1984 was a very special year for me. I started summer camp at Camp Forty Acres in Wilmington, MA, my parents took me to Disney for the first time ever, & we spent almost the entire summer shopping for a replacement for our old 1977 Chevrolet Concours, which ended up being our beloved (& sadly departed) 1985 Dodge Colt Vista wagon. And THESE hot hits were burning up the charts!!!!
IMHO 83, 84 & 85 are the best years of the 80s decade here in America. Don't get me wrong, 81, 82, 86 and 87 are wonderful too, but those particular years probably were the best!
I remember listening to this year-end countdown back then and I knew that the chart placement was not correct; that is, it was not based on the US Billboard Hot 100. According to Billboard, the #1 single of 1984 was "When Doves Cry" by Prince. The rest of the Top 10 and the remainder of the chart were, for the most part, not correct either. Don't know why Casey Kasem's countdown for this one year (1984) did not match the Billboard year-end chart.

That was sensational! Where’s the Number One montage?
During the 1980s, only the 1987 Year End countdown featured that
