I have a 2002 330ci convertible 5 speed stick shift with 73000 miles on it. It's a nice fun car. But it has this ticking noise and the check engine light comes on at time. The car has no power as if it's in limp mode when I give it gas after sitting for a minute or so, like at a red light. But if I turn the car off and then on again it goes away almost immediately. Car has a code come up, some p code having to do with cylinder 2. I changed spark plugs and a bad boot. It was good for a couple days then problem Reoccurred. I removed the fuel injecter cleaned it. Problem went away then came back after a few days. Checked coils again, one had a fucked up spring so I changed it. Problem went away for like3 weeks....then came back. I'm not a mechanic but I can do a little. I may have to take it to a shop.
It’s called a “run up” in the aviation sector. Although it’s not used to fix lifter tick it will maximize lubrication and expose issues preflight. So basically if a lifter gets pushed out the valve cover you know you at least saved yourself a tow charge. 😅
I will do the procedure as soon as possible on my e92 325i, I have an x1 28i xdrive 3.0 and it no longer makes the noise when the engine is cold. I just have to thank this channel, you are number 1
I once bought a mazda 6 that had ticking noise for 500 bucks cause it was ticking after sitting. Worse case scenario lifter or rod bearing. I did revs like this and even higher rpms. Every 5 seconds or so and ticking went away. Sold car for 3k following week 😂😂😂
How long will this fix last for and how often do you think this would have to be done? And is that the natural BMW sound to kind of still sound kind of clicky like when you showed the engine again after getting the engine going for 3 minutes? Sorry for the lack of knowledge! Also, if someone lets the tick go without doing anything about it-can it eventually cause a bigger issue eventually? Thanks man!
If you have the tick every morning, like mine, the only fix is to open the engine and do repairs(very costly). Don’t spend money on additives! If your engine is ticking, your cam boxes are the problem-they are damaged and oil pressure is passing the groove that’s been cut in them, causing low oil pressure to some of the lifters. If you can’t afford to repair the engine, the best you can do, is to just replace your oil every 5000kms. Or sell the car. This is the actual truth. 👍
I've had a ticking from my 2007 2.7 Boxster for months. Ive been worried sick that it was the start of bore scoring! Watched your vid and went for 4th gear thrash down the A2 at 4000rpm. Ticking has stopped. Fingers crossed that its cleared the problem. Big thanks for posting the vid. Not seen this suggestion on any porsche forums.
Great video and terrific free advice! I just did it for my M52tu25 and the ticking nearly disappeared after doing what you just showed here. My question is can I do this again shortly after to try to eliminate totally the ticking noise?
Hi BMW doctor, I would like to use Liqui Moly CeraTec for my BMW 5 series as my engine is bit noisy, but in the car booklet it states not to use any oil additive. And i would like to use it so that my engine would last longer. Many thanks
I had this problem on my e46 after 2 years of sitting (was my project car) I couldn't figure out what the problem was, and my powersteering didnt work, I redlined it a couple of times and it both the powersteeing pump started working and the ticking went away. Haven't had any issues since.
excellent, excellent...did the trick on Honda accord. LOVE YOU!! My 09 335d is still down but you were the absolute best for BMWs, helped me with a bunch of issues. BMW had huge amount of carbon buildup from short drives intown, went into limp mode, melted wiring harness, right outside PCM (that little hose blew off and melted it. Replaced wiring harness (pain but done) Will get back at her when possible. unfortunately, let battery die, cleaned manifold, was about to go further and lost my home....shes a beauty when not sick. You are going to help me with getting her back to life, soon.
Many thanks BMW Dr. For posting this . It really helped. I just had the annual servicing and the ticking noise started just after the annual service. I ignored for 2 weeks and my car broke down in the middle of the road. I found this video of yours and followed your procedure and it worked . Many thanks again. I had this ABS flipping and battery light as well. Is that because of ticking problem as well?
I had a ticking problem to my Dodge Journey 3.6l 6V and i tried this technique and it fixed it! I'm curious to see for how long it'll last, but as of now, no more ticking!
Thanks for this informative video. Just one question: Should we let the engine warm to operating temperature before performing the procedure? I have the N54 engine.
Yes go for a little drive first then do this method. Also, these engines don't like low rpms boys. Make it a habit to start shifting closer to 2,500 in general. You're not saving yourself by shifting at 1,700 to 'preserve gas mileage' - I have a turbo N54 335is, I had to learn a lot about these machines
Interesting video! I hadn't started my E46 330i for a full year. Once I started it, there was a tick. I took the car for a 6 hour drive, almost all highway. When I parked the car at home with fresh gas it was great. Apparently it just need to get the fluids fully circulated to replace the old oil that got crappy and stuck in the hydraulic lifters!
Thank you! I was working on my wife’s bmw and it was sitting for awhile and when we started it this started to happen. Thank you so much because I thought I fucked up even tho I triple check my work
Thank you for showing us. I'm going to try this to my Macan. Ticking ever since the dealership changed my oil. Today im going to try this. Thanks again.
I have a 2013 bmw 328i xdrive sport and I can gladly say that this solved the problem I had to do it twice each for 2-3 minutes and the issue has been corrected
Really enjoying your videos, getting an education. I've got a 2008 528i @ 119k miles (pretty sure N52 engine) with this lifter tick noise. It used to stop very shortly after starting the engine but now takes driving around for some time. The tick returns the next day...or if my car is sitting for more than a day or two...ugh! Is this RPM rev procedure a permanent fix. Thoughts welcome. Thx.
Yes this will cure it but make sure you drive it or it will come back at you can do this you need to get your car out and drive it don’t let it sit and if you ain’t changed your oil CHANGE IT that has a big big Effect on the lifters
Wow, I watched this video last night and carried out your recommended guidelines on my 2018 Mini Cooper S and it’s amazing. Ticking like a clock one minute and the next my engine is running quietly without ticking at all 👍🏻🙏 thank you for the brilliant advice.
Whao! It worked for my Toyota camry car like magic. It's amazing. Thanks and God bless you for saving me hundreds of dollars. Respect. Even my mechanic did not know this.
Was going to order Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive but just watched your video and tried on my daughters 2013 Mini Cooper - seemed to work! Gonna see what it’s like tomorrow on a cold start but so far so good!
So I pretty much had the exact same issue tonight with my 2004 c320 and it happened on my way home while I was in a school zone going slow, I found this video and I tried it and I only held it out about 1500 RPM to 2000 pretty much around 2000 for about 2 to 3 minutes and at first I didn't think it works and I was burning a bunch of oil so I shut my car off I left it alone for a little bit I came back out and started again about an hour and a half later and it was running just as quiet as it was before and no longer burning oil 😂 so thank you for the great advice I suggest anyone else looking to solve this problem without having to spend money try this first because I was about to buy a new motor 🤣
The reason this happens to these engines is because people don't drive the car the way it was built to be driven. BMW engines especially the 6 cylinders are high strung engines. They are designed to be revved high most of the time. If you baby it. You will get the ticking noise from the engine. That's why BMW lifter bleed procedure works. He is correct this is the exact same thing that a BMW technician will do if you bring the car to the dealership. And they will charge you an hour of labor to do it. And probably a diagnosis fee as well. Good info. Save people money.
THNXS but it this safe/risky do do with BMW 1 series 118i (E87) 06 modell N46B20 egine? will it work? I will try it and update later but safe to do on my car? And perment fix?

