My personal feelings are that the original recording of the song by Simon and Garfunkel was a cry for help for humanity and Disturbed's version is an angry cry because we are failing or have failed to listen and respond to it the the first time.
We can cry as loud as we can, unfortunately no one can hear us or just few can. Things did not change since 50 years ago, or 100 years ago. We are all in this cruel world and the world is not getting better. I was born in 60's and raise in 70's and 80's and the music have always been a cry for help, love, passion and understanding.Rare people can understand what this song is all about, and keep trying to put it some special genre. But this song is not in any special genre it is just a masterpiece that time cannot harm and move. Also older generations are now old enough to understand and share the meaning of the words, newer generations simply go for the rhythm not many can understand lyrics that have deeper meaning. Original song sounds like a fine wine, this version however is more angry, realistic and sad at the same time. Where have we been and what we have changed.......noting, we just get more angry!
@@spacejockey4746 First of all i am not that young as you think i am 53 years old and i as well lived back in the 70's. Saying that original is subtle i will agree, but the world have been changed since than. And it changed for the worst not for the better. Also the words in this song are strong and very meaningful for the all that are searching for the truth. Also i never said that original song is bad it was just a different era when it was written and sang,. Different times brings different sound, how days we need to shout as loud as we can so that someone can hear us, back in the sixties it was enough to almost whisper but even then no one who is in the power is listening.

There is a video out there of the Wauldbaum Fire in the late 70s were many of our FDNY brothers were killed, they made a video with the original version of S&G Sound of Silence.
Best cover around. I grew up listening to Disturbed, David is actually a VERY kind person despite most of what his music sounds like. I saw Disturbed live on my birthday last year. He spoke after this song about all of the people going through tough times. Those who feel suicidal, that there's always hope and someone out there to help. He mentioned how his misses one if his great friends Chester (Lead singer of Lincoln Park who sadly ended his life). I'll go a Disturbed concert any time they come to town from this point forward. So please don't judge this man by the way he looks, he's actually a VERY humble person.
This, Johnny Cash doing Hurt, and Whitney doing I Will Always Love You are, for me, the Big 3 of cover songs. Everyone else can only aspire to them. They took songs that were already good, and made them absolutely legendary.
I think this song transcends generations. The older generation likes the melodic version but they younger folks relate to the raw power of his voice. This is what makes music great. Even if you dont enjoy this version you have to at least respect the power in his voice.
I have to disagree on that. I'm 61 and grew up with the original Simon and Garfunkel Song. This version is unbelievable and strike such a chord in my heart that I did not feel with the original song. This singer is magnificent and this cover is absolutely amazing. I never heard of the band Disturbed but now that I know I cannot stop listening to the song. Great job and the best cover ever!!!!!!!!!
I remember when I heard the disturbed version of sound of silence, I was driving home from work and I had to pull over, I had to cry and smile at the same time. I never heard something so beautiful before
The lead singer (David Draiman) is classically trained. There's a video of him explaining the process of choosing the video and what when into making that cover. Was pretty interesting you should check it out.
I saw this performed live and it was probably the single best song I've ever heard sung. I've seen hundreds of concerts, even met David, by far the best performance I've ever witnessed. This man is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met.
In 2015 when Disturbed finally got back together they were part of the line up that year to Welcome to Rockville in Jacksonville Fla. I've always been amazed at his recordings since being a kid. Hearing David Draiman sing all his old songs and the. Ewer ones including sound of silence it's brings you to a whole new appreciation. The whole band is fantastic and Mike the bass gutatist can sing too but obviously they know David is just the best. Even his heavier songs like stupify at the end holding his note saying "darling don't you be afraaaaaaaaaaaid" just insane in person.

Your reaction to him cutting loose (around 4:15) is just a joy to watch. I'm fond of the singer and right here is a great reminder, when you combine a good vocalist with a good song.
Bara Robber Baron I went back to that about four times as I watched this. 😂 Her reaction was awesome at several points in the song. And her motioning for the drum in time, and her almost sort of proud fond grin. Love her!
"And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools, " said I, "You do not know Silence, like a cancer, grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells, of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls" And whispered in the sounds of silence" Written in the early 60's. But does this song not perfectly describe the world we've built since then? A world in which no one talks to anyone, a world in which people barely know even their closest neighbours, a world in which every pair of eyes is looking down and engaged only with one electronic device or another. A world in which social media dominates and which people are talking without speaking, listening without hearing. We think we're free, we're not, we're all imprisoned within our own walls of silence! I don't suppose for a minute that Paul Simon was writing it as a commentary on anything he saw coming, but it certainly has become a very apt metaphor.

Disturbed's version of this song is so strong... so imminent and fraught with warning... so dire for action and yet so sad and what could be with failure to heed the warnings... S&G's original was almost like "reading" a history book and the emotion conveyed was "Oh well...". Yes. As a gen X guy, and a Marine of the 90's, THIS is the version I feel in my soul. THIS is the version it always should have been.
When Simon and Garfunkle recorded this, it was like a whispered warning. When Disturbed recorded it, it was the rage of knowing the warning not being heeded. The words were prophetic when it was written. They are now the words of stark reality. We now bow to the Gods of electronics and the silence is deafening.
We may never find the true originator of this comment. It is all over the place. Some people even say it’s their “personal opinion.” It’s hilarious. Nothing but pirates.

