During the 1960's and 70's young soldiers were sent to fight for their very lives in the jungles of Viet Nam. Many of them received letters from their girlfriends & wives telling them they were not welcome home. The hurt, pain and anguish made them feel like jumping off a mountain, find a cave and crawl in and die or ride a train till it ran out of track so that no one would ever know what happened to them. "Can't you see, oh can't you see what that woman's been doing to me"?
Ive always seen it as the Allman Brothers were the blues/jazz version of Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the rock version, and Marshall Tucker was the country version.
Toy Caldwell lost both his younger brothers (Tommy next to him playing bass and his youngest brother Tim) within a month of each other in 1980 to car accidents. He was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). That's him singing with incredible soul and thumbpicking that beautiful Gibson Les Paul. Thank you for everything brother. Rest easy.
Wow. Took me back to high school, 50 years in a virtual instant, for a dreamlike listening experience. In my head I was there (then?) again, your joyful reactions enhancing the connection to that indelibly stamped joyful musical memory. Thank you! 😊
Your reactions are really very good. Hope you do more - and more frequently. It’s a lot of fun watching younger people react to great music from my era of music - but it’s even more fun when they are from a different culture and learning about this music. Toy Caldwell, the guitar player who was also singing this song serves in the U.S. Marine Corp in the Vietnam war and was shot in combat. He received the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action. He died after the war from unrelated causes - but still far too young.
Had the opportunity to meet the band when I worked security for them at my university. Sweet souls all. And a phenomenal concert. No autotune, just outstanding musicianship.
American southern rock This is at the top of the heap. Heard it in a love song is another classic from Marshall Tucker. Thanks and more folks should always broaden their musical horizons!
Welcome to the genre of southern rock!! The Marshall Tucker band is one of the holy trinity of southern rock. The other two bands are Allman brothers and lynerd skynerd
I grew up 30 miles from Spartanburg. Marshall Tucker Band was part of the soundtrack of life back in the mid-70s. Most of the original band are now gone, except for the flutist Jerry Eubanks, drummer Paul Riddle, and Doug Gray.
There was some great music back in the 60's & 70's. Listen to some Kansas, some Boston, some Chicago, some CSN (Crosby, Stills, and Nash), Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt Bob Seger, Journey, Billy Joel, Supertramp, Heart, Three Dog Night, Simon & Garfunkel, and so many more. I think you will enjoy it. 🙂
MANY years ago got on a bus in New York City with a few friends and went to Saratoga upstate to see them warm up for the Allman Brothers Band. Rained all the way there but when we got to Saratoga the sun burst through the clouds and we got to see a great show.
My main biographical song. After having your heart ripped out by a woman, or women, is not something you want to go through at any time and never quite goes away. They made flute playing cool in southern rock just like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull did and how Kansas did with a violin.
Thank you for sharing this video. I admit had a good laugh when Carol exclaimed “shame on her!” 😂 I agree! That witch! This is a beautiful, simple song about heartbreak, and it’s darn near perfect. Hence, it is widely considered the quintessential Southern Rock anthem. The video you reviewed was shot at the Grand Opera House in Macon, Georgia, in 1973. It was great to see you guys appreciating the amazing talent of the Marshall Tucker Band, but, incredibly, they were not even the headline act at this concert! They opened for the Allman Brothers Band that night at the concert you just watched. In a lovely venue with great acoustics that seats only about 1,000 people. And the opening act put out this amazing song live on the first try, no do-overs. Wow, right? In my version of heaven, this concert is about to start, and I’m holding tickets for the best seats in the venue. I love to see people from elsewhere appreciating our music. I have lived in Macon for 25 years, and we are quite proud of our musical heritage here. This concert is a piece of that history and I thank you for sharing it.
