    I have an E92 XI and i change the oil every 7k and add Liqui Moly Ceratek. I would add cleaning the MAF as well as it creates tons of idle problems if you have a vehicle with lots of miles on it and also the Venos solenoid filters on the left side of the engine. these are important to be cleaned and there is 2 of them, easy job.

    15+k intervals on these types of high performance engines is absolutely insane imo. Following that routine is just asking for long term engine problems. I do mine 2x a year before and after winter. I Also buy engine oil only when it’s half price as there’s always a sale on it.

      @Boozi88 Рік тому +8

      It's actually in the BMW manual and the textbooks of service technician courses for a very specific reason. We're dealing with engineers here, not UA-cam recommendations. When they design and stress-test these engines, the clearances, timing etc. are set for a motor with used oil, not fresh, thin and clean oil. Oxidization and contamination of the motor oil are inevitable, and it is accounted for in the design of these engines, beyond the shadow of a doubt. For the average daily driver, follow the recommendations in the manual, let's not try to reinvent the wheel. And yes, that even includes you, the guy that does a highway pull one a week and classifies himself as a street racer.

    • @buildanddrive
      @buildanddrive  Рік тому +10

      BMW Factory recommended oil change interval is 15,000 miles which the previous owner followed and is probably why the engine had worn prematurely at only 100,000 kilometers.

    One thing you mentioned which I'm not sure is correct, the power steering fluid, all the forums show the dipstick location on the left where it says ATF? ATF only etc on the lid? But you are filling it up in a different location (not a big deal as different motor) but also everyone says Dextron III ATF for the power steering fluid on all the BMW forums?

    • @buildanddrive

      You are correct, thanks for pointing that out. On the 320i the resevoir is on the passenger side of the engine at the very front. And it does say ATF ONLY on the cap. So I guess for that model, use that fluid. My PS pump has always been noisy, I wonder if some ATF would quiet it down.

    • @buildanddrive
      @buildanddrive  3 роки тому +4

    Unless you are using 100% synthetic oil (which I would recommend, this is NOT Full Synthetic oil which is 10%-40% synthetic oil, mixed with standard oil. Mobile 1 uses 40% synthetic in their oils. Yes every Full Synthetic is a blend) changing your oil every 3000-5000 miles would be best. You can never change your oil too much. You should pick a quality oil, and stay with that brand for best results. Not all engine oils work well together. Adding a quality additive like Slick 50 during the winter and summer months will provide protection against dry starts, and increase your gas mileage by 2-3 MPG. As one who has worked in the auto parts industry (Autozone) I would not recommend 0-40 oil, use 5-40. Higher viscosity gives you better compression and better ability for the oil to get to the needed parts in your engine. Any teflon type products are excellent for your vehicle. Slick 50 is one of the FEW maintenance applications you can do that will actually pay for itself by the increased MPG. (no affiliation with Slick 50, just a product I have used and trusted for 20 years.) It will help provide much better lubrication for your motor and VANOS system. Another excellent teflon product is Trico Ice Winter wiper blades with infused teflon in the rubber. They will not squeak, and last a long time. Yes you can use a Winter blade year round (and selling summer type and winter type blades is just a way to get you to spend extra $$). It is high quality blade and not very expensive on Rockauto. Remember, teflon products are self lubricating, which is why they work so well with your car. You will see a definite improvement and your engine will love you using the Slick 50. It's a good product at a reasonable price. And does pay for itself. I cannot recommend using an engine flush, as they can ruin important gaskets. Use only oil to flush your engine. If you feel the need to do a flush, add your oil and change it after 200-300 miles. Or change the oil pan gasket and make sure to clean thoroughly the oil pan before installing. Brake cleaner can be used to help clean the oil pan. Lastly a low temp thermostat is a good addition. Check Irish Racing for reasonable price low temp thermostats (they make only BMW after market parts). NASCAR utilizes 160 degree F thermostats, and if it is good enough for NASCAR it probably is good for your car as well. take care.

    • @buildanddrive

      Thanks for the comment Johan, I've heard of slick 50 but we can't get it here in Germany. I agree engine flushes on old engines can ruin alot of gaskets and make things worse.
