I'm an American but now I live in Florianópolis. Guga is a living legend here, and even brought up in random conversations lol. I see him a lot and he's always smiling and kind enough to take photos with some fans.
For me, that was the golden era of tennis. Legends like Sampras, Agassi, Federer (at his beginning), Becker, Chang, Courier, Kuerten, Kafelnikov, Rafter, Moya, Muster, Hewitt, Safin, Roddick.... a countless number of stars playing at the same era. Guga was a very talented player, not only on clay courts... a true legend with one of the best one handed backhand in the tennis history.
Don't forget coria and courier too. Nalbandian and Davydenko came in a little later I guess. But this era is pretty great too. Obviously the big four but then you had Verdasco who is super fun to watch imo, Gonzalez was fun to watch, monfils is fun to watch and more.
MY BOY. That backhand slice against Sampras is burned in my memory. For him to beat Sampras and Agassi back to back is one of the great feats of that era. And if we're talking best one-handed backhands in the game, Guga needs to be in the conversation.

Kuerten was all about versatility and creativity. His backhand was so powerful yet so refined, his power forehand was sharp yet his ability to use finesse and his light touch makes me wonder if he could have posed a real problem for NADAL. I guess we will never know. One thing is for sure, it would be a joy to behold.
To be honest, I believe prime Guga (2000\2001) would beat any player in history on clay most of the time (Nadal included). Maybe, maybe not, but you are right, it would be amazing to watch them facing each other.

Guga was always like that best friend you had in the best tennis in the world. A super nice guy with a very technical and colorful tennis. I will never forget the 2000 master cup, one of the best I have seen. A great one without a doubt! Players like him on the tour are missed.

Some of the best technique ever. Incredible footwork, and shots so well disguised. Hard to say if his forehand or backhand was more dangerous, which made him tough to play.
Luckily, I am Brazilian ams started playing tennis at 11 in 1996 and one year later I watched him win his first Roland Garros, it was amazing! No wonder he was my idol and favourite player, and also I loved the aggressive tennis he played and it was how I played too, always pushing hard with strong attacks. Nowadays my favourite player is Djoko but his style is very different, I prefer Federer's style but unfortunately didn't seen he play at his best because I was at the University.
