free right now on 7 lbs. of Beef Tallow. Cheers & Blessings👍💕
Hi Ellen, I’m looking for a good custom soap stamp that’s is rectangle in shape. I’ve only found round ones. Do you remember where you purchased the one you use in the video from?
Thank you for sharing this recipe. You mentioned adding salt, if wanting a harder bar. You did not add it in this recipe, but later found that the soap was soft longer than usual. Would this be a good reason to add salt to this particular recipe?
I am making this tonight. Watching your video bit by bit and following the steps. I have a question about the fragrance. During the several weeks of curing, doesn't the fragrance disappear?
I’m new to soap making, I’m on my 5th batch. I’m definitely doing this recipe, could anyone tell me what fragrance to use, I don’t see a link for it. Also, I’d love if anyone can tell me what are the additives for? Thank you! Love this video, plus her English is so clear and beautiful.
Ty for the video and recipe! Can I sub goat milk for the water? And if I want the bar white how much titanium dioxide would you suggest using in this recipe?
I have used goat milk in my tallow soaps. The lye solution turns orange, but the finished bars are white. I never used TD in my soaps. As long as the FO doesn't discolor, the bars are bright white
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you. I also ran the numbers in soapcalc to make sure I had everything right. Your recipe calls for 10 oz of water and saopcalc calls for 8.6. I know it’s a very small difference but I wondered why you increased the water amount?
Do you retain the aroma of essential oils in soap made with beef fat? I made soap and after I cut it into bars, the aroma lasted for 2 days. But then the aroma disappeared... is this a feature of beef fat? I tried the same essential oils in a recipe without beef fat and everything is fine, the aroma is persistent.
YESSSSSSSS! I’m going to try this and that scent sounds PERFECT! You increased the water with the lye. Do you think it could possibly be discounted to 8 Oz?
👋🏻 been kicking around the idea of using tallow in my skincare and I was in fact thinking of using it in soap. When you say homestead style are you saying you can create a hardened bar w/o the need for lye as the tallow has the natural salts? I am a bit afraid of lye so really looking for options not using it if possible.
I said homestead, because this recipe is a simple one. You can’t make soap without lye, there’s lots of great videos and articles about safely working with it.. I have a tallow balm video coming on Friday 😉
@@EllenRuthSoap Thank you so much! Hopefully so extra safety education will get me over my anxiety. A balm sounds lovely! Wonder if I can use the lilac effleurage I am currently making as an added oil. I appreciate you, Ellen!
@ellenruthsoap if I wanted to add goat milk to this recipe I believe I would reduce the distilled water? I 'm wanting to make my own goat milk and tallow soap.
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you so much for the reply and your knowledge. I really enjoy watching and learning from you! we just recently brought home 4 adult goats and 2 baby girls. Excited to get started making my soap. Just have to find goat milk LOL- until mine are bred and in milk.
Hey Ellen! I made a version of this soap with a few changes, I upped tallow to 50%, dropped coconut and olive oil to 22.5% and added castor at 5% keeping the 6% superfat. I lather tested at day 4 like you showed and although super bubbly and creamy, it left my hands very dry. Did you experience this? Is it because it hasnt fully cured? Ive read some things that say the coconut is too high but others that dont. With your coconut being even higher, I assume youd have a similar first test batch that Im hoping cured more conditioning.
My first thought is, did you run the changes thru soap calc? It might have changed the lye concentration. And I like to super fat at 5-6%, that really helps with any dryness feel.
I did and it adjusted the lye concentration. I also did sf at 6%. Im reading the dryness could be because the bar is so new and not fully cured? Did yours feel try when you batch tested for the video? Did it fix after curing time? @@EllenRuthSoap

Have fun soaping! The clay, oats & charcoal all have different skin benefits, I suggest a google search for a full list.. The sugar is a lather booster, and the silk gives the lather a "silky" feel that is so nice. All additves are extra, and you'll still get a fabulous soap without them.. Thank you for sharing this recipe. You mentioned adding salt, if wanting a harder bar. You did not add it in this recipe, but later found that the soap was soft longer than usual. Would this be a good reason to add salt to this particular recipe?
Adding salt or sodium lactate helps to harden the loaf for easier unmolding.

