    It's always a thrill to see pre-1970s, dark-haired Johnny!

I know, right? Mr. Carson seemed to drastically age as the show entered the 1970's and moved to California. Not just because he stopped dying his hair either. The stress of divorces and dealing with the Network must have taken their toll.

Hilarious! I always loved when Johnny would desperately try to stiffle cracking up when the bit or impression was going south. God, do I ever miss watching Johnny every night! Thanks for all the years of laughter ❤

Serious question: how did he get to where he was?
It seems like everyone made fun of him for being a stiff, but he must have done something right.

@@keefriff99 I’m not sure but if I had to guess I would assume they were not expecting the show to become what it was at the beginning, otherwise I’d imagine they’d pick a host more fitting to the types of guests they had

Sullivan was born in 1901. He came up through radio and vaudeville. He first did TV in the 1940s, when it was all very new. Those were the days when you had to make and develop connections to be in show business. You also had to be bland and uncontroversial. That’s what Sullivan did. But once he became famous, and had clout, he booked new acts, including women and blacks who no one else would book. Sullivan had to balance the network, the sponsors, the guests and the audience. Sometimes he didn’t get it right. Maybe he wasn’t “hip,” but millions tuned in. He was the right guy for the times, but those times changed. Hindsight is always 20/20.

@@garywagner2466 Thanks for the information. It’s always interesting to see those old school broadcasters like Jack Paar interact with the more modern days of television. Pasts last appearance on Letterman is a great example, he was not at all used to Davids personality as a host

I remember an episode of The Kopykats back in the 70's. All cast members were impressionists. On one show they all claimed to be Ed Sullivan -- and Sullivan came out from the wings.

@@alpha-omega2362it happens literally all the time nowadays. All five late night hosts had a podcast together during the writers strike. Also both Kimmel and Fallon are constantly spoofing each other going on each others shows etc. If I’m honest I kinda wish it happened a bit less so it’d be a bit more special when it happens.

The Mighty Carson Arts Players. And the nightly live monologue were masterpieces of topicality. All I ever wanted to do in life was to be on the writing staff for The Monologue. I once interviewed Mel Tolkin, but that's the closest I ever got to my Dream Job. I asked him if I would improve my chances of hiring on if I changed my name to "Shlomo Hamamoto." Rest in peace, Johnny Carson.
