Super well known issue. I don't understand how some people don't even bother to do the most basic of research. Thanks for posting this hopefully more people learn about it
Agreed, had so many people reach out with blown head gasket diagnosis and 99% of the time it was oil filter housing gasket🤦♂️
@Zeiten Do you ever do mobile repairs for twin turbo replacements? Those things are a beast!
Mechanic= for people who are lazy to do their own work
This is why you either learn it yourself or take it to a bmw tech/ professional. You’ll know your in right place if parking lot full of bimmers.
Sure, but labor is still 4-5 hours 🤦
@@dereksbooks exactly and that’s where the satisfaction and happiness come from after! By doing it with your own 2
Hands!!
My forget the oil stains
@@dereksbookslabour shouldn’t be 4 or 5 hours on a oil filter housing gasket at least not on my e90 n47 2 hours max in a proper garage/mechanic 1 or 2 hours max That’s as long as everything goes smooth.
Exactly been doing whole rebuilt on my engine e60 2010. What a fucking beast, last thing i need to install is a new transmission and its literally new 👍🏽have done all labor myself to ensure that its done right, couldnt be happier...research and learn aboit your car and youd be surprised how much money you can save.
previous owner didn't even bother to maintenence it smh. @@edwardivakh6287
Just saw my oil leak EXACTLY here! I own a 2015 328iX. Damn!!!! You a REAL ONE for showing this. Learned a lot!!! #BeBlessed
I'm done dealing with the rip off mechanics, bmw dealership is the worst!.
This video is on point!. I appreciate you. Thanks!
Bro just saved so many of yall 💯 all the mechanics are pissed now
Just telling the truth🙌
Ain’t no mechanic pissed. We’d rather do a 3 hour oil filter adapter housing than a head job.
@j.gtheautotech8455 i agree, but there are shops out there who charge for head job and just do oil filter housing gasket 🤷♂️
@@j.gtheautotech8455dont lie yall hanging up once you hear bmw lol (most mechanics)
@Erics-bf8cs exactly most. but I'm not most. In my old job, 3 years at an independent shop that did it all we specialized in BMW and euro cars too., I was the one working on all the Euro cars because my coworkers hated them lol. I had recently switched to Toyota for more growth an opportunity. But BMW are was easier to fix than Audis
Yes tell em baby ! The truth ! I love you man no homo such a fucking honest mechanic !
Just trying to do my best to prevent unnecessary repairs, thank you🙌
@@Zeiten thank you man you have no idea how much you have helped me out alone, never mind all the rest of the people that watch you ! I learnt so much just by watching you work. I can tell you have been doing this a long, long time. Again thank you bratek
Happy to help, thank you appreciate your feedback🙌
I bought an e39 recently and had all the classic Bimmer oil leaks. I pulled the whole top of the engine off and replaced EVERYTHING...Every gasket...every hose and line...EVERYTHING....she runs like a dream and doesn't leak fluids like a dead, bloated deer on the side of the road anymore!🎉🎉🎉😅
This is EXACTLY what I have to do, ima do both the gaskets oil filter housing and cooler housing
👍
THANK YOU! My oil filter housing gasket is shot but I have an e46 so the thermostat connects directly to upper radiator hose. However I plan to buy an e90 this year so thank you so much for that heads up!!
Happy to help👍
Yeah lol one 328 I bought sight unseen almost gave me a heart attack. Figured it out quickly though.
I see it a lot🤦♂️ glad you did👍
Performance cars always leak oil. That's what the BMW dealer told me. I quit taking the car to him. He was an idiot.
If the bmw owner lets insincere mechanic fix this it will cost him a hell out of money. Thanks for the video.
Sometimes it’s just lack of knowledge or ignorance unfortunately
Oh no! I almost lost my money. Thanks for sharing bro 👊🏻
Anytime😉
BLESS YOU FOR KEEPING IT REAL
🙌
VAG products are notorious for this too. Mostly on the TSI platform and some of them come from the 2.5. On mid to late 2010’s TSI engines there’s a little valve that goes behind the oil cooler. That should also be replaced when replaced the gasket on the oil cooler
Shhhh don't tell people that how else are we mechanically inclined people supposed to get good deals? :P
Yes yes video save me so much $ dam gasket was leaking thanks bro for that video # 1
Coolant gets into your oil, thins it, causing the #6 rod bearing to spin. Totaled motor. If you catch it in time, don't forget to prime the oil pump before starting or you'll causing the #6 rod bearing to spin. Totaled motor.
Its really cool to know , it’ll help with my preventative maintenance list
people dont know the only way to blow the head gasket in these engines is by probably putting a bomb in there and blowing it up yourself 😂
I drove my N52 without a water pump and it didn't ruin the head. It ran limp mode. Try that in a Japanese car, and it will allow the engine to overheat and wrap the head.
What are you talking about they blow headgaskets all the time. Don't get me wrong they are strong motors but they aren't invincible.