You can use CP soap for shampoo, but if you have hard water it can have a build up on your hair.
The fragrance is Winter Woods from BeScented, and the additives give the lather a really nice feel.
Ty for the video and recipe! Can I sub goat milk for the water? And if I want the bar white how much titanium dioxide would you suggest using in this recipe?
Yes, you can use any liquid of choice in this recipe. If you use a fragrance that doesn't discolor, you should get a pretty white bar.
I have used goat milk in my tallow soaps. The lye solution turns orange, but the finished bars are white. I never used TD in my soaps. As long as the FO doesn't discolor, the bars are bright white
Hi Ellen. Have you put fresh lemon juice in yiur soaps ? Apparently it lowers the PH in your soap. So you can wash your baby.
I've used citric acid, but not lemon juice💕
Ellen, may I ask what backdrop you use for your beautiful photography ❤
It's a wooden stand that my husband built for me. I've seen some "faux wood" vinyl backdrops that look really good..
@@EllenRuthSoap yes I was looking at those, wondered if that was what you had ❤️
Love your videos. How much charcoal are you using?
I use about 1tsp per lb of oils
That's interesting. I have not noticed that happening in my soaps..?
Hi Ellen,
What is the temperature a room should be for the 4-6 week cure time? I live in South Carolina and it gets super hot during the summer…
My soaping studio where I cure is about 68 degrees, and I have a large dehumidifier to help😉
How much essentials oils should I add?
Each essential oil has it's own usage rate, Bramble Berry has a good E.O calc
YESSSSSSSS! I’m going to try this and that scent sounds PERFECT! You increased the water with the lye. Do you think it could possibly be discounted to 8 Oz?
Yes, you could do a super steep water discount👍
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you!
So beautiful I love them and the video. You are the best with everything you give us. Ty so much
Thank you so much 🥰
👋🏻 been kicking around the idea of using tallow in my skincare and I was in fact thinking of using it in soap.
You could either do a full milk soap or milk in oil method.. Either way goat milk would be great in this recipe❣️
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you so much for the reply and your knowledge. I really enjoy watching and learning from you! we just recently brought home 4 adult goats and 2 baby girls. Excited to get started making my soap. Just have to find goat milk LOL- until mine are bred and in milk.
Hi Ellen, Can pig lard be used instead of the tallow?
Lard has a different sap value than tallow, so I'd run the numbers thru soap calc to double check the lye amount.
Do you microwave your oil or double broiler it?
I use the micro, but a double boiler would be great too.
Did it fix after curing time?

ph also at an 8 @@EllenRuthSoap
I’m just starting my soap making journey, first by binge watching lots of videos. My daughter an I have very reactive skin especially with fragrances which is why my first soap will be a tallow soap.. Can I just leave the fragrance out or will doing this affect anything?
You can leave the fragrance out 👍
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you for your reply, it’s very much appreciated
Ellen where do you get your soap stamp?
amzn.to/3O5VpLz
I’m sorry Ellen but where did you get your soap stamp?
Ellen, I bought some walnut oil for the balm, also. Do you know if walnut oil can be added in the soap oil mixture? This will be my first try and I don’t want to mess it up.😂
If you add or exchange any oils in the soap, you’ll need to run the numbers thru soap calc to make sure you’re lye is correct 👍
@@EllenRuthSoap ok, I just wasn’t sure if walnut oil is “doable” in a soap or if it wouldn’t process like other oils.
January 5 10 AM Ellen, her soap is that a greeny feeling on it and you can see the grains in it. Can you comment on that we’re just at a loss to how to address this issue. Can we still sell it?
I have a feeling you're talking about the colloidal oats.? If they aren't a super fine grind they can leave a texture in the soap.
I've found, from experience, that animal fats actually slow down trace so that may be what took you so long. I like the simple look in your bars.
You're so right, I was prepared for it to go super fast... But it was actually really nice and slow👍
I hv been making soaps about 5 yrs now i dont know if u can help me get some fragrances and colours for my soap making plz im a ylung entrupunire im having a hard time with fragrances n colours can u help
Nurture Soap and Makesy have great selections.
Have you ever used citric acid in stead of sugar?
I have a video coming soon with citric acid, but it has a different function than sugar.
What is the pH of this particular soap?
It's at 9 pH
Assalm.o.Alikum plz write Down fregnes name you add.
Can I use lard instead of tallow?
Lard makes great soap, but it has a different sap value. You’d need to run the numbers thru soap calc.
@@EllenRuthSoap I will, thank you
I made a 100% lard soap that was infused with cbd. It also had milk and cream. I enjoyed making that one.
Tried buying from be scented as that scent is on sale and there website isn’t working at check out. Also when we go to there contact us it doesn’t take the survey they have to contact them. Dang.
That's a bummer, I'd give them a few days and check back, it's worth it💕
This is bath soap ?
👍
Wondering if you find that high of cleansing number too much?
I have a bar of this in my shower and am loving it. You can always go for a steeper super fat if needed..
Ok gonna give it a try . Thanks
soaper's choice is best place to get beef tallow is 11.55 for 10lb.
Great info. Thanks!
Actually it’s a 7 lb bar…….still a great deal!
I got scared when you poured the lye into the metal measuring cup. 😅 is that a heat safe measuring cup you're using?
Stainless steel is lye safe and I really like having a handle on my lye pitchers.
Thank you @ellenruthsoap! ❤
Yeah it took me more than 10 mins on blending with 30oz
😍👌👌👌👍👍✌
