  • Redd Foxx introduces Rodney Dangerfield and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, “People respect great musicians... and they respect great comedians, all except one. And we’re going to change that all tonight. We’ve combined the best musicians with the only man who gets no respect.”
    Originally aired January 5th, 1978 on the Redd Foxx Show.
    0:26 “Last week I looked up my family tree. Two dogs were using it.”
    1:36 “I was so poor. My rich aunt died. In her will, I owed her $20.”
    3:45 “Just last week a guy pulled a knife on me. I could see it wasn't a very professional job. There was butter on it.”

    When I was seventeen or eighteen I snuck into Dangerfields with my buddies. It was a Tuesday and the place was dead. I order a drink and turn around and Rodney Dangerfield is standing right next to me. He does about fifteen minutes of one liners making fun of how his own bar is empty. It was one of the greatest nights of my life

    • @perry12328
      @perry12328 6 років тому +5

      DaveConleyPortfolio that's true it moves in the same direction. But disrespect is only his conceit/facade.
      In fact we do respect him. The disrespect he's joking about is correlational- he's on our side and thats because we want him there. If he lets his act actually get stepped on and he's no longer in control, that won't be the case anymore. Then that apparent similarity won't matter and he'll lose the audience. The 'disrespect' is only his angle. He had to manage this interruption just as much as if his act were the opposite, he just needs to do it differently/accordingly.

    I know this post is old. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. I love reading the comments because it makes me even more aware of things I didn't even notice until you mention them. I had the honor of meeting Rodney once. I was driving to Atlanta from Macon with my girlfriend listening to the radio and heard Rodney was playing at the fox theatre, maybe it was the center stage, hell I can't remember, but I do remember this. She had no clue who he was, and I had no plans for our date other than we were going to Atlanta, but I knew I wanted to go see him when I heard the commercial, so we did. She literally peed her pants. Women were throwing underwear and motel room keys on the stage. We were leaving and laughing and repeating his one liners to each other then all of a sudden, this door opened in the hallway towards the exit and Rodney comes out. We introduced ourselves and told him how much we enjoyed the show, he shook my hand, gave my girlfriend a kiss on the cheek and thanked us for coming. Walked with us out the exit and when he was getting in his ride he asked, You want to come? I had no idea where we were going, but drank some of the best bourbon and smoked some fine cigars, met a lot of people I had no clue who they were, but Rodney every time introduced me and my girlfriend by name like he knew us forever. A true gentleman and class act. Best night of my life. Luv ya Rodney.

    I saw Rodney in concert in about 1989. For 90 minutes, he delivered one bombshell after the other. One of the funniest stand-ups ever, and he did it all with 1-liners. One of my favorites:
    "Oh, I was an ugly baby...I was an ugly baby, why I was so ugly, my mother breast-fed me through a _straw!"_

      I know, wasn't that strange? The all red set and an orchestra to give the audience time to laugh between jokes.

    • @mrnocal
      @mrnocal 4 роки тому +5

      There was probably no rehearsal where the orchestra heard the jokes beforehand, so they were reacting as the audience did. I give them credit for doing as well as they did.

    • @jasoncarswell7458
      @jasoncarswell7458 3 роки тому +1

      It used to be a standard gag for the orchestra to intentionally play one stinger too early during a set and "accidentally" interrupt a joke, usually a long or elaborate one the comedian was worried might bomb and slow down the set. Drummers were also trained to play a rimshot at the wrong time and draw attention away from the comedian if he's bombing a lot of jokes - gives him a minute to riff on his band and collect his thoughts.

    • @rmo52
      @rmo52 3 роки тому

      @@jasoncarswell7458 He'd send a tape ahead of the gig sometimes, outlining cues at Letter [A], [B], [C], etc. with the lead-in joke line. He'd end the tape with "See you then...and don't f*** it up!". And a sweetheart of a guy on the show.
