We had the privilege of seeing Don Rickles perform at Casino Rama just a few short months before his passing. He was way different in person. He told of missing his friends who'd passed that he loved so much. He cried on stage and told everyone to stop taking their friends and family for granted because tomorrow isn't guaranteed. He told of his great friendship with Bob Newhart. Yes there was loads of laughter, but we knew he was close to his time because he was out of breath a lot but performed nevertheless less. Don Rickles has my respect as an entertainer and a man. He was loved and is missed. R.I.P. Don, Alan, Groucho, Johnny, Dean, and all the rest.

Groucho Marx was so quick on his feet. Wow to think that most of these legends have passed on but to watch some of them when I was a child in the 80's is truly remarkable and memorable. The touch tone phone was just catching on, at most 5 channels on the Tv, and the national anthem played at 12 midnight depending on the time zone. Great entertainers for sure.

I was born in 1970, so, unfortunately, my first decade was the best my life could ever be!!!!!! As 70s kids, we got to be young at the greatest peak of America, of our peacetime, (between Nam and Lebanon/Beirut was a record 7 years, for our violent government!), of the world of fun, as experienced by human beings. WE had it all! There wasn't much reason to advance any further. Most of all, we still had freedom, now it's gone forever, not taken by some foreign government, but by our own, war drumbeating government. 70s kids started at the top! A Glorious Time Indeed

Sadly comedy today reflects a loss of humanity. It's not funny because it's just about being mean-spirited. Hopefully, talented comedians who are also decent human beings will rise up to fill the void.

You're certainly not wrong about the dramatic changes in acceptable behaviors/styles across generations, between the 55 years between this roast and current ones. Both old and new are funny, but what's acceptable behavior/language are night-and-day different. But what is tasteful/acceptable cuts both ways... and not as one-sided as you suggest. Yes, our modern speech/behavior is sadly more crude now. But the modern world is also much more tolerant and equitable than the older era. We've righted many old wrongs, and somehow mostly avoided the world wars of the 20th century. We've made great advancements in human rights and quality of life. So its not as one-sided worse as you suggest. At age 70, I lovingly remember all these great comics/roasts, but I also still enjoy the modern versions. Different? Yes. Better? Questionable.

Just goes off on his tangents, completely fractures the entire show, and has everyone rolling in the aisles. Including host John Daly, who is always under control. Marx just had an incredible feel for making people laugh.

Groucho not that funny, lest he has a female foil to bounce jokes off of. W.C. Fields from that era was funnier. Watch W.C. Fields Ping Pong.

And Mae West was funnier than both. That wasn't the point: Groucho would run off five comments to one sarcastic Fields barb. Differant pacing. Grouchy tended to preen after his hits while Fields deadpanned. Matter of taste and styles.

Rickles, so funny watching him break up. This was an earlier roast than the Dean Martin era ones. In those, every guest sent a few racist jabs at the black guy. A lot of times they gave it back, and in some ways it was great. But Nipsy? He was cool, never gave it back, just so smooth and clever in front of the camera.

Instead of the hug, as a sign of respect it seems comedians of the day would softly touch the side of the head with the left hand. Johnny gives Ed Sullivan one, then Ed gets two more on return to his seat from Don Rickles and Grocho. (For Rickles and Groucho it was more of a thanks for the material) 30:24
