- "O Guga" - The legendary victory of Gustavo Kuerten in 1997 I Roland-Garros. Twenty years ago, Guga won his first Roland-Garros.
So we went to meet him in Brazil to talk about him, his life, his journey and his victory in 1997.
Guga, his brother, his mother, his first coach and so on, in a beautiful 20-minute video documentary. A rich and particularly moving content.

This is the official UA-cam Channel of Roland Garros, home of the French Open. The tournament 2017 will run from 22 May- 11 June.
One of the most incredible things about it is the unity around him. He always says "we won", "we made it", "what we achieve". I think that's the explanation of his great strenght. He was never playing alone, he was a family fighting together. So inspiring.
beautiful!
His brother, his friend too. They all saying "we this, we that..". Isn't that a huge lesson! A group effort, a group recognition, a group mentality. A group victory.
Did it start with they mom saying "We must be tighter now, it's a full on family pact of connection"? 'Cos then it grew.
Anyway, great great tale of achievements all around.
Ash Barty is very similar, she always uses we, talks about her team, her family, her culture - it’s so nice to see
I was 13. You can be sure, every french were supporting him. He was such a humble and charming guy, and we never wanted him to win the french open so badly. And he won. A joyful moment we all had at this time.
TOXRaizou Those are kind words, beautiful attitude towards a non-french athlete! I hope people here in Brazil learn such manners one day!
TOXRaizou Thank you for your support. That man inspires a lot of people here in Brazil. Hopefully in the rest of the world, too.
Guga's win was in an era when outsiders could win, and yet even this win was amazing, even for that time. He was ranked 60something and never reached a QF of ANY event before winning RG.
the guy was pure talent not many better than him ever
As a French, Guga is my favourite Roland Garros player. By far.
Impossible not to like this guy
Perhaps the most likable pro from the 90s and 00s.
@@Rrtnns all times
@@fabienj2389 right!
More importantly he was a fucking amazing tennis player
In Brazil he is known as the “human labrador” hahaha
one of the nicest tennis player in the history
"Labrador humano"!!!
I don’t know what you said, but I approve! 😊
@@cachi-7878 He said that "Guga is a human labrador and that when you meet him on the streets, hes the same simple and carismatic guy".
And I stand for that. I live in his town and heard some stories of his humbleness, even when noone was watching.
the importance of good parenting. it makes all the difference
Yes, yes it does. Which is why the traditional family unit is being so relentlessly attacked by the evil ones in power.
was watching the Standard 2 min. Roland garros Highlight Videos, then this Video approved.. incredible guy and Family, they say "we" not "I" or "him" every time, that shows a lot!
Even more than the subtitles, they translated some we for I. He's a human Labrador
Not just a fantastic tennis player but a fantastic person as well. My favourite player always Guga!
I’m Brazilian and was born in 1991. I can’t remember Ayrton Senna’s career and he’s probably one of the greatest Brazilian sportsperson.
But I do remember Guga Kuerten winning Rolland Garros in 97. He’s my childhood hero, my Senna. And undoubtedly one of the most gifted players to ever step on court. I hope to be alive and se another player so passionate about the game as Guga is.
I've been following Guga for my entire life. Such an inspiration as an athlete and especially as a human being
Beautiful documentary on perhaps the most likable player.
one word for those who do not understand portuguese, the captions are in first person, but most of the time even when he talks about the last game he says instead "I don't know how WE played so well" (as in me, my coach and family)
Beautiful short documentary. People from other countries must remind that tennis is far away from Brazilians reality. And Guga made every Brazilian get to know tennis and support him, like we all did for Senna some years before. He’s indeed humble and a passionate guy, that’s why all other players always liked Guga.
loved Guga, he was underrated, pissed me off that pro's were saying he'd be a one hit wonder, well he sure as hell proved them wrong.
He could've won even more if he didn't had so many injuries.
True, very true
It’s funny how, when you don’t know the story behind the player, a victory is just that. But when you experience these moments through the eyes of Kuerten’s family, it takes on a whole new meaning and you feel their joy and emotions. It’s quite something.