In a cold weather + short distances driving, I got the same thicking, even louder on S430 Mercedes V8. So this procedure helped me too, no more ticking. Thanks!
@@EddieRollindubbs13 what did you think after doing this? I got a 5.7 Grand Cherokee in gonna try this with. Sure it not just loose manifold bolts and when the engine heats, the expansion stops those manifold leaks?

Can I use your method in the evening when I return at home? I hope in a cold restart quite. Oil 0w30. Thank you! I wait your reply Franz
I had that tick when I went to the Pub I passed out in my parking lot with my foot tramped on the peddle which woke me up 3 hours later tick is gone omg it works 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Interesting, thank you!! My 2003 525i e39 ticks sometimes when the oil gets a little low. I think I have a leak somewhere under the car. It goes away with proper oil level. I will try this method the next time it happens.
this fix was perfect, I live in Siberia, and i was always worried about the -30 degrees causing damage to the engine, but after revving my cold engine this ticking was indeed gone, it developed a pretty heavy knocking sound though, but at least the ticks are no more
Question: It seems like this would happen automatically as soon as someone drives down the highway for 2-3mins fast enough to be at 3000rpm.....and wouldn’t that happen for most people at least once in a while, if not daily???? Idk that exact car, but don’t most cars reach 3000rpm on the highway? Also I assume your method would work the same if someone just drove for 2-3min at 3000rpm, either on highway, or just use a lower gear to get the rpm up ? (Or does having no load on the engine make a difference? Thanks!
nope bmw does not hey, i have a 320i e92 2012, on the highway if I am over 3000rpm I am well over the speed limit, BMWs are low revving engines on the highway and in the city to be honest
Thank you mate, just done it on my daughters car, she actually started crying with relief as times are hard at the moment and a buggered car would of been the straw that would of broke the camel’s back ❤
From what I have read, this was due to a faulty design where the lifters didn't get the right amount of oil pressure to actually secure enough flow for the lifters to expand. A "small" backlash where they had to change the top for a new reworked one with the right oil flow capacity to the lifters. Any insight on this? Cheers and thanks for a good channel!