Appreciate the tip, would you show a diy repairing the timing chain and guides for e53 X5
May be in the future but honestly i stopped doing this particular job years ago😂
I’d bet that shop knows. They’ll just happen to replace that gasket along with the head gasket when they remove it to get the head off roll. Every single N54/N55 that comes through my shop I make sure to sell those filter housing gaskets and the upgraded metal coolant neck underneath the housing to replace the plastic ones that always crack
This is good to know. Thanks 🙏
I never do a head gasket repair until I rule every other possibility out. Leak down test, compression test, radiator pressure test, dye, etc.
Having oil filter housing leak fixed on 2013 x1 as i write this.. good video info👍
Idek where the leak is coming from do you recommend taking it in or is this something I could handle at home?
This is true ! I just got my alternator changed due to excess oil leak of the seal!
Great design, keep up the brilliant work bm dub. 😂😂😂😂
Happened on my hemi, new the immediate cause especially with cars that have oil coolers, check those first guys
Exactly what happened with my 435i
Hey been watchin ur vids. I have an 08 N54 335xi and I keep getting a p0015 code can’t fix it . Changed the sensor(s) solenoid and still … can u help ?thanks in advance!!! Ps the car is heavily modded
if own 335I and see oil at back of engine, check PCV/intake pipe to turbo.. it's likely leaking a little oil. dealer will try to charge for a complete reseal ( why my car wound up on a lot looking for a new owner oil pan and VC gasket twice in 10K miles, and OFHG once)
Had an 1996 A4 quattro do that on me. Had a European shop to diagnose and they act like they didn't know. They wanted the car. I figured it out years later after my diagnosis skills increased.
Happened to me changed it and its all good
I have the same issue coolant mixed with oil after a full head gasket replacement wonder if this is the cause?
Had a mobile mechanic try and say my head gasket was blown that’s why my e46 kept over heating lol my grandpa comes out and tells me to turn on my car then turn it off then he looks at me and says “your fucking head gasket isn’t blown your fan clutch is warped “so we went and get a 20 dollar auto zone clutch for my fan and boom no more over heating don’t trust these mechanics do the work yourself that was 5 years ago an the last time any one besides me worked on my car
Literally spent a month learning abt the n52 before I bought it
All yes all BMW’s will develop an oil filter housing leak. It really is an easy fix. Don’t let it intimidate you. BMW’s are the easiest car I have ever worked on.
This just happened to me I freaked and ordered a brand new like from FCP euro $$180… I wish I would’ve seen this quick and easy fix earlier
love my e90
Omg!! Thank you😂😂😂❤
What about gas smell in the oil? N20 engine. Not much but definitely noticeable if you smell the cap.
I have an oil exchanger and oil in coolant. Could it be the oil exchanger and could I cancel it?
just did mine its so easy you may have to take off the micky mouse hose to get to that bolt underneath t
Classic BMW
I'm looking to buy 2006 bmw 325i an that was the 1st thing I seen besides the block leaking coolant
well that OFHG certainly looks easier to reach. I'll never say the E90 didn't have any useful updates!
I would switch to aluminum resivore also for power steering 🔥
So what do we need to do? Mines is leaking in that area and smoke is coming from it
Trans cooler does this as well.
Yes although in most cases oil filter housing gasket is at fault
Same with a blocked ccv, BMW say head gasket gone, but no
????Yeah I'm getting a leak right there too and whoever change the oil last did not tighten the cap very well so it was leaking there too so I had a rubber ring from that never got used so I took the cap off and put the new ring on hoping to get less of a oil leak...... Now I'm thinking I wonder if it's okay that I did not put a new oil filter in I just put the ring in and then retightened is that okay? To do I'm going to change the oil today but I need to drive it to go get the oil just want to make sure that's okay I'm sure nobody will respond in time I guess I'll find out.... what I'm wonder is when I tightened it back up because of the fact that it's still the old oil filter I hope nothing popped out of place or ripped
You’ll be fine, nothing to worry about
Some people just need to learn a thing or two. The stuff you see on the BMW forums is like, really dude? Something you're not mentioning and it's the fact they have no idea to mention it WHILE driving a BMW is just hilarious.
He does that to well
BMW said my valve cover was leaking but it was actually the oil lines from the turbos that’s were leaking
Me having no idea what’s going on 🧐 😂
We’re is the oil cooler ?
How does this happen?
I must ask, why does bmw route a coolant passage through a oil filter housing? Not the end of the world, but why?
BMW Excellence in Engineering
Fb Market place here we come😂 gonna get a good deal on a bmw😂😂
😁 sure why not👍
I take it this will
Cause the e92
To smoke as well then. Just ordered gasket kit for the cooler as it’s cheaper

Some BMWs are a nightmare
BMW design.
ok
Hi master technician. Does a 2002 BMW X5 3.0i have a transfer case actuator? I’m looking everywhere but can’t find it
Some do and some don’t, as far as I remember before facelift (2003) x5s were living just fine without transfer case actuators
@@Zeiten I guess this one doesn’t.
