  • Baldur's Gate 3 (PC, PS5) is finally fully released out of early access and it is one heck of a CRPG. Let's talk about how it is (so far) and how it helped me understand the appeal of Dungeons & Dragons.

Dude! I went so hard on the RP stuff when I had to delete my early access save.
One of my favorite characters of all time is Daniel Faraday, from Lost. It’s my gamer-tag name thing most everywhere. So, chatgpt helped me create a wild-magic sorcerer character inspired by him.
      1. Born into a scholarly family in Waterdeep, Daniel’s insatiable curiosity led him to the study of wild magic, a chaotic and unpredictable force.
      2. A childhood incident involving wild magic both terrified and fascinated him, igniting an obsession to understand and control its chaotic nature.
      3. Leaving home, he embarked on a journey to unravel the mysteries of wild magic, facing challenges and uncovering ancient secrets.
      4. In a village plagued by a curse, he used his knowledge to purify a wild magic nexus, forming connections and realizing his power to bring hope and healing.
      5. His journey took a dark turn when he was captured by mind flayers in the Underdark, setting the stage for his adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3.
I have like 5 chapters of prologue, lol!
I was digging the fancy-pants rogue bard you were describing. I’m sure that’s been fun!

I'll get it on PS5. I'll be a blue/Cyan Tiefling. The only thing I'll be missing, from my avatar, is my wings lol. Basically I can create my Blue Angel. Maybe there's a way to get some wings. I'm thinking Barbarian but not to sure. Maybe some kind of fighter/magic type. But I'm a sucker for a good character creator.

Most people actually like games like this. What they tend not to like is slow paced combat and lower quality production values thanks to smaller budgets. You streamline the combat, make it flow at a nice pace, and bring out the massive graphics and sound budget, and it's all of a sudden a lot more appealing.

Can you describe the coop experience a bit more? I'm a bit hesitant to play this game with 3 friends, because I'm worried that we'll split up real quick and everyone will get a splintered version of the story because dialogue is tied to the person that starts it, right? I remember trying 4 player coop in DoS 2 and some friends getting bored really quickly because of all the dialogue. How is the 4 player questing and dialogue in this game for your group?

    • @TheRealUcanUwill
      @TheRealUcanUwill Рік тому

@@D71219ONE I just started the game, there are 3 difficulty levels, on ''normal'', I dont find it that hard, DOS2 is seriously one of the hardest games I ever beat, I find this one a easier, but there is ''tactician'' mode, that I believe would be DOS2 mode. I did play DOS2 on hardest mode (not on single life mode, but next to that, it was brutal). DOS2 was almost like sports manager game, where you had to think out your party as a unit, everyone had to be a part of the bigger picture, if your party was unbalanced, you would be destroyed. On ''normal'', so far BG3 hasnt been THAT hard.
Personally, I find BG3 story far more engaging due to voice acting and cinematic cutscenes, I just get sucked into the story so much more. In DOS2, I cared about character backstories, but not much about what was going on, it was podcast game almost, I just loved the combat and challenge. THis ones not that at all, performances are so good. I would say, if you are into games more seriously, definitely do not skip this one for sure.
But yes, it is basically just DOS on bigger budget, everythings the same just bigger and cinematic now. I find loading times a bit long tho and it gets buggy while saving, like movement animations freezing, nothing serious, but it gliches a bit everytime I autosave.

Larian got the voice acting so right because they had their voice actors not just read their lines but act them wearing a MoCap suit. They also went all out on eyes. There is a phenomenon 'uncanny valley' where a character looks very realistic but the eyes look wrong resulting in a very off-putting experience. In a game this big, it's truly impressive that the writing is up there with something like Disco Elisium, tangibly descriptive and thought provoking. Don't get me started on the music.... I'm only 6 hours in but so far, this is my goty. P.s, I've never been into d&d, guess I'm a fan

