French Open 97.I started to play tennis at the end of 96 and this tournaments was a 1st tennis tournament i saw.

@@marcotita9204 one fair comparison would be what the have won at the age of 24. So we can have a better picture. Some players may have won more than Guga overall, but I'm talking about better performance at peak. That's the difference between being better or the one that has more titles.

@@HildonOliveira Yep. Most tennis fans don't know that. 2004 was the last RG before the Rafa Nadal eclosion in 2005.
Federer won AO, SW19, USO and if he had not lost to Guga, he would've probably achieved the calendar Grand Slam in 2004.

@@matheusvalestra2727 Year-End Number One is an achievement waaaay bigger than becoming number one per se. We have legends in tennis like Marcelo Rios, GS champions like Kafelnikov, Muster, Moya and Rafter that spent just a few weeks at nº1.
You need to be the most dominant player throughout the year, in such a way that no other player has more points than you at the end of the season. ATP used to call it "ATP Champions Race" back in 2000.
Only 17 players have this accolade in history.

@@jcsrio15 That's BS. To reach number one, you have to be the best in the past 52 weeks, which, if you do the math, means the best of the past 12 months.
For me, that was the golden era of tennis. Legends like Sampras, Agassi, Federer (at his beginning), Becker, Chang, Courier, Kuerten, Kafelnikov, Rafter, Moya, Muster, Hewitt, Safin, Roddick.... a countless number of stars playing at the same era. Guga was a very talented player, not only on clay courts... a true legend with one of the best one handed backhand in the tennis history.
Don't forget coria and courier too. Nalbandian and Davydenko came in a little later I guess. But this era is pretty great too. Obviously the big four but then you had Verdasco who is super fun to watch imo, Gonzalez was fun to watch, monfils is fun to watch and more.

One of my favorite players growing up as a kid, if not my favorite. Always loved his smile while playing and his style was just so unique with one of the best 1 handed backhands in tennis history.
Such a likeable guy and a true legend. Guga for life!!

MY BOY. That backhand slice against Sampras is burned in my memory. For him to beat Sampras and Agassi back to back is one of the great feats of that era. And if we're talking best one-handed backhands in the game, Guga needs to be in the conversation.

One of the best of all times. Great charisma, great energy, peaking in the toughest moments. Thanks tennis tv for bringing this.
Kuerten was all about versatility and creativity. His backhand was so powerful yet so refined, his power forehand was sharp yet his ability to use finesse and his light touch makes me wonder if he could have posed a real problem for NADAL. I guess we will never know. One thing is for sure, it would be a joy to behold.
To be honest, I believe prime Guga (2000\2001) would beat any player in history on clay most of the time (Nadal included).
Maybe, maybe not, but you are right, it would be amazing to watch them facing each other.

A SEMIFINAL DA MASTER CUP DE PORTUGAL EM 2000 que ele venceu o SAMPRAS e o SAFIN que brigava com ele pelo 1 LUGAR NO RANKING perdeu na SEMIFINAL , é um dos maiores feitos de um atleta que vi na vida . Some of the best technique ever. Incredible footwork, and shots so well disguised. Hard to say if his forehand or backhand was more dangerous, which made him tough to play.

Luckily, I am Brazilian ams started playing tennis at 11 in 1996 and one year later I watched him win his first Roland Garros, it was amazing! No wonder he was my idol and favourite player, and also I loved the aggressive tennis he played and it was how I played too, always pushing hard with strong attacks. Nowadays my favourite player is Djoko but his style is very different, I prefer Federer's style but unfortunately didn't seen he play at his best because I was at the University.
Proud to be a Brazilian when watching this! Nowadays I live in the US and just started to practice tennis here. I remember when I was a kid my nickname was Guga because of my curly hair very similar to him. All the Brazilians know for sure that Guga was one of the most inspiring sports players in our country.

Guga was always like that best friend you had in the best tennis in the world. A super nice guy with a very technical and colorful tennis. I will never forget the 2000 master cup, one of the best I have seen. A great one without a doubt! Players like him on the tour are missed.

@@suatkayatennis I think he did it in a simbolic way when he beat Sampras and Agassi to win Masters Cup 2000. I actualy think he's the only player to ever beat both of them in the same tournament (SF, F)

Eu conheço ovtemis aos 16 anos e meu idolo era Borg que era bastante ousado e frio pra saber ir à rede ou estar no fundo da quadra.Depois surgiu vc fantástico brasileiro e eu só ouvir falar até então em Ester Bueno.