You start there and the oil/water heat exchanger.
Just did one of these today and had to flush the oil out of the tank
How did you get that oil all out? I've been cleaning it out for days.
@@edoza42first pour out all the coolant mixture out of the coolant tank by simply removing the water hose that sits beneath the coolant tank. then add just water and let the car warm up for like 30 minutes. After that empty the coolant tank again and pour water in again and go for a 20-30 min drive. after that you pour out the water again and add a coolant flush + water (there is one from liqui moly that costs like 10€ or 8$) then go for another 20-30 min drive. After that empty the coolant again and put 2-3 times water in so all the flush gets out and you can put your coolant mixture in. thats how i did it
you are a god!!
How do you avoid this is there a better replacement part or just keep up with the gasket
Gasket lasts for about 60k miles or 10 years, so I consider it regular maintenance, use elring seal fpm-px material
Thanks u mine was licking just now
This is probably one of the most modded parts amongst hardcore bimmer owners.
Will that make it say the engine is overheating, even tho the temp is not psst 250?
No, if it’s not overheating it’s not overheating🤷♂️
Yeah with my luck I'd buy one thinking it needs an oil cooler gasket, the head will look like surface of the moon.
Hi! do you then need to change the coolant after replacing the oil gaskets? Cause i'm changing my gaskets soon too. Thanks in advance!
Yes, or at least I’d recommend removing expansion tank and cleaning it thoroughly
@@Zeiten okay thanks 🙌
I always recommend this R&R before any other oil leaks
Bmw owners know that already.
So you are saying every single bmw owner knows that information, those who just bought their first bmw for instance, hmmm😂🤡
Do you think the uper radiator hose can be canceled to avoid this problem
I’m sorry, what??😂
Imagine replacing the head gasket just to find oil in your coolant in the expansion tank🤦🏻♂️
😬😬😬
🤷♂️
How did u clean all the coolant system from the oil ??
Drain, refill, bleed, repeat
My 254k mile e60 has been repaired twice. its common.
mine has this leak & over heating but oil has no coolant, i keep getting told it has blown head gasket by people im wondering if i should try that first
I'm pretty sure that's a blown head gasket
@@328iDaSleeper oil cooler gaskets were bad
I think the mechanic knows juat wants to make a couple extra bills
You saw his UA-cam 😂😂😂😂😂
My mechanic told me this wasn't oil in the coolant!
Replace your mechanic 😂
Cooling system under 15psi.. oil pressure under 30+ psi.. oil pressure wins
Simple fix, take out the engine and put in a 6.2l LS
That’s what I wanna do with my e92 😂
Or a 2JZ turbo.
This is why BMW stands for break my wallet
But is your engine knocking aswell? My n57 is knocking and I have metal pieces inside the oil
Clean the engine before it's too late.
Would this be the case for a 2008 bmw X5 E70? I was told but two different mechanics, i have a blown head gasket.
Oil is in the reservoir tank & coolant is leaking in the transmission. Smfh
In your case you most likely need transmission oil cooler replaced it corrodes inside and transmission fluid mixes with coolant, transmission fluid looks like oil in the expansion tank
@@Zeiten
I actually had the oil cooler replaced. Thats why im inclined to agree with mechanics concerning the head gasket being blown.
@BenIsrael well there is also engine oil cooler gasket and oil filter housing gasket both can cause mixture of engine oil and coolant, i recommended transmission oil cooler since you said you have transmission fluid in expansion tank
@@Zeiten Totally thank you for the info.
Does this make you bmw jus suddenly stop? Mines did, nobody can find the issue.
No, there are plenty reasons for stalling
Bmw biggest secret is out
I was told if a bmw isn’t leaking oil it has none lol
😁
I love this video, but I hate it. How can I get my $700 e90s if people know this!!! Blessings
It's an 8 dollar gasket.
This is why i buy Toyota. Yes there are a FEW with issues
Can someone please explain. Im looking to buy a used bmw tomorrow and would like to look out for but I don’t have a clue about what’s going on I’m this vid so if someone can please tell me what’s happening
What year and model you are about to buy?
What’s happening in this video is oil filter housing gasket leak (pretty simple to fix) sometimes gets misdiagnosed for much more expansive repair which is head gasket replacement (absolutely not necessary)
@@ZeitenSo if I get it right, oil leak goes to cooling system from the oil filter housing and all I need to do is to change gasket in it and refill coolant again?
Omg this happend to my e83 but it was because of the transmission thermostat cracked and failed and contaminated the reservoir. Bmw thinks up stupid ways to ruin your day
That happens too although not nearly as often oil filter housing leak. But when transmission oil cooler fails and mixes transmission fluid with coolant that can definitely ruin transmission so more dangerous failure for sure
@Zeiten I immediately changed the transmission oil right away and has been running good since.
I still don’t understand
Very neglected car has nothing to do with the car itself being u reliable