It's so weird how much I resonate with this whole video. My friends tried getting me into Divinity 2 -- "seems complicated" "maybe some other time" "*something something* playing comfy game right now". I could tell the production value and everything of Divinity 2 was fantastic, but, coming from an also not-DND player, it seemed like a ton to learn.
So, Diablo IV is having a bit of a rough patch at the moment. I keep hearing the praises of BGIII and I could tell the quality of Divinity 2 was top notch -- so I'm confident BGIII will be a quality product -- even if it's not my main bread and butter sort of game. I hear that preorders of BGIII on PC will get the deluxe edition, so I preorder before its launch. I have still not booted up BGIII. I'm so nervous about learning the classes, the combat -- everything. I tried Divinity 2 just a tad and I kept getting my ass thoroughly whooped in the first major town after the shipwreck. It was intriguing, but it felt EVERYWHERE I turned in Divinity 2 was a mistake. I anger an army of thugs in the town -- dead. I crawl down a cellar to explore -- giant frogs (I think?) -- dead. I walk onto the beach -- brainwashed burly dude -- dead. I go down a different beach front -- alligators -- dead.
But it sounds like BGIII may be more accessible to my sort, and every day when I hear these impressions I'm more and more excited about hopping in.

I've been playing rpgs for 38 years, My grandmother introduced me to d&d she was a gamer infact my whole family in the 70s and 80s were gamers, from arcade to early consoles and PC's, her linen closest was floor to roof packed with boardgames. The first character I rolled at 5 was the king of jesters a rogue with a proclivity for chaotic good! I've played games my entire life, games are the opposite of work, there are worlds created I've lived in, I understood better than this one. Dungeons and dragons helped me navigate social situations it's grounded in solid rules and humans add chaos I had trouble understanding in rl. Dungeons players will always invite you BECAUSE everyone is equal and adventure is a dice roll away. I get the pop culture about rpg players and d&d stereotypes but its really just satire, in my experience there are so many valuable moments I would have missed just thinking Dungeons and dragons just isn't fashionable. Games allow you to fail safely in a world you understand, that experience is invaluable just from a human growth perspective alone. Games provide worlds you don't need a holiday from and in life that's ideal. Oh look weird d&d nerd spouting words on the interwebs! ^^^^ 😊

I'm not really a D&D guy but this game has made me appreciate it so much more. It's also shown, based on what some of the developers from other studios who've said we shouldn't expect consistent great releases such as BG3, that the gaming industry really is in a largely odd place for great games to be released and seen as potentially dangerous idols to follow. I think if anything, we should be marveling at games such as these, and taking inspiration to make future games that are just as fruitful for people to enjoy, rather than stifling great ideas.

Hi Jake - love your vids, thanks! Your comments were eerily almost my exact experience as well, except I didn't try BG3 in early access. I also never got around to D&D or Divinity, despite owning a couple Divinity games. As you said, just seeemed like such a large investment in time so I put it off. Have started BD3 a couple of days ago having never played a BG game before, and with heavy reluctance over turn based, and I have been blown away by the high quality production value I guess you would call it, terrific voice acting and artistic scene creations and so far overall a terrific game. I am still getting used to turn based, jury is still out on that for me, but I guess that is what helps to make this game so compelling. I also have a few current games that I am struggling to make enough time for: Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV, Remnant 2, Tears of the Kingdom, ESO, Dying Light 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Everspace 2 and can't wait for Starfield! Sorry for long comment :)

So, as far as early access and how the game has evolved, I really love how Larian was able to keep their promise and despite playing Act I a few times over the years (and creating countless characters) they made the game still feel really fresh and new. What's interesting is I knew BG3 was special, but they still exceeded my expectations and somehow made me newly hyped for the game all over again, when you would think my hype would've died down long ago in early access.
I got into DOS 1 and 2 after DOS 2 had been out for a bit, so it was all patched up by that time and experiencing EA with Larian was a great experience. Plus, I already know the mods are going to be killer for BG3, because not long after EA started there were already character customization mods that made character creation even better, so I'm pretty hyped for the next character I'll seriously play :)

An important thing to know about doing multiplayer, apparently the other players custom character will be stuck in your party forever there after. Even if they exit the game, there is currently no way to remove their character out of your party, so make sure you want them there for the entire rest of the game (keeping in mind you need the NPCs to be in your party to be able to do a lot of the main story line stuff).