That was Down Home Southern Music !!!! Great Song and Reaction !!!! Keep Going on Your Journey of American Southern Music !! I Will Be Watching !! Your Friend Ed from Detroit Michigan
The nicest guys you will ever meet. I got to jam with them in the early 80s at a barn party. They have my daughter that was 5 or 6 at the time a tambourine to play along. I miss the good ole days life was much simpler.❤
Saw them twice back in'79 and '80! Toy Caldwell kicks ass! Great southern rock/country rock band! Toy was wounded in Vietnam, and four of the members were veterans!
Greetings from America … LOVE YOUR CHANNEL ❤ Thank You BOTH for covering GREAT MUSIC .. WE ARE ONE together in this world! Toy & Tommy Caldwell with the Marshall Tucker Band was only one of the MANY GREAT BANDS in the USA. They are truly missed.
Hello guy's, the video quality isn't the best, but it's such a great glimpse back in time and it's so great to see (baby face)Toy Caldwell perform. RIP: Toy Caldwell 💔🔥U R Missed I wonder if you'd like to listen to another song by the Allman Brothers Band. I believe you've reacted to one or two of their songs, and seemed to like them. If so then, here's a live performance "The Allman Brothers Band - Soulshine - 8/14/1994 - Woodstock 94 (Official)" Really great reaction and much appreciated, thanx 4 sharing👍
That baby face Toy was a Vietnam purple heart war hero. Grew up in area, upper South Carolina, our boys. Toy had his beard within a year??? He and his brother, Tommy (played bass) played with their thumbs. Saw them in concert. Saw Toy sit in with other band. Sadly, Tommy lost his life in an auto accident about a week after their youngest brother had the same fate in 1980. Toy played with MTB another couple of years and left the band. another band, The Toy Caldwell Band. Toy passed away age 45 in 1993. Proud to have grown up in that era; music was good. No autotune. You either had the goods (talent) or not. They did.
"Everything was different back then" ... and all was different for the better .. music, tv, movies, people, culture, morals, ideas, creation, productivity, education .. The generation growing today are like the Borgs. One mind. One thought. No one can think outside the box. Most are afraid to speak their own mind on any topic. When you do .. there is an apology afterwards for saying it. Time this country get back to basics. What's important and what's not. Or this nation is screwed. Won't be ANY PLACE in the world people can migrate to to be protected and FREE.
This clip was taken from a video from Don Kirchner's Rock Concert 1973 - A Saturday Night In Macon. I think it's available on UA-cam. It's worth a watch. It features three bands in this order: Wet Willie, The Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band. There's a clip from it of Wet Willie performing the song, Grits Ain't Groceries available on UA-cam also. You would enjoy that. They were one of my favorite bands to see live, back in the 70s.
I think you would really enjoy the band QUEEN. They had numerous hits, but their performance at the 1985 AIDs Benefit is called the greatest 20 mins of Rock N Roll ever.
I really enjoy your reactions and how you take the time to understand all of the lyrics. If you like a good long instrumental I would reccomend checking out "Stranglehold - iconic!
I just stumbled on to this in my feed and I always like to see how young people react to it. I grew up listening to the Marshall Tucker Band and this is an all time favorite song. Subscribed so I can see more of y'all's reactions.
Early 1970s southern Rock/Blues Band. I think the lead guitar and vocals man, has passed away. This was really nice music to listen to back in those days, and it still is. God Bless
Southern bands are the best and back then southern girls flat out wild and crazy especially those that lived back in the hills. Drinking moonshine and no police. They were known as Hillbillies back in the 50s and 60s. Spent time back in the hills of southeastern Kentucky and North eastern Tennessee in Coal country. Great music they played.
You want flute, here's a rabbit hole 🕳 for you, the band is called Jethro Tull and they are one of the best progressive bands that you will love. The lead singer and flutist is self taught and is just this crazy lunatic.

