Singer/guitarist in this video is 26 year-old Toy Caldwell. He had been wounded in Vietnam in '68, returned to duty, and discharged from service in '69.
Hey from Texas, young man. I saw this band live in the 70s. I have been with my wife for 42years and raised a family. It's all about trust and respect.
Music was most assuredly more genuine back then. I hate what’s happened. There’s talent today, but few people are playing instruments, we have auto-tune, etc. yes, we are “politically correcting” ourselves off the globe. Men and masculinity are under attack. I love men, and we need men. God, please help us. I love your take on, not only the song, but life, in general. Be yourself young man. Be yourself. You’re a man, and God created you as such. ❤️
The lead singer, Toy Caldwell, noticed that while he was in Vietnam, all his friends were getting "Dear John" letters from their girlfriends who were leaving them. So, Toy wrote this song.
As a 63 year old, I say to you, young man…… follow your instincts about honor and values. You’re a good man. My generation was blessed with music like this.
I feel so blessed to have been a teenager back then. We had the most talented band and singers that didn't need any help keeping a tune...Your right, music was so much more genuine. Every band member could play an instrument and the lyrics back in the day really told a story that we could relate to...Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the reaction!
Brother, if youre a "stand up guy"...if you're a "good man," then you have my respect. I dont care your color, religion, your national origin....then YOU are a friend of mine. As we used to say back in the '60s during the Civil Rights crisis....keep the faith. BTW, im a 77 year old white guy. Keep the faith my brother.
My mom died in 2011 from ALS but this was her favorite. I can still het smile when the flute comes in and dancing. Brings tears to my eyes but now they are good tears
We are so lucky to have this amazing gem. Love it. Maybe try Leon Bridges Smooth Sailin or Bad, Bad News for a “newer” artist that has great songs that will make you move. And please continue being a man. We appreciate it!
Unfortunately there is not enough space on my phone to handle all the different music I love. I thank my grandparents for the love of old, old country music. My uncle tony for the love of 60 and 70’s country. My uncle Mike for the love of 60’s rock. My mama for the love of 80’s country and the 50’s rock. My sister for the love of metal. The radio station for my love of pop and rap music in the 80’s
Yo da best. Love your genre analysis. This song really is a homage to the BLUES songs of such African American blues artists as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin Wolf .. . ("That woman is giving me the blues ..")
I got to see them at Harrah's Lake Tahoe just before the world ended 2018, and they killed. Needless to say, the ones still with us are a lot older now
I fyou would like to hear some Texas blues. listen to ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues". One of my favorite songs. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear of it and I never get tired of it.
Naw...don't except nothing buddy..be yourself..tell em your soul ain't for sale...63 year old former marine from south carolina...which ..by the way..is 15 miles from where I live ..to where them marshall tucker boys came from....
You can make it all about women. Cause it seems to me too many young women these days are way too extra! They need to stop worrying about what he/she can do for them and start doing it for themselves. If you're not already familiar, give "Roses" by Outkast a listen. Sums it up pretty well.

Young and experienced!
Once you dive into Southern Rock, your soul will be fulfilled.

The music of that era reflected the influence of Willy Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.

This song never sounded nearly as good with Doug Gray singing it as it was with Toy Caldwell. It is just a great song that has stood the test of time.