I love this cover by David Draiman of Disturbed, I also love watching voice coaches listening to this song, the expressions on their faces just goes to show this is something special. I drive my family nuts sometimes, as I just have this on repeat and happily play it five or six times out loud, it just empowers me for the next few hours and very very few songs do that for me.
I absolutely loved the resonance of his voice, which was grounding, in all that space of lonely silence setting. He opened with a deep voice, carried it monotonously, as this lonely silence is monotonous, and downs you. But then! He broke open, at the word "flash", -just like a flash of light breaks darkness, his vocal opened, and made SPACE. So masterful! Singing, "You do not know" carried so much pleading outcry, and something of a master teaching, as he held the tone strongly, assertively. Progressively, he broke out from the darkness by switching to a higher voice, like wings, like an observer out of body, high above, observing himself below - so beautiful! Unreal! Then came his raspy voice, switching to metal voice, which expressed the ANGER, the DEFIANCE, and the UPRISING, THE FIGHT against the lonely silence. it was masterful! And he waved his fist, the determination, the conviction, expressing a STANDOFF, energy, elan! -The ANGRY FIGHT, and the metal voice was the best to express this with. - He ended the song with slumping downward again, folding back into the darkness, with his last word sung "silence", softly, defeated, but his vibrato expressed the silence reverberating. I was speechless. And found myself holding a fist.
I seen a review by another vocal coach and she said he used autotuned and focused on his lip piercing. She clearly had no idea what she is talking about. she completely missed the songs overwhelming power of emotions because she was trying to find bs to talk about. You! You didn't miss the power in this song or his voice. Thank you for truly listening to it. 💜🧚♀️
Ok whoever said this is auto tuned is stupid, auto tune nowadays means playing the song and fake singing, this is not fake I can tell... I've been in band, not orchestra but I still know they're playing all those instruments live and not faking it... It's easy to air, which isn't really playing btw, but it's not easy to fake playing a instrument. He's holding those mallets right and playing the Timpini right

Disturbed did their own interpretation of it which makes it beautiful in it own way that's different than simon and garfunkel's original. The original will always be legendary but this is by far the only cover of this song that I haven't gotten sick of or hated outright.
My son tried to get me to listen to this for WEEKS before I finally relented and listened. It's better than the original. The original was happy and up-beat. Disturbed turned it into a dirge, which is what it should have been in the first place.

This popped up in my recommended years down the line here for some reason, but it's reminded me of another song I'd LOVE to see you react to. Much like S&G's Sound of Silence was considered one of those "untouchable" songs untill Disturbed covered it, Mastodon did a cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven (arguably the most untouchable song of all time) and actually KILLED it. A must listen. Stellar vocals from Brann (the drummer) of all people, and a composition and tone that is somehow both distinctly Mastodon AND Zeppelin. Amazing, really.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.

"It's like a metal, a Heavy Metal voice coming through" - god, this was cute, in all honesty.

I think this song transcends generations. The older generation likes the melodic version but they younger folks relate to the raw power of his voice. This is what makes music great. Even if you dont enjoy this version you have to at least respect the power in his voice.
I like the original version, but I love and prefer this version bt Disturbed...
I have to disagree on that. I'm 61 and grew up with the original Simon and Garfunkel Song. This version is unbelievable and strike such a chord in my heart that I did not feel with the original song. I saw this performed live and it was probably the single best song I've ever heard sung. I've seen hundreds of concerts, even met David, by far the best performance I've ever witnessed. This man is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met.
I saw Disturbed live, and I was blown away by incredible David was live, if possible, better than their recordings.
I've heard this about his voice.

Love her!
"And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools, " said I, "You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells, of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence"
Written in the early 60's.

It's weird that you mention both this and Johnny Cash Hurt, because these are the only 2 songs where I like the cover as much as or more than the original. Disturbed's version of this song is so strong... so imminent and fraught with warning... so dire for action and yet so sad and what could be with failure to heed the warnings... 4:51 onwards “and whispered, in the sound, of silence”. Wow that gave me chills. So ethereal and melodic. And that final note! Love love love!
This is such a beautiful, insightful analysis. Thank you for writing this, it really touched me

HOWEVER....
You Are CORRECT! He studied to be a *Cantor* in his Synagogue.
@R. Toby...
Darlin, close...but no cigar.
He actually Trained to be a *Cantor* and his Families Synagogue.

Trained as a cantor, not opera... but if he ever did sing opera he'd kill it.
David Draiman could sing Mary Had a Little Lamb and make it awesome... Actually MASTERPIECE
Honestly I love The Sound of Silence more than 98% of things I listen to, and the majority of what I listen to is between Slipknot, WhiteChapel, A7X, etc. Disturbed of course, being one of my faves. So when I first saw they did it needless to say, I damn near went through the roof. I 100% agree it's one of the most well written songs of all time. Simon and Garfunkle's original version will forever be one of my favorites, but to hear Dave fo this was MIND-MELTING. Anyway awesome video, like to hear your inputs!
I love how it builds and then his Disturbed voice starts peeking through a bit here and there.... and then it just busts out.
I first heard Sound of Silence when I was 8 and was hooked to Simon and Garfunkel,,,played and sang it myself as a busker, then I heard Disturbeds version...and it brought me to tears...the Shear Strength,Power,Beauty...it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it!!!
I first heard this song during the gorgeous figure skating routine Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres did in 2016 and was absolutely blown away. your insights and thoughts on this was fun to watch
Can’t handle this song. It was one of the songs at my nieces wake. Rips me to shreds.
This performance is jaw-dropping.!
I could tell you were trying very hard not to cry. Completely blown away...
The video version is very gripping, very well done. His vocal transitions are amazing.
The moment he opened his voice such chills I nearly dropped my glass of wine 🍷....never heard this live before.... then I stated vocalizing when you did....on Pitch too woot!!!
I like how this singer takes on a journey from despair and frustration to full blown anger and range, perfectly fits the emotion of our world today. So much injustice, unfairness and suffering.