Omg. The ticking on my f20 125i was giving me anxiety, I tried your trick and now it’s gone!!! Thank you so much.
Haven't had any issues since.
any updates? I have an e46 as well with the same tick. Has it returned? You revved for 3 minutes?
@@Elvis_Kunda how do you redline it ? And you do you remember if it overheated?
excellent, excellent...did the trick on Honda accord.
Got my e87 back yesterday had the filters and oil changed and my car sounded like this dismorning I'll try this when I finish work hopefully it works
Did it work?? Or what wss it?
Many thanks BMW Dr. For posting this . It really helped. I just had the annual servicing and the ticking noise started just after the annual service. I ignored for 2 weeks and my car broke down in the middle of the road. I found this video of yours and followed your procedure and it worked . Many thanks again. I had this ABS flipping and battery light as well. Is that because of ticking problem as well?
That’s after you topped up the oil right? I think I was running on empty oil for about a week that’s why the noise started
Worked on my e46 2.5l however it only lasted a few weeks, then started ticking on startup again
Change oil
Would this work on a Audi b7 4.2 v8 with the same ticking noise ?
I had a ticking problem to my Dodge Journey 3.6l 6V and i tried this technique and it fixed it! I'm curious to see for how long it'll last, but as of now, no more ticking!
THNXS but it this safe/risky do do with BMW 1 series 118i (E87) 06 modell N46B20 egine? I will try it and update later but safe to do on my car?
I have a 2016 Dodge journey v6. Just developed a small tick. I'm going to try this tomorrow.
Thanks for this informative video. Just one question: Should we let the engine warm to operating temperature before performing the procedure? I have the N54 engine.
Got the same problem on the n54 but didnt do it yet. Did it work on yours ?
Yes go for a little drive first then do this method.
Also, these engines don't like low rpms boys. Make it a habit to start shifting closer to 2,500 in general. You're not saving yourself by shifting at 1,700 to 'preserve gas mileage'
- I have a turbo N54 335is, I had to learn a lot about these machines
Interesting video! I hadn't started my E46 330i for a full year. Once I started it, there was a tick. I took the car for a 6 hour drive, almost all highway. When I parked the car at home with fresh gas it was great. Apparently it just need to get the fluids fully circulated to replace the old oil that got crappy and stuck in the hydraulic lifters!
Thank you! I was working on my wife’s bmw and it was sitting for awhile and when we started it this started to happen. Thank you so much because I thought I fucked up even tho I triple check my work
How about long time results? Did you should do Rev it when Drive it? Or fix it once and for all?
Thank you for showing us. I'm going to try this to my Macan. Ticking ever since the dealership changed my oil.
Today im going to try this. Thanks again.
You fixed it
I have a 2013 bmw 328i xdrive sport and I can gladly say that this solved the problem I had to do it twice each for 2-3 minutes and the issue has been corrected
My car makes lots of noises and this made a few disappear thanks bro
Your the boss, thank you. This trick worked on my 2014 BMW!! Mini COOPER.!!.
Does this work for other car brands too? Like a Hyundai?
Thanks!
Respect.
Even my mechanic did not know this.
was it cold when it happened and was ur car sitting for awhile?
Thank you so much it worked on my Tesla Model S !
Lmfao
Thank you so much it worked on my for kids radio flyer (classic red wagon).
Worked on my model 3!
Same for my RC car 😃
Lmao 🤣😂😅

Does this really work?
@@dylanpresley3079 yep
does this work for the diesel models? E90 320d M47 Engine 2006 started to make this sound now
Was going to order Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive but just watched your video and tried on my daughters 2013 Mini Cooper - seemed to work! Gonna see what it’s like tomorrow on a cold start but so far so good!
I just had my oil changed today, I needed one bad...ticking noise gone a lot, but you can hear just a little. I'm gonna try it...
Imagine trying to do this early in the morning with a straight pipe 😂
Hi Great Video Tip.... Just wondering if this technique works with all Car Makes and Models?
Is this specific to BMW's or is it similar for all cars including vw tdi engines?
Doesnt hurt to try it, this happened to.m y jetta due to low oil but replaced the oil and the tic went away.
Good job .we need people like you on UA-cam.👍
thanks very much mate
Thank you so much for you doing this video. I just fixed mine on my 2016Qx80. Awesome!!!!
THNXS but it this safe/risky do do with BMW 1 series 118i (E87) 06 modell N46B20 egine? will it work?