It could be a movie!!
It's a pity this isn't a full hour documentary.
they should make a movy about him! I think he is so inspirant!
Eu nunca vi um surfista jogar tão bem. Hehehehehe Parabéns Guga.
people who downvote this have some serious issues
Might be some Musters supporter though
God, I was so young in 1997 but now I see this and it brings me tears to my eyes to remember how happy I was when I watch this French Open, I was seeing one of the nicest players ever, I remember that I said who is this cool and nice guy. Big Guga 💙
The legendary Gustavo Kuerten! If you people know the tennis in Brazil, you will know how brazilian tennis player are strong deep inside, and you will know how amazing Guga is
This guy loved tennis with all his heart, i cried when he had to retired.
My all-time favorite player, I loved his energy!
Guga Forever! Beautiful playing style and the most likeable person to ever win a Grand Slam!! Notice how he praise Muster here; "among the 5 best players I ever met in my career", I think he is right, Muster is very underestimated these days.
Great champ, great person...with one of the greatest one handed backhands in the history of tennis.
Grande Guga!!
My favourite player back then!
So happy to see him still like the good old days! Sooo happy!
I saw this guy playing in his prime. Most entertaining player I ever saw and an all time great.
That one made me feel proud of being Brazilian. What a story! Destiny gifted me with the chance of meeting his mother. Humble and always himself, he still stands as one of my idols. He loved what he was doing and ran after his dreams. Part of what I am surely is because of him. Thanks Kuerten family!
I already met Mrs. Alice once in a restaurant, she was hading lunch with students of APAE (brasilian association of people with special needs) In Balneario Camboriu (State of Santa Catarina), I did not want to bother her during her lunch time, but when I was paying my bills she was there too and I talked a few words to her specially thanks Kuerten´s family for inspiration and for my surprise she was so kindy, talked for about five minutes with me and my mates.
Thank you. I have forgotten about Guga but he was one of my all time favorites and now I remember why. And now I know so much more about him. He is a beautiful person and so is he entire entourage. A perfect documentary, and I shoot video too. Perfect.
The most charismatic guy of all time ! we can feel both brothers are so nice guys.
Guga won an important tourtnament, but he also won hearts.

I've alway liked him, and his game. Now that I know him, I like him even more.
oh mann that was emotional , i was 1 yo back then and it's my first time to heard for him
Music 2017 is what happens when some people fall asleep on their laurels.
I was seven months
The best ..
Can’t hold back the tears. What a player and what a character! Obrigado Guga!
Very cool. I live in Florianópolis and Guga is basically a living god here, everyone treats him like a legend, knows where he lives, knows which malls his family owns, there's even the "Guga Kuerten Week" here. Not a day, but a whole week.
Such a good guy :)
wow real nice.
must've been a great moment for him to get the trophy out of the hands of Borg himself, who was on posters in his room when he was young....
I’ve lived in Florianopolis, same city as him, and you know what is cool? Is that he is the simplest, humblest and nicest guy you could ever met. It’s not unusual to met him in a very simple neighborhood bakery eating something and drinking a cup of coffee.
the "spirit" that make us Brazilians proud! Love you Guga🇧🇷
Caramba! Já são 20 anos? O tempo voa.
@@fszillner 24 anos agora!
so inspiring.. u can see how surprised he is even until now . He can't believe it even until now
That's what life churns out and makes of smiling, charming and yet very resilient people like Gustavo. Champions.
Like Senna
As we say in Brazil, Guga is the human Labrador.
18:29 Favorite moments when Borg smiling, and Vilas hugging, two past champions, friends, witnessing a great moment!
gotta love Guga. phenomenal on clay, watched it all and enjoyed it thoroughly while on a holiday in tunesia:)
A very special guy and a very special champion!! Saudações de Portugal
abraço para Portugal país irmão !!!!
this video make me cry.. Guga is the biggest brazilian sportsmen of all time. there is no question about it
Besides the athlete, you see a strong human being, very family oriented, and sure well raised. I have friends in Florianopolis and they say you can find him strolling around like he's never went anywhere, just smiling and talking to anyone who wants 50 cents of his attention.
