    23 years ago, and it looks like it was played today. The only thing revealing its age is the video quality. It's amazing how little has changed in the last 23 years in tennis. When you compare this 2000 match with tennis from 1977, now that looks like the Middle Ages. And of course Guga's backhand is marvelous, people can still use it today as instructional material.

      You don't even have to go back full 23 years from 2000 to see a huge change.. This level of tennis was already infinitely higher, more powerfuk and better than the one played in 1990... Safin would have wiped 1991 Jimmy Connors.. Kuerten would have destroyed 1990 french open champion Andres Gomez... But these guys could easily hold their own against the current generation.. I see Kuerten defeating Medvedev on clay and Safin defeating Zverev on hard courts in a good day

      The most impressive thing for me is how with a one-hander, he had no difficulty whatsoever with very high topspin balls. Actually, he loved those. Once he said something like he'd have a shot against Nadal in his prime. I do think so, exactly because of that.

      @@BrazilDan1You cant discuss this with Nadal fanboys. Of course we will never know for sure, but be it Djokovic, Federer, Wawrinka, Thiem or who ever, they all had weak spots which Nadal was able to expose.
      Djokovic plays very durable, but he has problems to constantly hurt people with on both wings.
      Federer had a huge 1st serve, monster forehand and very solid backhand (in his best days) and he moved very fast, but his backhand was compared to Guga one dimensinoal, same with Wawrinka, Thiem and Djokovic.
      Wawrinka had very solid strikes on both side, but he moved a bit slow and his serve isnt that good. His forehand isnt a constant winner weapon.
      Thiem similar like Wawrinka. Of course Federer and Djokovic are in their prime better as Wawrinka and Thiem.
      But Kuerten definatly had a total package which Nadal never faced in the form of one human being:
      - Guga was almost as tall as Söderling (Guga is 190cm=6'3"), so he can handle Nadal's spin much better;
      - he could constantly hurt opponents on both wings. Both were winner weapons and he didnt hit many unforced errors;
      - his serve was a winner weapon too, he hit aces like Federer or Söderling, others like Wawrinka, Djokovic and Thiem cant do that;
      - Nadal had the better forehand, Kuerten the better backhand, but still Guga hit overall more winners with his forehand then Nadal did with his backhand.
      Buttom line: Nadal is faster, better forehand, return and defense, he brings more back.
      Kuerten has a better backhand, better service and a better offense, he hit much more winner with his ground strokes but also his first service.
      What is so special about Kuerten is that he has almost the height of Söderling (who could handle Nadal's spin better because he is 193cm=6'4" tall), moves much better/faster as the Swede but has ground strokes with much more varity, not just nonstop this power hitting like Robin, but also many angles etc..
      Remember Djokovic, Federer, Thiem, Wawrinka etc., they are all shorter as 190cm.
      I dont say Kuerten would win! But i always said he would have been the best opponent which Nadal would have faced on clay, only a prime Borg would be there with them.
      At his best day, only extreme Nadal fans will say Federer, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Thiem etc. were as good or better then a prime Guga on clay.

      @@chrisbach1533 rubbish, and a very long one. so funny you say Kuerten is almost as tall as Soderling but guys like Djokovic is not tall enough, when Novak himself is "almost as tall" as Kuerten....which you don't say.
      Wawrinka when he is on, is better than Guga. Better everything pretty much, so don't try and sell others short just because you want to make your idol look good. Guga isn't as special as you make it out to be, otherwise baby Safin wouldn't have given him fits even when he was at his peak.

      @@Divvy21against a typical one handed backhand, sure. Kuerten uses a semi-western forehand grip, upside down, for his backhand. Wheelchair players, who have to hit a lot of balls above their shoulder, also use this grip. 5'6" Justine Henin uses the same. Nadal gets beat by players that can smack his high balls down. Nadal's balls often land short at the service line. You can watch Kuerten hitting winners off of shots like that in his French Open final highlights. In an imaginary prime v prime match, I would be rooting for Kuerten. For me, he is a more complete player, with every stroke being a weapon. Rafa's serve would get smacked.

The most memorable Australian Open for me with the epic Nadal-Verdasco semifinal and then the 5-set Nadal-Federer final. The best 3-set match Nadal and Djokovic ever played (Madrid, over 4 hours). Safin was such a great player, and I think he had a lot of potential as well he just wasn’t consistent and he had mental issues as well that were keeping him back. But I mean still very impressive record nonetheless, 6 Masters 1000s, Davis cup, World No.1 and 2 slams is still very impressive. I would bring him as the third greatest Russian Male tennis Player of all time I’m behind Daniil Medvedev, and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and I would say Davydenko is fourth.

      Finals. And of course top players didn't have first-round byes like they have today. And they were one-week tournaments, so plenty of matches in a single week. And they still managed to play full schedule, unlike today's players who skip so many tournaments due to fatigue, injuries or age. In other words, players used to have it much tougher back in the day.

    100% for sure this match gave Kuerten a boost for the upcoming French Open. He won his 2nd FO title a couple weeks later. Funny is those two did great things agains each other:
    - Safin was able to beat defending French Open Champion Kuerten at the FO 1998 in 5 sets, even if Kuerten was definately not in his best shape there, he lost in the weeks before on clay to Carlos Costa, Marcelo Rios and Cedric Pioline. But Safin's countryman Kafelnikov never defeated Kuerten at the French Open.
    - Kuerten was able to do the same. He defeated defending US Open Champoin Safin at the US Open 2002 in 3 sets, but Safin wasnt at his best there.

      A healthy Guga would've take many. It's a question of matchups and the BH technic of Kuerten of taking balls on uprising, using a lot of spin, etc would neutralize the main weapon Nadal used against Federer, the high and heavy topspinned balls on RF's Backhand.

    • @korayaptall
      @korayaptall 10 місяців тому +2

      @@medina2529 lol i would be curious to see if you can hit Rafa's top spin on the rise and with topspin back. I havent seen that with Wavrinka, Federer, Thiem. Maybe Gaswqet sometimes. But anyway, he has a weak forehand. So Nadal does not have to play the way he played Roger. New matchups mean new strategies as you say :)