Wow! Had this ticking noise for a while on my 2017 Hyundai Tucson 2.0 and it worked like a charm. Engine running quiet now. Thanks mate.
Aren't they supposed to bleed under normal driving?
idk but the dealer does the same
My neighbour's love me ,well used to
😂😂😂 THEY HATE ME because of the exhaust doing this video it was filmed 3am in the morning
@@BMWDoctor hello i have an bmw e39 1998 m52 520i when on cold start the rpm goes up and down like it gon turn off if you dont hit the gas pedal and the accleration si not constant its good when the car is cold but when it is hot or driven more the accleration is sluggish not enough power but sometimes the power comes back and goes away again no engine light no nothing just not enough power it feels like the car is heavy like a army tank haha i dont know how to explain it better please help doctor
@Nagato is better than Punk Naruto good stuff, I used to own a 1998 535i that did this, turned out the anti shudder flap had failed. Once repaired it ran perfect and back to full power.
Will this work on my reliant robin?
Anything will work on a Reliant.
Hyundai i30 owner here. Pretty sure that has fixed my ticking! As a female I thank you. Had to do it longer then u said to. And will see if its still good tomorrow haha but so far so good!

Great video, very helpful, will this work on a e92 335i petrol engine. N54. Thanks
Mr motivator “I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT” “ I LIKE TOOOOO MOVE IT “
Do this work on all bmws
I'm so glad you told us it was a free tip, I was just overhearing it ;-)
Is this something specifically for BMW or would it work on a ford engine as well?
Did u ever try it out?
My 2014 Town & Country sounds just like this even after replacing all 12 rocker arms. I tried Seafoam treatment but it did not seem to help at all. I tried this method but it did not help at all either. I am not sure how this method works and no one seems to know but I am amazed this works on BMW.
In a cold weather + short distances driving, I got the same thicking, even louder on S430 Mercedes V8. So this procedure helped me too, no more ticking. Thanks!
My lawn mower was ticking guide loudly, after trying this the ticking quit, right after the loud bang, thanks
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I got a Dodge Durango 2012 ima try this

I got a 5.7 Grand Cherokee in gonna try this with. Sure it not just loose manifold bolts and when the engine heats, the expansion stops those manifold leaks?

Hi BMW DOCTOR, my father has a VW Polo 900 with 60000km the ticking is not more but is noisy with cold start when the temperature arrive 75 degrees the ticking stop. Can I use your method in the evening when I return at home? I hope in a cold restart quite. Oil 0w30. Thank you! I wait your reply Franz
Hey would this possibly work on a 1995 lexus ls400??
I had that tick when I went to the Pub I passed out in my parking lot with my foot tramped on the peddle which woke me up 3 hours later tick is gone omg it works 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
I did that after 10 pints of beer. Woke to find puke down my chest and a big hole in the crank case with bits of big end buried in the rad.
My friend's let's have a pint
You briefly mentioned it, but I just wanted to confirm. You perform the procedure with every oil change? Great video!
no I dont I said this ticking only comes when oil is fully broken down and needs changing this is how I know its broken down as soon as ticking comes
Yes. Thanks Doc!
Thanks for sharing this simple procedure, much appreciated!
Interesting, thank you!! My 2003 525i e39 ticks sometimes when the oil gets a little low. I think I have a leak somewhere under the car. It goes away with proper oil level. I will try this method the next time it happens.
I wonder if it will work for a Infiniti g35x I think they have bucket shims though?
this fix was perfect, I live in Siberia, and i was always worried about the -30 degrees causing damage to the engine, but after revving my cold engine this ticking was indeed gone, it developed a pretty heavy knocking sound though, but at least the ticks are no more
Man you're just damned unlucky - Mine locked up completely so no ticking, AND no knocking - and all for free, using no oils/fluids nor nuffink
Ticking noise cured without getting your hands dirty what a simple free fix this proves the doctor expertise is unmatched A*.
thanks mate
BMW Doctor awesome channel. Had to subscribe mate.
Dean, what a great video. THE DOCTOR HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
your welcome bruda
Hi there, Thank you for this amazing video. my Mini Cooper does has the same problem. do this fix applied to it too? thnak you
Can i use this procedure in my Toyota innova?
Amazing! Worked on a 2014 Buick! So many thanks!!
I thought I messed up my car, thank you!
Does this apply to other car brands? Like toyota and nissan?
Thank you mate, just done it on my daughters car, she actually started crying with relief as times are hard at the moment and a buggered car would of been the straw that would of broke the camel’s back ❤
Thank you for this lesson man. God praise you to help us others. 👍🏽💪🏽

Thats what everyone recommend in our Forums ;) Let it fly 50km :)
Worked on my Renault modus
Thanks. Feel I owe you something.
No problem mate glad it helped you
From what I have read, this was due to a faulty design where the lifters didn't get the right amount of oil pressure to actually secure enough flow for the lifters to expand.
A "small" backlash where they had to change the top for a new reworked one with the right oil flow capacity to the lifters.
Any insight on this?
Cheers and thanks for a good channel!