What a guy!
The entire world loves Guga
A gente te ama guga!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉viva a lenda Guga🎾🏸🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
I'm a brazilian from the same region as Guga, was 12 years old at that time and must say that this guy is a true inspiration for us all. Brazil is not a tennis country, but he managed to elevate us to the top. Great tennis player, great human being, humble and also a fan of my dear Avaí (lol). In my heart, as a sportsfan, he only have one rival and thats the great Ayrton Senna. Thanks for the awesome production of this short movie - it brings a lot of good memories! Cheers!
Thanks official channel Roland Garros. And thanks gustavo kuerten, you re one of the greatest tennis players for ever.
i remember this game. several years later i saw guga on a NYE at a hotel in florianopolis, i was flabbergasted seeing him in front of me. was a great end of an amazing year for me.
Imposible no admirar a guga..tan grande y humilde a la vez..
The best brazilian tennis player of ever, his backhand was a masterpiece, his humble was clear, and he played with his heart in his racket. Awsome, great, great player.
This video captures Guga's motivation and spirit. Well done!
Jim
our greatest legend! (he and Senna)
E Pelé tb brother
Brazil is known as a football nation, but in my eyes, our true sport legends and the ones who better represented and inspire us are Guga and Senna!
Thank you for this mini documentary. Learning that Guga and his family lost their father at such a young age makes me understand that his triumph in 1997 was remarkable in so many more ways than just him being ranked no. 70 at the time, but the inner strength it took for him to get there. So touching and beautiful.
Guga represents a nice aspect of my country. He was always talking about “what we did” / “what we achieved”, fully aware of the fact that other people had also a crucial role in his career. He really loved the game, and people loved him because this.
guga makes you remember that when you love what you do and you have a dream, everything is possible!
I always loved to watch Guga play and really appreciated his humble personality. Watching him play and carry himself, he seemed to have that softness that is very endearing.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😊❤️
i miss watching Kuerten play. he was such a great player
He was always so much fun to watch. Obrigado, Guga!
One of the greatest of all time... Guga was one of kind you shone in a era of giants, period.
It´s impossible to not cry...
Guga was the last brazilian hero after Senna....
Guga was an amazing tennis player. I remember this day, when he won Roland Garros for the first time, and I remember the unbelievable two weeks he had. So grateful to watched these moments. Thanks Guga.
Eu me lembro desse torneio. O Brasil inteiro parou pra ver o Guga jogar! Todo mundo tava torcendo e mandando essa energia. Era o nosso moleque. O nosso campeão!!
Emocionante!!
Guga que DEUS continue te abençoando grandemente! 🙌🏾❤
Very impressive....charming ...a dream came true here !!!
Hard work, family and gratefulness. A man of value!
He's an amazing person.
Incredible history! Guga is an athlete unforgettable. The best backhand that I ever see.
Guga a lenda. Queria viver essa epoca
His RG back in '97 was one of most phenomenal journey to the title I have ever seen... No one expected!!
His brother seems a very nice person as well!
Got the chance to take a picture with him a few years back! Such an amazing and humble guy!
One of my idols in tennis when I played, 97 was one my best years in life and in tennis.
I just wish I could have had that special team around me like Gustavo had.
It’s so important to have people around you that supports you, believe in you and take care of you good and bad times especially when you are young.
The human labrador! The most happy and humble person I've ever seen! Thanks for this amazing film! I miss this guy on the court...
I was 11. He makes me discover and love this sport. He deserved a longest career... :(
Incredible video, incredible people.. specially the mother... without a husband and 3 sons made that happen!!!
Guga is my all-time favourite tennis player : fantastic player with a great personality- it doesn’t get any better ! 🎾👍🎾
beloved in Poland!