Tot wrote it when he was in Vietnam and witnessed all his fellow brothers in arms receiving break up letters.
Toy not tot.
I am retired from the army and seen alot of fellow soldiers get dear John letters while in combat. It never ended well.
I got a DEAR JOHN LETTER 2 WEEKS INTO BASIC TRAINING. THAT SUCKED
I got a dear john letter when I arrived at my first post.
Outstanding job y'all, RIP Toy Caldwell, Semper Fi brother
He never looks up while singing this song. It's more than a song to this man. It's for everyone who has ever been burnt for no good reason
Toy was a United States Marine and wounded Vietnam War veteran. He made this video just a few years after he rturned home from the Vietnam War.

Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot are in the conversation also when it comes to southern rock.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
You can listen to the music of any of these groups over and over again and never get tired of it. The music is never outdated. Pure American music!
All 3 are southern jazz rock bands.
@@royrocker900438 Special and the Outlaws!
This ole cowboy is a good Marshall Tucker song to hear. It showcases their musical talent
So underrated!!
"Gonna buy a ticket" "I heard chicken". Best misheard lyric all day.
💀💀😂😂😂
MTB still my favorite band after all these decades. RIP, TOMMY CALDWELL, TOY CALDWELL AND GEORGE MCORKLE. Three original members!
Another Southern Rock you might like is "Flirtin With Disaster" by Molly Hatchet.
That is just plain ole good Southern Rock !!!
This is such a great song. And I'm so grateful that we have this old footage. They will live forever to give this gift to young people.
I grew up 30 miles from Spartanburg. Marshall Tucker Band was part of the soundtrack of life back in the mid-70s. Most of the original band are now gone, except for the flutist Jerry Eubanks, drummer Paul Riddle, and Doug Gray.

Southern Rock at its finest. Music combined with Toy's great bluesy voice-made in heaven southern rock.
One of my goat songs!

Jazz, the Blues, and Rock and Roll were born not more than 100 miles apart
Southern Rock of the 60's and 70's was amazing.
Love is a POWERFUL thing for sure.
If you like the flute, I would recommend Herd It a Love Song by Marshal Tucker
Saw them twice back in'79 and '80! Toy Caldwell kicks ass! Great southern rock/country rock band! Toy was wounded in Vietnam, and four of the members were veterans!

"Fire on the Mountain" studio version is another great song of theirs

A 60's classic by the Mamas & the Papas - "California Dreamin'" features an Alto Flute solo. If you are going to react to it, choose the live one (has about 322 million views) It's not really a live performance (lip-sync'd) but you get to see the band members and the video defaults with "closed caption" so you can see the lyrics. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official)
This song for anybody who has gotten the wrong end of the stick in a relationship really drives the point home. Its time to saddle up and hit the dusty trail!
It's an American CLASSIC....
In addition to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, a couple more Jacksonville, Florida bands to consider are Molly Hatchet, with "Dreams I'll Never See" is a good single, and Blackfoot with their single "Highway Song". You two have great reactions! Oh yeah, 38 Special with "Hold On Loosely" are from JAX too!
I love this song
Wait till you do the Outlaws "Green Grass and High Tides Forever." You thought Freebird was wild play the Outlaws another southern band.
Ok people we had color in our tvs in the 60s and 70s ! Geeezz
Guys, I'm 67. If you wanna see something really special from my time check out Santana, "Soul Sacrifice" from the legendary 3 day music festival "Woodstock, 1969." But, PLEASE do either the 9:50 version, or the one from the motion picture that's 9:38 long..The others are cut down way too much...Carlos Santana (guitarist) just turned 22, at the time, and Mike Shrieve (Drummer) just turned 20..I think you'll be blown away.
Both of you are beautiful. 😊
You guys get it ❤
I just subbed to your channel, enjoying your reactions.
The song of a man saddened by the betrayal of his girlfriend
Hi guys. There is a band called Black Stone Cherry. They do a cover of Can't you see? It's a bit more rock but I think you'd like it.
Toy Caldwell is one of the unique guitar players, that thumb of his was fast.
